What fun! I've been eyeing these for a while, and finally hoarded a Sally's coupon and got some. I just did my first set today, and it was really easy. I was impressed with how much hair the rollers hold: my hair is thick and coarse, and often overwhelms rollers. I only used about 12 large rollers, see:
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5294/5469838634_2cc413a8eb_m.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35906864@N05/5469838634/)

And I ended up with nice smooth waves:

Some of the ends are going off in funny directions, but not bad for a first try! I mostly wanted these to smooth and refresh my waves on non-wash days. I'd also like to try the smaller rollers to see if I can get a tighter curl for vintage looks. They seem very gentle.

Add your Caruso pictures and chat here, I know there are more LHC folks who enjoy these!

This is the set. (http://www.sallybeauty.com/steam-rollers/SBS-561030,default,pd.html?cm_vc=SEARCH) I had a 20% off coupon so they were about 30$. ETA: and it seems to be a comparatively good deal. The other sets of hot rollers at Sally's were 30-60$ for sets of 12-20 rollers; this set comes with 30 rollers.

Wahhh! I want these rollers so badly! I heard it makes the curl last for days. You have such a nice wave with a cute little curl at the end, so pretty! So lucky!

I did it this morning and boy oh boy I need to pay better attention to where I am putting the curlers! I just randomly stuck them here there and everywhere and it looked so wonky when I got done I ended up bunning it again lol. I think I will try again soon and use some sort of curler organization method that comes with the Caruso booklet. That and I will only finger comb.

I bought these a little while ago, but am having trouble making the curls stay in. It seems like as soon as I fingercomb after removing the rollers, the curls all fall out, and definitely wouldn't last for days! I have an event I want to do this for next week, so I really want to make it work. My hair is hennaed and I use a natural-ish leave-in conditioner on the ends and tried the day after washing. I left the rollers on the steamer until they were hot, but not dripping wet - do you find that it is necessary to leave them until they are really wet? Thanks for any tips :)

Well, you could experiment and try to leave some on to steam for say, 5 seconds, some for 8, some for 10 and some for 15 and see if any of them have longer staying power. I would also see if leaving them in to cool a little longer would help some. This crazy mess I did to my hair this morning doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

It wouldn't be so bad but the one side all the curls are going up and the other side they are all going down so it looks like my hair is 6 inches shorter on the one side.

Thanks Nae, I'm sure you'll do much better next time! It always looks so easy when you see other people use curlers, I hadn't even really thought about curler arrangement!

I have tried varying lengths of time on the steamer, I was just cautious to steam them for too long because I have fine hair and so according to the instructions they shouldn't be left on too long. I think I am overly cautious though as they don't really get hot enough to damage hair! I'll try longer next time :)

I've found that the key is really letting them cool on my head. I've taken a hairdryer on cold and run that over the rollers to cool them down faster.
But tbh, I'm like you firebird, curls have never stayed in my hair for days. These do work nicely, I just can't keep that lovely volume that I start out with.

Yes, try longer. I steam mine a looong time, not sure how long but they were definitely damp. But like you say, they don't get very hot anyway, so I don't think there's much danger.

And like darklion said, make sure to let them cool/dry all the way; I probably left them on my head about half an hour, not the 10-15 minutes they suggest.

The wavy part lasted for several days for me, the curls at the ends were gone the next day. But my hair is wavy anyway, so it's not hard to get it to take a wave pattern! I doubt it would last as long for you naturally smooth and sleek types.

I have a question about these rollers. I have a natural curl to my hair, but I want to try out a voluminous wavy style instead. Are rollers the answer? If so, I know that caruso rollers do best on dry hair. So does it work on you 2b-2c types when it's all big and poofy after drying, or do you need smoothed out hair first?

So I got some. I had a return to make to Sally's anyway, a coupon, and some extra money, so I got a Caruso set.

I've lost a lot of my natural texture to damage (I'd say that I might be a 2c/3a now...maybe? I don't know. I either braid it or bun in damp all the time now, so I don't actually see my natural texture that often. I'm wanting big waves, so this seemed the best way to get them. I'll post pictures of my hair-ventures.

The claim that curl lasts for days is bogus. But I do get great curl that lasts the day, with Caruso rollers.

If you over steam your rollers and let them get wet they won't work properly. Your roller should be thoroughly infused with steam, very warm but not so hot that they would burn or scald your skin. These rollers work by infusing warm steam into your hair then sets the curl by evaporation of the steam, not by getting it wet. If you let the roller get wet, it will get your hair wet and it won't curl your hair.

