View Full Version : Things I bought since joining LHC

February 11th, 2011, 07:49 PM
I joined in September after a little lurking...

African Butterfly comb - nice
EZ combs - only good for half-up dos
Goody thick plastic hairpins - staple, love them
Bone detagling comb - good buy
Tangle Teezer - I use this exclusively these days
Silk sleeping cap - Falls out all the time
Satin pillowcase - love it
Coconut Oil - love it
Rajahstani Henna from Jaipur - I love it
Almond oil - nice, but only for my skin, it was cheap though
Argan Oil - INCREDIBLE
Castor oil - jury's out, I only had this a week
African Shea Butter - smells funny but it's super on hair & skin
GVP Matrix balm - good buy
L'Oreal triple nutrition fortifying conditioner - very good
Apple cider vinegar for rinses - love it
Baking soda for clarifying - I use, rarely. It works well.
Citric acid - I have not used yet
Fenugreek - jury's out, only used once
Haircutting scissors for S&D - must have
Aloe vera clear gel - love it in SMT, and with water in a spritzerI am considering buying hair forks and hair sticks, but I think I'll take a short break for now :)

What did you buy? :)

Ooh, great thread idea!

Ficcare maximus. Technically, I didn't buy this myself, but I wouldn't have asked for one if it hadn't been for LHC :) Love it!
Hairsticks. Yes!
Coconut oil. I use this almost every day, along withmy regular olive oil.
Volumizing spray (not because of what I'd heard about it, but because I had volume envy from lots of members here :D) I'm not crazy about the scent, but the volume is fantastic!
Shower cap. I had never had a reuseable shower cap, but I use it almost every day! :crush:
Curlers. I have an addiction to curling my hair ..
Soft curlers for nighttime use. Please see above!
3 afro combs - my new favourite comb, because the teeth are deep enough to get through all of my hair. No comb has been able to do this before, ever! I'd refinitely recommend.
Shower comb (extra wide tooth) I wish I hadn't sat on this and broken it :o
BBB - I had one before, but it wasn't real boar bristles. I think it had Nylon or something mixed in. I really like the one I have now, and it was an excellent price.
Decorative combs - I love the way these look, but they slip out of my hair a lot. I usually anchor them with bobby pins, and, well, that sort of defeats their purpose. They're super pretty, anyways.
Metal-free elastics - I have always used these, but for some reason, LHC has been inducing me to purchase them in ever-increasing quantities!
EZ combs - To be honest, I haven't ever used these. They are so pretty, but I got them when my hair was too long for them to be practical for use. I'll have to dig them out, though - thank you for the reminder!A lot of the things I've purchased, I've realized, are because LHC has fueled a sort of hobby. For some girls it's nails; some guys bodybuild; I guess I'm sort of like that with hair styling!

Two Baerreis forks
One Aliarose stick
One Nightblooming stick from the Swap Board
Two VK Designs sticks
Two Flexi-8s
One cedar stick from a maker whose name I don't remember
Amish pins
A great big wide-toothed comb that has replaced my brushes
Nightblooming Triple Moon Anointing Oil
Cone- and sulphate-free products
Scissors for self-trims

Not a lot considering some people's impressive hairtoy collections, but that's from lack of fun money, not lack of wishing! :p

(And this is my 100th post. Woohoo!)

Hair sticks by Fox.
Grahtoe hair forks.
Random cheap hair sticks.
Flexi 8s.
Celestial Wave barrettes.
Beadmask leather leaf slides.

ArtistTree wooden combs.
Mason Pearson Ruby brush.

My products, aloe vera gel, acv, wwv, jojoba... are all pre-LHC.

eta... toothe reminded me... and congrats on your 100th post!!! But here's a couple more items.

Eclipse scissors.
Night Blooming Panacea. Worth mentioning!
Triple Moon Anointing oil. Ditto.

And... a silk night cap.

And my horn combs.

At least a thousand dollars worth of stuff. But, my hair is growing, I haven't chopped, and most of the time, it is livable with.

2peasinapod
February 12th, 2011, 01:34 AM
Just about everything I now use!

Coconut oil
Burt's Bees shampoo and conditioner
Wooden Wide Tooth comb (Body Shop)
Coconut oil and carrot hair wax

All my hair toys
1 hair stick
1 hair fork
1 hair head piece (don't know how else to describe it)
All my elastics, srunchies, headbands and bobby pins (too many to count)
Various scarfs and headcoverings

Not as impressive as some of the other lists, but a huge improvement from the cheapest shampoo, conditioner, and plastics combs I was using before. :)

ETA: I remember when I started growing my hair, I found some old barettes, elastics with metal, and cheap plastic brushes (the kind that fold in half and have balls on the end of the bristles). I was thinking I couldn't wait to be able to use these things. Then, I joined LHC and had to buy all new hair things. It was worth it, though. :)

coconut oil
3 African Butterfly combs
8 Hair Scroos
12 hair clips
Lots of small butterfly clips. My hair eats them!
Hair scissors for dusting

I don't feel guilty at all because I save a fortune by not going to salons.

