Hi guys!!

Edit: Here is the link for the video version, if the pictures don't work for you! Enjoy!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGaTcuEEZdw

This is very similar to a dutch crown, except it imitates Yulia Tymoshenko's famous crown braid. My hair is waist length at the longest layer but much shorter everywhere else. Although her hair could very well be extensions, I don't think it needs to be! Here's my very rough tutorial on how to get the Yulia look with shorter hair.

(It's similar to a dutch crown braid, but easier, I think!)

(starting hair length)
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i373/Arya-Stark/Photo538.jpg

1. I combed my hair into a deep part, then took a rattail brush and and separated out a two centimetre thick halo around my head where I planned on placing the braid.

http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i373/Arya-Stark/Photo536.jpg

2.I 'ponytailed' these and let them dangle free. I shall call them 'halo ponytails' while they're still in bunches.

http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i373/Arya-Stark/Photo531.jpg

3. I then took the hair from my crown, and anchored it to a small piece of hair from the nape of my neck, and tied these together at the nape of my neck. Let's call it the 'crown ponytail' (This will became the middle strand of the braid.)

http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i373/Arya-Stark/Photo534.jpg

4. I then swept the hair from in front of the 'halo' behind and underneath the halo ponytails. Be careful to leave the 'halo' ponytails free!

http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i373/Arya-Stark/Photo532.jpg

5. Now I have three sections in the back. We will use these to make the braid. I use the 'crown ponytail' as the middle section, and the two side sections (careful not to use the halo ponytails! They must remain free!)

http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i373/Arya-Stark/Photo533.jpg

6. I pulled the three back sections over my right shoulder did two 'bumps' of an english braid, then held in one hand. combed out the 'halo' ponytail on the right side with my free hand.
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i373/Arya-Stark/Photo530.jpg

7. I separated out one piece and added it to the big braid, keeping it tight to my head.

http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i373/Arya-Stark/Photo527.jpg

8. I proceeded to braid the hair my hair around my head, adding a piece from the halo at every bump. This anchors the hair to your head and minimizes taper.

9. I got to my left ear, and added the last 'halo' piece to the braid.

http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i373/Arya-Stark/Photo523.jpg

I then proceeded to make an english braid. I had enough english braid from my left ear to wrap it around my head and pin it at the top of my head, under the crown braid.
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i373/Arya-Stark/Photo520.jpg
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i373/Arya-Stark/Photo519.jpg

10. used a comb to make the front neater.

I'm sure it can be done better with wet hair and mousse and more skilled hands! I think if I didn't have bangs, and I positioned my braid sideways like hers, it would be a little thicker. Sorry for the large pictures, this is my second time posting pictures, and my first tutorial. I'm obviously not very good. I hope you enjoyed, though!

Yay! Thanks for the comments! I'm glad you like it. Idid a better job right after this. I wet my hair and it looks much better. I went out for the night and it held like a rock. I got a lot of looks tonight too. I'll post them tomorrow. But I want to see other people's versions, so please try it out and post them. ^__^

Haha, well people were saying you needed blunt hip/classic length to do it, and some of my layers barely reach my chin!! You should try it on your hair, I don't think it needs the length to work! Like you can see, once I wrapped my hair around my head, I had enough english braid left over to go 3/4 around my head again and pin at the top. If your hair is APL it should still be long enough to tuck under the bottom of the braid. It might work even better if you have less layers than I. The extra length I have didn't really help me, I don't think!

Thanks guys! Glad you liked it. I actually have better pictures of when I redid it later...should I swap out the finished pictures so you can see how it looks once you have a little practice? It looks way better the second time, but I'm not sure if it's okay to edit previous posts like that!

This looks great. Thanks for all the pictures that make it so easy to follow! Going to have to try this soon. Though my fringe growing out makes crown braiding a trifle annoying. If I manage anything non-hideous I'll post a picture.

I wonder if the super long haired could just pull the English braid through the start of the crown brain and have it hang loose as a braid or a pony. Alas my hair isn't long enough to try that yet but I bet it could look spectacular.

