Do you need hairsticks for a Nautilus?

I know I'm doing it right, but it just won't stay put! :mad: My mom has been doing this bun since she was a teenager and she never used anything to secure it. She says it's because she always wore hers with coconut oil, which I can't exactly do at my school.

If you don't use oil, do you have to have hairsticks to keep it in place?

I think some curlies can keep it in without anything. I need some assistance, being a 1b. ^_^

However, you don't need to use a hair stick. I used to use a Flexi-8 and I'm sure any (large) barrette-type thing would work ok too.

P.S. If that's you in your profile picture, I don't think you're a 1a. More like a 1c or more, in my (very) inexpert opinion. However, that would still be plenty straight enough to require some sort of hairtoy for a Nautilus. I seem to recall only 3s and 4s doing it stickless, although I may be wrong.

I need something, though it has the potential to stay put for a few minutes if I make it absurdly tight. It does seem like curly-haired folks, and people with less slippery hair in general, can make buns that stay without securing. It's possible to do this with slippery hair that's long enough, but it takes some sneaky tricks, like tying bun-knots that tighten themselves as they slip.

I need to all but nail any bun to my head otherwise it will just fall apart so I definitely need sticks and forks to keep such a bun up, if it will stay up at all.

I really need to get some proper hair accessories! I have only the very basics (hair elastics, bobby pins, etc.), and I plan on getting hair sticks and forks when I go to Paris on Sunday (I'll be shocked if I can't find anything there!).

Oil makes my hair more slippery, so I'm not sure how that would help, but I guess curly hair is kind of magic like that. :D I need something to hold a nautilus bun, but it doesn't have to be sticks; it'll hold with a hair fork, a flexi-8 or large barrette, a ficcare with a bit of persuasion, or pins. In a tight spot, there's always pencils. :)

The gibraltar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXfp_wANOkw) is the only bun I can get to stay without pins or sticks or anything. Its somewhat similar to a nautilus but formed differently. I have to do a tightish first loop to get it to hold on its own though... and it works best when my hair is a bit tangly.

A Nautilus will hold fine with pins. Both spin pins (the corkscrew spiral kind) and U pins of a couple sorts will work.