Not a lot really.

Coconut oil, a Tangle Teezer and a BBB are the only things I've bought specifically for my hair.

I have other oils and essential oils, which I had before joining, for aromatherapy and massage purposes.

I haven't went the ways of silk pillowcase or sleep hat yet.

I'm resisting the urge of buying scissors until BSL because I'll end up cutting off my hair.

I don't have hair sticks or toys because a) I have no money and b) my hair isn't yet long enough.

So, all in all, not much at all!

Same here! It's so much fun playing around with hairtoys and learning how to use them that I bought a few Ficcare, Flexis, Sticks, a number of forks, some combs and oils as well as supplies for stick beading. This is a whole new world to discover!

I don't have hair sticks or toys because a) I have no money and b) my hair isn't yet long enough.
I think your hair is long enough! Before I bought my first hair stick, I had a paintbrush for practice. There's a discussion about using and decorating paintbrushes and how to turn them into hair toys in the self made hairtoys thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=131&goto=newpost) at the moment. I wonder if that's an option for you?

I've tried using chop sticks and it just doesn't stay up properly. With a bit more length, and a few less layers, I should be able to do the fancy pants knots and stuff.

Wood comb
Pair of Ketylos

Silicone elastics for the bottom of braids
60th Street fork (make/ship quicker!)

Things I still want:
Ficcare
Hair swords
Amish pins
Blue Starlites by Quattro
More Flexi-8s (I need a large at least to get a folded braid up, and god knows what size for a bun)

Thankfully, the first think I did when I joined the comm a couple weeks ago was read Ursula's Standard Newbie Advice (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=39), and one thing that really stuck with me was that her first piece of advice was to use what you already have before going out and buying tons of stuff to change your hair routine. So I've been really trying to use what I had first. (And fortuately, I found I already had a LOT of stuff: hair toys like sticks & forks, coconut oil, apple cider vinegar for rinse...)

Sooo, that said, here's what I did buy:

Lush Rehab shampoo
Lush Retread conditioner
Lush R&B moisturizer
John Frieda Root Awakening conditioner (sample size)

Kaya
February 12th, 2011, 11:07 AM
I'm hoping by listing the stuff that I"ve acquired since joining will scare some common sense into me and keep me from buying too much more!

-Monoi oil (vanille and Coco. Smell divine! Can't live without them hereafter.)
-Vatika Hair Oil
-Brahmi hair oil
-Glass oil bottles and droppers (Has made using my oils so much easier.)
-Meera Hair Powder (used only once; need to learn how to properly use it)
-V05 Clarifying shampoo and conditioner (never clarified before LHC.)
-Endless bottles of cone-free V05 conditioner to support daily CO washing.
-Various shampoos and conditioners that have been passed to a friend cause I didn't like them but didn't want to simply throw them away.
-Additional wide tooth combs to keep around the house and in my backpack.
-Extra ocotpus clips cause they are the only ones that will hold all my hair.
-Ultra-soft metal and glue free Goody hair ties. (They are actually labeled as head bands, and have no sort of fastening point at all. Just soft bands of fabric.)
-Scrunchies (Never used them or owned any before.)
-A wagon-load of France Luxe hair accessories. (Mainly accent pieces. Combs, rose barretts, Oleander bobby pins, silk charmeuse scrunchies, flowered ponytail holders and two sets of crystal-tipped hair sticks.)
-A burgundy Ficcare Maxima. (Really want to buy more...)
-Two sets of Longlocks hair sticks
-Inexpensive BBB (Only used it a few times, before starting a daily oiling routine.)
-Satin pillow cases

I think that is it. Whoa, I don't want to even think of how much money all that stuff required. shudder: Must stop frivolous buying...
I think I"ve settled into a good routine and have enough hair toys to satisfy for a while, so other than regular conditioner runs, I should be OK.

Fun thread!
*********************
Products
-Sulfate Free Shampoo (Jason's Organic Jojoba) - I've be COing for the past week and it works for me a lot better than using any shampoo so far... Still not sure if I'll go back to this or any shampoo.

-Conditioners (placenta protein, various hydration, repairing, et cetera) - I like most of the ones I get and try to stay cone free for now to see how that works for a while then I'll be cones to compare and see which one does better. And though this isn't exactly "new" for me to buy conditioner, I have never gone out and bought so many and looked at their ingredients since joing LHC!

-Henna/Cassia - Yeah... I love it. So glad I hennaed. Best decision ever. Yay! I've been using Mehandi's Celebration henna but might switch to HennaSooq next time I need to order more. I also think I might stop using a mixture of henna and cassia and just use henna to get a more vivid red. We'll see.

-Manic Panic's Vampire Red - Love and hate it... Beautiful freakin' color but I thought it would wash out a LOT faster than it did. Seems it loved to cling to the henna in my hair so it has slowly faded and my hair is more two-toned than I would like.