February 19th, 2011, 01:54 PM
I have seen photos where Yulia had shorter enough hair that I wondered how she managed a full crown braid. She have done something similar to what you have done here. I am still not quite understanding what is going on in the back, so if anyone else figures this out and can post more details, I will be keeping an eye on this thread. One of my hair goals, actually my main hair goal at this point, is a crown braid like this. Then I will be happy!

ETA: It isn't the OP's instructions, I just don't have the ability to picture things in my head very well. I have to see it to understand it!

You've made me want to try, so I've spent the last two hours of my life braiding... The result is nowhere near yours nor Tymoshenko's, but anyway: you've made me discover a new way to do crown braids that I can actually manage! I couldn't be happier!

So, thank you!

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=5085&pictureid=96707

I don't know if I've followed correctly all your instructions, I had a specially hard time figuring out where did two of the three initial strands come from (front hair, nuh?), but I think I managed something similar... isn't it so?

Wow, I really love your version!! It makes a beautiful braided ring around the back of your head!! I'm honoured someone liked my hairstyle enough to actually try it out and post the results (*^_^*)
I think the only difference is that the 'halo' hair I grabbed is a little farther forward on my head.

It looks really similar, but here, I highlighted some of my pictures to maybe better illustrate what parts of my hair I'm using for what.

http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i373/Arya-Stark/hair1-1.jpg
H is for 'halo' hair
L becomes the Left strand of the main braid
M becomes the Middle strand of the braid
R becomes the Right strand of the braid
http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i373/Arya-Stark/hair3.jpg
So I hope those help you see where I gathered the hair from

And here are more pictures of when I redid it and made mine look more Tymo-esque!

I always loved Yulia's braids. I always thought she was stylish. I've wanted to wait until my hair was longer to do something like Irene Dunne's hair (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_RW0mroCesfk/TT3jJmtQmcI/AAAAAAAAAvM/YcIZ314mzR0/s1600/I+remember+mama+1.jpg)in "I Remember Mama" which I remember from one scene is basically two braided pigtails at the back of her neck that gets wrapped around her crown. I think this is a great tutorial! I don't have to wait.

Wow! It's amazingly clever, and you are too cute for words :)

I had always assumed Tymoshenko's hair was fake. The Ukraininans and Russians always mutter about her hair being as fake as she is, and her Lesya Ukrainka aspirations... But now I am beginning to think I was unfair to her! I learn something new every day.

You could possibly thicken out the braid by making the halo hair on that side a bit thicker, especially towards the parting rather than behind your ear end? So as your layers "run out" you can add more from the halo side and it should even out the thickness. Hope that makes sense.

Arya, you are a genius! I've been trying this since you posted it, and the technique works perfectly, though my results aren't perfect yet lol. My hair is only an inch longer than APL, so what happens is that the braid only keeps its thickness until just past the first ear; after that I am braiding the 'halo' hair only so it gets thin really quickly. I probably also need to adjust the relative size of the sections. Plus my braiding skills have not been helped by a run in with a new conditioner that smells fab but has left my hair very tangly. :(

But I thought you might like to know that the technique works fine in theory even on just past APL hair. I can see this working extremely well in a few inches time!!! :)

Yeah, I should try that too.

My attempt today was a bit rubbish, my hands were not cooperating and half of my braid tapered so much it was like a mini-itsy-bitsy-wittle-tiny strand, which looked, frankly pathetic.

In the end I just did two english braids, crossed them over and stuck them to my head lol

Mm, I thought this might work too, but then it looks like a bizarre cornrow, and you can see the part on both sides! And if I pick the halo hair up too far back, I get an odd part there too XD. It certainly is a finickey style!

As to her hair though..I get the feeling her hair in that specific picture are extensions. That is tailbone length hair, and just a few years ago she had APL layered hair. Now, I grew my hair out from APL layered to waist layered in two years, but seeing as she also dyes it platinum blonde...I think it would take about 5 years to get it to that length. If anyone has dated pictures we could make a better guess. She may have done it, but I don't know for sure! I wasn't able to find dated pictures of her short hair, so I'm not sure.

