View Full Version : The Imperfect Hair Thread

WaitingSoLong

I thought I would start a thread where we can share pictures of our hair at its worst, or at least not picture perfect. I think we see these LHC pics of beautiful hair taken on good hair days in the right light, etc. and it is hard to see them as attainable.

So for everyone who thinks I walk around with my hair like my avatar or sig pic or whatever, just realize those pictures were taken with great care and only when my hair was behaving.

SO, here is apicture of my unruly still damp hair. Are you brave enough? Consider this a challenge!

http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/Messy1.jpg

ETA: When my hair dries I will take another pic of what it REALLY looks like loose and dry.

I really love those waves on your ends! It's true about the 'best hair shot' issue. It helps to remember people usually post the best pic. I know I do.

I think once there was a 'bad hair photo' thread here. But the problem is, bad is relative! :) People were posting their 'bad' photos but most of us couldn't really see what was so 'bad' about it.

My hair does that separating thing too. I wore it down for work yesterday and it was in knotty rats' tails by the afternoon. But I don't have any waves . :o

Well this is the worst one I ever had the nerve to save and upload:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=3316&pictureid=69980

And I really made sure it's all hanging together, too! Imagine if I had stood normally and had it all separate. Look at the ends. They're like hay, and sticking out in all directions. hahaha.

When I'm in reach of a camera next week and stand outside in the wind I guarantee I can outdo anybody's bad hair shots

MsBubbles was completely right, 'bad' is relative: I honestly love this, WaitingSoLong. If this is your hair 'at its worst', then I wish mine were at its worst too! I love your hemline in the second picture.
And MsBubbles, your hair's looking great to me, my hemline rat-tails much more than that!

My worst hair days involve my fine hair getting charged and tangling itself, and my hemline rat-tailing awfully. I cringe when I see those pictures. For example, this is my hemline misbehaving after university:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=7193&pictureid=97858
Like I said, I cringe when I see my hemline in this pic, but because bad is relative, maybe you'll like it! :p

I have a whole album of bad hair pictures, lol. I tend to do the opposite of what most people here do. I realized that the lighting in my office made my hair look shinier and smoother than it actually is so I started taking my pics in the bathroom. VERY harsh lighting in that room so all the imperfections show up. I figure I can't get advice on what to do if no one can see the real condition of my hair. Plus if I can make my hair look good in that lighting then I know it looks fantastic in real life :) I'm not there yet but I'm getting close.

BTW these 'at its worst' hair pics put my good hair pics to shame.

For curly longhairs, second day hair after a night of tossing and turning is a problem. Here is a picture of my second day hair (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=6031&pictureid=94886)....frizzy, yuck!

This is what happens to my hair after I damp bun it at night (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=6031&pictureid=97870). {{shudder]]

Okay, I'm depressed now. I have a lot of bad hair pictures that look SO much worse. In fact, I thought all the pictures were beautiful! I don't think I have the heart to show mine....well actually I'm thinking of a really sad attempt at an updo. "Messy cute" on me was absolutely nothing less than messy and stupid.

If we're only talking about 'hair down' pictures then, well, I STILL have some bad ones (but not as scary as that updo!)

I think we can be our own worst critics. Personally, I hate how my hair has one wave on the one side of my avatar picture, but I can't seem to get rid of it unless I blow dry! Which then lasts as long as a photograph flash, and goes back to slightly curly in that one darn section! Let see. While I'm griping, I hate how the flash of my camera turns my hair greenish in certain light, and I'd love to be more bright blonde / dark brown, or anything but mousy colored.

That said, I do like this thread. It's a reminder to me that, while yeah, I am not a professional hair dresser, I'm an amateur hair enthusiast! So here are my efforts. One of them is bound to work out, right?