-EVOO - Nice occasionally since my hair tends to be dry, but I prefer to SMT.

-Honey and Aloe Vera Gel - for SMTing

-Jojoba Oil - for use after showering on ends

-Mustard Seed Oil - for growth, not sure if it works cause I use it with many other things

-GNC's Ultra Nourishair

-Showercap - for deep conditioning

Toys
-Hairgami - meh, it's a little difficult to get it just right. I prefer my hairsticks.

-3 Pronged Cat Hair Stick from Mehandi

-hair pins

****************
Going to be a while before I get anything else. Very very tight on $$$$ right now... *sigh*

Hair scissors (but don't use them anymore since I stopped cutting my hair)
Satin sleep cap (before I got my pillowcase)
Satin pillowcase
Hair sticks

Tangle teezer
Body Shop wooden detangling comb
Sweet orange EO
Coconut oil
Jojoba oil
Castor oil
Various shampoos and conditioners
BBB (don't use much anymore)
Clarifying shampoo
Apple cider vinegar
Flexi-8I have got to be forgetting some things... LOL. But now that I have a hair routine I like there won't be anymore buying for me (except maybe hair toys... :o)

I joined in December but I've been a member of naturallycurly for several years, so my product junkyism was already well-established. Since joining LHC I'm having fun experimenting with Indian haircare, so most of my purchases have been for that:

-Henna and Indigo (was using Lush before)
-Vatika hair oil
-Shikakai
-Amla
-Dried Hibiscus Flowers
-Fenugreek (haven't tried it yet)
-Brahmi (haven't tried it yet)
-Marshmallow root (haven't tried it yet and don't even know why I bought it. I saw it at the store, had a vague recollection of it being mentioned, and figured I'd buy it and figure it out later.)
-Castor oil and advocado oil - hoping for thicker hair, especially at my temples.
-Silk/satin pillowcases-I've known about them for years from nc but for some reason never bothered to get them until reading about them here.

Haven't bought any hairtoys because I don't like updos with my thin 3b curls, even when my hair was longer. The curls hide the details of the style, and the thinness just makes the whole thing look unimpressive.

I've only been a member for less than a month and I have already bought:
- metal-free elastics
- coconut oil (love it!)
- jojoba oil (also nice, but not as good as coconut)
- aloe vera gel (doesn't seem to make any difference, unless I'm using it wrong)
- SLS free shampoo and cone free conditioner (okay for a while but then my ends got very dry & tangled)
- many, many lemons for rinsing

Actually that doesn't sound like that much now that I'm listing it!

I have a question for Capybara - what sort of curlers do you use and how? Thanks!

Also, does anyone know where to buy a boar bristle brush in the Netherlands?

Many more hairsticks than I had before
knitting needles to make pins/forks out of
2 fakkares--work well so far
jojoba oil--better for my skin than hair it turns out
coconut oil--like shine serum, it's fantastic
sulfate free shampoo
aloe gel-keeps all those wispies in place perfectly
more conditioner than I've ever possessed at one time in my life

Of course this doesn't include the things I already had, like metal free elastics and a wide tooth comb, but you get the idea.

ETA: inexpensive BBB
satin pillowcase
claw clips
spin pins

I haven't bought too much yet, but I did start with a lot before I came. :)

So far I've gotten a Nightblooming hair brooch & a Chevelure spiral stick off of the swap board. :)
Also bought Garnier Triple Nutrition conditioner and I'm loving it. :)

I have changed my routine a bit. I've started sleeping with my hair up almost nightly (as opposed to a couple times a week.) I've also started finger combing most of the time instead of brushing or combing. And when I do use my comb I only use the wide side, mostly to tame my halo when I'm putting my hair up. :)
Even this little bit has seemed to calm my frizz a tad. Yeah!

Oh goodness.

Hair forks (too many to name, like maybe 15-20)
Hair sticks (too many to name, ummm like about 20 combo of singles and pairs)
Flexi-8s (like 9 or something)

Hair slides (about 7-8) <----this guy here is supposed to be the number 8, I don't know what is going on lol!
Caruso steam rollers
Coconut oil
Chagrin Valley shampoo bars
Organic ACV
wide toothed comb
Good hair day pins
bobby pins (like the 500 pack)
Amish pins
Sulphate free shampoos (many brands)
Cone free condish (I probably have like 10 bottles of the stuff stashed in the bathroom.)

Almost forgot, Nightblooming panacea.
And henna!!! How did I forget the henna!!

Yep, I blame all of that ^ on you guys lol. I am sure there is other stuff that I can't remember right now.

