View Full Version : Braiding with a parting

I'm not too fond of my hair being pulled straight back, I usually keep it in a side parting.

I'm finding it hard to dutch/french/fishtail braid with it in a parting though. Currently, I'm clipping the top half back and then braiding from there.

Example (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=7452&pictureid=98714).

So, does anyone have any tips?

There's a great French braid variation on Rapunzel's Resource (http://rapunzelsresource.wordpress.com/2010/07/21/french-braid-variation/) which leaves your parting in tact. There's also a vid of Torrin's, the Faux French Braid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kOyGD_KOoA), which allows for a parting too. :)

Hey! Well, you could try parting your hair to one side and then do an off-centered French braid....

Have you heard of Lilith Moon? She's on Facebook and does a lot of tutorials on YouTube. I just discovered her a few days ago, and she has some really good ideas on how to make French/Dutch braids that also frame your face or have a part; you might want to check her out.

Hope this helps!

Ooh, thanks for that Rapunzel's Resource link to the side-parted French braid variation, very timely as I just moved my part further to one side than it's been in quite a while. I can see that one going into frequent rotation! :D

Pepperminttea, thanks for the links-I had not seen them and can't wait to try.

Thanks to Vorvolaka for this thread, great ideas, I am awful at braiding!

Instead of having your braid go straight down your back, you could try having it go over your shoulder instead? That might look alright with a side part. Or clip a few hairs over your part?

I part my hair to braid as well....because I look hellish with my hair straight back! My way of combatting this is to do two braids instead of one:) It's also possible to braid down one side and pull it across for a single, asymmetric one.

Lace braids starting on each side of the part and becoming a single French braid in the back would be possible, yes?

I part my hair on the side, and if I just start at the crown of my head I still have a part. Or I start the braid on one side and go to the other.

Aha, thanks for the ideas folks.

I was clearly stuck in a rut as this never occurred to me!

I've tried this but it ends up in a bumpy patchy mess.

I part! My hair naturally falls into parting-zone, so I leave it. But lately the hair in the back goes back by itself, so it is half parted, and half not. I feel that parting gives more frame to the face. (:
