View Full Version : Wanting to make a haircare basket for my mom...

I was recently talking to my mom about my haircare routine, and she mentioned how her has always felt like hay and would like to try something new. So I thought a haircare basket would make a cute mother's day gift...though I have some ideas of what I want to do, I would like to know if any of you girls/guys had any extra recommendations based on her particular hair type.
Here's a picture of her: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=7255&pictureid=101109
Of note: She has been bleaching and dying her hair blonde since before I was born...and I know she wouldn't be up for giving up the dye, haha.

A sample size of Nightblooming Panacea or her Triple Moon hair oil would be great!

You could mix up some Fox's Shea Butter (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=4586) for her.

Your mom is gorgeous!
I suggest: a Denman brush, Trader Joe's Nourish Spa Shampoo and Conditioner, Sally's GVP Conditioning Balm (or the actual Biolage Conditioning Balm), Honey, Pure Aloe Vera, Garnier Fructis Fiber Gum Putty, and Coconut Oil.

How about an I.O.U. for a scalp massage to be given by you?

Since she bleaches her hair, I think she might like a blue shampoo (takes away brassiness over time). I'm not from USA/Europe so I don't know many brands, but I've heard some good things about Blue Malva on a blonde hair thread.

Coconut oil: if you apply it before bleaching it is supposed to protect the hair.

That is a really nice idea for a gift. I suggest to add aloe vera gel, a wooden comb and Garnier triple nutrition conditioner.

Lovely gift idea for your Mom! BTW she looks super youthful to have a grown daughter, I hope I look like that when my kids are all grown up :D.
I can't think of any good ideas for gifts though, over what has already been suggested. Certainly something for deep conditioning and moisturising, and probably some leave in conditioner, or something to give her hair extra shine.

Very nice!!
But warn your mom that oil fades dye, so be careful about that when using after (her hair might end up brassy). A boar bristle brush sounds nice too, her hair is straight so she won't have to take bigger precautions like curlies.
Honey also makes dyed blonde hair brassy, since it's a lightener when mixed with water (will take away the blue pigments the dye deposits).

Don't know what to suggest, I don't know what kind of products you have availiable there, and everyone already mentioned of everything I thought.
I just think that's a really cute idea for a gift. Hope she enjoys it :)
Let us know how it goes!

Yeah, she's young...she's 40. I'm 25. We often get mistaken for sisters!

Ah, thanks! Hmm...I was going to go for the coconut oil...I'll keep this in mind, though. :)

Where can you get the aloe vera gel? I actually looked for it this past weekend (my bf has really curly hair and I was going to get him some) at Walmart, but I couldn't find it.

Even if oil fades dye, coconut oil is very good for dry, stripped hair (guess how I know )
Nothing that a blue shampoo can't fix, they are these shampoos formulated to help blond or bleached hair remain bright.

I don't really have anything to suggest - everyone has said things I wanted to mention - but it's a really sweet idea. Your mom is very lucky! I'm actually making my mom a basket of sorts from LUSH. She loves their massage bars so I thought I'd make a gift basket. Glad to know I"m not the only one! :)

Well, considering her bleaching and hair straightening habits, I would get a very cone-y serum-perhaps something water-soluble to prevent build-up. Btw, very pretty mum and great idea!

The bleaching is the main problem...she doesn't use a straightener too much. Maybe to fix an unruly wave, but that's about it.
Thanks!

Blue shampoo didn't fix honey lightening for me, it was always a lot brassier. And I didn't say she shouldn't use coconut oil, just be careful with it...a lot of full heavy oilings can fade dye quite a bit (and I always used permanent). I'm a BIG fan of oiling (not coconut oil but that's another story), just couldn't do it as often as I want (which is a lot). I rather explore different ways of conditioning than oil + brassy hair. Plus her hair looks quite straight, not the kind that "really needs" oil. Really shiny too. :) The aloe vera is a nice suggestion, she could mix with conditioner.
Quite a few blue shampoos are more expensive than a "regular shampoo", and that's why I think people don't use them in every wash (a few don't need to). It's a helper, not a miracle, if a lot of dye is stripped by oils/honey, it won't be enough.
Your mom color looks good, I'm not calling it brassy, by the way! It would be just a maintenance product, so she wouldn't have to refresh the whole hair as often.

How about a little recipe card with some of the better known LHC recipes, like Kimberlily's defrizz spray and SMT? You could include all of the ingredients and offer to help her mix them up the first few times.

This is exactly what I was going to do since I can't really afford everything I want to buy/make for her this time around...I was wanting to buy big containers of jojoba oil and coconut oil to split between us (I have none for myself as of yet), but I don't have anything to store it in, so I'd have to buy all that as well. :P

I use the brand "fruit of the earth". On their website (http://www.fote.com/outlets.html) you will find a list with stores.

I get the FOTE Aloe at Walmart -- you just have to know where to look for it (or find someone who works in that department to ask).
At my store, it's in with the hand lotions and/or the sunscreen lotions. Often they only have the "medicated" (green) kind with the sunscreens -- you don't want that kind. You want the clear stuff with the blue cap on it.
I usually find it on the bottom shelf in with the hand lotions -- last time I actually got down on my hands and knees to see it, because the first 3-4 bottles of it on the shelf had already been taken and the stock hadn't been pulled forward, so you couldn't see the next bottle in line when standing.