Ever since I started lurking around LHC in 2004 (I know, shame on me for lurking this long...:o) I've bought:

-various sulfate-free shampoos (at least 4)
-Chagrin Valley shampoo bars (can't remember how many)
-jojoba oil
-castor oil
-coconut oil
-sweet almond oil
-apricot kernel oil
-raspberry seed oil
-shea butter
-dozens of conditioners
-10 hairsticks
-amla powder
-shikakai powder
-at least 10 packs of kirby grips (one pack has 10, I think)
-wooden detangling comb
-3 seamless plastic combs
-3 boar bristle/nylon hairbrushes
-wooden hairbrush
-more apple cider vinegar than one would need just for cooking purposes
-various clips and scrunchies
-satin fabric for pillow cases I haven't made yet (it's been waiting for 5 years now...)
-hair cutting scissors

Things I've bought since joining LHC (today):
-finally caved in and placed an order for a Kent hairbrush today :)

various EOs(rosemary is my favorite!)
jojoba oil(I've been using coconut oil since prior to LHC, I like them both)
castor oil(I've only used it a couple times, not sure how I feel about it yet)
Monistat(not yet convinced, but I'm still trying)
MSM(It definitely helps my arthritis-yeah, at 20-but I haven't taken it long enough to notice growth)
LOTS of cone-free conditioners(current fav is yes to tomatoes volumizing)
a new pair of hair scissors(I had been using an old pair, and figured I should make sure they're sharp)
a denman's hair brush (its my favorite)

am I allowed to say things I plan on getting really soon?:
A three pronged Baerreis wooden hair fork
a tangle teaser(I saw these at a hair dressers in the mall the other day. I might go get one right now...or as soon as I gather the strength to pull myself away from the computer...)

ETA: I bought a tangle teaser and a three pronged fork today. I'm not sure how I feel about the TT yet, but I really love the fork.

Sulfate-free shampoo - Hair doesn't like it.
ACV - I really like this rinse, but I tend to have more flyaways when it's used.
Spin pins - LOVE these!

I got:

Wide tooth comb-it's alright
Almond oil-better for skin
olive oil-good on my ends
Shea butter(pure natural, unrefined)-great for my skin, awsome for feet, made my hair extremely greasy and took forever to wash out.
Sulfate free shampoo- some are not so good, some are great!
Coneless conditioner- very good especially -Tresemme naturals
Coconut oil- THE BEST!!!

Other things I'd like to try: castor oil, avocado oil, and argan oil.

This is going to be a very, very long list. :o I started experimenting pre-LHC when I found the longhair LJ community, which has a similar vibe as here, so I'm going back about six years with this. I've deliberately missed some hairtoys off the list, but besides that this is fairly comprehensive.

Products (conventional and otherwise):
- Coconut oil: Great all-round - pre-wash deep treatment, post-wash leave-in, mixed with shampoo or conditioner. Some brands are definitely better than others.
- Extra virgin olive oil: My ends love it, great pre-wash deep treatment.
- NightBlooming Triple Moon oil: Quite light, I use mine mostly as a light post-wash leave-in.
- NightBlooming panacea: Another good all-rounder. The smell is gorgeous too!
- Body Shop monoi oil: Not great; build-up, smell was too overpoweringly sweet-sickly for me. I think perhaps the Body Shop's blend is off, since I've heard mostly good reviews of this.
- Aloe vera gel (Aloe Pura Laboraties brand): I can't find perfectly pure stuff, it seems to be gold dust, but the version I have works well in SMTs. Haven't tried it as a leave-in yet.
- Rhassoul clay: Incredibly drying. I gave the rest away.
- Honey: I very rarely ever eat it, so I only really bought it for SMTs in which it works nicely.
- Apple cider vinegar: I use a rinse of this after every wash. I love that it brings out the red in my hair, and getting rid of hard water build-up is an added bonus.
- CV shampoo bars: Strangely these always seemed harsher on my hair than sulphate shampoo. (I don't understand the logic either, but my hair was not happy, despite reading about how to use them and several attempts.) Shame, they smelled lovely. My mother is happily using them up.
- Lush shampoo bars: Despite being sulphate-y, these were never that effective at cleansing for me, in soft or hard water. Over-priced for what they are, sometimes nice but always overpowering smells. The storage tin is impossible to open with wet hands.
- Giovanni shampoos/conditioners: I heard so many good things, I had to try them, but I couldn't maintain the cost of them per ml, and then they changed the formula anyway. Good, but not revolutionary enough to justify the price.
- Aubrey Organics shampoo & cream rinse for oily hair (I think the Fern one?): Natural pleasant smell, but quite watery; doesn't go very far, which considering the cost, isn't good. I like them, but couldn't afford them regularly.
- Burt's Bees shampoos/conditioners: Used these when I was in the US for a year, really liked them. Nice smells, higher price-wise but not disasterous.
- Dr Organic Pomegranate shampoo: Sulphate and 'cone-free; uses glucosides for cleansing. Unspectacular. Pleasant enough smell, but just not that effective.
- Pure Nuff Stuff: The normal conditioner just... best thing ever. The shampoo worked for me in soft water, but not in hard. The conditioner however is continually awesome. And considering it's nasties-free from a small company working out of the UK and making everything themselves, it's actually not bad price-wise per ml.
- Inecto Coconut conditioner: Meh. Cheap, but doesn't do anything for my hair at all. Used twice, then the bottle sat idle for a long time before I eventually threw it out.
- Sainsbury's Apple shampoo: Dirt cheap, works well for oil shampoo. Sulphate-y, but 'cone-free. No frills. They slightly altered the formula at the end of last year (and the design of the label with it), still works exactly the same for me.
- Sainsbury's Basics shampoo: Even more dirt cheap, but it smells very strongly and exactly like toilet cleaner. Which is one of the ways I'm using up the bottle, among other things. :p
- CHI Silk Infusion serum: Loved the 'coney slip, but it dried my ends to a crisp. The smell is an acquired taste, it's often likened to men's cologne, but it grew on me. Quite pricey; my nearly-full bottle will be appearing on the Swap Board when I get round to it.
- Fekkai Glossing Cream: A recent investment on the advice of a certain wise Piggy. ;) Love it so far; all that 'coney slip, but my ends seem to be holding up nicely. Not the cheapest, but I only need a one or two pea-sized amounts at once, so it'll last me a while. Quite a neutral smell, reminds me of skin cream; clean scent, quite light, with a tinge of green tea.

