View Full Version : Hair Styles to Wear With Sun Hats?

In the past when summer came around I would always avoid going outside and spent my times indoors because I hate having sun on my skin. This year, I realize *screw that* because I love being outside!
So, I've been thinking... Among other things, I'm going to have to get a sun hat at some point. What are some good summery hairstyles that can be worn under a hat?

Gibson braids look cute and work well with a hat.

Yeah, any sort of braid would probably work as long as it's relatively flat to the head. A low bun might work, depending on the hat. I can do a low lazy wrap with a Ficcare that's relatively secure. I just bought a sun hat for an upcoming trip and the future summer, so I'd be interested in some other ideas, too. 8)

I wear a low bun with my sun hats, low enough that it doesn't get in the way of the hat. A braid also works, but with the bun your hair is also protected from the sun as it's tucked up under the brim.

Braids are great. I also wear a simple flat cinnamon bun with Amish pins or a French twist and can fit a hat over that, although I am a ii so my buns aren't super-huge. I actually love putting on a hat over a bun and then pinning the hat *to* the bun with a hat pin. It holds awesomely and baffles people.

I too have issues with hats. What I would love is an old fashioned sun bonnet. You know, the kind Laura Ingalls wore in Little House on the Prarie! Something designed with hair in mind...
I found a pattern online, but at one point it said something about 'construct bonnet in the usual manner'...yeah. ok. :p But I think they'd be great because the poofy part would be big enough for 'do's, and the one I saw had a ruffle thing in the back to protect the neck from the sun. Of course, depending on how dippy I would look in said bonnet, it might be a hat for gardening only!

Ooh, the hat pin idea is interesting! Where do you get hat pins? And how do you find hats that are big enough? I usually like pretty large hats even without trying to fit them over buns, so adding a bun to the mix, I'd need a somewhat giant hat!
I can wear a low cheater's easy hairstick bun with a bike helmet, so I'm hopeful that it will also work with my wide-brimmed sun hat, but I haven't tried it yet.

Braids... Hrmmmm... Not a huge fan. Not because they aren't pretty but because I don't have much patience for them and thus usually enjoy them on others but not myself.
But maybe I will just have to practice more and get faster. I would get tired of simply doing a low bun all the time. I should probably take this as a challenge. I think I will. :p

CinnamonCurls has a tutorial on a very flat bun on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSf1vv8oB6g) that might work well under a sun hat, depending on the size of your head.
My head is so huge that I tend to go with a braid or a low bun when I wear a sun hat, because any kind of bun that would tuck into the hat band would make my hat not fit me, and as it is I have a man's gardening hat for a sun hat. (I'm just not a small person anywhere.)

Well, like I said, my hair isn't so thick that I need a big hat. Normal hats fit over my buns. Hat pins--you can get them on Etsy, or use hair sticks if they are thin. Like these (http://www.firemountaingems.com/details.asp?PN=H206799FN) or these (http://www.etsy.com/listing/61515424/20-hatpin-blanks-8-inch-long-findings?ref=sr_list_15&ga_search_query=hat%2Bpin&ga_filter=&ga_noautofacet=1).

I have quite a big-sized head and have trouble finding sun hats that will fit me, so I was toying with the idea of getting a parasol. There are online shops that sell parasols that aren't just for bridal outfits.
I do wish that some of the more sensible methods of avoiding the sun would make a come back. I have a lot of facial moles that I want to protect from the sun, in addition to this, I get headaches from bright light and hot sunshine. I just think I'm not suited to sunny climes, just as well I live in Ireland where sunshine is not a constant :p

That is what I want, the Laura Ingalls hat! YES! I have been wanting one for a long time because it will fit all your hair comfortably and protect it from the sun. These are the perfect hats, why did these hats ever go out of style? If you find one for sale online, PLEASE...give me a link.:)

lol... I've got a prairie-bonnet that I wear when out gardening. We frequent several historical sites and my daughter & I both wear ours there as well. Braids tuck up under them, buns fit IN them, they keep the neck cool AND loose hair-strands don't get caught like I've had happen with a few straw-type hats.
Currently I'm searching for a sun-protective hat that won't pull at my hair. I tend to wear my hats with braids or VERY low buns, but would also love to try new styles!

Really, it wouldn't, at least if you don't part your hair. When I wear the hat I pull it all straight back, no parts, and my bun takes up the vast majority of the open space. :)
OMG WANT! Thank you Nightshade! (does it protect your neck? It looks like it would...)
It does a little, not a ton, though, as the brim does taper towards the back. I've never had the back of my neck burned with it, but it's always the hat AND SPF75.

