Hi all!! I have been making my own avocado deep treatment.. and WOW, it makes my hair silky smooth, it feels soooo nourished!! It looks so shiny and healthy!!! I use a ripe avocado, mash it good and add some evoo. Honestly...this is by far the best deep treatment I have ever used!! I don't measure the evoo, I just dump and mix until I get the consistency I want!! Oh, I have tried it on my face but it caused breakouts, not good for oily skin!!!! Just make sure you mash or blend it well, If you don't then you will end up with a mixture full of green clumps, yuck!! I leave it on for an hour!! Works like magic for me!! :magic:

Yup I've done this a few times now and yes you do have to mash that stuff up good because you will have chunks in the hair :) my bf calls me salad head when I do this but I too put EVOO and a couple other things in there as well, I put a plastic bag on my head and use the dryer for a bit and my hair is very soft and shiny!

How do you apply avocado/oil "mush" to your hair?
Wet/dry? And how long do you keep it in?
I have the ingredients at home and I'm itching to do it! :D
Thanks in advance.

Ugh, me too.

Sometimes I'm lucky enough to get them reduced in the supermarket if they are past their best. Maybe I'll pick up a spare one of two if I seee them in that state again. They are something horrible like almost a pound each! I can buy a bag of apples for less.

Is it most beneficial to the scalp or the length, since I might have to choose one of the other?

Im going to make this the next thing i do too.

Dont throw out the avocado skin.....i found a skin moisturising and exfoliating treatment in a book....when you have used the inside of the avocado, rub the inside of it on the skin on your face, then use the other side to exfoliate.

:flower: Some tips for your treatment!!!!

I would recommend putting avocado in blender, add olive oil, use on wet or dry hair, cover head with plastic wrap, leave on for 1 hour. Wash hair as usual!! I left it on for an hour and a half!!!

Avocados are one of the few things that my hair really loves. I usually mix it in a blender. I start by putting a little bit of olive oil in the bottom of the blender. I then add a couple of tablespoons of mayo. To that, I will add an entire avocado. I like to blend it until looks like some sort of green cream. In order to get it creamy, the avocado MUST BE ripe!!! This weird mix leaves my hair feeling so soft! :)

just wanted to check back in after trying Honeyblonde's Avocado mask to say that this is the most moisturizing treatment i've ever put on my hair (and i've become a regular SMTer). i'm going to start using this once a week to soften my hair. the mashed up avocado + EVOO goes on smooth and thick. i strongly recommend wrapping it, as i just sat around watching tv, and it took awhile and a lot of warm water to rinse thoroughly. i don't think this would have been a problem at all had i wrapped. i also just hand whipped it (i'm living out of my suitcase here in France), and perhaps using a blender or hand mixer would be best. i had a few left over lumps, after my oil poo. they disappeared on their own. i also put it directly on my skin with great results! i left it on my face and neck for about 30 min (half the time i left it on my hair). FYI my skin is naturally very dry. it is now certain that no amount of oil (not even EVOO +avocado) is going to break me out! lol

all in all i just want to add that as someone with very dry (naturally) hair and skin this treatment was really beneficial for both my hair and skin. it is very thick and moisturizing. my hair tends to drink moisture constantly so this was perfect. just one last thing, i grabbed the softest oldest looking avocado in the basket and it worked well. i guess the squishier the better :p

hi, I'm from Mexico, here the Kilo (half of a lb) of avocado is in $23 pesos, that is like 2 dollars,

and even in the supermarket sell avocado oil extra virgin,,
http://www.elpalaciodehierro.com.mx/wcsstore/PH/media/catalogo/Gourmet/16758967P/n3_16758967P.jpg
is a little expensive, the bottle of 250ml cost $36pesos, is like $3 - $3.5 dollars,, so my hair is happy :)

I'm not sure if I've posted before... although I've been here for years (and on the old site) reading, reading reading.

The avocado thing is literally one of the simplest and best hair treatments out there for me; my hair LOVES it. Mashed ripe avocado and EVOO is all I use, I wrap it in plastic wrap for 1/2 hour, rinse REALLY well, wash with a shampoo bar (or lather the scalp and squeeze through if using a commercial shampoo, which I did last time), and rinse some more. In the winter I use a tiny bit of cones-containing conditioner on the very bottom of my ends. ACV rinse.

That's it, but really does yield the nicest immediate results I've seen. I've been doing this for a long time, and it doesn't stop working.

I used the Avocado/Evoo-treatment last night, and it made my hair so soft, silky and tangle free!!:cheese: I couldn`t keep my hands off my hair:D I bought two more avocados today so I`ll have a ripe one at hand for my next avocado/evoo treatment. Do you think I could use this mix every week or should it not be used to often? I have some dry ends that really loves moisture and this treatment gave me awsome results:)

I apply pure avocado or mix it with hemp oil.
To purée avocado I squash it through a sieve. It must be ripe though.