Toys:
- Flexi-8s: I have nine of these in various sizes, really love them. Fairly affordable, very pretty, and very useful.
- Tibetan barrettes on eBay: Very, very roughly finished tangle-creating monsters. Gorgeous to look at though, and affordable.
- Hair sticks: It's best if I don't go into all the makers, but my favourites are Timberstone Turnings for their amazing finish and elegant designs, Ketylo for the corkscrew shape and hold it provides, and Nightblooming for the quality and unique style.
- Hair forks: Again, favourites: Grahtoestudio for the unusual and organic shapes, and 60th street for the smooth and efficient designs.
- Titanic butterfly comb: Needed filing to smooth the edges, but remarkably pretty. I'm careful with the styles I wear it in, since it's liable to fall out otherwise, but it sits happily in the top of a low-started French braid or a combination braid.
- Ficcares: Excellent hold and elegant design, shame about the giant price tag. The Ficcarissimo is very under-rated, if anything it holds even more firmly than the Maximas.
- Amish pins (straight, not crinkled): Very strong, but easily stretched out, and they slipped out of my hair sadly.
- Bobby pins: X-pattern or no, they never hold for me.
- Goody spin pins: After much hype, I bought four of these. They're amazing. Whenever my bun's tail is beginning to untuck, I pop a couple of these in and it'll hold for the rest of the day. I need more!
- Metal-free hair ties: Much less damage, only wish I could find my favourite brand/colour of them on this side of the pond. (Scunci; thin bands, brown. Surprisingly scarce here unless you want a load of blond/white/grey/black with them.)

Other:
- Wooden combs: Much less static, I use it mostly on damp hair now. (I found mine on eBay many years ago. I've more recently tried a Body Shop one, but mine was incredibly rough and unfinished, so I went back to my eBay comb.)
- Wooden-quilled brush (Kent's WoodyHog): Same reduced static as above, I'm on my second one of these.
- Boar bristle brush: Wouldn't have even considered without LHC. Good for smoothing my hair without brushstrokes into updos on oily days, but besides that not a great success. Even on freshly detangled hair, it gives me tangles and damage if I use it down the length.
- Tangle Teezer: I bought one for my mother, she loves it.
- Hair scissors: I need another pair, mine are getting blunt, but S&D really helps my ends stay soft.
- Silk pillowcases: I didn't think cotton was that rough, but with these I notice so much less matting and tangles in my sleep braid the following morning. Whenever I travel now, I take one with me.
- Tichels and scarves: I have one tichel and two long rectangular scarves from Tznius (which has since gone defunct, apparently). I admit, I'm too much of a wimp to wear them in public, but my tichel especially, tied in 'the bun' style, is invaluable for cleaning and doing dirty jobs.

Two BBB's (the first one had a rubber base I didn't like - it made it too squishy)

Four pairs of hair scissors before I found some I liked

An Epstone/Crystalmood hairstick
A pair of Clair's plastic hair chopsticks that broke, and haven't been replaced

A silk pillowcase
Metal free hair bands

Things on the list to be bought soon:
Almond oil
Sunflower oil
Another flexi-8 or twelve.
A hair fork
A wooden paddle brush
another horn comb
spin pins

Okay so I've been "back" for a week and saved up a small stash of hair-money because I "needed" new hairtoys & returned looking for ideas & shopping inspiration, but it's already gone.

In the past week I've ordered:

* 3 bars of CV shampoo (but I just finished the last of my PLH & would have placed an order anyway... so this doesn't count, right?)
* a tangle teezer
* 2 barrettes from Barrette Baron
* a pair of Ravenslair hairsticks from the swap board here
* and I have a hair-sword on hold from Ravenslair's Etsy shop!

