Hi everyone,
I am finally here - one whole year without trimming!!! There were times when it seemed so far away and how would I ever get there, but I did.

Now when I say "no trimming", I did S & D and I think this is what kept me from blowing it many a time.

Without further ado here are my results:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4002/4663232204_d9a1208e49.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/30978946@N03/4663232204/)http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5099/5583678067_438684c59b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/30978946@N03/5583678067/)

Now I have been having some trouble with my hair of late. It was behaving all wild and just not sitting right. Well, after a good old clarify and cone-free conditioner it is back to it's old self again. I do think cones work for me only in moderation and I have to remember to clarify when all seems wrong.

I got a total of 7 inches in the one year. I wanted to know this so that's why I did the experiment.

Now what? Umm, well you can see I have coloured further down my shirt so I guess I'm going to try to get to hip but I might just have a trim again to get it all evened out.

That is fantastic...and such an inspiration for me to not trim my hair for a year!

Your hair looks so healthy too...I recently had to have a bit cut off as it was so damaged, but now I have no excuse to not leave it alone :)

Oh, your hair is just beautiful. It doesn't strike me as needing a trim. What does strike me is how beautiful the longer hair is for your body shape. See what I mean? It is very flattering.

Congratulations! It looks really pretty. You should try to go another year since your hair somehow magically grows out so healthy and with a perfect hemline. Seriously, your hemline is better than mine and I trimmed less than a month ago :)

From the picture it doesn't look like you need to trim yet at all.

julliams, your hair looks fantastic!! The color and curl pattern are just to die for, and it looks so healthy! You got so much growth, and I never would have guessed that you'd gone a year without trimming.

Gorgeous!

Very lovely hair with terrific growth, and with all the spirals I see, I'd put you at 2C instead of 2B.

I usually get 7 inches in a year of no trimming also, but I always end up with so many split ends that I get a big cut and end up with less gain than I get when I trim regularly. For instance, the gain for this past year of no trimming was 0 because of the amount I had to cut (snarly, split all to pieces, seriously roughened cuticle in places, like Velcro).

The last year I trimmed regularly, I gained 5-1/2 inches that I got to keep.

What beautiful hairs you have! The color is gorgeous too. That is very impressive growth.

Since my pixie cut in february 2009 i have not trimmed my hairs at all. So just a little over a year now. I am seeing how long i can go without a trim & get my hair as long as possible first.

Julliams, your hair is beautiful. Can't believe how much it's grown in one year. Am six months into the "no trims challenge" but the progress is soooo much slower. You must be really pleased - I hope you are, because you have length and beauty. :D

Thank you everyone - I am overwhelmed with the response. I guess when I look at that photo it does look like I could go on and leave it. I'm not sure what I should do. In person I see it a little differently.

Last year I bought one of those deals online. I have a wash, redken treatment, cut and blowdry all for $59 at a high-end salon in the city. I have until August 23rd to use it.

To be honest I'm now a little nervous to go and use it. I remember how much better my hair was the last time got it trimmed but I also remember discovering that it was over 2 inches that was cut off even when I was very specific about having only one inch cut off. I guess I'll just see how I go. August is 5 months away and I would be almost at hip if I left it until then.

With regards to your current dilemma, looking at the photo your hair doesn't 'seem' to be in need of a trim. So unless you want to lose some length, i probably wouldn't trim.
Can you 'trade the voucher in for a different service, ie - 2 redken treatments instead of the cut? Depending on the salon they might be ok with it? Or just use it and skip the cut bit - a wash, treatment and blow dry will still be a nice pamper :)
Either way i'm sure your hair will still look stunning!

ETA: you really don't need to cut your hair.I think your hemline looks perfect.I understand it's already included in the deal but you can never really know how much they'll cut and there's no need to take such risk.

Well I have until August to use it which is 5 months away so I'm sure I'm going to want a trim by then, you know, just 'cause. Hair does grow somewhat unevenly and at some point I want to get rid of that last layer I have there. I'm sure a small trim won't hurt. At this length I'm just happy that it's past waist so as long as it stays at waist I will be happy.