Glad you had such good results. I've experimented with avocados many, many times and I think not leaving it on for too long works the best. Too long gives you greasy, stiff hair but an hour to two hours gives perfect results. Also putting the avocados in the blender gives it a good consistency for even coverage.

just wanted to check back in, i have done 2 avocado treatments this past month (adding honey, organic avocado oil, and a few drops of tea tree EO) and my hair looks and feels softer and healthier. in fact i don't think i'll need to deep condition for quite awhile. i'm so happy with this treatment. it really has improved the overall condition of my hair. my hair is no chem./natural/virgin yet it can get quite dry, so this has been VERY beneficial. thanks honeyblonde!

Luna12345: i am living out of a suitcase and don't have a blender so i bought an overripe squishy avocado and mixed/whipped with a fork for awhile. sure there were a few clumpy pieces, but all in all it worked great!

Make sure the avocado is really ripe, otherwise it doesn't work as well. :) And I prefer a handmixer to make it all nice and gooey

I'm sitting with my hair covered up in green goo while typing this :) All I did was mash a very ripe avocado through a mesh collander (twice), and added some aloe vera extrakt. I put it on damp hair and covered it with cling film and a towel to keep warm and to keep it from drying.

I have tried putting avocado in my hair before, but that was years ago, before I LHC and before I was into natural haircare. I was using cones, and doing all sorts of bad things to my hair, and my hair didn't really like oils. But now,, since I've started using oils on a more regular basis, I thougt about trying avocado again. This thread really inspired me!

I'll let you know what I think of the results.

Now it's official; my hair does not like avocado. So I won't be needing to spend any money on a bottle of the oil.
My hair just ended up being both super-oily (even though I washed it out with my Rhassoul, which usually get rid of both coconut- and EVOO, no problem) and crunchy at the same time. Weird.
But I'm still happy for all of you that has had success with the avocado mask. I'll just stick to my SMT :)

I did an mashed avocado and olive oil treatment today and am really happy with the results. It made my dry, frizzy hair really soft, thick, and even a little bit glossy. SMT's have been making my hair more frizzy and flyaway lately; I suspect it's because we've had damp and rainy weather here for the last couple of weeks.

I also got a sample of avocado oil from Nightblooming that I'm looking forward to trying.

Don't worry, I didn't do an avocado treatment with the honey anymore. I bought coconut cream to add instead :)

I was wondering, if you heat the honey to stop the peroxide, don't you also kill all the vitamins and such? Especially in the microwave, my doctor said it's been proven that it ruins a lot of essential amino acids and vitamins in your food.

Anyway, I'm going to try another avocado mask and when my hair likes it in its new state (damaged and such), I'm going to buy avocado oil :)

That's what I thought too, that's why I bought raw honey but what I didn't realize was that I was unintentionally bleaching my hair with raw honey in SMTs! I have been suspecting it for a while because my hair seems to be getting lighter to the point where people commented on it and my hair texture seems different too, but I couldn't be sure until you talked about damage from honey lightening because everyone else seemed to have such good results from honey.

It was folks in the honey lightening thread who said that heating honey in microwave stops the peroxide but I don't know if the heat affects the effectiveness of honey in SMT. Just to add though, I love avocado oil as much as EVOO and it smells great!

I cut the avocado in half and rub the whole thing through the length of my hair, like I'm combing it with the avocado, until it's all coated with the thick paste... I found this really reduces clumps. It washes out pretty easy and leaves my chemically treated hair feeling much softer.

I was so excited to try this. It's a public holiday today so my 12 year old and I decided to use this treatment on our past waist-length hair. I used a very ripe avocado, EVOO and a squirt of honey, wizzed it up with my handblender and we slopped it on our heads. Wrapped in clingfilm, with a heatpack on top of that we sat around for an hour and finally washed it out.

My first clue that this wasn't going to work for me was that when I put it on my hair felt stiff, not soft but I thought that it might improve with time. On washing it out, I found my hair was still stiff. I washed and conditioned as normal, put my usual leave-in in and brushed it out for drying. My daughter did the same and came out of her room saying "my hair feels like I've been swimming in a chlorine pool!". I knew right then and there that it wasn't fur us and quickly whipped up an SMT remembering that I'd read somewhere before that you need to follow up a protein treatment with a moisture treatment.

So here I sit for the second hour with more treatment on my hair, actually waiting for time to pass so I can start the 3 hour airdrying process on a cold and rainy day. UGH!

I knew right then and there that it wasn't fur us and quickly whipped up an SMT remembering that I'd read somewhere before that you need to follow up a protein treatment with a moisture treatment.
How wonderful that you knew your hair wasn't right and were able to take care of the problem right away! How's your hair now?