I'm sure glad I saved up a bit... I've blown my hair-budget for the next several months all in a single week!

Hmm let's see . . .

Almond oil - Excellent for pre-wash oiling, getting rid of frizz and substituting for honey in SMT's
Coconut oil - I have a feeling I use too much or just haven't got the hang of how to use it. Still trying though
Coconut milk - Bought in an attempt to distribute coconut oil in my hair more effectively. It works wonderfully as a pre-wash treatment.
Camellia oil - Makes my hair feel nice and strong and healthy but doesn't give as much shine as almond oil
Various Natralia Nourish S&C's - All were very much worth it. They're excellent products imo.
ACV - I wasn't very methodical in testing this and using it after products I was familiar with since I went a little crazy trying everything one after the other so still not sure but it seems to have good results.
Clear AVG - Bought for use in SMT's which work great for me.
Tangle teaser - Oh my goodness this is so useful ! I use it every day and it works great
Verawood comb with horn teeth - It's so pretty and smells nice. Kind of a pain that I can't use it on wet hair when I need to distribute conditioner. It usually gets forsaken for my tangle teaser these days
Hair toys, and lots of them - Including a nice glass octopus hairstick from EmergentGlassworks that I love <3, a collection of shiny hair forks from the local markets and little hair-friendly clips with scale maille flowers on them.

coconut milk- I buy the light kind and love them for mermaid soaks
castor oil- didn't like but I use it for other non-hair related things
100% shea butter- loved it in Fox's shea butter and love for my feet
pure aloe vera- love it in Kimberliliy's defrizz spray and SMTs
V05 conditioner- love for CWC, CO washing, and diluted for spray conditioner
Shea Moisture products- love the spray and the curl smoothie
Garnier Triple Nutrition deep conditioner- meh, it was ok
spray bottles and travel jars and squeeze bottles- for homemade concoctions and dilutions
scrunchies- haven't used in years but didn't realize they make smaller better ones now, love them
spin pins- love them, I got both the regular and the minis
hairsticks from Etsy- love, they make me treasure my long hair, sounds strange but it's true
flexi-8s- love them, a nicer alternative to claw clips
various cheaper hair toys like a fakkare, child size chopsticks, small claw clips, metal-free elastics, etc.

I may be forgetting some things, but more than anything it's the knowledge that I've gained on here that's been really valuable. I still want to purchase more things but I'm really trying to take it slow and not go crazy.

Oh man, I haven't gone too wild yet, but I have so many more things I WANT to buy...But I'm trying to convince myself one thing at a time...

-BBB (feels nice, but haven't seen any real health results)
-SlS shampoo/cone free conditioner natural set (...they're very ehhhhh. Need to try new ones)
-Jojoba oil, (makes my hair fluffy and soft!)
-hairpins, (the jury's still out)
-Hair fork (so pretty)
-Rat tail comb (I needed something to help me part! Should have gotten a bigger one)
-New purse brush (My old one had MOLD LINES)
-Hair clips (Needed something to keep my hair out of the way when I oiled!)
-Hair screws (Have experimented, but no real use yet)
-Tiny spritz bottle (Not sure why I didn't have one before...)

The list of "want" is about 10 miles long...hahaha cassia, about 5 oils, an army of hair sticks/forks CO, poo bars, different combs and brushes and scissors and EVERYTHING

I'm only going to list the things that I think were REALLY, REALLY WORTH buying, because the whole list is just too embarrassing.

8 - Ficcare Maximas (in hindsight, I could've just purchased the silver & gold. . . I wear those the most, by far)
3- hair forks by RasaOm (http://www.etsy.com/shop/rasaom?ref=ss_profile) on Etsy (these are waterproof & hold really, really well)
NightBlooming's (http://www.etsy.com/people/NightBlooming?ref=ls_profile) Triple Moon Anointing Oil on Etsy
NightBlooming's (http://www.etsy.com/people/NightBlooming?ref=ls_profile) Panacea's Hair Salve on Etsy
Goody Spin Pins
BAQ, laboratory certified Henna & Indigo (and various other powders for mixing) from Mehandi.com

ETA:
Tangle Teezer (from Sally's Beauty, also on Amazon.com. . . highly recommended)
Hair scissors
ACV (already used long, long before I ever read LHC, but highly recommended anyway)
Aloe (frequently used before LHC, but never on my hair until after LHC. . . it really works!)