So far everyone's hair looks fine. My hair has an irregular curl pattern meaning one side of my hair is straighter than the other. I have a cowlick at my left forehead and at the base of my neck on the right. Plus, it tends to frizz. I live in the "tropics" so humidity is pretty consistent, giving my hair free reign. When my hair is not behaving, these things "go off" all at the same time. :slap: The left side is the straighter side (with the cowlick) so my head looks elongated and lopsided because of the cowlick and straighter hair, the right side has curl going from top to bottom so that side is fluffy and extended out. When the frizz wants to join in the fun it's just almost best to wet it down and start all over. Thank goodness for oils to tame the frizz and give some curl control and the flat iron to straighten out the cowlick and my bangs. Yeah. Maybe I'll post pics...

I like the theme of this thread. While I think all the pictures posted show beautiful hair, I also get why you see them as bad. When compared to your "perfect" hair pictures there is a difference. As others have said, we are our own worst critics. :)

So I don't have any really "bad hair" pictures on my computer I'll try to take some and post them. For now I have a brushed out picture that is kind of bad (frizzy and all, but not at it's worst.) http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=7007&pictureid=92733

I think if I posted my "bad hair day" pics it would all be blamed on my silvers and everyone would be so frightened they'd storm the stores for haircolor!

What's funny is that the pics are taken the same day as "good hair day" ones usually, just different lighting, different angles, (or different styles).

I think I just need to work hard on that frizz problem.:)

I think the other thing we forget is that while we usually post only the best pictures, we all go outside and see real live people. And those real live people have all different hair days, good and bad. Many of them with fried hair as well. Since so many of us have relatively shiny healthy hair to start with, of course all of our bad hair pictures will look fine to everyone else.

I've done a couple of washes like this, and my hair always changes it's mind! XD
If I do this and then go to sleep with it down, it dries really quite wavy! But if I'm sitting up and drying I think the weight pulls it straighter? My individual hairs are really quite fine (though I have a lot of them) so I think they're easily influenced by gravity ;p I get a couple of wavy bits at the end, and it does hold a curl well, but the bulk of it is usually straightist :)

I agree. Here's (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=7001&pictureid=100083) my awful hairtype pic, the worst ever in pictures (I think only sweaty bedhead would beat that)...damp combing is really a miracle for me!! Also when I use a BBB looks quite different.

I don't really go for the "best picture" but one that doesn't look too crazy/flyaway/weird color. Plus a little ambient light editing can help a lot, my hair shows up in weird colors sometimes, this can fix (err...bad cam doesn't help XD).

Editing to explain that I'm not a big fan of the curl pattern in the picture on the left (so I'm calling it the bad hair day) but I'm totally happy with the picture on the right (which was the one I used due to better curl pattern). Just didn't want anyone thinking that I don't appreciate my hair. The "bad" one is still fine, but it was not the picture I chose as my April hair photo.

Oooh look in my album for some awful hair! My hair looks much better when I wear it up.

My BIGGEST hair issue is that it's not evenly wavy... one side is much wavier/wurlier than the other, so it just looks bizarre! I have no idea why it does this either. It's also much curlier underneath than on top...

When I wear my hair out I am SOOOOO TEMPTED to go get a Brazilian keratin treatment... I.MUST.RESIST!!!!!

Before I got my trim my hair I took a pic of my hair and it was exactly like this too with the one layer just sitting over everything else, I was like dear god please tell me my layer has not always looked like that because my ends were a fair bit longer than yours but the layer was still high up and it just looked.... so weird on me! Well, my layers are upside down. My canopy is longer and the hair underneath is many inches shorter because of increased damage there (I guess). Here is a picture with the longer layer over my left shoulder and the shorter layer over my right.

Yep! Still did that when my hair was at tailbone. Sometimes it can behave if I can somehow hold it down while it dries (when I was a teenager I held it down flat while I blowdried it straight down and that helped alot--but the blowdrier and I are no longer friends;)). But this hair was dried while I slept on it--that doesn't help at all!

