Hello all, I have a question about updos for those with curly hair. Since it seems a lot of us have layers, how does everyone else go about getting their hair into an updo? Also, how do you make it look sleek? Do you put it up while wet? Does it hold the entire day? Does it frizz out on you? What kinds of tools and hair toys do you use? I have been obsessing a bit too much over mine lately and I just want to be able to get it up and out of the way so I think about it less!

TIA!

I don't do "sleek"

My updo of choice is a peacock twist, which lets me show off all my curls and gets it out of my face :)

A gibson tuck is also a great look that's a little more professional and sleek-er.

Thanks! I guess most of the updos I see are sleek because it's people with straighter hair, so I just assume everyone does the same. But I would love to find curly friendly updos. I am going to look these up now.

I would like to add that I have lots of layers so updos are super hard for me right now. They are about to shoulder length. Plus I'm growing out fringe that is about mouth level.

I love updos with curls- they seem so much softer than tight straight updos. The texture can be helpful too- less slippery.

I do, too. The problem is that the individual curls fall out so much. Especially with the fringe. It lays to the side very nicely, but I have no luck getting it back once the curls have formed.

My hair is virtually the twin to yours, I mostly braid now. You may check my 'do album. Lace braids keep layers more or less at bay (though some ends slide off or stick up). Wetting hands and using gel helps, too. My curl pattern is not persistent so usually after thorough braiding or whatever I do, my hair gets just wavy with curls at the very tips and some frizz all about :)

To do "sleek" I detangle with a Tangle Teezer and add some oil or something else with smoothing powers (Panacea or aloe vera, etc.).

My fave hairtoy is a stick, because I can put ALL of my hair up in under ten seconds.
