View Full Version : Tell me your braided length?

Apologies if this is the wrong forum...
I've been thinking about braided length vs. loose length lately, and wondered if there was a pattern to how much length is 'lost'. Does hair lose more length in one braid, or two, or Dutched, or Frenched, or what? Does longer hair lose more length, proportional to the length of hair, than short hair?
So, I was thinking about attempting to make a graph showing braided length vs. loose length, in an attempt at answering my questions.
However, I only have one head (surprise surprise), and instead of waiting a couple of years for my hair to grow and measuring it all the way, I thought I'd ask you lot if you'd mind telling my your braided/unbraided lengths :)
I don't particularly mind what sort of braid you measure, as long as you can let me know what sort it is, because obviously, a 5-strand Dutch-style braid is going to use up a lot more hair per inch than a standard English braid.
Anyone care to help me out?

Here are my measurements:
- Loose: 79cm/31 in
- Normal English braid started at the nape (with a 8cm/3 in tassel):
75cm/29.5in (not too tight, not too loose)
70cm/27.5in (braided as tight as possible)I'll make a French braid with one half of my hair and a Dutch braid with the other half later, I'll be back then with more measurements. Double braids should take up less length :)

Sorry don't have a good measure so have to do it like this:
Lose: longest hair about 1.5 cm above tail bone length.
Single 3 strand braid started at the nape with about 7cm tassle: longest hairs just reach hip length.
Overall I think it's a bout a 4 or 5 cm difference. I think very think hair will lose more length than thinner hair when braided.

OK, I'm back :)
Double braids (with 7cm/2.7 in tassel): French, Dutch and English are all 75cm/29.5 in

The hair tie on my braid (I braid tightly) falls right in the middle of my bum. You can see the length is just above knee/Nee. I'd say I "lose" 4-5 inches only because it's not very thick.

My hair loose is at classic and braided in a medium tight English or French braid (started halfway down my head) my hair reaches tailbone. That's about a 6 inch difference. My hair's about 40.5 at classic and 35 at tailbone.

About the same amount of lost length as Shell on the English braid exept my hair is at thigh, 45.5" and goes up to just a bit shorter than classic, 40-42" depending on tightness.
On French and Dutch braids my braid ends at tailbone.

Here are my measurements:
Loose: 37 in.
Normal English braid started at the nape (7.5 in. tassel):
~ 36 in. (kinda loose)
~ 34 in. (braided as tight as possible)
Single Dutch (7 in. tassel): 34 in.
Double Braids:
English tight as possible (4 in. tassel): 31 in.
Dutch tight as possible (5.5 in. tassel): 32 in.

I don't know in measurements, but my hair is a tad past tailbone. When english braided it is about hip. When french braided it is about waist.

Because I'm really bored I measured the braid my hair is currently in. My hair itself is about 37" long. The braid my hair is currently in is about 27" long, plus a tassel of about 6".
Thickness-wise it starts at about 3" at the nape and tapers gradually down to nothingness (hence the long tassel).

Nothing exact, sorry... My braid's at classic, my loose hair's at fingertip.
I think thickness is more important than length, though length may play into thickness for those of us with a sharp taper (points to self). Over the period of long hair my braid's almost always be one major step away from my loose hair (braid at waist, loose at tailbone, etc.)

When I had more layers, I had a lot of taper but in the past 2-3 years, I've let it grow out and then trimmed up the bottom to match, so they're almost gone. As a result, I can braid all the way to the end pretty well and it's about 2.5 inches around at the tip. I've been having very little, if any, breakage in the past 6 months or so and that makes me really happy... the ends look great.
However, because of this and the fact that my hair is very straight, I lose a LOT of length when I braid. It's about 34 inches now so it's in the middle of my hips and when I put it in a single english braid, the end is about 3 inches past bsl. I'm losing a good... 4-5 inches easily. I haven't measured but I know where it lands on my back and it's a lot shorter.

A standard english braid from the nape falls a bit below bsl, my longest hairs are at the tippy top of hip.

Loose 115 cm / 45,5 inch
English braid 105 cm / 41,3 inch, with 5 cm / 2 inch tassel, with normal medium tightness.
French or dutch braids are the same length on me, they just taper quicker than an English braid does.
If I remember IŽll also measure the other braids I do :)

29 inches loose, 17/18 inches in a high braid/fairly tight (above nape of neck, but not a pony tail braided)

I don't know measurements. I have layered, curly, thick hair that has a fair amount of shrinkage to begin with. Stretched out, my longest layer is below hip. If I do one braid in the back, it falls to about the top of my bra strap.

My standard English braid measures 37" to the end of the tassel.
Last 'official' loose length measurement was two months ago (see under my avatar), so I'm going to round that up to 42". :p
In body landmarks, that means my braid is hip length, while my actual length is just past tailbone.

My loose length is 29", or longer than BSL but not quite waist on me. My braided length (English braid) is 26", exactly BSL.