Coconut Oil - love this stuff, I use it often as a pre-wash treatment
Avocado Oil - I use it the same way I use coconut oil, or sometimes just to smooth my hair when it's dry
Sweet Almond Oil - mostly for smoothing my hair, or sometimes on my skin
Apricot Kernel Oil - same as sweet almond oil
Jojoba Oil - have yet to use
Grapeseed Oil - have yet to use
Wooden comb - I cannot live without this thing, I use it to comb my hair all the time
ACV - I still haven't gotten the hang of ACV rinses, mostly because I'm lazy
Baking Soda - I use this to clarify every once in awhile
A LOT of Suave Naturals Conditioner - to wash out the oils

Bazinga
October 11th, 2011, 01:26 AM
* Boar Bristle Brush - while lurking on the forum I tried WO and this thing really helped stretch washes

* Tangle Teezer - for detangling, works really great on my hair

* wooden comb - for detangling, in case my Tangle Teezer turns out to destroy my hair as I have read in many reviews

* very good hair scissors - wanted to give S&D a try or even try to trim my own hair when it is a bit longer

* olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil, sunflower seed oil - mother works in a pharmacy, it's really hard to resist all those oils, they have them in all sorts in the laboratory, I was allowed to have a look once

* rooibos tea - I came across the rooibos-thread and couldn't resist trying it, both applying it on my hair and drinking it, makes my hair really shiny

* peanut butter - someone said that would increase hair growth, I never can't resist those things, must get used to the taste though, have never eaten that stuff in my life before

* socks for babies - I wanted to try a sock bun, but my socks seem to be too big for my hair

* brewer's yeast, linseed oil, linseed - from time to time they go into my food to increase hair growth, can't prove if it really works but I'm a believer :)

* apple cider vinegar - for rinses, I have yet to try this, keep forgetting to take it to my bathroom and end up being too lazy to get it once I'm under the shower

* demineralized water - again, mother works in a pharmacy so it's easy to come by this stuff, want to try rinses with it, we have kind of hard water around here, but same problem as with the ACV

That's all I can think about for now but I'll bet there is more. I'm trying to cut down on buying new stuff because I'm really out of money at the moment. :( But then there is a new thread on LHC and I want to try that stuff out, too.

I used to use jojoba oil, but have since brought and switched to coconut oil for both my hair and skin. I love it!! I might try jojoba again, though, just to see. I think in the beginning I was putting way too much in my hair :P

I've also brought a wonderful bamboo comb...I Love this!

I'd get more, but am planning exactly what it is I want, what I'll use, etc. The hair sticks and toys look like such fun! :D

Money's been tight since I started here, but...

wooden comb (not really a fan, sadly)
extremely wide-toothed seamless plastic comb (love!)
Suave Naturals coconut conditioner and shampoo (at a ratio of about 5:1, hehe)
V05 clarifying shampoo in kiwi
V05 conditioner (did NOT work for CO-washing, became shaving gel alternate)
coconut oil and milk (co-opted for cooking, hair never had a chance :( )
aloe vera gel
butterfly hair stick
barefootmaiden flower hairstick
sets of hair chopsticks from sally's (one set lost now, but they were cheap & didn't work well anyway)
duckbill clips

Maybe around $70 in 9 months. I am definitely on the "benign neglect" train. There's probably stuff out there that would work a miracle, but this lineup works pretty dern good for now. :D

-satin pillowcase
-coconut oil
-jojoba oil (bought for my face, but I've used in my hair a few times)
-BBB
-horn comb
-hair towel
-spin pins
-claw clips
-shower caps
-hair sticks/forks
-various shampoos and conditioners
-white vinegar (originally bought to clean my humidifier, but I occasionally do vinegar rinses with it)

I don't use all of these now, due to laziness, lol. There may be more that I'm forgetting. I'm hoping to get some clear aloe vera gel soon. :)

Let's see:

- TangleTeezer (I'm quite happy with it :)
- BBB (I lost the one my grandmother gave me, unfortunately)
- A mooncup (not hair-related, but LHC convinced me to give it a try)
- a gentle shampoo (Radical with horsetale, though I liked this poo earlier)
- no-cones condish (Shea butter and avocado - turend out to be a bit too heavy for my hair)
- aloe juice (hard to get the gel, so I just bought a bottle of juice)
- a pair of beautiful hairsticks from Swap Board (they're from the US, so I'm still waiting for them to arrive)

Today I should recieve:
- shea butter, unrefined (I wanted to buy it for a long time now, for my skin, but now, that I learned it can be used for hair as well I finally bought it)
- coconut oil
- a salt lamp - totally unrelated, but I always liked those and the shop I chose for the oil and the butter had them, so I just indulged myself :)

And I made a couple of hairsticks myself :)

- satin pillowcase
- hair net
- wooden comb
- vitamins (for Bargello's hair regimen)

more things to come :)

PS. I think it's fair to mention that a lot of things I did not have to buy - I have an abundance of oils from my soap/lotion making hobby. So I didn't buy them specifically for hair but I STARTED using them on hair since joining LHC - castor oil, argan oil, various other carrier and essential oils. Same goes for ACV, beer, honey, eggs. Always had them in the house, they just go on my head now :)

A disastrous experiment with a no poo washing method on bleached blonde hair brought me here. Now that I have my hair back to soft and silky I'm going back to benign neglect. I'm just lazy lol

BOUGHT ~

Tangle Teezer ( LOVE IT )
Wide tooth comb ( hate it )
Shampoo bars ( don't work on me, my son loves 'em tho )
Coconut oil ( miraculous )
Honey ( even better than coconut oil )
An updo pin ( $6.00 ugh )
Turbie Towel ( so far unimpressed, I bought it a week ago )
Cocoa powder as a dry shampoo ( LOVE IT )

UPCYCLED ~

My son's paintbrush into a funky hairstick :D
Various sticks from my yard (varnished) they are BEAUTIFUL and free!