See all the frizz? This is what I live with at least a whole day after washing my hair. It totally gets is own life and does what it wants to do after a wash, and it most often takes two days for it to settle and look and feel somewhat managable again. And yeah, I guess that lightning isn't doing anything good for the frizz either. ;S

@anathema: My hair is always frizzy and fly-away on my wash day, too. I find that smoothing on a tiny bit of glycerin does wonders to keep it down.

Here's a picture of my hair looking all gross and frizztastic after I rag-curled it and then brushed it out. Blech! But it was totally worth it because the rag curls were awesome (see siggy pic).

I don't mind the one in front of my head at all--just a nice lift and wave for me. (It DID bother me when I was a kid, however.) The one in the back of my head can get annoying though! DD5 inherited it from me--again the front one not so bad but the TWO in the back-@#$!

Anathema, that is exactly what my hair looked like yesterday. I did a DCT and a CO wash and the frizz...I usually do not have that kind of frizz. It must be the 100% humidity because my hair was very soft, just incredible frizzy. I don't get why humidity causes frizz? Isn't it moisture?

I think I better go back to cones. I have been cone free for awhile and seems like I have been unhappy about my hair since. Hmmm...

SunshineLiz...have you seen all the pics? There is some pretty steep competition. I almost took a pic of what my hair did yesterday, I had it forced parted in the middle on Sunday, then I braided it to sleep and when I woke Monday my cowlick had sent the front of my hair back over. It was horrible, but it was "bed hair" and I didn't think that was fair.

To me it doesn't look like broken hairs, just regrown hairs! Yeah, you may have SOME broken hairs in there, but odds are it's just that your hair is frizzing a bit from shorter hairs. Some people's sit down flat (lucky) and others have lots of little flyaway bits!

Hair from the very back/bottom of my head

It just grows in coarser and rougher than the rest of my head. It looks and feels terrible, but there's nothing I can do about it, luckily it grows where no one can see it.

Edit: Removed picture of my ugly hair, since this isn't the thread for it

This is what my hair does when left alone to airdry after a wash:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t262/schweedie/Hair/imperfect.jpg

Clumps together and looks thin and stringy. Actually, it looks like that about five minutes after I've brushed it, too. My hair just doesn't like to look nice.

You gals haven't had bad hair untill you suffer from a major case of hairloss.
This was last year, already during the recovery stage, I had been under a lot of stress and got really sick during the summer.
Those bangs used to be bald spots, I could never wear my hair up like that without feeling like sh*t.
I also had to cut it from elbow length to barely BSL because of damaged ends.

Now I am fully recovered, no longer have bangs poking at my eyes, the length is almost at elbog again, and the worst my hair has is a little frizz that I don't even bother to consider as a bad hair day. I am too happy with my hair now :cloud9:

And now, for the pictures of Doom:

RitaPG you and I have the same front hairline. I have those wispies you say are from hairloss ALL the time. They will eventually get long enough to pull back and then it is like another "row" or hair appears...not that my hairline is moving forward. Like reverse shark teeth LOL. Your hair seems really thin in those photos.

Oh, and this is the IMPERFECT hair thread, not the ugly or horrible hair thread :)

WaitingSoLong, it was the only time I thought my hair was, well, imperfect.
Not that I think it's perfect nowadays, but nothing about it bothers me enough to post a picture here.
I think some people have those wispy bangs naturally, but I never have them, that's why I say it was from hairloss, it was the only time it happened. Also, I had bald spots. They're all grown up by now ^^
You wouldn't believe the amount of thickness those things took away from my braid back then.
I should try to find a picture of my fried ends shudder:

That comment was not directed at you or your picture :o sorry if it came out that way!