I'm going to ring them and have a chat and see if they have someone who specialises in cutting long hair.

Very pretty. It doesn't need a trim at all, unless of course you want a more blunt shape. But I think it looks great as it is. I am really happy for you that no trimming worked out, and it's a big help for me, too. I've not had a trim since December 2009, but I only started taking better care of my hair since December 2010. I'm not planning on trimming (I want to get to waist so badly), and the fact that you got by with just S&D (as that's what I'm doing) is very motivational. Great curls and color, by the way.

Did you wear it up a lot to protect the ends?

I wear it up for work and on and off, like if I'm cleaning the house or something but not with the intent of protecting the ends. I actually love wearing it out but I am conscious that there is a time and a place for that as I work with children so that is not the best (given that there is always going to be someone with headlice).

I wear it out to bed and I use a silk pillowcase which may or may not have helped but it certainly is divine to sleep on.

The colour is a lot warmer too.

Thanks - it's just the time of day that I took the shot and the lighting. My hair colour is natural and just looks totally different depending on what the lighting is at the time.

I just have to say that your hair, especially your ends, look amazing for a year without trims. I love your color and curls. Doesn't look like it needs a trim. If I were you I'd just keep doing s&d and keep growing. If you want to even it up first that's good as well. Do what makes you happy. :)

Maybe give it to a friend as a gift, and trim it yourself. Whenever you're ready for a trim (your ends look great, but you'd know better than we can tell based on one photo), you can use Feye's self-trimming article to get whatever hemline you want.

ETA: And your hair is totally gorgeous by the way, your curls are AMAZING!

pretty much what is your routine? lol

what products do you use?

condish?

OK, the only routine I have is that I wash every 3 - 4 days which consists of shampooing and conditioning and then running a leave in through my hair. In the latest photo you see I did scrunch my ends a little.

Shampoo - I use different things every time. I not very brand loyal and once I've used something for a little bit I get bored. The one product I really enjoyed using was Kevin Murphy Luxury Wash. I happily used that product right to the end and really liked it. Now I alternate between Natralia Nourish Dry Hair shampoo, Redken Fresh Curls Shampoo or Organic Care Shampoo. I am getting a build up from one of these products and I suspect it's the Redken.

Conditioner - matching to whatever shampoo I'm using. I really like Aldi Five Stars Conditioner too.

Leave-in - Giovanni Direct Leave in Conditioner

Oils - every now and again I use oils if I feel like it. I use them on my ends and sometimes on my scalp. I have jojoba, coconut, castor and a hair elixir from Perfect Potion.

Treatment - I try to do this once a week or at least once a fortnight. I will do either a coconut soak using lite coconut milk in dry hair, leave for an hour and then wash as normal, or an SMT using aloe gel, honey and aldi 5 stars conditioner, leave on for an hour after shampooing. Oh, and I just bought the Redken Fresh Curls treatment which I really do find good but I am convinced that something is coating my hair too much lately and it could be this product.

Drying - I always airdry. I work part time so this works well for me as I do have a couple of hours in the day when I can walk around with wet hair. Also I live in Australia so... I probably S & D once a week on average simply because I am addicted to it. Sometimes I wonder if I'm making it worse.

That's pretty much it. I wear my hair up probably every day at some point because I'm a mother of two kids and I have to get stuff done and don't like my hair down when I cook etc. I do however like to wear it down particularly on wash day.

My worst habit is that I'm always running my fingers through my hair which breaks up the curls and makes them frizzy. Then I just brush it, run a little oil over it and it's good to go again, only less curly.

What do you mean even it out? It looks lovely just as it is! The gentle U-shaped hem really suits you and if there are any uneven bits they are hidden by the curls.

I say just keep doing what you've done for the past year - it's evidently working!

Shucks - thanks!! :o I actually meant my layers. They are pretty uneven but they do blend well enough that it's not too noticeable. But yes, it does mostly look even to the naked eye. I'm just being overly critical.
