View Full Version : Hair Oil Effectiveness Poll 5

Nightshade
June 13th, 2008, 09:08 AM
I wanted to do a series of polls on some of the most common methods of hair care that have or have not worked for LHC. I think this may be both interesting and a good quick reference. Granted it does not take into account hair type, but that would require a separate poll for each, and that’s a bit more effort both to post and to sift through the information.

We will define “long-term” as a period of 6 months or more of continuously using the method you select to be able to vote for a good result. Please feel free to give the details of your methods, or the ones that worked versus failed in the thread.

:flowers: PLEASE only vote that something worked for you if you've used it for MORE than 6 months and DO NOT VOTE for methods you have not tried. If something has worked for less time, please comment about it in the thread, but do not vote :)

If you do not see your hair oil in this thread, please be sure that you've checked each oil Poll

Shea butter worked wonderfully on the ends and to smooth down the sproinging baby hairs.

I only used Shea butter in Fox's Shea Butter Conditioning Cream recipe. I thought it was brilliant but I've not used it directly on the hair. I've not voted on the shea butter.

You can vote for Fox's shea cream in this thread on Homemade Treatments :) (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=6740)

These polls make me feel like I haven't experimented with enough oils!!

Shea butter is probably the heaviest thing I use on my hair. The night before a wash, I will put some on my length and braid it. This is the closest I get to a heavy oil treatment. It does make my hair a bit greasy, so it needs to be washed out whereas coconut and jojoba oil don't seem to need to be washed out right away.

Shea butter is the thing my hair likes the most. Alone and mixed, pre wash and post wash.

My hair and shea butter don't get along. I have problems with it absorbing, I tried to use just a little but it clumped and went greasy on me.

I have a huge tub of it for soapmaking, so I tried it multiple times.

Love shea butter for when my hair is a bit more dry-feeling. It almost instantly makes my hair soft and shiny.

I use shea butter as leave in, 99% of the time on freshly washed hair, sometimes on dry hair.

I can use quite a lot of it (on wet hair) without it making my hair heavy. It makes my ends feel nice and soft.

Shea worked fine for me, but recently it's been getting a bit heavy. I use it in my hair butter mix which I use for deep oilings and light oilings. For the light oilings I'm trying coconut by itself and at the moment that's fine (I know, coconut wasn't part of this poll)

I put the butter mix in my quick version of the Sheabutter conditioning cream, and there the shea seems to be OK.

Shea butter worked well for me, but I ran out before 6 months, so I didn't vote.

Shea butter has worked well as a leave-in/styling aid. It's less oily than the others and give my hair some body.

My hair loves shea butter and coconut oil mixed together.

shea butter worked well for hair, I just don't like the smell or the texture.

DD uses it in a whipped concoction that I make. (similar to Physicschick's chocobutter, that's what I started with)

Out of all oils tried, Shea butter is my favorite, with Coconut Oil being the second.

I voted that jojoba, EVOO, coconut and shea worked for me. And they do each in there own way. If my hair need more moisture EVOO is the best, shea helps my hair feel better but it also makes it tangly so i need to use it with coconut. Coconut eradicates tangles, smells divine, but when i want my hair to loose some protein when i over did it - i don't use it. Also i use avocado oil which isn't listed. It is like a mix of EVOO and coconut oil, it reduces tangles and still feels thick and moisturing.
All the oils i use penetrate the hair proven with research, except jojoba. Jojoba helps my hair feel smooth and it also reduces some tangles and makes my hair shiney but i don't use it often because it is costly. But i find it works better with cones. I shake my oils up all the time, but my favourite is coconut.
I also infused my EVOO with herbs that strengthen hair in the effort that it will make my hair stronger- it is aromatic at the least :)
There is my 2 cents! :)

Shea butter is the best! has worked great! i love it, leaves my hair soft, shiny and protects my hair, specially the ends so well. the other oils i have not tried.

But i do recommend very highly the use of Shea Butter, alone or mixed with Aloe vera gel and almond oil. best mix i've tried.

I voted that Shea Butter didn't work for me. It leaves my hair in a glued-together mess, impossible to penetrate with comb or brush. :(

It works wonders on my skin, though! :D

I've tried a concoction where Shea is one ingredient in a blend, it seems promising, but I haven't yet tried it for 6 months, so I didn't make any vote to that extent.

That's exactly the same experience I had with shea butter. It didn't absorb well......and it was so difficult to wash out.

Hmm... though I've not tried any of these (yet) myself, I'm quite inspired to try shea butter now, given the results... ^_^

Shea butter works for me, but I haven't used it for 6 months, so no vote. It soaks in nicely, just like coconut oil.

Another vote here for shea butter. I use with a few drops of lavender EO on damp hair and it just soaks right in. I can use smaller amounts of it than any other leave in and still achieve the same results which I'm very happy about. It is easier on my wallet. I'm currently testing out shea butter from different parts of Africa so we will see how that turns out.

Can you change the poll result so that worked + not worked for each oil makes 100 %? It would be much easier to find which oil people like then.

Shea butter mixed with coconut, evening primrose oil and bpal's "Dorian"; is my favorite mix ever. It makes my hair look, feel, and smell divine :crush:! I also use it as a solid perfume. :) I love using shea butter by itslef as well. It's so creamy and makes my hair so soft. :p

I just discovered shea butter about a month ago and my hair loves it! I mixed it 1:1 with coconut oil and that's my everything lotion - hair, body, face.

Wow! Shea butter is way in the lead! I know a lot of ppl with my hair type love it, but it must be popular across the board. That's very interesting! :)

thanks for this thread! I see that lots of people with my hair type enjoy shea butter, which I haven't use on its own (on its own I mean 1:1 with another oil, I had always used it mixed with tons of other oils) I will have to try it :)
