Hi :)

I am very interested in covering my hair in scarves.

I adore the Hijab but I am not that confident right now nor am I ready to cover my neck. I think I prefer the Hijab because it does not look as though you are "recovering" which may occur with some head scarves.

Anyone know of any fantastic styles for wearing your hair in a scarf?
I exhausted the search for information but do not feel satisfied with what I have found.

I guess I am really lazy and love the look of different fabrics against the eyes but I don't have a clue how to make it look good or sophisticated or sexy.

Thanks so much.

I'm interested in this information too! I love the idea of hair scarves, but I have no idea how to wear one.

I like to do a four strand braid with a scarf as two of the pieces and my hair as the other two. Its more protective than a regular braid and I think its really pretty. Sometimes I wrap my infinity scarf twice around my neck and then pull one of the wraps up to cover my head and ears when its cold outside. I think thats a really cute look too. That way if I get self conscious about wearing a scarf on my head I can just pull it back down around my neck.

This is what I mean: http://loveisallyouknit.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/infinity-scarf-51.jpg

Check out You Tube, theres lots about the different ways to tie scarves, for those with hair and those with no hair (Alopecians/Chemo patients etc). They discuss what ones to buy, how to tie them, how to layer them its amazing.

Iv been using scarves for years (Alopecian) and Iv learnt a lot from there.

I used a cotton saronge to use on my head yesterday, it looked great:

Iv also used the wrap method, which I found hard to tie at the back, but is really warm.

I am actually really happy to hear that someone else likes what people can do with the hijab but (just like me) isn't quite ready for that step. As a practicing muslim, I do hope to someday have the guts to wear one without feeling like I am being unfairly judged but for the time being, I am trying to find out other ways to cover (and protect) my hair.

I've found that YouTube has lots of videos on braiding, scraves and different styles of hijab. Some people prefer more or a "pinup" style and then there's always culturally-influenced head coverings. I'm currently trying to work up the courage to try out African-style head wrappings! I love how they can look feminine and sophisticated.

If I find anything specific, I will try to post up some ideas.

OwlAthena, I will have to give your braid idea a try. Hopefully I won't be all thumbs.

I usually use my scarves to accent a ponytail, around existing support, and I've used them at the tail of a braid. I like the oblong ones. You can also fold it up and tie it like a headband.

There are several threads on covering. This (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/search.php?searchid=2661526) is the result using a thread title search on the word covering. There are some threads that didn't turn up. Try different search terms for more.

Also look at this blog (http://thestyleunderground.typepad.com/blog/).

I wear head coverings all the time now, as my hair has gotten longer and longer and longer! It's much easier to work with my hair up and covered. Right now, I've stuck with the pre tied bandana style, they are both casual and colorful. I allow a little bit of my forehead hair to show to soften the look. I've received many compliments when wearing them . . . not my objective, but it is nice not to be too conspicuous. I've even referred some of my customers to this web site . . .

The other site I like is Modestworld. Their shipping costs are a bit high but the cotton snoods(called cotton simplicity) I've purchased are of the highest quality(which sounds silly but I wear these around the house all the time and they should have fallen apart by now!) I also purchased a beret and I can not believe how beautiful it is. I wish they had more of the cotton snoods but their supplies of items comes and goes.
