View Full Version : How tight is your braid?

I was wondering, how tight does everyone hear braid their braid?

Close to scalp I braid it loosely then after I get about 2 bumps I start to braid it more tightly.

I have lots of layers so I braid tightly to try to keep the escapees to a minimum.

As tight as I can get it, because it inevitably loosens itself as the day goes on.

My hair isn't amazingly thick, so I usually make my braids on the looser side. That way they look thicker :)

tight, especially at night, otherwise it loosens and gets tangled

I put 'tight as possible' but even if I tighten after every crossover it never looks nearly as tight as some braids I've seen. But my hair is poofy/voluminous (can't decide which :p).

I braid somewhere between loose and tight, probably a little closer to tight. I'd call it snug.

Loose, but I would braid tight if I physically could. Just can't figure it out.

It depends on my mood. I usually need it tighter because my hair is so smooth, but I do like a loose french braid. It just looks more romantic that way.

I voted cheese because my hair does what it wants despite my best effort.

I prefer to braid as tightly as possible. My hair is quite slippery, so I need the snugness to keep things looking neat and tidy. Oh, and I can't forget the layers popping out. It drives me crazy. I only really like to do looser braids when my hair is dirty because I have somewhat less slip.
One thing I really dislike about braiding tightly is that it shows my taper more.

It depends on my mood. Sometimes I like it loose and sometimes I like to braid tightly.
GeoJ

Variable for me. Sometimes tight, sometimes loose, sometimes in between tight and loose. Sometimes I'll start tight and make it looser as I braid down to hide the taper.

Very tight, I like the feeling of a secure braid versus a floppy one.

When my hair was long enough to braid I always started it very tight and made it very loose at the tail to make it seem thicker.

When doing french or dutch then I try not to do it very tightly because my head will start aching. When it's just an English braid then I usually do it tightly.

if I have a headache I braid loose, but otherwise I braid tight :)

My hair is sometimes conducive to loose, other times tight, and often a sloppy (I think so anyways) mix of the two.

Cheese. :)
I don't like to braid my hair too tight or it hurts, but I don't like how it looks loose, so my braids have medium-tension.
What I've been doing recently is braiding and then not securing the ends, which means over time my braid gets loose, though. I like this look because I don't have to worry about damage on my ends, and my hair is long enough that it'll stay braided and keep out of my way. :)

April 12th, 2011, 01:25 AM
Tight enough that it looks tight, not tight enough for it to pull my hairs.
Venefica
April 12th, 2011, 02:30 AM
I try to make the first bump even but relatively loose so as to not pull on the hairs, and then I make the rest fairly tight, or I try to, I have hair with a mind of it's own so there are days where I just have to take the braid that I get.

I braid as tightly as I comfortably can without causing damage. I find it loosens quite a lot on its own, and I don't want it to loosen so much it comes undone. I recently found a photo of my braid when I was just learning though - it looks so much thicker because it was loose (the best I could do at the time).

I usually do this too. I got the idea from a post somewhere by Spidermom, I think, just after I joined LHC. It had never occurred to me before! As long as I don't make it too extreme it works well for me.

I usually do a pretty loose braid, but most of the time I braid just for sleeping and it's too uncomfortable if it's too tight. I get some wispies escaping by morning, but the length stays braided so I'm happy with that.
Hile
April 12th, 2011, 07:01 AM
I prefer my braids to be rather loose. If braided too tight the braid becomes stiff and my hair doesn't have enough weight for it to lie nicely.
Nessie_
April 12th, 2011, 02:08 PM
I prefer to have my braids rather tight during the day, but if I wear a braid to bed and I don't want braidwaves in the morning, I'll wear my braid loose. So it really depends on whether or not I'd like my hair to be wavy the next day :).

I like my braids tight, because I can't stand having that "are they going to fall out and look crappy?" feeling.

April 12th, 2011, 02:36 PM
I've done both tight and loose braids. It all depends of what style I want for the day. I typically do a loose English braid when I just need to do a quick style to wear my hair back. But, when I'm doing a French Braid or cornrows, I always braid them very tight, because those kinds of styles require that you hold the hair sections tighter in order for them to look neat.

Usually pretty tight or a mix but sometimes I'm in the mood for the loose, tousled, pulled out side braid look so it's depending on my mood I guess.

I tend to braid as tight as I can so that when I tie the end off I end up not feeling like I just ruined the braid. O have thick Jair and it always loosens up a bit and looks best once it has done that.

I find if I braid too tight I have headaches within 4 hours of going out! So I tend to have mine on the looser side, but hair falls out that way.. There is no winning with hair sometimes!

I voted 'depending on my mood', but it can also depend on the style I want to do and what I want it to look like in the end.

April 22nd, 2011, 07:04 PM
Like I voted, depends on my mood.
If it's one of those days where you roll out of bed, and just want to collapse on the floor; I either quickly throw my hair into a tight braid at the scalp and increasingly looser towards the band (Due to laziness, of course) or a ponytail.
However, when I aim to please someone, It's incredibly tight at the scalp and that flaunting messy look towards the end.

