View Full Version : March 2011 - Trebleclef Bun / Equilibrium Bun

March 3rd, 2011, 08:58 AM

Yes, it's the 3rd already.
I'm sorry! :o
Next time somebody kick me/us (gently please ) if we forget to launch a new style of the month.

Have fun :flowers:

There are instructions and a link to a video here: http://www.forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=23. The pictures seem to be missing, but the video is clear.

How about a nudge? Kicking is mean :p

As a musician, and a big fan of equilibrium, I'm super excited to do this, even though I don't know if I have enough hair yet :( silly thick hair!

Let's start! Learning new hairstyles is fun, and so I took the challenge although my hair is too short probably. This bun is quite difficult at APL length indeed, but not impossible and looked very different each time I tried. I altered twisting directions and bun positions, and this is the variant that looks best. Unfortunately I can't hide my ends in the twisted hair. If I pull them in everything falls apart instantly, so I tucked them on the other side.

Nice to be able to do this, but it will be much better with two inch more. I'll keep practising :).

I have tried this so many times on my hair and my layers just fall out, so i'm not to sure how you managed it frost patten ;D

My hair is very tapered, so the double twisted hair is not too much, and I twisted it firmly and didn't pull the last inch of my ends in. In fact the twisted ends are wrapped only 1/2 times around the base :o. They're too short for more. I've been wearing the bun on the photo for 6 hours now, and it's still in place with the two pins only.

How about a nudge? Kicking is mean :pinktongue:
Oh  don't worry I'm quite sturdy, but a nudge will work, too I guess. You can nudge first and if I still forget you can kick, haha.

As for a quick picture tutorial, that's how I do mine...
The pics are kind of old, from when I started to grow out henna and hibiscus rinses, hence the strange lilac hue on the length.

It's a great updo and extremely versatile... i.e. it looks different every time
I think 1 out of 5 times I get something vaguely resembling a treble clef, the other 4 times it's Equilibrium something

Gather hair into a medium high ponytail and fold the length in half. holding the tips against the base of the ponytail with one hand and holding the upper loop with the other hand.

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?pictureid=38261&albumid=3030&dl=1299249761&thumb=1 (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=3030&pictureid=38261)
Twist up the length of the hair, keeping one finger in the loop. Don't loose the loop, you'll need it for the hair-stick later

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?pictureid=38262&albumid=3030&dl=1299249761&thumb=1 (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=3030&pictureid=38262)
As you twist more the strand will start to coil up into a bun.

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?pictureid=38263&albumid=3030&dl=1299249761&thumb=1 (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=3030&pictureid=38263)
Insert a hair-stick or a fork through the loop and maybe some more Amish pins or u-pins and you're done.

If your hair is not long enough to do one you can also do two.
Or depending on how it works out you can also leave some length unwrapped.

March 4th, 2011, 08:18 AM
Ooh, you leave the last loop twisted to get the treble clef effect... very cool! Mine looks more like a whole note.

I'm not great with this bun, because my hair wants to stick to itself and get all messy instead of sliding neatly into the twist, but it helps me some to do the twisting with a hairstick through the loop instead of my finger. :)

Oh I love the double-trebles! (Almost sounds like double trouble lol) I just wore my hair in double-chinese buns today, so I'll have to practice this one as well!

March 6th, 2011, 07:01 PM
Weeeeeeee! I did it! :cheese:

March 7th, 2011, 05:40 AM
Mine doesn't look much like a trebleclef, but it's the first time I've done it, so I guess I need more practice... ;)

March 7th, 2011, 04:18 PM
Here's my first attempt:

I think it turned out rather well.

March 7th, 2011, 07:50 PM
Wow this is a cool one, all your pictures look fabulous!

I'll have to try it later :D

March 8th, 2011, 01:15 PM
Here is my contribution for this month's style! It was another bun I haven't tried before. :D

March 8th, 2011, 02:31 PM
I hadn't tried this one before either - I didn't really understand it when I first looked it up, maybe because I didn't have enough hair yet? In any case, I've tried it twice now (no pictures yet, sorry) and I'm a fan! I did it once for sleeping, and it stayed all night. Then I took it out and redid it lower on my head to wear to work today, and again it's holding quite comfortably.

March 8th, 2011, 08:27 PM
I think my hair may be a bit short for this one....
I'll tackle it in the morning....

March 9th, 2011, 07:21 AM
I've never done this bun but it looks so sophisticated!

Tonight is washnight so I'll try it with my wet hair afterwards!

March 10th, 2011, 07:06 AM
I'm having trouble.....

Going to try yet again..

March 10th, 2011, 07:39 AM
Trebleclef bun...
Attempt 1:
http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/9934/poging1c.teh.jpg (http://img840.imageshack.us/i/poging1c.jpg/)

Attempt 2:
http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/2429/poging2c.th.jpg (http://img718.imageshack.us/i/poging2c.jpg/)

Attempt 3: with wet hair
http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/476/poging3enathaar.th.jpg (http://img717.imageshack.us/i/poging3nathaar.jpg/)

Today new attempts after looking at the instructions again.

