I'm finding splits at my roots??? What is this?
As far as I know, they are happening with the hairs from my small patch of coarse hairs at the top-back of my head, but they're still disturbing!
Why oh why can I never discover something pleasant about my hair for once? Grr...

That's pretty odd. Not sure what to do about that.

Do you take vitamins? I'm not sure either. Brushing too hard? Putting your hair up the same way all the time?

:( Do you mean split ends in very new hairs or white dots at the base of a long hair? Could it be from weather exposure, wearing a hat, how you sleep, car headrest, what hairtoys you use?

Freaky. Any chance of a photograph? It sounds like maybe friction- is it possible that something you are habitually doing- head rubbing on a pillow, head rest in the car, a hat- may be causing mechanical damage? Otherwise, no idea. Good luck.

Sorry, no photos as I do not have my own camera. Close to the root, I see these little bits sticking out of the hair shaft. My vision isn't too sharp and I wear glasses, so the closest thing I can liken them to is splits. I don't go out much and I don't subject my hair to mechanical handling, if they're not splits, what could they be?

An optical illusion?
I'm going to do a horrible job of explaining this, but I have some hairs that basically run alongside eachother until near the end, when one kicks off in a different direction. They look for all the world like a split end until you poke them. Could it be that happening with new hairs?

Sometimes I look at my hair and freak out a bit...and then I remember that I oiled it a bit too much and it's just dust sticking to the hair. Check again after a wash, I hope that's all it is!

Sticking out of the hair shaft? Sounds more like new hairs poking through, very close to longer, "older" hair, giving the illusion of splits, especially because the older hair is coarse, and the new, short ones are very fine.

Could it be lint? I've scared myself a few times by looking at my length and thinking I'm seeing splits, only to touch the 'split' and realize it's just a bit of lint (or cat hair, in my case). If you oil your hair, I've found it to be MUCH more attractive to little bits of stuff floating in the air/on your bed etc.
Have you washed your hair since finding them, and if so are they still there?
Hang in there, you'll figure it out :)

Come to think of it, this is wash day for me, and my scalp is where the greasies are the worst...I guess my hairanoia is getting the better of me again, good grief. Sorry for scaring everyone, I havn't slept since late last night.
