View Full Version : Help a newbie type her hair?

I've know for years that I'm a mostly wavy, but a few months ago I started noticing curls in my fringe and at the nape of my neck.

I wasn't too shocked as my dad is a 3, but my mom's a 1 and know I'm stuck in some crazy land with all three types!

So, I now have no idea how to classify my hair.

I tried to post the pictures instead of the links, but they refused to be anything but alarmingly gigantic. Here's hoping these pictures actually show up. . . and I apologise for the fairly poor quality on the last one if they do.

What have you done to your hair prior to taking a photograph? If I condition/ comb/ air dry or turban/ air dry I get a few kinks and waves. If I briefly scrunch in conditioner and air dry there are ringlets and curls! For that reason this thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=31563) recommends typing be done after a clarify, no conditioner, no combing, just drip dry. :)

Looks roughly 2b.

Don't be terribly surprised if it changes in the coming months. With changes in washing technique and hair health, a lot of people find waves get more pronounced, though a few folks go the other direction.

Whoa. I made a quick trip home from work before classes and was surprised to find replies. Thank you for the comments and compliments!

Jojo is it weird that this made me happy dance?

[/B]Firefox[/B] I just clarified and fingercombed a bit of conditioner to prevent turning into a frizz ball and then air dried, but I'll definitely try again without the conditioner and see what happens. Thank you for the tip.

Anje the curls did start to appear after I started CWC, so I think you're right on the money. Thank you, I look forward to finding new wurls. :)

I never understood that method, honestly. If that's not how you do your hair every day, then why do it when you're trying to classify the curliness? Furthermore, not combing it would seem to me if there were knots or tangles in it after washing, it would dry in kinky positions due to those.

Curlies are usually advised to detangle whilst conditioner is on only; if you use a good conditioner you shouldn't really need to detangle afterwards. You are trying to classify the natural waviness not the level of curl in your styling method. A curl pattern doesn't really look like knots and tangles, it's more uniform.

Up until recently my 'styling method' was a vigorous brushing and wet ponytail, what would I have learned by typing my hair your way? I already knew it looked a mess without a vat of hairspray! :o Many girls who type after a clarify learn they have curls they never knew existed, which prompts them to change their styling technique.