I just took exception to people saying 'you need blunt tailbone length hair to pull off her updo', which I think I've demonstrated you don't. It would probably be waaaay easier to do it with blunt hair, though!

Her hair is very thick. Here are pictures of it down over different times as well as up, http://www.ilxor.com/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?boardid=40&threadid=67156.

I still do not think she uses extensions. I could be wrong. It is my opinion though.

I tried this style out on my hair when I did my last over night castor oiling; it worked well because I struggle to get my hair to stay up even with pins overnight. I tucked the loose tail through the top rather than pinning it.

It looked frightful with the grease, but it stayed. I will try it with dry hair soon and see how that comes out. If it's good, there will be photos :D

Yeah, the best thing about it was how rock solid it is! I can't think of a better way to anchor long hair to your head. It's basically a complicated way to cornrow a braid to your head!

It's most likely a switch that gets braided into her real hair, there if you go to the wiki page there is a picture without her braids and she's barely BSL and it kind of looks like she wears extensions, there is a great shade and length difference between her canopy and the lower half part of her hair.

I tried this updo today, and could do it up to the part where you start adding strands from the right-side halo hair. But I couldn't add the left-side halo hair, got stuck there, but this is great. I usually wear the Crown Braid using Skitt's method. Anyway I am wearing a Crown Braid now. :)

I've tried doing this three times with tailbone length hair and I can't seem to get it to work. When you say to add hair at each bump do you mean with each section, like a french braid or after doing one whole cycle of a braid only adding one piece? I hope that makes sense.

I've been doing it 'french braid' style, but I actually think it would look more Yulia-esque 'lace braid' style, adding every other piece. Yet to try it though, I'll let you know how it goes!

I keep it close to my ears by placing the halo right behind my ears, and then weaving it very tightly to my head. That is, when I pick up a halo piece to incorporate into my hair, I grab it very close to the scalp, and maintain tension. tilting your head forward helps, too, I've found. And don't worry, my braid starts to taper at the 'left halo' as well.

I tried this yesterday and almost suceeded. I'm not very good at braiding when it involves adding more strands in so it didnt quite stay where I wanted it to. It looked very Juliaesque when I cheated with a few hair pins. With a bit more practise, I can see this becomming a nice go to style for me.

Thanks again for working out how to do it.

As I suspected I have far too much taper for this to look good but it was fun trying. I do like the look of the first half so maybe it will all look good in a couple of years if I manage to reduce the taper.

That's odd, because I have a lot of taper due to layers. Perhaps if you take a larger chunk of hair for the halo?

I tried that but it just left me with a weird, very obvious parting. I guess I just have to accept that this style just isn't for me. (At least not yet, still hoping to get rid of some of the taper.)

I've had my most successful go today (the first time was for sleeping with castor oil in, so was very ugly and the second wasn't tight enough. When DH gets home I'll have him take photos. It tapers a little oddly and my loose end which I wrapped around and pinned took a fair few pins as it reaches all around my head again!

I'll blog about it and post photos here later. With practise this will be a VERY good style for gigs I think, as it looks funky (forget it's politician's origins) and will withstand headbanging. Score. :D

Ok, am I the only one who still doesn't understand how to start it?

The side chunk of hair which looks like bangs doesn't get braided? Or does it? I still don't get what I do with the ponytail chunk at the back?

After trying to make Heidi braids stay without slipping, I'd love to try this as you say it's anchored to the head so won't slip back... and it's gorgeous, but I'm still confused...

First understand what you are doing. There are two parts: the main braid, and the halo. Anything else is just extra tips.

You free a halo/section of hair around your head. This halo will be the anchor for the main braid, and help thicken and extend it.

All the rest of the hair (even the bang chunk) gets swept back and becomes the main braid. As you braid around your head, you incorporate pieces from the halo as if you were lace braiding.

I'll make a video when I get home.

Here's my go from today. I still need to perfect it, but no-one looked at me funny when I wore it out. I had to alter the colour balances on the left photo as my face was lilac (huh?), but the right photo is as it came out. That shine largely due to cassia!