Attempt 4: (looks more like it with that loop)
http://img828.imageshack.us/img828/2959/poging4.th.jpg (http://img828.imageshack.us/i/poging4.jpg/)

Attempt 5:
http://img846.imageshack.us/img846/1436/poging5a.th.jpg (http://img846.imageshack.us/i/poging5a.jpg/)

This bun is just not for me.
This is what happens after a few seconds:
http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/6531/poging5b.th.jpg (http://img819.imageshack.us/i/poging5b.jpg/)

It saggs...
Conclusion: Don't like this bun ;-)

March 10th, 2011, 08:16 AM
Eresh, your attempts all look amazing!

I have totally given up on this one. Unless I make it uncomfortably tight it disintegrates really quickly.

March 10th, 2011, 11:22 AM
My hair is too short/thick for this one. /cry

March 10th, 2011, 12:36 PM
Same here Idun....I will not be doing this one again, I guess my hair is too long to make it into a comfortable trebleclef bun.

March 10th, 2011, 12:40 PM
I tried several times, but my ends just pop out everywhere, all porcupine-like. :(

March 11th, 2011, 08:00 PM
Oooh! I have been wondering what to do about that loop I get half the time when attempting the equilibrium bun! Now I know it is supposed to make me look musical!

March 12th, 2011, 07:58 AM
Ahaha! Managed it!

Can't do the single, but can do doubles after a lot of practice!

This is so going to be my hairstyle at choir on Monday!:cheese: Pity I look a bit like a martian from the front...

March 12th, 2011, 11:02 AM
Here's mine:

March 14th, 2011, 04:14 PM
I just can't do this one maybe i am twisting the bun the wrong way.

March 14th, 2011, 05:25 PM
Ugh! This one continues to elude me!

I think me hair is definitely to short for this one...

March 14th, 2011, 10:13 PM
Sigh... my hair is too short and thick. :(
But I'm enjoying everyone's pictures immensely! :D

March 15th, 2011, 09:00 AM
I think i got it! will post pictures later.

Oh! it is almost the spring equinox/Ostara soon :) for us northern folks.

March 15th, 2011, 03:07 PM
here we go, try 1, will do better next time, think I will only do 2/3s my hair vs half

March 16th, 2011, 12:53 PM
So unfair, it'll take years till my hair is long enough to do that.

March 16th, 2011, 01:01 PM
I've been trying to view the equilibrium video on youtube and I see nothing...Am I the only one with this issue?

March 16th, 2011, 01:07 PM

I just watched it and it was fine, maybe you're missing a plugin?

March 18th, 2011, 02:04 PM
Just attempted this bun and think it may be a success... I'll try and remember to take pictures next time... when I've brushed my hair first and it looks prettier.

March 20th, 2011, 06:36 AM
I tried this, but I can't tell if it is right. It seems wrong to me. Anyone got any insight into what I can do to make it work better? Or, is it right and I'm just being too critical?

March 20th, 2011, 06:59 AM
This style looks so great but my hair isn't long enough to do it :(

March 21st, 2011, 12:42 PM

Right or wrong, it looks a lot like mine! (Still no photo, sorry)

I find myself thinking another alternate name could be the Embryo Bun - think of those early stage embryos that don't look much like what they're going to be, sort of a curve, with a bump at one end that eventually becomes the head.

March 22nd, 2011, 05:21 AM
Yay, I did it! (I tried this a while ago, but I needed to watch the video and it wasn't working for me...it's working now.) But, the ends of my layers are sticking out, so it's not so elegant looking. I may leave it up this way anyway. Wait, I had to use a chopstick because I didn't have a hair stick...maybe not.

March 22nd, 2011, 07:15 PM
I am still trying with this one. Sometimes I get it to work and it catches all the layered ends at the bottom.... and sometimes they spring out and elude the bun. I'm 80% there on getting this to work with one week left to master it for the monthly hairdo pic!!!

March 28th, 2011, 11:33 AM
....hi there everyone! I'm a new member and I've just discovered this challenge - since I have a passion for hairstyles I will surely contribute in the future....but I'm still practicing with buns - I'm much smarter with braids (also because my hair is too short!!)
Thank you for sharing your attempts - you are all simply amazing!!

March 28th, 2011, 08:16 PM
I need twice my current length to do it :(

These buns look very pretty and I love the double trebles, so cute :crush:

March 31st, 2011, 02:56 PM
I FINALLY got it on the last day of the month! Woo! Sorry if the pics are big.

March 31st, 2011, 09:34 PM
So I tried this bun at the beginning of the month and meant to get it down pat before posting. I completely forgot to try though. Anyway, here's my attempt from earlier in the month. It was the first try that actually didn't fall apart. :)

Close up but blurry

Shot where you can see my beautiful halo, lol

I've really gotta get better at taking these shots.

I love this style! I wish my hair were long enough to do this!

October 28th, 2011, 06:28 AM
Many months late, but I did this today, really easy and it held very well. Yay!
