Just curious to get some new ideas!
What is everyone's favorite way to sleep with their hair? I usually braid mine off to the side My hair is just creeping past shoulder on its way to APL. Occasionally I will do a sock bun on the top of my head which is pretty comfortable and leaves some pretty curls in the morning if I am nice and neat about it. For both styles I always do a light oiling of my ends with coconut oil!
So, care to share your night time routines and secrets!? :D

I braid my hair. I used to do two braids, but since my hair has gotten so thick, I now do four. They are comfortable and enhance my natural waves quite nicely. I also use coconut oil. :)

I bend at the waist, bring all my hair in front of me, detangle it thoroughly with a wide tooth comb.
Then I braid it loosely three-quarters of the way down. I do not band the tassle but take the braid and coil it in a bun on top of my head and hide the tassle and under the braid. (I use 6 3 inch crimped pins to hold it in place). I rarely have any tangles to deal with in the morning.

I tend to just leave my hair down. It's BSL. Sometimes I braid it, almost without thinking about it. But I don't tie the end.

Braid if it's long enough, but no matter how I put my hair up when I go to sleep, by the morning it ends up loose and tangled.

I've started wrapping my hair to sleep with a soft, stretchy fabric remnant. I take a strip of fabric, probably 8-10" wide and at least 4' long and tie it around my head like a headband, tying it once at the nape of my neck, under my hair. Then I braid that with my hair, using the two fabric tails as two of the braid strands and my hair as the third. This yields kind of a wrapped-hair look to the tail. Then I can tie the two ends of fabric around the ends of the hair to finish the braid. After that, I coil it into a bun and tie the fabric ends together to secure the bun. It's loose, and kind of easy to squish into a comfortable shape for sleeping. I do sleep on my side most of the time, but I've found I can squash the bun into a flatter shape for sleeping on my back.
This hair wrap also keeps the fuzzy little hairs back from my face so I can wrap up my hair before I wash up before bed and I don't have to worry as much about getting oil and stuff in my hairline.

I have just recently started putting my hair in a satin night cap that I bought at Walgreens. It leaves my hair smooth and my ends have soft flip curl to it. It works wonderfully right now.

Single braid, down the middle, snag-ree elastic....when I remember to.
I just leave it down about half the time, until I get it wrapped around my neck a few nights in a row, then it's back to the braid.

Most nights I bun my hair in a regular cinnamon bun, but my favorite style for the night is an english braid. It's so comfortable!
I have also started sleeping with a warm hat for extra growth (I like cool rooms for sleeping). It's still an experiment, so I don't know if it's working yet. :p

I sleep on a silk pillowcase with my hair in a braid. I curl the braid up on the pillow.
Madame J. your hair wrap sounds good. I will have to try that way sometime & see if it works for me.

I use to braid it but it seemed to do more harm than good at times so I just wear it down. The only problem I have now is my cat likes to sleep on my pillow and steps on the little hairs on the top of my head to wake me up when she is hungry. Once I figure out how to fix that, life will be good.

haha @Jeno- My cats do that too. I haven't found a solution. Now that I usually put my hair up.. I just get smacked in the face by little paws.. Don't know which is worse!
And Madame J- Your wrap sounds interesting! Do you have a photo of the finished product? I think I understand what you are saying but I am definitely a visual learner. :)

I just started sleeping on silk pillow cases and I love them! I usually just throw my hair above my head on the pillow. Seems to work okay!

As my hair isn't quite that long yet, I've taken to braiding it on the side and making a smaller braid for the hair that won't fit in to that. It gives my normally stick-straight hair a little touch of texture, which I like.

I wrap and tie a scarf around my head to keep my short ends from getting bent at odd angles. So I usually resmeble some type of pirate around bedtime : D. I can't wait until its long enough to actually *do* something with.

I LOVE sleeping with it loose-but I rarely do, for fear of damage.
I sometimes braid it very lightly, so that no braid pattern forms by morning -they don't look good on me. Or I just twist it into a bee butt bun and pray for curls.

