Hi everyone. I'm very interested in how your diet improvements have improved hair quality. I got very sick with chronic fatigue, and it really showed in my hair. It is now thickening up since I've been on the raw food diet. (I'm in week 6). After a change in a healthier diet, did anyone see a change in individual hair thickness, and color (going back to childhood color? Many people (who have been on the raw food diet for a long time) say that hair darkening is a sign of toxin build-up.

Wow, that's interesting. I don't plan to go on the raw-food diet, but is there any other way to remove hair-changing toxins?

going back to childhood color?
Wow, that could be alarming! I was a white-blonde as a kid; my one attempt at platinum as an adult was not pretty.
In any case, my hair has never changed with a healthy diet. I was a vegetarian for 12 years, now back to omnivore; no difference.
The only diet-related hair changes I've had have been during periods of poor nutrition- twice during my vegetarian years I was in situations where I didn't have access to a good variety of foods, and it showed in my hair. Excessive shedding and breakage started to show up after a month or so of bad nutrition.

I don't know if taking supplements would be apart of your question, but I definitely saw a difference in strand thickness after I started back taking vitamins. Wow... I haven't heard about hair darkening being a sign of toxin build up. I would be excited if my greys darkened :D

I can't see how changing your diet can take you back to your childhood colour? but it can change the quality of hair and help you grow better.

I understand that there are many different reasons for a change of diet and many reasons for people wanting to be vegetarian, vegan or on a raw food diet, but moderation and variety is the key to a healthy diet. After all humans are omnivores and not hebivores or carnivores this can most clearly be seen from our teeth, that is why they are moe similar to those of pigs and not sheep or wolves.
Poor diet shows in different ways in different people but may be more visible to other people in your hair as it is clearly visible and irreparable when damaged.

My hair is getting whiter and whiter all the time, but I don't believe it's because I'm becoming more *pure*. Hee hee. It's because I'm getting old.
I was doing some online research the other day looking for natural/food sources of silica, which is good for growing healthy hair. Here's what I found. Horsetail (an herb), beer, bananas, cucumbers, celery, apples, cabbage, cherries, and more that I can't remember right now. Even water, as long as it's hard water, has silica in it.

I've been eating raw food for nigh on 4 maybe 5 years on and off, by that I mean that I splurge occasionally on meat and a Sunday roast, the odd veggie omlette and stuff but yeah my main meals are raw .. I've been on it way too long to actually say weather my hair had a noticable differance, as it was weight loss that I was focused on .. but my hair is shiny and smooth :-)

I am a raw chef and coach by training although I am not actively coaching anyone at this time, and am well connected in the raw community. When I went 100% raw I saw no change in my hair. I am still high raw and have been for several years, and my hair is just as it has always been. It got a lot thinner when my thyroid was giving me trouble but raw/not raw hasn't affected it one iota, nor do I know of anyone else whose hair has, say, changed color or gotten markedly thicker... I have seen people's eyes get brighter and change color when going raw (and eating a much cleaner and more nutrient rich diet), and especially when juice feasting, but hair changing color? Not that I know of. I can better imagine a change in thickness or growth with improved diet than a change in color. That just sounds like... hooey to me. *shrug*

wow... that is amazing about people's eye colour becoming brighter O_O. I just googled it and found a guy who's eyes apparently went from hazel to blue-green. I had no idea ANYTHING could influence eye colour!

When i was in school i had a friend who's eys could change from light green, to darker then hazel, i put it down to mood changes. I just now googled eye health and also looked at the liver
http://www.sensiblehealth.com/Journey-01.xhtml
Its interesting reading, there is a bit in there about the liver being an emotion sensitive organ, then other stuff about toxins.
A few months back i was regularly eating sushi! I've noticed nice shine to my hair in the growth thats come about from then. Also must add i have been regularly eating avocado and also more nuts!! Had major spring shedding a month ago. But generally feel the new growth i have is good! :D
I also am regularly drinking water and have introduced a bit nmore greens in my eating habits and feel my hair has gotten stronger from combining all these. However i have ceased regular sushi eating as im aware of heavy metals in the fish. But still enjoy seaweed when i can!

My hair thickened up noticeably from being on a multivitamin, so I am sure that dietary changes affect it. :)

My hair darkened as I got older because it is a genetic family trait. My grandfather went from toe-head blond to black before his turned grey. As a baby my hair was strawberry blond, as an adult it is almost black. I don't want my baby hair back though. Blackstrap molasses (tastes bad, cut it with Karo) is suppose to help keep your hair from turning grey though so I guess food can do things with the color.