I loved it as soon as I began painting it on. It felt so luxurious, like a spa treatment! It left my dry hair feeling smooth and thick. Thanks so much for the tip, I love it!

I just went a little crazy and mixed an avocado ++ treatment.
It was made of

2 avocados
2 eggs
1 can of coconut milk
4 spoons honey

I mixed everything and left it on my hair for 1 hour. I washed it out and finished with an ACV rinse.
I am now letting my hair dry.

Right after washing it out I wasn't too excited about how my hair felt, because I had much more exciting results from a honey/conditioner treatment a while ago. My hair felt SO buttery-soft after that one that I was worried it might just slip out ;)
This treatment did not give me that effect, but I was going for a combined moisture-protein treatment and wanted to see if this a mixture that does this.

I will report back once my hair is dry :)

Well, I am trying to switch from shampoo/conditioner to baking soda washes/acv-rinses right now and I've read that sometimes hair gets too dry without the conditioner. So I decided to do some sort of moisture treatment every two weeks.
Other than that, I would do one when I notice my end feel crunchy or look weird

So about my avocado-treament: My hair is still pretty oily and it is pretty hard to wash out without shampoo. I've tried to wash it out with baking soda first, then i used a shampoo bar, but didn't want to use it on the ends. So now my ends are still oily and I might have to use soap to get it out.
Maybe next time I won't leave it on for an hour...

I've started using avocado oil on my hair the night before I shower, and my hair likes it even better than coconut oil! It's more expensive though... I still use the coconut oil as my every day oil on my ends, because I feel like the avocado oil is a bit thick.

I tried this last night and loved it really made my hair soft and shiny. I wouldn't leave it on longer than 30 minutes because my hair started to get stiff I probably only needed half an avocado as my hair is short but I used the whole one. Will definitely do it again!

Next time I'm trying my old recipe but instead of the honey I'm going to use corn syrup :)

To darken up instead of honey use Molasses as in the carmal treatments :)

I wish I lived somewhere that avocadoes were cheap enough to mash into your hair instead of buy as a rare special treat.

Agreed. I can't quite bring myself to put it in my hair. Too expensive and too delicious. :p

This sounds kind of fun. Avocados are kind of expensive here, though, so I don't know if I'll try this any time soon. I'll add it to my list of potentially interesting hair treatments that I want to try some day.

I had such high hopes for this one...but it didn't work out very well for me. I'm not sure if it was the avocado or the EVOO that my hair didn't like. I haven't tried either of them before. I decided to puree the mixture (1 avocado + 1/8 cup EVOO) and apply it to damp hair. I didn't have enough to fully saturate my hair, but I think I covered it pretty well. I then put a plastic bag over it and wrapped it in a towel. I left it on an hour, rinsed really well, and then applied my Suave coconut conditioner. I used a bunch of conditioner, since I have read that EVOO can sometimes be a real pain to wash out. I left it on for 15 minutes, rinsed well again, then washed twice with my shampoo bar. I went ahead and did an ACV rinse and followed it up with more coconut conditioner. My hair isn't horrible or anything, but the texture is a little rougher than it was before doing the treatment. I was expecting silky smooth soft hair. Oh well...trial and error. Not everything works for everyone. I might try again someday and apply to dry hair instead to see if it makes a difference.

So, what about overripe avocados? Would they work? We have this great place in town that sells too-ripe produce for 99 cents a bag. The other day they had one with three avocados in it.

And maybe it's been asked before, but I didn't see it...does it matter what kind of avocado (hass or otherwise?)

As long as I mix a small teaspoon of EVOO with a conditioner & almond oil, my hair doesn't end up greasy. But now I'd like to experiment with avocado in my hair potion. So I am wondering if the convenience avocado packages found in supermarkets are as good as the fresh avocado? Kind of amazing about all the "foods" in my kitchen dedicated to hair! Here's to guacamole in my hair! :-D

So, having little experience with avocado, I am asking you lovely people if I could I mix up a huge batch and freeze it successfully. Would it unfreeze OK (if maybe a little black?)

Up until reading your post, linnepinne, I was considering trying this, envisioning silky soft flowing hair. But since my hair is naturally oily already, I guess I'll just stick to eating my avocados.;)

Hi!

So, a little over a month ago I made a moisture hair mask out of
1 ripe avacado
1 can coconut milk
3-4 TBS honey

Mashed by hand until a smooth, creamy consistency and used it on my friend's hair while mine had my first henna treatment in it. She needed to use shampoo to get it out, but the results were amazing!

I froze the leftovers (it was a large batch!) and last week thawed it in the fridge for two days and used it on myself. The results: AMAZING! My hair was sooooo soft and silky smooth and shiny, I could barely believe it. It's going to be a regular part of my routine.