How tight did you roll your hair? The tighter you roll it, the tighter and longer lasting your curl will be. Leaving your rollers in for a while also helps. Although I get a decent curl after ten minutes or so, if I leave my hair up longer, I get even better curl. You might want to try rolling tighter and leaving your rollers in longer. Make sure your hair is completely dry and doesn't have too much product in it.

Caruso rollers take a little getting used to and you might need to use them a few times to get the hang of them and get them to work best for your own hair.

I have used Caruso rollers since 1989. I love them and wouldn't use anything else to curl my hair. :D

:soapbox:

I declare the lot of you a bunch on enablers.
[/soapbox]

I love these rollers. I washed my hair, put in my regular leave-in and bit of oil, and dried it with the blowdryer on cool. It was big, frizzy, almost crimpy looking (which is normal when I dry it like that).

I then put them in my hair like this (http://www.style-hair-magazine.com/image-files/hot-rollers.jpg). That is, the roller "mohawk" in the middle with the side rollers horizontal. The exception was that like in the picture, I took the sections near my face and rolled them AWAY from my face (such that they were vertical).

I didn't take pictures of the result, though. BUT! I did record a video for my fragrance-based youtube channel wearing the hairstyle. At first, I didn't like it because I thought it was WAAYYYY too big. But, it relaxed and started looking really tousled and sexy.

I'm not going to link the video here because I accidentally let a swear word slip in the video, so I don't want to offend anyone's sensibilities. PM me and I'll send you the link! :)

Roseate, your waves look amazing!
I really love the type of loose waves everyone seems to get from these!

I have been eyeing the Caruso for a few months now, but didn't get them yet because

1.) I has been a long time since I have seen my hair in curls/waves and I am not sure how it will look now. Is there any curling method which will give me similar results as the big Caruso rollers? Just to try out the look.

2.) I am not from the USA so I would have to get a set from an European seller.
The picture quality is bad, but to me it seems like there aren't enough roller holders included: click (http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd415/xpress-clearance/CARUSO1.jpg?t=1286832438)
Will hair clamps (like in curlytm's pic above my post) work as a substitute or are they roller holders essential for the technique to work?

curlytm

They come with their own roller holders. I just posted that picture to show the "pattern" of the rollers in my hair.

Thank you, I did understand that, it just seemed like the set I was eyeing on ebay didn't include any roller holders because the seller mentioned he included some roller holders for free (which to me would be the things you can see in the bottom left) - only two for each size, but not if any roller holders for the rollers would be included :silly:. I have had some bad experiences on ebay with unclear description... anyway, I have found a seller with much better feedback...now if I could bring myself to click the buy it now button :D:rolleyes:.

I just got these rollers and sadly my hair didn't curl :( I love the way other people's hair looks with Caruso curls and I hope to figure out what I am doing wrong.
I used 18 rollers and steamed each one for about 5-8 seconds and left the rollers on for about 30 minutes. Next time I plan to try leaving them in my hair for a longer amount of time. I saw Roseate used 12 rollers, how many rollers do other people use? I'm wondering if I should be using more than 18 rollers. Thanks!

Here is a link to the thread I started quite a while ago about my Caruso. Pics included.
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=52864

The curls do last days for me, I usually use the largest rollers though. If I used the smaller ones I can have curls for 4 days but my hair starts out too big for my liking.

You really don't want to saturate your rollers, they will take forever to dry and the curls will tend to be frizzy. It takes some practice to figure out what works for your hair, everyone is different. I have a friend with a Caruso and she swore it didn't work for her hair, it looked awful every time she did it. We were going to a party one night so I wrapped her hair in them and it looked amazing. You just have to practice :)

Your curls are beautiful. I have Hot N' Steamy kind of like the knock off but it does the same thing. The waves do not frizz like hot rollers would. It just takes so darn long to set. I have small rollers though.

I can have my Caruso rollers in my hair in under 10 minutes. I use anywhere from 12 to 18 rollers depending on the look I am going for. I let them cool down for 20 minutes, so 30 minutes in all for me.