It just seems this thread is becoming a competition for the worst hair pictures or something. I just wanted it to be a place to post those imperfect pictures that make our hair "real" and not some angelic thing that cannot be obtained by an actual human. Just trying to keep it on track :)

Here's mine....Freshly CO washed, no oil...air dried and Tangle Teezer detangled. THIS is why I usually have my hair up or have oil in it. It's so flippin' fine and flyway that it's just everywhere two seconds after I comb it, etc. So, rather than have it look like poo all the time...I keep it oiled lightly and up.

a challenge for me would be trying to find a picture where I'm not having a bad hair day but I recall my hair being at its worst when I was pregnant. It decided to hate coconut oil, it stopped curling and just lay in this flat soggy looking pathetic mess most of the time. I had no idea what to do with it during my whole pregnancy.

Embrace the baby face! You'll look young even when you're old. Slightly annoying when you get stopped by police when you're out past curfew (personal experience from my 20s) but worth it later!

Oh I don't know, most people figure I'm not that young when my kids follow me everywhere constantly saying "MOM." Plus my gray hair streaks throw them off. They either think I'm older than my face says or that I'm a weird trend follower and dye it (at least they think it's weird where I live.) Well, some figure correctly that I'm a premature grayer.

DH has a baby face too, but at least he's finally gotten to the point that people don't think he's an older teen anymore! He's always hated it more than me. Of course I REALLY hated it when someone thought he was my younger brother, when he's four years older! (Dang you gray hair! At least that's how I felt then and got sucked into my one and only hair coloring session)

Sorry for the hijack.

Angeletti...what do you do to combat the baby hair fuzz? I think we all deal with this but I wonder if having straight hair makes it stand out more? Cones are the only thing I have found that work unless I want to oil extremely.

Myotis: I love that: "deliciously oily strands" !

Sunshine: My kids follow me around they everyone thinks they are my SIBLINGS. My sons are both taller than me and apparently I look the same age as my 19 year old. That is ok, we like to have fun with it. Once we milled around a garage sale and after a bit he said (loud) "hey MOM, come look at this" and then we watch everyone's faces. The problem is I am alone most of the time as I run all my errands while the kids are at school. Ok, end hijack (can one hijack one's own thread?)

Cones work wonders for me, for some reason my hair hates oiling or I'd probably try that as well. I usually apply a conditioning mask in the shower to the upper portion of my hair along with the length and then follow up with a leave in conditioner with cones in case the shorter hairs decide they want to frizz later on when they dry. As far as clarifying goes I think I'm going to do just my length next time because I'm guessing it's just too harsh on the rest of my hair.

In looking through the imperfect hair pictures, I am wondering if we all should have back-up hair styles for the times when hair is going to be imperfect no matter what we do. Some of the imperfect hair, for example, was too "rowdy" in the opinion of the person under it. However, as a person with thin, fine hair, I liked its look, frizz and all. Maybe we can find ways to embrace the stringiness, frizziness, sparseness...the shortcoming--and make it work.

That's an excellent thought, DC!

I have my "usual" updo, and then when my hair just refuses to behave, I just tie it down in a braided bun. Oddly, I get a lot more comments on my hair when I do that. I think it looks comples so people assume it takes a lot of work.

I was thinking the same thing about the shirt ;)

I think a lot of us have default styles we do on bad hair days. My thing is, my hair does not really look as nice as it does in my carefully selected photos. Example: I decided not to shave my legs for a month (call it boredom, I wanted to see how long my leg hair is) and so today was the end of my...erm...test? and I tried to take a picture of my hairy legs before I shaved. No matter what I did, I could not get the hair to show up in the photos. So I gave up and shaved. The point: photos are not a true picture. So when I think I have taken a picture the shows what my hair really looks like (as I see it), I will post it here to show that what appears to be lovely hair is, in fact, far from it most of the time! All this so as not to aspire to something impossibly perfect looking as pics on LHC tend to be.

Fortunately we all have those good hair days, too :)

I think that's absolutely true for most, if not all, of us, Waiting. That's why I started my album with a "before" picture. It looks a bit better than that most days since I have started paying attention again, but in recent postraits with my hair down, I saw that, no, those carefull selected photos really aren't "true" in any but an ideal sense. Still, when I get frustrated, those pictures do help. :p
