Faking a shorter ponytail:

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i299/physicschick/lhc/knotpony_back.jpg

Method:
Twist hair as though making a cinnabun, until it starts to coil onto itself. When it starts to form a loop, make sure the loop stays close to your head. Insert end of hair through loop to make a single knot. (Do this in the direction that will allow the tail to come out of the center of the knot like a ponytail.) Adjust knot so it's right next to your head and affix with hairtoy. I've used a flexi-8 here and probably also some hairscroos.

I've tried it once, and failed miserably :p My layers were poking out everywhere.

I didn't wear this on April Fool's day, but a few people thought I'd really cut my hair.

I do believe it is the monthly style April in honor of April Fool's. i.e. the fake bob... because it can fool those around you into thinking you made the BC.

I'm still trying to figure it out myself. XD

I think you must have to have very smooth hair to make this one work. Mine has way too much volume.

I remember doing the fake bob back when i had BSL hair or so...I don't think I could do it now...my hair is too thin to be able to hide the extra hair. lol

I have done that shorter pony thing...not to trick people, but just because I like wearing my hair in a ponytail or braid...but it's so long now that it gets in the way sometimes...

I've tried to do a fake bob, but it was all too obvious that therre was a big lump of hair hiding under my "hemline" at the back of my head. It just looked weird, and not at all attractive.
It may be that my hair is too long for this style! :blueeek: :sad

I used to fake a shorter ponytail all the time, especially during the summer. I'd start with a low pony and twist up to the point of a high pony and clip it. Then I'd spread the hair a bit to cover the clip. Worked great, but unfortunately the clip I used was stolen a couple years ago & I haven't replaced it yet. I just tried to do it, but none of my clips can encompass all of my hair this way. If I buy one before the end of the month I'll post a pic. :)

This was the fake bob I put out on Facebook last year. It made a few people on there cry. *Giggle*

Front (and there is my kitty in the photo... he died last June).

I didn't do one this year, since I knew no one would believe me and I didn't work or anything, so no one would see it.

If you want to know how to do it, I have a video on Youtube here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1IvsCdd9Gw).

Wow, I look awful with short hair. No wonder I keep it long! Ugh, ugh, ugh.

I could have done a better job with the back, but I already hated how I looked, so it didn't seem worth the effort

Here's a fake bob that I did last summer with spin pins. My hair was just approaching shoulder length and I basically tucked the nape area away and left the rest alone.

All my attempts are terrible...so I'll give it a go again later (when I'm also rid of the flu)

All my attempts are terrible, too :justy: and I don't have any good excuse like the flu.
Get well soon eresh! :flower:

I'm really starting to think this is another updo I won't be able to do at all :( . Gibson tuck and French twist and now this one. My technique how to secure the rolled up hair just does not work.
Using pins they never hold all my hair. Using a scarf holds the rolled up hair nicely - as long as it does not slide off my head... which it does after about a minute. Umpf.

I was able to do it when I had waistlength, but hadn't tried since.

Gibson tuck and french twist...not in my repertoire either :o

Thanks Little Orca. I had given up until I saw your ribbon idea.

It does remind me I don't like my hair short. Sure the lost weight feels great for a few days, but then there always comes the regret.

But this is so funny hair style for me, I can not even imagine to cut my hair in this lenght :misskim:

Here's a really cute video on how to do a fake bob.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRiUn89QC8I

Basically, you braid your hair, roll it inwards, then tuck and pin. i think the back could be a huge giveaway, but its very cute nonetheless. :D

My hair is hip length. I posted this on my Facebook and scared my step-daughters. They were horrified that I had cut my hair...LOL. It's a little messy but it worked for the intended purpose. I am now determined never to cut my hair this short...ever. I don't look good with short hair. :)

I braided the underpart of my hair first. Worked pretty well.

It's amazing how realistic it looks on everyone! Wow, how strange to see so many short hair pics!

Not really sure if this was the desired look I personally was looking for, but oh my gosh, this is a serious realization that I hate short hair, and I personally don't look good in it! Sorry the photos aren't that great.

I think my hair would be too thin for a fake bob, but I do the short ponytail thing a lot. Mostly super short to keep it out of the way, but sometimes I'll adjust it to shoulder length which looks cute with bun-curls. This pic is a couple years old, but I still look pretty much the same...

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=4191&pictureid=53805

ETA: I almost forgot! Back in middle school when I was growing out my layers, it got to a point where it was only 2 layers - the longest was APL and the shortest was at chin. One day I braided the long layer and left the short layer loose. So many people freaked out til they saw the back! lol

Those photos are lovely, this updo is my favourite.
I like real bobs too, but this updo lasts longer its place than real one. Unfortunately my own hair is now too long for this, the ends are quite impossible to keep in place/hidden.

This is a faux bob. My sister was thrilled! She thought I really cut my hair this short.

Here's what my hair looked like on April 1, 2010: http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/380048_10150403591437282_632327281_8774655_4073759 44_n.jpg

Here's what my April Fool's day prank looked like: http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/390603_10150403591422282_632327281_8774654_2102617 463_n.jpghttp://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/390180_10150403591467282_632327281_8774656_2057483 967_n.jpg

I put my hair in a ponytail on the extreme side of my head (by my ear) and pulled the ends over the top of my head, bobby-pinned it to stay up where I put it, making sure to keep the bobby pins out of sight, and arranged it so it looked like it had been styled. The ends of my hair went inextricably curly, but it made them look like there wasn't much weight pulling them down, which was fun.

The one problem was, when I published this one, everyone was really excited about the haircut (one person posted about it that she HOPED it wasn't an April Fool's prank! :patrol:), and half my acquaintances kept telling me for months afterwards that I should really do it. My best friend was the most persistant of the lot, and I'm still scared to sleep over at her place for fear she'll take matters into her own hands. :scared:

In another self-photoshoot (hooray for bathroom mirrors to show you what you're photographing!), I did a variation on the same theme where I drew up my hair in a bob length on one side of my head, pulled it over the top, secured it on the top of my head using a hairband, and let the ends hang in front of my ears on the other side (you can see the ends on the right of my face, my left).
That version is here: http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/377933_10150403620452282_632327281_8774852_4807614 16_n.jpg

You can only take photos from one side due to the nature of the 'do, but you can see the ENDS of the hair, which contributes to the reality. They're not styles you can wear out of the house, but they can be really convincing if you take the photo JUUUUST right. :D

I have a friend that does this style very well. She works her shorter curls to her advantage to make it look more realistic. Gets me every time.