I went back and read the other Caruso thread that UltraBella linked to. If anyone is having trouble with these rollers, I recommend reading it! However, I still did not get the beautiful waves that others have had. I used 18 rollers and left them in for 4hrs. The ends look nice and it did slightly soften the braid-like waves that my hair normally has. I will keep practicing, since I think I still might be too slow in the rolling (allowing the roller to cool too much). If I get better result I'll post it :)

Bought these about a week ago. The first time I tried them the curls did not come out great. I let the curlers steam for about +10 seconds, rolled them from the tip of my hair, and left them on for probably about an hour. So the next time, and after having read more information in this thread, I let the curlers steam for about 5-6 seconds, rolled them into my hair the same way I usually do with a curling iron- near the base of the hair and then wrapping the tail in a swirl around the curler, and I started taking them out as soon as I finished putting them all in my hair. Came out much better. I may need a bit more tweaking to get it to come out perfect, but I'm on the right track now. :)

I hate quitting on things but I'm really giving up on these rollers. They put a half hearted wave in my hair which falls out within the hour. I've tried steaming for 1 second and one minute, and everything in between, I've even left them in for 2 hours before - no avail. Oh well, on to the next one :D

I was wondering if anyone who uses these has ever used normal hot rollers before?

how do the results compair?

I use remington jumbo rollers at the moment and I love the result, but it would be nice to get the same result with less potential damage, but i dont want to spend alot of money on somthing that isn't anywhere near as good.

Also how large is the "jumbo" size roller in the caruso?

I am selling my Caruso steam rollers on the swap board in case anyone is interested! I really loved the results when my routine was cone-free, but lately I have been using cones and a blow dryer (I know...I know...don't throw anything at me! lol :) ). Cones will prevent the steam from doing its job, so I don't have much opportunity to use them any more.

I curl my hair with these a few times a week. I love them! I just use a little Nightblooming Panacea (summer version) and maybe a tiny bit of coney serum before setting my hair. I actually do use cones, both my shampoo and conditioner have them. I've tried using these curlers with a cone-free routine and if anything I've found I get better results with my coney products. I'm not sure why. It may be because I highlight and my hair just does better with cones than without.

I think it just depends on your hair, if the steam rollers will work better with or without cones. But I love my set and the results I get with them. Since I've replaced my blow dryer and flat iron with these steam rollers the condition of my hair has improved so much. I'm so happy I gave them a try.

Just my experience:)

Hey, hang on. That doesn't look stupid. A little (what's the word)... unorganized maybe in curling it evenly, but that's about it. You'll get the hang of it the more you use the system! Honestly, you'll get better at this on your own! Just a matter of practice.

Your curls don't look stupid, at all. In fact, they are great. They just need a little finishing. Have you tried gently separating them with your fingers and fluffing your hair a little at the roots? Curls usually look best of you do a little something with them, rather than just leaving them as they come off the rollers. :D

That's what I thought too.

Annibelle, my curls look like yours do in your picture right after I unroll them (only a much shorter length lol). I then fingercomb them and fluff them a bit. I may even comb through the curls once with a wide tooth comb to make them softer. I will also comb my roots to smooth out the separated look from the rollers.

For me, they took a few tries to figure them out. I think if you gave them a few more tries (and experiment with different ways of rolling your hair on the rollers) you would get gorgeous results. Your hair is beautiful, btw:)

I think it ships to most of europe. It arrived for me just fine, though I don't remember how long it took to deliver.

Thanks for this :)

i have never used these so take with a grain of salt but with any heat set curl start with dry hair, let cool in rollers, once unrolled dont touch it! even once cool they need to sit for a minute before you finger comb. my hair doesnt take curl well and when i used to use heat this was the key for me. doesnt last as long as bun or pin curls do but good enough. also if you use some kind of hair spray do it right after finger combing each section then bounce curls from the bottom before it dries. good luck!

Natalia, the difference with Caruso rollers from traditional hot rollers or curling irons or wands is that they don't curl with heat. They infuse warm steam into your hair, then the hair "cools" drys and sets around the roller, forming the curl. While the steam that goes into the roller is, of course hot, by the time you lift the roller off the steamer and wrap your hair, the roller has cooled to the temperature of a warm face cloth. When you take your hair down out of these rollers, it is cool and the curl is set. There is no need to let the hair cool or the curl to adapt. :)

I think these are going on my Christmas list!

Now I'd best start actually being good, in case Santa is watching!

I adore the Caruso! I want to thank UltraBella a thousand times for mentioning them here. I just need to buy some more rollers in the medium and large sizes. The set I bought came with plenty of rollers, but not enough in each size.

For those who don't consider it sacrilege, here's a tip: After you take down the rollers, don't shake out the curls. First, blow dry using a ceramic drier with a diffuser attachment held away from your head (not scrunching) on medium or low heat. This will guarantee your curls don't fall out or frizz, and it doesn't expose your hair to any more heat than you would get on a summer afternoon. The diffuser attachment spreads out the air, allowing it to cool before it touches your curls, and it also "softens" the air stream, so the wind doesn't muss up the hair. I'm a frizz-bomb, and I absolutely swear by this technique.