I just made up my mix of:

1.75 Avocados (gotta have some to eat :p)
1 can Coconut Milk
2 T Honey (approx)

Did it in the blender to make sure to get out all the lumps. 1 avocado seemed to make the mixture too thin, hence the .75. I'm about to wash my hair in a little bit. Then I'll saturate it with the mix, wrap it in plastic and leave it on for an hour. I may even apply some heat. I'll let you know the results. Pray they are good. :)

I mashed up half a really ripe avocado and applied to damp hair from the ears down. I wrapped it in a plastic bag and left it for an hour before I rinsed it with water. The results were not spectacular. I didn't see any phenomenal changes. Perhaps frizziness was cut down a tiny bit but that was about it. I was expecting so much more! :(

Who wants the rest of my mix? I slathered the stuff all over my hair, wrapped my hair around my head, covered it all in plastic. Then I put my blow dryer cap on for a half hour (lots of mix dripping down my neck ), then left it on another half hour. I rinsed it out, shampooed then used my WEN Conditioning cleanser 'cause my hair felt tangly/dry even while soaking wet in the shower. I had a harder time than usual getting the tangles out of my hair and lost more hair than usual in combing them out. I did a light Coconut Oiling like I usually do. It is now dry and all I can say is, YUCK! It's somewhat frizzy and there are areas that look greasy or dirty but don't feel that way. I wish now that I hadn't put the honey in the mix 'cause I think I could make a great, albeit hi calorie, salad dressing out of the remaining mix. Maybe I'll try adding some EVOO next time and see if that does any better. I've got too much $ in this batch to just toss it. Any ideas? :odid

ETA: Also did an ACV rinse.

pixxiestix, thank you again for sharing the information about freezing. I'm so glad to hear it works just fine!

In other news, I've got 5 bags of mashed up avocado and evoo in my freezer, but now I'm a little nervous to try it! I can't see any common denominator in hair types between the people who have reported less than success. Would there be an issue with protein, maybe?

I mixed one mashed avocado, a tsb honey, tsb coconut oil, and prob 1/4 cup olive oil in the blender,
put my hair in a high pony tail. Saturated the length then applied thin covering the rest of the hair. I left on for 2 hours. Was so soft and creamy putting it on.
As I am washing it out I discovered tangles. So I shampooed roots area and conditioned length area (garnier fructis) . When I got out I braided my hair in pigtails and slept on it about 5 hours.
This morning my hair I undid the braids and my hair is super soft and smells yummy, however, it still looks damp so I will report back once dry... if it doesnt dry then I will think this mask is too oily for my hair type.
Forgot to add: I also put this on my face for a mask and left for an hour, suprisingly all my small blemishes have VANISHED! For a face mask it is amazing :)

What type of hair does your friend have?

Her hair is fine, stick straight, mostly virgin, and non porous.

My hair is thick, straight/maybe a wave when it's long (I can't remember! *cries*) and has some chemical damage from bleaching before putting in Henna.

My fiance's hair is slightly less thick, stick straight, virgin and like my friend, in pretty darn good condition.

We all had great results, so I don't know what makes it work for some people and not for others.

Well, I'm going to try my first avocado treatment tomorrow afternoon. The 2 avocados we have are about to go bad and I probably only need about half an avocado, but oh well:p. Now I don't know any recipes or how long it's supposed to sit, but that's ok. I'm going to try and make my own using a table spoon of honey mashed up with the avocados and have it in there for 3 hours if i can. I'm a couple days before my wash so I can let the affects of the treatment sit with me for a while after rinsing it out. We'll see what happens! ETA: I blended up the mix with a blender - hand mixing wasn't sufficient. I applied it thinly and left it on for probably an hour or two (I didn't look at the clock :o), then WO-washed well afterwards and slept with it in a turbie. I didn't expect my hair to be completely oil-free and it wasn't, but there was less extra oil than I was expecting. I don't mind it feeling like this... I don't really wear my hair down much anyway and the oils are making braiding easy. The shine is making the braids look great too.

I froze the remaining mix in small baggies. We'll see how these treatments go after defrosting.

Oh no! My water is soft, too, and I liked the treatment so I guess this theory's not universal! :p

I'd say it's probably more specific to hair types, wash routines and also expectations. I'm sure some wouldn't be happy with the amount of oil that was left in my hair.

:magic:

i used to do various avocado treatments pre-lhc loved the reslt but was a bear to get out. im sure i did something wrong lol i could improve on it now but i just dont like the mess but im dying to try an avocado oil deep treat!

Isnt avocado a protein? I could be wrong so sorry if I am!:p But if it is it may react badly to hair that doesnt like protein.

I've tried avocado in deep treatments a few times and it just didn't work for me :(

I guess I'll have to stick to eating my avocados, yummmmm :p

Now I want an avocado. :p But for my hair I would rather have avocado oil, because I have really bad experience with putting fresh fruits and such in my hair. ;)