Loose- tight mix....If its tight towards the end my hair gets tangled or knotted.
RitaPG
April 27th, 2011, 07:48 PM
voted Losse-Tight Mix.
But it depends on my mood. When I'm going for school, it's windy, or I'm staying at home and want a neat secure style that will last all day, I put on a tight french braid (not too tight, just enough to stay close to the scalp)
When I'm in a romantic or girly mood, or feel like getting "pretty", I put on a loose side braid. It never gets that adorable messy look that curlies have when they braid, but I still like it ^^'

April 28th, 2011, 08:27 AM
I voted loose-tight mix...I prefer to braid very snugly (not enough to pull, just snug), but if there are more than four strands the result always ends up loose. And if I braid very far down, the end of the braid winds up looser because it's harder to keep the strands in place.

I voted depending on my mood. Occasionally I braid very tight because of my hair type, like when I'm going to sleep or to windy place. Otherwise the braid will come apart of my slippery hair. But for instance in parties I prefer the loose, easy-going and cool look. Looser braid also flatters my face shape more.

Depends on my mood.
Sometimes I prefer the look of a clean, neat tight braid. But sometimes, when I'm not at work mostly, I prefer a looser more relaxed braid.

I used to braid much tighter but I worry about breakage and damage now.
I would say medium - loose at the top and tighter near the ends. I consciously try to keep it looser but when I do it soon gets wispies and pokey-outy bits which I HATE, lol.
I would TOTALLY braid cheese if I could only stop eating it!!! :cheese:

Yep, this. I also braid tight because I braid after my shower at night and I want well-defined waves in the morning and I don't want it to come undone while I toss and turn at night.

I think it's super cool that some people seem to like the tight braid and others don't. As i've stated before, I do love it tight. Why? because I think it looks better that way. That, and I do oh so love how neat it looks.

Ironic, given your avatar. XD Have to say, I LOVE it! That's one of my favorite bits in the movie! ^_^
I tend to braid my hair looser, otherwise I get a headache. XP I only braid it tightly at night.

It's depending on my mood. When I'm riding my motorbike its a tight braid. Otherwise it will tangle. When I braid my hair normally its a bit loose so it looks thicker :D

Well, I voted "loose", but now that I think about it, it's really a "loose-tight mix". I start out braiding it tight so it will stay neat-looking and won't come undone, but then I gradually make it looser so the ends won't be pencil thin. Tight braids make my hair look really thin.

Tight. I like the look of a tight braid, even though it gets really thin toward the ends

When my mother braids my hair ,which is very often,at least talking about French & Dutch braids, but also when doing a single English braid, then the braiding is always really tight & neat. It is the only way she knows how to braid hair,as anything else than tight & neat is messy, and she criticises all things messy :-)

Depends on the mood for me. If I am braiding to put my hair out the way or in a style then loosely. If I'm damp braiding for waves then I prefer to braid tightly.

I voted lose though due to my shortest layers only being at chin length I'm not braiding my hair at this moment. I don't like anything tight/pulling on my head though, so lose is the way to go for me with everything; bun, ponytail and later also braids!

Loose-tight mix, because I don't have so long hair to make only loose braid, so I mix these two. When it get's longer, I think that I'll be preferring loose braids over tight ones.

I never braid my hair tightly, unless I'm doing it to achieve waves or something. My hair has a much eadier time breaking off if it's tightly knitted together as apposed to a loose braid; where it has room to move and such without breaking.

Depends on my mood. sometimes i braid it tightly and sometimes loose. whatever i do, finally my braid gets loose because of the smooth texture my hair has. so i dont bother much.
i used to braid it loose and now doing it tight because of layers. even if i braid tightly, after sometime, all the front layers will be on my face :D

I braid semi-loosely because it protects my strands from too much tension and the braids are more flexible and easier to pin the way I want them to.

Tight gives me a headache :( I only do a tight braid if I'm taking my heels choreography class cuz I know it's going to come loose anyway. Otherwise I just do a braid with regular tension, then massage the braid and my scalp a little so it looks fuller.

Medium tightness so it doesn't cause pain and that i am not aware. If your aware of a braid then its too tight.

I used to braid very tightly. But over time breakage from that tension made it more difficult to tame shred which was the original reason for tightness. Live and learn.

I've got a whole head of shred
If you want to tame shred, use gel. It's like gorilla glue but you can rinse it out. And don't braid tight when WET. Looks "neat"-er but shrinks when it dries - more tension and over time more shred

Fun hack for braid shred, using some aloe vera gel is really good for keeping braids in place, plus it acts as a nice humectant as well!
I tend to braid on the tighter side, but not super tight, especially for my sleep dutch braid to keep the section where it transitions into a normal braid closer to my neck so it doesn't flop everywhere. That's about the only time I braid my hair nowadays because I'm self conscious about how stumpy my braid is at this length
