View Full Version : thinking of an asymmetrical hair cut...

I have been thinking of cutting the under sides of my hair very short. Not shaved, but very short. I had my hair cut like this when it was about chin length a couple of years ago. I loved it but then i have cut my hair into a pixie a couple times since then & now have been growing out my last pixie for a little over a year. My hair is a little past shoulder these days. I have pics in my photo album if anyone wants to see my progress.
I adore the look on this model, Alice Dellall. I would want my hair to look like tis when it's longer.

Any opinions? I am seriously wanting to do it but i just figured i'd get some of ya'lls opinions. :p

I love that cut - it's so feminine and edgy at the same time! I have seen a girl at work with a similar cut, but she leans a bit more towards the punk end of the spectrum. Works great on her, and others with wonderful bone structures :D

It takes ages to grow out if you get tired of it and style options become limited but otherwise I think it looks pretty awesome. Go for it if you're sure!

Thanks everyone! I really love it but the whole "growing out phase" if i decide not to keep it someday is the only think making me doubt doing it. I will mull it over a bit longer but i usually say that life is short & we should do what we wanna & not regret it. Have fun, right? So i think i'll probably wind up doing it. :p

There's quite a few members on here with undercuts. If you want to do it then go for it! It's a great way to shake things up but keep your length. Just make sure you can handle growing it out if needs be.

It seems to me that you like cool funky styles and hey, what's the point of having hair if you don't have fun with it?
I'd love to see pics from members here with undercuts!

It's up to you. It's not my style and I certainly wouldn't want to grow it out, but I'm not the one considering doing it.
I do suggest you think about it for a while before actually cutting it. It'll postpone your knee-length hair goal perhaps, but that might be OK with you.

If you planned it the right way, you could most likely hide the undercut if you needed to by pulling your longer hair over it right? I'm just thinking if you do decide to grow it out someday, then it might be easier to part your hair on the opposite side of the undercut and pull it overtop, I doubt youd even be able to notice much once it was around chin.

oh also one more thing! Perhaps try putting the hair you want undercut into corn rows? to see what it would look like before you cut...I just saw that on...tumblr haha yeah.

I say if it is what you truly want and cannot envision yourself clearly regretting the decision, follow your desires and do so !! Your hair is there to be enjoyed and loved.
I love people who are brave and bold enough to try funky colors and styles. Have fun. :blossom:

In college I wore a chin length bob, tired of battling my wavy crazy thick hair (I wanted a slick straight bob!) I pony tialed the top section and had a barber shave the entire bottom section off (think ear to ear, about the bottom third from the nape on up) it was great, looked great, hung great, looked edgy and cool when I wore it up. Yeah it was all great until I got asked to walk in my Aunt's big formal wedding. She really wanted everyone to have the same formal up-do. yeah, well mine was the only one down that night!

I think it would look AWESOME! I was actually going to do something similar myself--but more of a short choppy cut on one side, gradually fading into looooong hair on the other. Maybe I still will, who knows? Those pics you posted are reeeeally making me consider it! =)

Hee, this reminds me that I had the sides of my head shaved when I was in college. In the 1980's. What comes around goes around! Took me four years to grow it out, but I loved it when I had it.

It would be painful to grow out. But I am thinking of more fringe and bangs for me and those are a pain to grow out as well and I do that once in awhile anyways. I think if you kinda layer it as it grows and keep it kinda fun it would only be painful once the top layers get below the ears. Then you'd probably go for layers on the other side too. So I think you could grow it out without being totally awkward the whole entire time or having an Asymmetrical look during the entire process.

Isn't this hair style about 10 years old? That's when people were wearing it around here, anyway.
It's hard enough to get to knee length with enough thickness. I think this would set you back considerably.
But hey - I'm old fogie, so who cares what I think?

I will be honest its not my cup of tea but I am a 40 something! but if hair is for enjoying and if its what you want go for it!
I agree though it will be a pain to grow out!

Do it! Your hair is short enough that you wouldn't be losing TOO much length/time growing it out. Be sure to post pics. Alice Dellal is gorgeous!

It's cool lookin', but like many have stated, I too would hate the growing-out stages. I think of that hairstyle as sort of trendy and emo; the novelty could wear off rather quickly.

Yea, that's actually exactly what i plan to do. So while growing it out it could be a pain in the butt in some ways, i'll be able to hide it most of the time. :)
Thanks for all the input everyone! My hair is very thick so i think this will be a great thing for my crazy hairs & i am planning on having DH do it tomorrow. I have been thinking about it for awhile & it has nothing to do with any "trends" or such as i seriously barely know what goes on around me. I just love that look & i have done it before (but with shorter hair) & loved it so i wondered if i should do it while growing out my hairs.
I am soooooooooo excited!!! :p

I'd never do it on myself - I hate that kind of cut! But thisi is only my opinion, if you like it and you've made up your mind, why not!?!
wish you luck!

That looks pretty bada** (sorry, first word that came into my mind when I saw the pictures)
I'd say go for it! I don't think the growing out process would be too bad, but I've never had an undercut, so what do I know :P

Yeah it was all great until I got asked to walk in my Aunt's big formal wedding. She really wanted everyone to have the same formal up-do. yeah, well mine was the only one down that night!
This is what I was going to mention. I had the lower half of my head shaved for a long time as a teenager, and there were a couple of occasions when I would really have loved to wear a nice updo, but...
The rest of the time I loved it. It was just really inconvenient once in a while.
Are you sure you're cool with no more elegant updos for a while? If you're not worried about it, then do what you want and have fun! :D

I had my hair cut like that my sophomore year of high school (1986). It was in a chin-length bob but shaved underneath. I loved it.

I love it! :) I didn't expect to like it, but now i think it's pretty amazing! I'd do it too...it's so sexy. But don't think it fits my personality, or i possibly need more thickness...
looking forward to seeing how it will look as your hair gets longer!

Both sides?! Very cool! I have asked my wife if she would like this style but she wasn't sure. But it looks great on you! You should French braid the middle!

:o Yea, i wasn't sure exactly what i was gonna do when i started this thread...so i actually got what is called an "undercut." Should i ask to have the title changed? :o

No, because a one sided undercut is asymmetric. Both sides undercut is symmetric. It does not matter in the end!
But I have to ask. Did you plan to do one side and then change your mind? Or were you always thinking both? Alice Dellal has only het left side shaved.

I kno Alice has only one side & originally i wanted both, then i saw her & changed to one side, then looked at other pics & decided i wanted both sides. :p I am glad i did both!
