View Full Version : The Seashell Bun! :)

LoversLullaby
February 19th, 2011, 03:40 PM
So I was just playing around with my hair, and I think I just invented a bun! It looks a lot to me like a seashell, hence the name. I have about 24" of hair, and I've never tried it but it might work for longer hair if you use your entire hand instead of two fingers.

1. Make a mid-high ponytail. Do not secure.
http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww328/PoeticEssence/002-8-1.jpg

2. Coil your hair up (it doesn’t have to be coiled all the way to the ends)
http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww328/PoeticEssence/003-15-1-1.jpg

3. Take two fingers from your right hand and put them underneath your long coil (shown in above picture also)

4. Take the coil and wrap it behind your fingers
http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww328/PoeticEssence/004-10-1.jpg

5. Wrap again, but this time wrap your hair around just your index finger
http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww328/PoeticEssence/005-9-1-1.jpg

6. Flip to the left and slide your fingers out slowly
http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww328/PoeticEssence/006-8-1.jpg

7. If your tail sticks out, tuck it underneath the top right side of the bun. Insert your hair stick beginning at the top right, catch hair in the middle, and poke out of the left side coil.

Voila! Beautiful seashell bun! :)

Tips:
~This bun is much more secure if you wear it with two sticks. I like to put mine in an X shape
~For longer hair, this bun works if you first wrap it around 4 fingers, and then wrap it between 2 fingers instead of the 2 and then the 1
~Weaving your hair sticks through the bun helps secure it too
~This bun can also be secured with hair pins, Amish pins, spin pins or hair screws, claw clips, beak clips, and Ficcares. Sticks are my personal favorite way to secure it though. However, if the sticks don't work for you, you can try a number of different ways to secure it

That's really pretty! I won't be able to make it, and I can't think of a variation. I might try tomorrow anyway.

You have very lovely nape too. I know how weird that sounds but my scruffy, low nape ruins even the neatest buns. Yours is all neat and symmetrical.

since my hair is longer I used several fingers during the wrapping to get an inward spiral. it worked! I secured the bun with amish pins, it held really well. I need a bit more practice but I really like this bun, thank you for sharing!

The Amish pins work great, but a fork or stick just will not hold this bun for me. Juneii, are you using 3 fingers, and do you wrap the last finger several times? Your hair is so thick that it's not likely you've needed to think about the same problems I'm having.

On me, a cinnamon bun is big in the middle, whereas this bun is big on one side, which kind-of makes the low side of this bun flat against my head. It's so flat on one side that it doesn't look like a seashell.

I guess this is because my hair is thin and it tapers. Perhaps I need to tighten the twist of the coil, but my hair is not cooperating.

When I make a cinnamon bun, the tail is hidden underneath, which somewhat pumps-up the bun. LoversLullaby didn't mention exactly what she does with the tail-end. I wonder if there is a way to pump-up the low side of this bun with the tail?

I tuck the tail underneath the right side of the bun (the right side if you were looking at the picture), sometimes it goes there automatically and sometimes I need to tuck it there.

I've never really wrote directions for something like this before but I'll go add it in. Thanks for reminding me! :)

I just tried it, it's indeed very quick and simple and rather well holding so far! I had 7 hairpins to fix it. Hairstick is out of question, it won't hold it on me. Pity :(
I don't think it will survive a workout or such but then I think it's supposed to be an elegant refined updo for quiet non-sweating ladies :D will be great for dining out!

No problem!! :) I'm wearing this today with a beak clip and it's holding REALLY well.

I had to pin it all around else it either slops or puffs and sticks out at the coil's bigger side... But then I never have luck with only one clip to hold any of my buns. I guess it's just my hair.
I definitely need to tweak with this, though, it's my first attempt :)

ETA I think it must look fabulous on hair with high/low lights, it will be like a real seashell. Thinking of doing it with a ribbon for that effect sometime.

yes on the last finger I wrapped the last few inches of my hair that tapers the most over each other to get a little bit more thickness.
agh, I wake up to forget how I did it exactly @__@

It flopped on me too when I was holding the strand with the wrong hand. If you flip it to the left you take the end or the coil with your left hand firmly and then flip the loop over it and secure. It worked for me and I am bun-challenged at my current length :) HTH!

I'm not sure if you have any around, but when I can't find a hairstick, I use a paintbrush! (The thin artists' kind.) It works well (as long as the metal part doesn't get into your hair) and makes you look very artistic. ;)

I tried this today and I love it! Looks kind of dramatic and feels very secure. Before bunning I had fed my hair with a mixture of conditioner, avocado oil, rose otto EO and oat protein, so I think the feel and look is a bit different than if I'd done it with non-fed hair (sorry for the weird terms guys...). Will try this again tomorrow with freshly washed hair, thanks so much for this :flower:

Oh, wow! I wore this today with two hairsticks, and it was so secure and very pretty! I have BSL thick hair so I often wish for more updo options - this came at just the right time! I was getting bored of my infinity/chinese/cinnabun trio. I occasionally french braid for variety, but that takes time in the morning and, well, exams.