My hair became finer in texture after I started the paleo diet. This affected head hair and body hair.
It cured my chronic fatigue and acne too.

My hair may have darkened because of toxins. I guess the only way to find out if that was the cause is detoxing... Any info on how long it takes on a raw diet to see a difference in the hair color?

Well from what I've read, young children are almost always alkaline. And this is ideal health. As adults we become less so. So it's possible if our hair changes color because of change of alkalinity, we may revert to younger hair color.

Lot's of people who go raw say they lose the grey, but I don't have any and have only been raw for 6 weeks. Keep you posted though.

I think you are fortunate to have such white shiny hair. I'm scared I will become very mousy as I grey.

Just eating lot of organic fruits and veggies, I noticed subtle changes. I would say, cut out the processed food!

Have you ever heard about blondes going blonder? Just wondering because we seem to be the ones that get darker with age.

My grays, which I had at birth and are still there at 40, definitely go black when I eat super well and consume tons of raw greens, particularly kale in mass quantities. And lots of berries and other high-antioxidant foods. Fo sho. I haven't been doing so of late so I can't show you, plus I henna gloss so it's covered up anyway, but on natural hair, it's striking. My hair is gray, gray, gray - then black. I'll get an inch or two of black at the roots depending on how long I have been keeping it up, while the rest of the length is still gray. It's a trip.
I never in a million years would have thought you meant losing gray since you said in your original post you meant hair grew darker with accumulation of toxins and then grew light again as one's diet became cleaner. Going from gray to black is the precise opposite of what you asked about.

1 try to eat 2 raw salads a day with raw fruit then 2-3 servings low sat fat freshly cooked protein[fish etc] or lo fat dairy cottage cheez and lo fat greek yogurt-adding raw flaxseed, raw pumkin seeds and raw sesame seeds[put in a shake with sugerfree almond milk ,whey powder and fresh fruits],also 1 add 1 tsp to 1 tbs fresh olive oil daily -and 1 take 1-2 fish oil tabs a day-the efa's seem to help my skin and hair-

My blond hair is growing darker as I get older; nothing will change that. However, I was anemic throughout high school and some of college. My hair took forever to grow, very prone to breakage, not shiny, looked dull. As soon as I went on a better diet, my hair improved in all the things listed above (not immediately, but gradually, I should say). Anyway, diet improves much more than hair...

Yes, this is what I've heard too. I believe Victoria Boutenko said that when she has a lot of wheat grass juice etc. her hair stays brown, but when she went off it a bit she had a sprinkling of greys come through.
As a result I add wheatgrass powder to my smoothies, but I don't actually have the time or equipment to juice wheatgrass to drink it every day!!
I also saw pictures of someone on the raw food diet whose hair reverted back to its natural colour (not childhood colour, just adult colour before the greys) after going raw. You could see her brown roots and grey on the bottom half of her hair!! This is very inspiring but I find going 100% raw to be very challenging ;).

My hair grew straighter during pregnancy but reverted back after so the ends of my hair are straighter now than the rest. After losing a third of my hair for taking cytostats, what grew back was curlier and darker, but that too was a temporary phase.. I know eating raw diet can turn greying hair back to original color and I have think that it could make new hair growth lighter too if there was alot of toxins and remnants of medications in the body before. But I think some darkening is just natural with aging?
I'm super interested in raw food. It started when we found out that DD is allergic to cow's milk. It makes me mad that she has suffered for two years, and a doctor whose opinion I trusted actually told me that milk didn't have to with it, whenh I asked. We tried so many things, until finally I just decided to go dairy free. DD has loved dairy so much, but surprisingly she now happily drinks oat and rice and almond milk (and eats some goat cheese). She understands that milk was making her feel bad.
I researched food issues and how to make milk free desserts and it just happened, the internet thing, that I was led to some raw food sites and somehow kept reading... I'd noticed that I'd been eating a lot of raw foods already, and my dislike for heavy cooked meals had increased simultaneously. I just never thought about it like that. I decided to start eating mostly raw and offer more raw foods to DD and DH as well. This has absolutely nothing to do with hair, but I do believe that healthy body produces healthy hair :) I ordered a raw food cook book "Evie's kitchen" that is specifically about children on raw diets, because I want good child friendly recipes and information on a balanced diet.

I was on LCHF (Low Carb High Fat) for a while, and I guess I have to say that I definately noticed less breakage during that period. Too bad that the lack of crunch made me go back to eating carbs.
