View Full Version : I chemically dyed my hair copper orange

I have been wanting to do this for almost a year now and finally did it! I posted a while ago asking for advice on what to use. I know most people here are against chemical dye for good reason, but I just couldn't resist the urge to have beautiful copper hair like so many of the henna-heads here. I just couldn't achieve that sort of colour on my natural hair with henna. I felt stuck in a rut with my natural colour and really wasn't happy, so I decided, to hell with it, I'll be happy with my hair again :D so I chemically dyed it with a professional L'oreal Hicolor dye in Copper.

I went from this: (looks a bit darker here than it really was)

To this:

Wearing pyjamas in both pics, oops!

What do you think? The tones vary in different lights and along the length a bit as I've had my hair all sorts of colours and there must be tints remaining. I'll post a proper picture showing the back to my album when my hair is behaving, I took this because my friend was begging me to show her :) I henna'd over it yesterday to condition and add a bit of permenance to the colour and the henna made it feel a bit woolly  Hopefully that will go away next wash. Strangely the henna made it feel worse than the chemical dye.

Oh and I know my eyebrows look terrible! I usually fill them in with brown eyebrow powder, but I just don't know what to do with them now?!

Wow, that's a gorgeous and bright colour! :) I love it!

I would suggest that if the henna made your hair feel bad, then you need moisture - especially after a chemical dye. To make it feel better, why not do a deep conditioning or oiling?
But as for the colour - I'm a henna head myself so I do love the copper :)

I think that looks brilliant and I could be fooled into thinking you are a natural redhead because you have the colouring for it. I would leave your eyebrows alone. Many redheads have very light brows and yours are perfect.

I really really like it.

Thank you so much everyone :) I'm glad that you think it suits me. And thanks for the comparison to Lily Cole! I've always thought she was pretty but never thought I looked like her :P

I'm going to do as much deep conditioning as possible and an overnight coconut oil soak to restore the condition. I've read that a few people feel that their hair is dry after henna. I can feel that it's stronger though, just dry so I'm happy!

Ooooh! I love it! I think your eyebrows look great, but if you still feel like you need to use a powder or pencil, usually "blonde" shades work well for me and my red hair. I'm naturally a light strawberry blonde and henna my hair a bit darker.

I usually just leave my brows alone, but since they're so light sometimes I fear they won't show up in pictures at special events in the wrong lighting  so I use a blonde eyebrow pencil to fill them in and make them just a shade darker.

Wow it looks great on hair, and has a gorgeous shine! I am also a fan of copper and have done that previously.
Just a question, was your hair henna'd before or not? As I've heard its hard to color on henna.

Thanks for all the compliments and advice, I think I will just get a blonde pencil, I'll find one that has reddish tones rather than ash. I tried out a dark orange eyeshadow but it looked ridiculous :P

Aaroo, My hair had been lightly henna glossed a few months ago but that had mostly faded out I think. But there were red tones at the ends of my hair from it being dyed red last summer, then being dyed brown over that :)

Wow, bright! That's pretty awesome -- I love when I get that brilliant orange from fresh henna, myself.

Eyebrows I'd leave alone or fill them in a bit darker. No need to have them match -- lots of redheads have non-matching eyebrows anyway. Mine have always been near-black.

I think it looks beautiful! You pull off being a redhead very well, with your natural pale skin and greenish blue eyes it almost looks natural on you. Good job!

Yay thank you all for the compliments, I'm glad that you all think it suits me. Only one of my friends has seen it and she likes it, but when I go back to school I think I will get some negative reactions. Although I live in Ireland and there are lots of natural redheads, they get a lot of abuse! I know I will get asked "why on earth would you dye your hair ginger!". It won't bother me though, I love it :)

That looks brilliant! Very natural looking and beautiful! For the eyebrows, I once found a website which specialised in make-up for red-heads.. If you were to google make-up for redheads it may just show up! :)

AH! It looks amazing. You are so lovely. :)
I wish I could do some kind of striking and fun color with my hair. You've given me a renewed longing to become a redhead, but alas with my olive skin, I would look ridiculous.

You do look like Lily Cole! Spot on observation. I would kill for your original color. It's what I try and dye mine to look like. Isn't it funny, we usually never like what we're born with! :) I think the copper orange is beautiful on you and very eye catching. I bet you turn a lot of heads.

Your hair looks great! That's the colour I love, but I'm not quite getting it with henna anymore... oh well... As for eyebrows, I keep mine brown even with red hair ;) and yeah, I have naturally light ones too so I have to fill mine in!!!