I already had castor oil, which I cannot live without. I love love love it!

Even though I have BSL hair I have no idea how to put it up, its curly and I have spent a life with no clue how to take care of it, so, I guess my hair toy list would be short. I have learned how to wash it and shea butter is the bomb, but I have to say the very, very best thing I have bought and used since I came to LHC is my Twilight Henna! I love the color and I look so natural as a red head that a lot of people haven't even noticed I changed my hair.. lol. which is funny cause I was a bottle blonde for 20 yrs. But.. I will be investing in some hair toys as my hair gets longer. And will be turning to all of you for help and instructions.

Sanyia, where did you get your bone detangler comb? :-) Or anyone else, where did you get your bone or wooden wide tooth combs? i'm in need, been finger combing because my other option is a brush and that's a no-no... :)

I think it was a beauty supply store, but not Sally's. The might have it at Sally's, though. On the pouch it said that it was a seamless comb. It's the red one you see in this picture. I think I paid six dollars.

Wow, I haven't bought nearly as much as the OP, but I'll add my two cents.

-wide tooth detangling comb
-tangle teezer
-turbie twist
-coconut oil
-hair sticks
-cone free shampoo and conditioner
-(cheap) hair scissors
-honey and aloe gel (for SMTs)

aaand... honestly I think that's it.
(also, this is all stuff I've bought since lurking. I only just joined, obviously)

Hair related items bought:

Coconut oil - So so. I use it sometimes.
SLS free shampoo - I don't use much shampoo anymore.
Cone free conditioner - Rarely use conditioner now that I use shampoo bars.
Widetooth comb - I love it, but need a better quality one.
BBB - Eh, it's alright sometimes.
Chopsticks that I need to shorten for hairsticks - Haven't used. Hair too short.
Castor oil - Love it.
Shampoo bars - LOVE. Need to tweak my methods for best results.
ACV - With the shampoo bars? Awesome.
Rooibos tea - LOVE. Just need to remember to use it more.
Satin pillowcase - Didn't notice any difference, stopped using.
Curl defining cream - Love this stuff so far. Didn't know I could even get wurls until I grew this long.
Tangle teezer - Love it.
MSM - Seems to help, when I remember to take it.

This doesn't include the non-hair related items LHC has caused me to buy. Aiiiii. I haven't even ventured into the realm of hairtoys yet.

What non hair-related items are these?
Also, you just reminded me that I also bought a bbb. Obviously I don't use it very often.

I've always been into oils. My skin used to be very sensitive before I found out I was anemic, so natural oils were the way to go.
But since LHC I've bought:
-Tangle Teezer
-Tea specifically for tea rinses
-ACV
-Silk pillowcase
-Scrunchies
-Unrefined coconut oil (used to buy refined pre-lhc)
That's about it... :hmm:

Hmm.. Too much time spent in the off topic section. :D

A brush for dry brushing, other oils for OCM, an epilator (always wanted one but was finally convinced).. Started getting into BPAL and I have samples on the way. Loose leaf tea to drink. Other natural skin related goodies. I can't think of anything else right now.

LHC has made me more interested in taking care of myself as naturally as possible, and I do like to experiment. :p I think I qualify for easily enabled.

Lol, I started making a list, but got a tad embarrassed by the length of it :o
So instead I'll say that the best LHC-inspired purchase I've made was Shea Butter. Funnily, I'm so happy about it because it's been amazing for my skin (eczema), but horrible for my hair :wigtongue

I'd have to say ive bought A RIDICULOUS amount of oils and products i thought would work!! most of the pure oils seem to have worked out for me though so thats good

ive purchased some sort of "super gro" which was just packed with nasty mineral oil.
a few years back i got "jojoba oil" that didnt even have jojoba on the ingredients list (lol).

a huge variety of different conditioners that would work for me, which i think is never ending because i still havent found something that i particularly even like. so i buy something different every time i need more conditioner :P

one thing i havent gotten yet is hair toys. my hair has never even been long enough to do anything cool with it. i really want hair chopsticks but i cant find them in ANY store, which is stupid because i remember seeing a ton of them not too long ago. i should just order online where they have very pretty ones.
the list goes on...

I am thinking I should add an addition onto my house and dub it my Hair Toy Museum. Yep. I love those things. So addicted.