Arya, you inspired me with your beautiful crown braid! I knew I just HAD to do it. I tried a total of 4 times before I gave up :( I'm not really sure what my problem was, but I just kept getting stuck when the braid got to my ear. I tried hanging upside down and that didn't help either. I thought it would be easy as I have no fringe and I wouldn't have so many sections to worry about....but I failed

All was not lost though, as in the end I went with Torrin's tutorial and had success. So I want to say a big THANK YOU for starting this thread as it inspired me to persevere with a style I've longed to do ever since I joined LHC all those years ago. :flowers:

I just tried this with short hair (7"?) and managed to get a style that looked ok. I'll take photos, and while it's not quite Tymoshenko standards I'm pretty happy with my coronet braid :D

I only just remembered about posting these photos! They're pretty big I'm afraid.
This is what mine looked like, bear in mind my hair is a very layered chin/almost-shoulder length here. With the extra inch and a half I have now I could probably make this look neater.

Have you tried lace braiding yet? I found it to be waaay easier than french/dutch braids, and twice as fast, since you only incorporate hair on one side of the braid.

Wow, I'm shocked!!! Great job. I had no idea you could do this hair with hair as short as yours. I'm very happy now, maybe I should go amend the video and add that you can do it with short hair!

Just stick with it, it gets a loooot easier with practice. Try on other people's heads, ( or with the edges of rugs or fringes on lamps if people won't let you touch their hair. that's actually how I learned to french braid as a kid XD)

Looks Beautiful, Madora. How long is your hair, Madora? My longest layer is waist, and I feel like I only need another four inches or so to do it her way (with significant taper, however).

@ elbow chic

Thank you very much! I love this style and have now decided to wear it more often.

I use a Topsy Tail tool make the braid resemble a true braid (which of course it is not since I'm doing this style via the "lace French Dutch braid method).

Before discovered the Topsy Tail took I used to push the end of the braid through the first loop where the braid originally began and then pin the tassle under the braids in place.

Now I use the Topsy Tool to push the braid thru the first braid made, undo the remainder of the braid, then hide the long tassel under the braids already in place (that's about 7 inches of hair).

I really like the effect! And its fast to make, which is even better!

It seems odd to me that your hair would be that length and not reach around your head? Is it taper that's causing the problem?

ravenreed

Some people's braids seem to eat up more length than others. That could be part of it. I think if I hit 40" I could just barely get around my head, and I have a fairly small head. So head size can be another issue.

Maybe it's because we're both of Irish descent? I'm told I look super Irish (even besides the colouring). Aw, you don't have any pictures of your face in your albums, I was hoping to compare. And you should try the style with wet hair, others have managed it quite well at your length! It's like cornrows, you can have hair two inches long, but the braid can go all the way around your head!

Awesome tutorial! I love how you keep the side part with the crown-braid look--I love crown braids but I don't like the look of my hair pulled straight back from my forehead, so I don't do them very often. I tried it tonight but I ended up with a two-inch braid on one side of my head and then an abrupt jump to a half-inch braid on the other side where the hair in the braid from the center back ended :( I really liked the way it looked apart from the size jump, though! Next time I will make the "halo" sections larger and the back section smaller and see how that works. At any rate, I'll for sure do it when my hair gets longer!

LOVE IT! It took me 2 hours to figure out to angle my head so I could to get the braid against the crown of my head, but it worked!!!! You have no idea how exciting this is -- no other crown braid I've done has worked on my hair!

It's a little thick on the side I started on, but I think that's partially because I didn't pull it firm enough against my head. I'll have to practice a few more times and see if that's still a problem, but hopefully it'll even out nicely like yours!

I will post pictures as soon as I can. THANKS!!!!

Arya, thank you so much for this tutorial! I love the crown braid but could never achieve it without a stiff neck and tired arms. I changed one part of your method - I just used all of the hair in front, from ear to ear instead of the thinner pieces as you did. My hair is layered and it took more of my hair to get this style completed, but I must say it looks pretty good.