Nightshade - thats true.:) I have fine thin hair though and I can't totally hide my scalp. But if you had thick hair and wore a bun on top I can see how your head would be ok.
Plus, I live in S. Arizona. And the sun will lighten the hair.

I thought about that, but its too complicated and I'm really lazy. I have to wear a hat almost 365 days of the year here and I get sooo sick of it...lol
Thats why the Laura Ingalls hat is so appealing is because it is all soft and cottony, and it just looks so comfortable.:) And I can wear it while I"m driving without it bonking into the back of the seat.;)
I'm going to buy one.

Someone needs to bring these back into fashion. Maybe it will be me.:D lol. You can't keep a good hat down I always say!

I like low infinity buns when I don't do braids with a hat.
Nightshade, that's a pretty awesome hat. Not what I'd want, though -- I've burned my scalp (not just the part, but the whole top of my head) through my hair before, and after finding a skin cancer on my not-bald-DH's scalp last spring, I'm making an effort to cover my head when outside.

I've been lucky so far and not burned my scalp, but you've good reason to be wary. Most of our yard is shaded and only the veggie garden is direct sun, so I think for the limited exposure I get, and since I've not had a problem thus far, I'll stick with the hat and a bun :D

I've been using mostly either straw or folding hats for quite a while with double braids, either french or lace, or a low bun. For folding hats I like these because they travel so well:

I don't do sun well, burning if I think about the sun as it were, so I keep one of these in my bag all the time.

Either a very low bun (infinity, nautilus, Chinese), or a very flat bun squished under the hat (usually braided bun), or (more rarely) braids. Sometimes when I am canoeing I put my hair in 2 low-ish English braids, tie them together (many times, as my hair is thin and long) at the nape of my neck, and either squish everything together under the hat, or pin it low just under the hat.
I, too, have had problems with straw hats catching on my hair... am contemplating a bandana under the hat for this summer...:hmm:
Nifty thread! :)

If you make a braided bun with a braid that is very loose, you can pin it really flat. I use the three goody pins you see in the picture below, they hold well. I buy them in sets of 12 for about $3. I don't remember where I got them, but I think saw them at Sally's.

I wouldn't like that either. That is one thing I don't like about all sun hats in general is they obscure my peripheral vision.
I guess this is why cowboy hats are better is because the sides curl up.

I wish I knew....apparently I have a giganto-head so it's trouble enough just finding a sun hat that fits.
If they *almost* fit, I have to let them sit toward the back of my head, so there's not really anything I can do. I pretty much have to always where my hair down (or in a nape ponytail).
ETA: hmm, maybe that could work for me, since it's not really *meant* to sit down over your entire head:

Have you looked at a tilley hat? I use those and baseball hats when working outdoors/at horse shows and I find that I can do an english braid and fold it under or a simple messy bun. It usually is a low messy bun, and I also do a mangled flip of my own, which is low and fits under the hat, or the baseball hat has the hole to loop hair through. There are some great microfibre baseball hats that are light weight, even SPF protected. I love mine :)

Speaking for myself, I love those (had to google it). Are there specific shops that would sell in sizes? I usually have got mine in dept stores (men's section) and they barely fit my big head.
Or is online buying best?

I must wear hats because of skin cancer. I just had 6 cancerous/precancerous spots frozen off my face by my dermatologist. So, even though I have hats...a couple of beat up cowyboy hats, a sombrero, lots of baseball caps, a bonnet....I still needed a town hat. So I went to some second hand shops and found a fun straw hat, very pretty. (I also use sunscreen).
I am happy to see a thread about hat wearing :) and I am probably going to get me a Tilley hat as well.

I've been running around in a Tilley (they called it their Audubon edition, but I think that sponsorship has since ended) since this spring. Very comfy, but I think the breathable nylon that DH has is cooler than the Nylatanium. Braids and Infinity buns are best under it, for me.

I love my Tilleys & have worn them for many years. After I started wearing my hair in updos, I bought one a size larger than my previous Tilleys to accomodate my hair.
My current favorite updo is a hypno-bun held with a stick. When I need my hat on, I just pull out the hairstick & stash it with my cell phone, then put the hat on & my bun stays in place. It's very quick to reverse the process (remove the hat & place the stick back in the bun).

