View Full Version : Micronesian Girl~ step-by-step picture instructions for "Senco" (spiral) braid

arc691
March 6th, 2011, 05:05 AM
Hi everybody!

Me and Sasani demonstrated the "Senco'' (spiral) braid for me this evening, so I could take pictures to post on the LHC for everyone who's been asking for instructions to this beautiful up-do. They are both so excited to have their pictures shared on this forum with so many others from around the world! So without further ado (no pun intended!), we present the step-by-step spiral braid:

Stage One:

First start with three little pieces of hair taken from the crown of her head:

Stage Two:

You will braid these in the lace braid fashion, gathering hair section by section in a spiral direction around your starting point:

Tuck the end in among the braid spirals:

Just one question - was her hair a little wet for this photo shoot or is it a couple of days after washing? I'm thinking I'll try this on the day before I intend to wash???

Her hair was kind of wet with coconut oil~ I imagine that would make it easier to handle and not so apt to tangle.

Way to go on trying it out yourself! :)

oooh thanks for sharing this - it's so amazingly beautiful!

I used to work with a girl from Micronesia, and she had the most beautiful hair. Her take on long hair was interesting though. She said that she was almost shocked when she first moved to the US how many women had "shorter" hair. It just wasn't done where she came from and she said that many women went their whole lives without cutting their hair at all. (I couldn't start to tell you exactly where she was from, and I know that's awful of me!)

Anywho - thank you for sharing!!

arc691, were you the braider? can you (or whoever the braider is) do this on yourself? it looks like one of those impossible-to-do-on-self styles, but I'd love to try it. maybe I'll jump my roommate... ;) I never liked the beehive because of all the pins but this would eliminate that completely. Pay attention, ballerinas, this could be your new go-to!!!

Aw, Kaeita, that's so cute! Thanks for sharing!

Boudica, it took Sasani a total of about ten minutes to do this braid, in fact it might have even been faster than that! I was so surprised! I haven't seen Me today so I'm not sure if she still has her hair braided this way or not; I've seen other girls leave it for a couple of days or so.

Milo - I was very suprised at how well it came out first go, but it really was quite easy to do. It took me about 15-20 mins.

Thank you! ::Blushing:: :o

I managed it first attempt quite easily. I think it is one of those things that look incredibly hard but are actually quite simple. I do have experience braiding though, i used to do weave extensions (unprofessionally:p) and this is very similar i suppose..

I found the end of the braid the hardest, since my mum only has shoulder length hair and i was running out of hair by the end! It is also layered so it was a job hiding the shorter parts of the hair within the braid.

I am tempted to try this on my hair now....

First attempt on myself. It took about 20 minutes; I started after my boyfriend left his work to come pick me up from mine, and he ended up having to sit in the parking lot for a few minutes waiting for me to finish. (Sorry, sweetie!! I apologized profusely. He liked the style, so that's good.)

Honestly, it's not THAT hard. The weirdest part is flipping the direction the braid is going in. It turns out I braid much more tightly going down on my head than going up, so I had those big loose bits you see on the bottom right there. Hopefully I can fix those in a later attempt.

Thank you, arc691 and Me and Sasani, for the picture tutorial!

I did the lace spiral on a friend the other night. We had one major issue:

Lots of layers.

The spiral came out great, but those little layers popped up all over the place! It looked decently done, all that aside. We agreed that, because of the rampant layer sprouting, it kind of felt like artificial turf. :D

Wow - that is probably the most beautiful updo I've ever seen! It's just gorgeous!

I'm going to get my mom to try it on my next time I'm at her house. I have a lot of very fine baby hair & layers too though, so we'll see how it turns out!

Wow! Just like everyone else, I simply cannot wait to try it. I wish I had someone to practice on, but I guess I will have to just try it on myself.

My biggest problem with a round-the-head kind of braid is that I get confused as to which move to make when I have to switch hands. If I had somewhere to hang a second mirror, that would probably help a lot.

Talk about a way to keep your hair up and out of your way for a couple of days, and the waves ought to be very cool

Oh, just lovely and done so perfectly!

I had to try on myself, and it has some obviously first-time, learner's issues, but a decent attempt, I think...