This is a lovely looking bun. Now all I need is some good pins. All I have are bobby pins and those so do not work for most buns on here. I did it with a set of sticks, but it would definitely look better with pins. Thank you for inventing this and sharing. Here it is in my hair. I did 4, 2, 1.

This is super exciting, because I'm getting so bored with my hair. Prior to this one, I couldn't really get any updos I tried to work. My grown out, shoulder length bangs completely ruin everything. So the only things I've been able to do is throw it up in a half-thru ponytail (I prefer that to a regular ponytail so it's up and off my neck), and throwing it into a claw clip.

It took me a few tries, but I think I got it! Woohoo! But how do I get hairsticks to hold it? It's very loose in my hair, even if I coil it tight, and I suck with hairsticks anyway. I havn't figured out that magic trick to making them secure yet. But as loose as this one is, I have no clue how to go about doing hairsticks with it.

Please help! :D

I always coil my hair really tight for this to work. Plus, the only way I can get it to hold with sticks is if I insert them in an X shape and weave them through the bun. Hope this helps. Hair sticks DEFINITELY have a learning curve. :)

I've tried it, but it didn't hold:(. I have too many layers, and they are too short for anything. The only bun I can do right now is the cinnabun with a stick. Oh, how slowly my hair grows...:( Nevertheless, your bun looks beautiful, I will try doing it in a couple of months.:)

LoversLullaby, thank you for the great updo idea! It's easy, it looks lovely and it's perfect for summer because it keeps my hair off my neck...

On the left, with my hair braided insteadly ot twisted; on the right, with my hair twisted, held with a hair-stick and a hidden pin:

i agree! i was thinking of some little bobby pins with seashells, starfish and things on them (since I have bangs grown out past chin that i have to pin back...)

Sooo pretteh! I am a bun virgin (and totally thumb-fingered to boot), but maybe I can pull this off after a few more month's growth. Congratulations on your invention!

Here is my very first go - it worked!! I really love it and I'll be using it as a staple I think. Works well with my new hairstick that I haven't worn as yet.

Super comfy, easy to do and my hair is just past waist so it works fine - I just have an extra little bump in the middle or something. Thanks for posting - your instructions were great for visual learners like me.

Give somebody a chance to post. You made those two posts two minutes apart. There is another thread bringing up this same subject. You can find the thread right here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=81947).

Thank you very much for your answer and I'm very sorry for posting two times. It was an accident, but I couldn't find where to delete the other extra post (maybe I don't have the option yet as I'm quite new?) unfortunately I had no other option than to leave it here. If there's an admin reading this, please delete the other post.

I thought you was doing like what I saw somebody else doing the other day. The person posted the topic then like five minutes later was posting again asking if anybody was there. I was thinking give somebody time to answer. I see now that you just run into a computer problem.

LoversLullaby, thanks for the new style :flowers:

I'm sure you've heard the phrase, "Horses sweat, and men perspire, but ladies only glow." :)

I've done a little tweaking on the seashell, because my hair was already in two braids for the day when I saw this (I bobby-pinned myself into a fake crown braid today!) and because I didn't want to take the time to un-braid, yet wanted to immediately try the style, I experimented. Twisting the two braids together and then sea-shelling it looked cool, but felt too insecure without my hairsticks (too lazy to go find 'em. I've had one of those days) so now I'm just bopping around with two braided seashells, one on either side of my head just behind my ears. Used 4 bobby pins each, one for each cardinal direction (as I usually think about it) but you'll probably want more pins if you intend to do anything more strenuous than pulling an all-nighter writing an essay, as I'm spending MY time this evening.;)

Braided version is very interesting, I must try it though I'm not sure if my length is enough for it.
BTW I did the Loverslullaby's bun for some formal occasions and it is just great! Looks sophisticated without much effort.

I am really liking this bun. I have hip length hair. What I do is put my hair in a pony tail with a scrunchie, then wrap it around 3 fingers, 2 fingers, then around 1 finger, bring it to the side & put in a faccare. Stays really good & gives nice bun waves when I take it down.
Thank you for telling about this bun!

I like this bun, also. I also have hip length hair. Thank you for the tip on making it work better. I guess I was afraid a Ficcare would cover up too much of the bun. It would hold, though.

You kinda "sew" the stick into your bun using the scalp hair underneath it. I just got the hang of it yesterday. :cheese:

I love, love, LOVE this bun. Thank you so much. I have been wearing it a lot since you first posted. One of my patients started calling me "the Vogue Lady" because of it. It is quite elegant paired with a french roll. I have also put it on the low side, behind my ear, in the middle of a french braid start, and I put it on the very top of my head for sleeping (after moistening bottom third of my hair with water and conditioner) and it gives the lovliest bun curls.

For 2 months now I have been practicing this bun, but I just can't do it nicely! I can't seem to hold it in place. I've tried hairsticks and then amish pins. It remains too loose and just slides down after a while. What am I doing wrong? I couldn't figure that out yet. But I guess a few people also have trouble holding the bun. I love the way the seashell bun looks, and I just wish I got it to work on my hair. :(