I never get on with silk/sation pillowcases, but one thing I swear by is a silk-scarf. If I want super-nice hair in the morning, I make a soft twist with my hair and tie the scarf around like a fifties-housewife, with the knot at my forehead. When I wake up my hair is frizz-free and well behaved :)
...although the other half does laugh at me for it.... >.<

Usually a single, central English braid with a siicone band. If I am sleeping with a scalp oiling I make pigtail, wrap them round my head and cover with a silk scarf.
If you do a search there's already a large thread on the subject.

Laying on your hair? It can rub against your back and the bed if you move and creates mechanical damage. It could also bend your ends up from the weight being on folded hair.
I wake up many a day with my hair underneath me, and my ends always feel a little rough after.

I normally braid my hair. Last night for the first time i managed to yank my hair right back because the braid got caught i guess that's showing its getting longer:p

Twin braids secured by small scrunchies, coconut oil in ends when needed. Sleep on a satin pillowcase. :)

How long is yours? My hair only reaches my shoulders at the moment so im not really laying on mine yet. However I do sleep on my back sometimes or on my side. Even though i do not lay on it should i still get a headwrap or something till my hair grows longer?

I've been sleeping with it in a high bun but lately started braiding it into three braids. I like the texture of my hair better with the braids. The bun feels like it almost makes it tangly even though it never dries by morning.

Madame J, I tried to picture your description in my head but wasn't successful - if you had some photos I'd love to see them :)
OP, my hair is just below shoulder length and wurly, so I sleep with my hair in a loose ponytail on the top of my head (aka a pineapple) or I sleep with a PrettyWrap (bonnet+scarf hair wrap).

Usually in a loosely pinned bun. I don't move around very much when I'm sleeping so it works just fine for me :D

I usually have it in a side braid, two braids or a bun on top of my head.
The other night I had it loose and I threw it over the bed, something Ive never done before (surprised that it really is long enough to HANG there). It felt very comfortable and somehow airy... :D
BUT, in the morning I noticed a chunk of hair missing!
My cat is known to love chewing on various materials, including hair... He prefers dreads but this time straight hair got the approval too... I do sometimes sleep with loose hair and he's never chewed on it like that before, I guess all the hair hanging there looked too good resist?
Luckily it's not that noticeable, about ten 10cm from one lock, but I did panic for a moment when the chunk of hair just came loose to my hand :O
So yea, I'll just stick to the braids and wont toss them over the bed :D

I either put mine into a rayon snood or in a satin sleep bonnet or sometimes when I'm really rockin' the sexy Old Mother Hubbard look, both at the same time!!!! :disco:For me, it's gotten to be a "have-to" thing, unless I want to lose more hair to damage, tangles, and matting. I toss and turn and travel all over the bed while I sleep, so the more security, the better.

Usually either loose or bunned with a scrunchie. If I've done a conditioning treatment or heavy oiling I often just gather it all up in a shower cap though.

I braid my hair tightly to about a half of its length to prevent tangles.

I usually wear it in a loose braid now. I used to do it in a half pony tail (the bottom part caught in the elastic), but it's getting too long to do that now. I would love to figure out how to wear my hair to bed when I'm wearing it curly. I have yet to find a solution that allows me to get up in the morning with normal looking hair. I usually get up and it's a huge mass of frizz and knots. Any suggestions?

Used a satin scarf wrap I bought at Sally's for the first time last night, before then I just wore it loose to bed because I never had the patience to braid it but always felt guilty because I knew I was causing my hair breakage.
The wrap worked great! Never came off my head. Only problem was my head did get a little hot, but I don't have to worry about how to deal with that till summer...
So a hardy "yay!" overall!

I haven't found the perfect one. Best is a bun on the top of my head. A braid works as well. BUT when I'm with my boyfriend everything changes. First he doesn't have nice satiny pillowcases like me lol and we end up moving around a lot so a bun comes undone and a braid becomes insanely tangled. :(