I feel a pioneer bonnet making session coming on. With a drawstring, as if I look utterly daft in it, I can ship it off to little cousin who just looks devastatingly cute in Anything.
I wear a broad brimmed Tilley with my plait tucked up in the crown. The menfolk can't grouse - they bought me that hat.
Those shallow crowned straw hats look stunning - on with the linen coif to prevent any posible damage though...
The Good Day Hairpins intimidate the socks off me. My hair is too thin to warrant something that looks so fearsomely gynaecological. <terrified>

I have an inexpensive straw hat that I cut a hole in for my ponytail/braid/bun. I just put the hat on and pushed it down over my ponytail, marked the approximate place where I should cut then took it off and cut a hole in it. I get all the coverage of the wide-brimmed hat without smashing my hair.

I bought a really cute open crown sun hat at Cracker Barrel a couple of years ago. (It was the day I had a meet with Autumn Leaves.) The hat works really well with a high bun. It's the hat I'm wearing in the beach walking pic on my blog opening page. Maybe they still have them this year.

My only brimmed hat is sized very close to my head-- even a French braid makes it too small. It sits tight and low. It's awesome in wind or riding, but not so much for the hair. :/ I can't do much of anything with it. A clubbed or hanging English braid is about it.
I've been looking for a super shallow-crowned hat for a loooong time now. Like this (http://www.top-hats.com/2689.htm), but less... straw-ey. I want something that would be slightly harder to destroy. I think it's be awesome for longhairs.

Chromis lol, that doesn't look too bad, but it certainly is far from what I'll be needing. I need a hat for simple purposes such as walking around the city, walking to the metro from home, university, etc. I don't engage in activities that are actually outside or require me spending hours outside but I wouldn't risk burning and tanning in the few minutes I have to be outside while running errands, walking, etc.
I also mostly wear buns, and don't like wearing my hair down unless I'm out during the night. I prefer the more modest look for work and studying. I have been thinking of updos today, and with my current hat the best option probably is doing one or two braids, folding in half and pinning at the base. it's not exactly all up, but it would be protected and still look contained.

Thanks, neko_kawaii , saw a couple I could use. Might have to try them all, as I think my hair might create a bun a tiny bit more bulgy, but I might as well get one or two other hats to work with the different styles :D
On a side note... your hair has gotten so long!
Update: just ran and did a somewhat messy infinity bun and it works!! I feel stupid for not thinking of that as my first option, I mean, I have done similar buns, I just never made them so low. It looks quite decent, too, I like being able to see my hair from the side and how it covers my neck hair, and perhaps a braided version will work too.

Glad it was helpful! I wear a hat most times I go outdoors, so one of my first issues when learning LHC styles was what I could wear with a hat.
Anje
September 7th, 2016, 11:48 AM
A LOT of it comes down to how big your buns are vs the amount of space you have between where the hat band sits and the hairline on your neck. My infinity buns are getting too bulky for that space at this point. I might have to try Chromis' visor + buff solution sometime, or switch to a baseball cap with a hole in the back and use Wildcat Diva's new trick. I also saw a woman once with the coolest hat, it was like a traditional straw sun hat, but the top was cut off so her bun fit, it ended up looking a bit like a visor that went all the way around... That sounds really weird when I describe it but I swear it looked really nice and classy. Unfortunately she got it from Nordstrom's- out of my price range.

I like braided L-Infinity Bun or braided Spidermom's Bun (double-loop LWB) since they are a bit horizontal. They don't fit under a hat for me, but the hat can sort of sit on top and cover the low bun a bit and it works. :)

I've tried low buns with wearing wide-brimmed sunhats--my hair is thick enough that it just ends up tipping the hat over my eyes! Which is obviously not ideal. So I usually just go for two English braids. I feel I look more witchy that way anyhow c:

I did it! I made a prototype topless hat from stuff I had laying around:

I think it needs a band around the inside edge to absorb sweat and be extra nice to my hair, and of course it doesn't look super classy like I got it at Nordstrom's, but the concept works, I can wear a bun and have shade on my face without a big hassle. Take that, skin cancer! :D

I love boxer braids under a floppy sun hat, but it doesn't protect my length all too well... To mitigate sun damage, you should always use some kind of serum or leave in conditioner before you go out on a sunny day.
The ingredient polyquat-59 can be used in hair products in a very similar way that chemical sunscreen works. Absorbing UV radiation and turning it into heat, so to speak. Link! I think sunscreen for the hair is important because sunlight can really wreck your hair, especially if you're sweating. It breaks down the disulfide bonds quite well, IIRC, as well as removing the lipid layer that sits on each strand.
TLDR; use some kind of leave in conditioner when you go out into the sun. This particular ingredient has "sunscreen" capabilities.

Oh I just love sun hats! I just bought a new one yesterday. I do a low bun in the back left side, side low pony, or side low braid. These also work directly in the back depending on your style preferences. Sun hats have give a classy look to cute little sun dresses, which I also have a deep love for.
