View Full Version : Chelating shampoos in Europe?

My area has very hard water and I am interested in doing a chelating shampoo treatment. However I haven't seen any of the brands that you girls are using on here.
Does anyone have the name of any european brands of this type of shampoo?

I've got the same probelm as you. My water is very hard. Citric acid rinces help, but I still need to use a clarifying shampoo quite often. I know there is a difference between clafrifying and chelating shampoos (even if I can't remember what that difference is) but I use what I can and it seems to work.

I've never seen any shampoos sold in France as clarifying or chelating shampoos. I'm sure they must exist; French people must get product and mineral build up like the rest of us. I must be looking in the wrong places.

My favourite clarifying shampoo is the Boot's expert build up shampoo. As it's from Boot's, I'm afraid it won't be available in France (I stock up when I go to the UK) I've tried aloe rid from nexxus (bought on-line from HQhair) which I think is a more specifically chelating shampoo, but it was a lot more expensive without being any more effective on my hair.

On the other hand, for an easy to find in France shampoo, I find that the Ultra doux tilleuil shampoo is quite good at getting the minerals out of my hair if I leave it on for a while to let it work.

I'll be watching this thread to see if anyone else in France has any better suggestions.

Cool another person in France specifically.
I'll have to try the Ultra doux tilleuil shampoo, I know that stuff is everywhere. I have been using ACV rinses but they aren't really getting the minerals out , it's almost like I can feel them on there?
It's possible that I have some kind of buildup I have been using Melvita non sulfate Familial doux shampoo for several years. But like I said I do frequent vinegar rinses.

I'll be watching this thread. I'm looking for such a shampoo in Germany! I don't even know what chelate would be in German. But we do have very hard water.

What is the ingredient I have to watch out for? EDTA? What else?

I'm really waiting for answers! Dutch is okay, too, I can jump over the border and buy Dutch shampoos or order them online.

Rinsing with ascorbic acid should help with metal buildup as far as I know. Our Finnish member Arctic wrote a lot about it in her blog while experimenting, but her blog is private. She got a lot of her info from a Finnish hair board. On old LHC there was a thread about miracle water as well:
http://archive.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=51184 This uses both citric and ascorbic acid but just ascorbic acid might be enough. I'm definitely not an expert but this might be something to look into, if interested.

I've tested rinsing with vitamin C diluted in water and it did do something, I felt a very metallic smell and got really soft hair from this.

This line, http://sim.fi/en-cxcorrector also have a shampoo that's mineral removing but alas, it is also Finnish and available to me but I'm not sure to how many others.

OK, checking out lookfantastic.com I found Paul Mitchell Shampoo Three (http://www.lookfantastic.com/haircare/shampoo/deep-cleansing/paul-mitchell-shampoo-three-300ml.html) that sounds like it could be chealting.

In Holland it is exactly the same. No one has ever heard of clarifying or chelating!

Chelating shampoos are for mineral buildup and clarifying shampoos are for product buildup, right? I don't know of any chelating shampoos. My clarifying shampoo is Balea Professional Pure+Fresh (http://www.balea.de/cgi-bin/balea_professional.pl?id=professional_pure_fresh) from dm-drogeriemarkt. Things like "frees hair from all residue" and "deep cleansing for every type of hair" are written on the bottle, so I guess it makes a good clarifier.

LOVE IT! The first I tried and I am sticking to it  I also love that it's dirt cheap, pun intended :D

Balea is great, I like dm's stuff in general but Balea really rocks!

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong (which I might well be), but aren't chelating shampoos often labelled as "swimmer's shampoos" or similar? I've yet to see something labelled in the UK as a 'chelating' shampoo, but ones designed for frequent swimmers seem to do the same thing.

Not from the UK, but my googling seems to support your thesis! Both prevent mineral build-up, so I guess they are very similar if not the same. :)

You can use good old club soda to chelate. I used that, shampooed and moisturized well - worked great!

There is a new one from Garnier Fructis: http://www.pinkmelon.de/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/garnier_purer_glanz_teas1.jpg

Joico K-Pak chelating shampoo is available in the UK on eBay 300ml bottles, and the huge litre bottle from gorgeousshop (http://www.gorgeousshop.co.uk/shop/joico-15/joico-litres-1244/joico-k-pak-treatment-shampoo-clarifying-chelating-conditioning-5439.html) works out cheaper, but as it's an odd shape with no pump it's a pain to use/lift ... I decanted into a smaller more manageable bottle.

I'm in Estonia, and I found something that is cheaper than Joico: Four reasons, deep cleanse shampoo. Here's a link to it, it's the one that's green http://miraculos.fi/en/four-reasons-shampoos-and-conditioners

it specifically says on the bottle, that it removes mineral buildup, and that it's for regions were water is hard.

I have used it and it seems to work. my hair only looks good after chelating :( otherwise it gets too flat and eventually look like greasy. chelating gives volume and softness.

Yay! I hope it works really well, it probably won't be a fortune here since it's garnier. This is so exciting, our water is 'calc city' , really hard. I can't wait to find this, does anybody know if it's in stores?

March 30th, 2011, 05:07 AM
maybe you should check your country homepage of garnier fructis? In Germany it came into the shops like a few months ago.

In that case I'm sure it is in the stores here then, it's garnier central. I never really look at the shampoo at the store because i get my shampoo from the 'bio cosmetic place' .
I think I'll make a trip up to the commercial zone this afternoon .

"Bling Hair Rehab Detox Shampoo" from Lee Stafford. I think this is both a clarifying and chelating shampoo.

The funny thing is, I always over looked Balea as a brand. Next time I go to dm i'll have a closer look:D

but how often is it ok to chelate? is it damaging for hair?

I have heard it can be very drying, I was planning on doing it about once a month. We have really hard water here so maybe more in the summer when we will go swimming more?

Our water is between middle and hard, according to our water supplier (yes, I checked this. I'm that crazy :D). I'm also planning to use a chelating shampoo once a month, twice at most. Guess, I will have to test this.