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?pictureid=106011&albumid=4802&dl=1308801962&thumb=2

Like a previous poster, I did the last round too low and loose, and my tail was so tiny, I didn't know what to do with it...will figure out how to work it into the style better. Also, I hate how it looks from the front, so will probably try to start the spiral farther back from my forehead and see if that helps the front.

It took about 20-25 minutes. Feels like it would hold for a week if I could sleep on it without getting fuzzy!

If you upload them to a free account at PhotoBucket, you can resize them right there on the screen, then PhotoBucket will give you the [ IMG ] codes to copy/paste into your posts here.

Otherwise, you can use a free photo-editing software like Paint.Net (http://www.getpaint.net/) to resize them and then reload them.

I did this style on my mom and it held beautifully. It's very easy to do on another person. Her hair is very layered though so there were a lot of spiky ends sticking out. Now if she would only return the favor...

Seems like a great hairstyle for people with shorter hair who like to wear wigs.

I think it will be really hard :p arc691 has hair about the same length as yours and she mentioned somewhere in this thread that she can't do it on herself because it will tangle too much. She has done awesome work with braids though so her skills are not to be blamed ;) I tried it on myself but it's hard with hip length hair, the bottom half of my hair kept tangling. However I found braiding my sister's hair to be a breeze and she was about an inch below shoulder

Wow! Thanks:) I wore a slumber cap that night and then kept it in the spiral for school/work the next day. It felt really weird when the wind blew on my head. I got several compliments and then some ladies wanted to touch it because they couldn't believe it was attached to my head. I was inspired by the lovely spiral and made an attempt:

http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff430/chahu/IMGP3336-1.jpg

It's not perfect, and i had to start from the outside and work in, leaving a tail that's been kinda twisted in and then tucked (you can see the hairband...).

The Senco is gorgeous! I wish i had those skills! I tried working middle out, but got caught up in my own hair...

Jaw dropped! Micronesian and Polynesian women have the most beautiful skin and hair, and the awesomest skincare/haircare methods and hairstyles. This was a treat for my eyes :crush:

Now that's a reason to be patient and let my hair grow long enough to be braided like that. Really stunning.

That is amazing. I bet it stays up for a couple of days at least? It must be very comfortable to wear with all the weight evenly distributed like that I imagine?

I had never thought that this may be possible to self-braid (though had been dreaming about one of those ever since my favorite kindergarten tacher did my hair up that way for my music school exam), but thanks so much to the inspiration of this thread and those of you who were brave enough to just go ahead and try it, i decided to give a try. And it's actually working!!!!!
Here's my second attempt, that i think more or less does look like a braid, though far from perfect. I think next time, with my fine-ish hair, i'll try adding strands every other crossng to maybe make the braid denser, but I'm sooooo proud and happy it's starting to work!

I've never been able to do a straight lace braid before but I think this actually came out pretty nice, even though it's messy.

Beautiful and so even!
I've tried this on myself but ouch my arms, ends and back did not like it!
No way it turned out so even as this or as olivelover's did! (I took big strands instead of small)

Great job!!

That braid looks so stunning on you, Sumidha! I don't think it looks messy at all, more like chic. I would experiment on the bigger strands if my hair was a bit thicker, I think I'll try that on my cousin next time she's here to visit.
Thanks, Eresh. ) I was actually surpirsed that it worked)
Arc691, it actually feels maybe even slightly easier than a crown braid upon some practice, Im sure you can master it =)

Thanks so much, i think with a little more practice this is going to end up being my go-to hair style for camping type activities where i was to be able to put my hair up for a week and forget about it. super comfy! :)

I've been thinking about that too. Though I will need to get used to it, as it's giving me pretty horrible scalp aches now. But that used to be the case with crown braids for me as well, and it's much better now.

I tried this on my sister's hair, and it was a total fail. She has fine, straight, waist length hair. The braid just didn't coil right. It all kept piling up on itself close to the center, and by the time I was done, we were joking with each other that it looked like a waffle cone bowl. I braided tightly, because I wanted it to be secure, but I really didn't think it was too tight. I'm not sure what exactly I did wrong.
I'd love to give it another go, but my sister, the complainer that she is, won't sit still long enough to let me tonight. I'll have to save it for another day. I'd just love to have a few tips to try to correct it for next time, so that I don't have to make her sit as long through my experiment.
