I'm still so grateful that my hair has finally decided to grow. For years it wouldn't grow, and had a big chunk in the back that was actually shrinking.

Here are some progress photos:

I think this was spring 2003. See the chunk missing on the right? I had gotten trims to make it all even and it kept shrinking up, breaking off, whatever. (The small picture on top is to show the proper colour of my hair). I think the growth problems were due to heavy stress I was under for many years.

February 2004, shortly after I left the abusive guy I was with for 18 years. I had gotten my hair cut at a beauty school. They took off way more than I wanted, but I was then starting with a clean slate of 17" hair.

Summer 2005 - me with my sweet man. My hair is finally growing!

A progress page I threw together a few years ago. On the bottom right, you can see how much they had to trim to get it somewhat even. The chunk broke off again over a few months. Was so frustrating!

And now, here's one from this past weekend:

Just got highlights and long layers put in. My hair is now 32" long, aiming to have more inches than years of life (I'm now 44).

Oh my gosh your hair is gorgeous! Great presentation too! I had no idea what to expect as I scrolled down. Wow. that really says a lot for de-stressing. I hope I look as good as you do at 44 (which will be in about 6 weeks' time LOL).

I like the bangs and highlights too.

Wow! Thank you all for the encouraging words! For years I've admired the progress pictures posted by people with lovely hair on this and other long-hair boards. Finally I can post a progress story of my own that has a happy ending (pardon the pun). :)

It was a bit of an obsession for me, to get my hair to grow. In fact, the very first online group I ever joined was LongHairLovers back in 2001 or so, and I wrote a story about my hair journey, which was so incomplete at that point but somehow it tied for first place with a member named Roni. (Anyone remember her? Is she around in this group by any chance?)

H i what dis you differently to grow your hair

I had tried everything from expensive salon products to rinsing with rain water and various wild herbs. I tried obeying the popular recommendation of hairdressers to get trims every six to eight weeks. I tried ignoring that recommendation and just letting it grow. I tried moisturizing with delicious smelling oils such as Monoi. I tried treatments with extra virgin olive oil, with mayonnaise, and with eggs. None of that seemed to help.

Two different hairdressers who had previously been baffled by the chunk of non-growth/breakage in the back of my hair but who had then witnessed the growth, and even NEW growth in my bangs becoming thicker, figured it had to be due to becoming free from the previous heavily stressed situation.

That makes sense to me chronologically. I first got together with the abusive ex when I was 18. Up till then my hair grew slowly, but that was probably due to getting perms from age 14 on. I had never had a chunk missing in the back.

Then by the time I was 20, my best friend was trimming my hair and commented on the chunk. That was my first awareness of it. From then on it was a frustrating battle of non-growth till I was in my mid 30s. I left the abuser when I was 36. A year or two later, I noticed the chunk wasn't a problem anymore.

So, Miss Legs (love your name, by the way!), really the only thing different is being free from abuse. Apparently stress can negatively affect hair growth in some people, as seems to have been the case for me.

Here's a link to my long story if anyone is interested to read more:

Truth be know, I dumped my head upsidedown while in the kitchen and loosely twisted my hair into a bun, securing with a velvet scrunchy. So easy, but so necessary lest I get hair in my face while working, eating, cooking, cleaning, etc. :eyebrows:

I know I'm taking a wild guess here, but did you use a backpack or a heavy purse on your right shoulder? I found out a couple years ago that my hair had a lot more splits on the right side precisely because of that.

I really like that last picture, you are very pretty and the highlights compliment your skintone and eyes beautifully :)
