(I've also put this in my blog, as a 'hard copy' as it were)

I’ve had a couple of requests to explain how I do my ribbon braiding, which is very colourful, a little heavy and always gets comments, so heres my method. You will need to be able to dutch braid.

You will need at least 1 ribbon, my hair is waist length and I use 2 meter ribbons. For this I used three:

Brush your hair out, braiding works best at least 2 days after washing so the hair isn't too slippery. It is the taughtness that will keep the ribbon in, so braid tightly.

Begin a dutch braid with large sections, taking the first ribbon and putting it underneath the first strand of hair.

Taking the next two sections on either side slip the ribbon into them.

Braid the right strand under the central strand, doing dutch braid, and keeping the ribbon with its original strand.

Bring the left braid under the central braid, again keeping the ribbon with its original strand.

Taking the right strand (that had no ribbon) we now add in ribbon 2 (pink) and hold it half in the right strand and the other half into one of the other strands that already has a blue ribbon, it doesn't matter which blue strand.

Gather hair to add to the right strand to prepare it for braiding.

Braid the right strand underneath the central strand, then gather hair form the left and braid the next strand underneath. you should have three strands, two with pink/blue ribbons in, and one with just blue.

We now add the third (purple) ribbon the same way we added the pink, adding it to the strand with only the blue ribbon in, and one of the others. Again it doesn't mater which.

If you've done big 'gatherings' like I have you should be nearing your nape, each strand should have some combination of ribbons in and you just keep braiding down the back, making sure to go underneath as opposed to over the top.

Using your fingers to feel for the ribbon try and maneuver it so the ribbon is on top of the strand, though allow hair to be shown as well.

Just keep braiding, my hair is waist length so after a while I had to take it over my shoulder to braid.

Keep braiding, keeping the ribbon on top.

When you run out of hair keep on braiding the ribbon

When you get to the end tie the ribbons off.

Start to make a bun (it was at this point I had camera issues, sorry!)

Pin it in place

It produces a awesome effect and bulks up plaits/braids substantially. I have lots of examples of ribbon braiding in my albums, and any questions please ask!

I just bought lots of coloured ribbons! Now I'm off to braid my hair. Thanks for the tutorial. I've been looking everywhere for beautiful ribbon braiding techniques but even youtube is lacking.

Maybe I'll have to invent some on my own, that is unless you have any other ideas?
