Hey everyone,
So after lurking around the forums for a month or so and making a few posts here and there, I've just noticed that I never actually introduced myself and thought I should change that.
My name is Gina, I'm 19 years old, live in the UK and I miss having long(ish) hair!
Ever since I was around 7 or 8 I've wanted to have really long hair, really long. However, my hair was around 2c at the time (stretched out from around 3b when I was a toddler) and neither my mother or I (who has 1a, fine hair) never knew how to look after it and subsequently, it was a terrible knotty mess that never grew past mid-back length at it's longest. I always wanted dead straight hair as I found my curly hair unmanageable and didn't know what to do with it. When I was around 13 I discovered hair straighteners and eventually ended up straightening my hair on a daily basis. Still, not knowing how to look after my hair I caused horrible damage which resulted in me cutting it all off into a badly styled cut at around 14. I can't really remember my exact age as I've tried to block it out of my memory. Anyway, I took relatively good care of it until I started bleaching and dying it at 16/17. I kept doing this on a semi-regular basis and my hair wasn't in a terrible condition for it until I decided I wanted to change from my usual purple dye to two different shades of blue. Big disaster. I can't remember the hair dye brand now but it turned out a disgusting mixture of green and turquoise, half of which didn't even take to my hair so I had a bit of blonde in there too from where I had just bleached it. As you can imagine, it was hideous. So, desperate not to dye my hair black (a colour I wasn't a fan of at the time) I used 3 bottles of bleach to get it out in one night.
Ouch..
After that I had to cut my just past APL hair to just above my collar bone and most of what was left was still terribly damaged and split. If I remember correctly, this was in June 2009. Since then I've been trying to grow out the damage and it has certainly been a long, painful process. I tried to keep it dyed red until around September 2009, where I just gave up and dyed it back to my natural brown colour. Now, on February 1st, 2011 my hair is barely a few cm past my collar bone and has very little damage left (about a cm or 2 in some places).
I joined LHC in December 2010 and from a bit of lurking, I've learnt a lot about my hair and ways to look after it. I really want to accomplish my desire of having long hair and hopefully I will now be able to achieve that and keep it healthy too. My hair at the moment (I think) is around 1c/2a, but I haven't done a no-product wash to really find out. Now that I'm a little older, I really wish I had my ringlets back from when I was very young but I don't think it is possible anymore. I'm not sure whether it's due to the amount of damage I've caused over the years or general hormorne changes that my curls have slowly been disappearing. However, just having happy, healthy hair will be good enough for me after all of the damage I've caused in the past.
Tomorrow I will be doing a no product wash, leave my hair air dry and then use cassia for the first time. I hope it turns out well.
Okay, so, here I am and I can't wait to hopefully join you all in long hair heaven.
