View Full Version : Dark-ness: brown to black

I've noticed some blonde's thread so why not create dark-haired's one:p

Having dark hair has some advantages like much more visible shine but also disadvantages like much more visible frizz, splits, roots (if coloured) etc. Plus I know that few of us have some special feelings for black (including me :inlove:)

So please share your tips to increase gloss, enhance shade, add silkness. If you dye it - in what shade? - Eg black can be achived with many ways: dark brown, blue-black, violet-black, pitch-black & so on & so for. If you use some natural method - share! Also what do you like the best in your hair?

Hope you like the idea

first off - YAY for dark hair:D:D I dye my hair from blonde to black, just black sometimes i'll go for a purple black or a blue black but mostly i like black.

I love how shiney it goes in the sun and how somehow, don't ask me how it seems to love being dyed, it goes shinier and softer afterwards (although i do get headaches alot after dying)

i gain more shine with coconut oil (or olive oil) having roots bothers me and damage that shows up more is a pain, but at least i can keep it healthier by seeing it and cutting it off :D:D

I love my black hair and would never go any other colour, YAY black hair :cheese:

I am natural brunette. My hair can look black at times, but in the sun it shows reddish tints. It now also has some natural silver highlights!

I use brilliant brunette shampoo and conditioner and jojoba oil. The photo shows how long my hair was a few months ago. Now that it is a bit longer I can wear it up all the time which is wonderful! :)

I love being a brunette and would never dye my hair!

Visible splits can be a good thing because if you can easily see them, you can snip them off. ;)

I have dark brown hair and I love it! :heartbeat You're right about the shine! And I like the contrast of light skin and dark hair.

Great idea Eirinn :)

My hair is not black but it is a very dark chocolate-auburn brown (the color in my siggy pic is due to the light of the camera flash). I have about 50% of whites on top of my head and I’ve been dying them auburn for years. Last year I switched to henna and soon I started to use indigo in a two-step henna/indigo process. The contrast between the orange roots I got with only henna and the dark auburn of the rest of my hair is too much for me. Now I apply henna and then about 75%-25% indigo/cassia on my roots and length and the result is a very nice dark brown. From time to time, I use chemical dye in my roots only when I’m tired of the whole henna/indigo process.

Aside from henna/indigo/cassia, I CO twice a week and CWC once a week. If I consider it necessary, I wash more often with shampoo bars or herbs. I use oils daily, 3 or 4 drops in my previously damped length and a few more in my ends. I’m using Triple Moon Hair Anointing Oil from Nightblooming’s http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=11761139 and the results are being really great.

I agree with you about the frizz, split ends and roots showing more in dark hair but there is nothing more spectacular than a dark shiny long mane IMO :D .

Oh I totally agree with all the above! I can't go completely black but oftentimes a really dark brown will look black on me, and I always go cool toned with some red in it.

Here's another benefit, for those of us who are pale skinned and dark eyed too....the contrast between my skin tone and my eye and hair color means that I can play with makeup colors more than most people can. I can do very dark lips and eyes on a daily basis, and I LOVE playing with color! :)

After an alarming fade to pink, orange, blonde, brown and blue-grey on my recently dyed and colourstripped bright red hair, I have had to embrace my inner brunette. I'm naturally dark brown and last night I applied Garnier Nutrisse Cocoa Brown hairdye. It's almost but not quite black because I had to do 2 applications (the pink kept showing through). I dont have any pics yet.

I'll be going back to my old brunette routine: John Frieda Brilliant Brunette shampoo and condish with cones. I get great shine from BB. I'm also interested in checking out Lush Caca Brun and Marron henna, mixed - to see if I can get good conditioning and growth from that. I'm going back to using Moonchaser's oil too.

Oddly my hair looks much shinier after the Nutrisse than it has done at all since the red was put on. I loved the red but the fade was incredible and the way it went multi-colour - no way!! So it's back to brown for me.

I have dark brown hair that looks almost black most of the time.
The sunlight brings out a few reddish highlights. I love my hair color. Now, I'm trying to find a routine to bring out it's shine.

I love having dark brown hair too, one day I may consider hennindigo to get it black, but I don't know if I am willing to give up my natural colour. I tend to use conditioner that has henna extract in it, I have natural red in my hair anyhow (when the sun shines through it) so I don't know if the conditioner is making my hair more coppery or not. I get good shine from it though.

Natural dark brunette here. I haven't put a stich of color in my hair in over 3 years. I'm a mom to two toddlers so I just haven't had the time or care to maintain, let alone think of coloring my hair. I have been blondle before but it looks odd on me. I would like to do an all over, a bit warmer chocolate color in the future as I am finding a few grays here and there. I have found my hair photographs shiny when I put product in it (mousse, hairspray).

I have hair that most call black, but it's really very dark brown. It also turns red on the ends if it's long enough. I've been other colors, but I feel most comfortable natural. Since my hair's straight, I am shiney. I'd say my best shine tip is to avoid perms, bleach, and heat styling (duh).

You forgot another thing--others can't tell as much when you need a wash.

I am an autumn, even though my hair's almost black, because it has red undertones, my eyes are golden brown, and my skin is light golden. I love wearing olive, burgundy, and chocolate to bring out the color of my hair.

I have the darkest brown hair, almost black. I always loved my color with my dark eyes and light complection. Getting older, I have too many greys and don't like the salt/pepper look on me, I dyed it. I have alot of red undertones so my color turns out reddish brown. When my dark roots come in it takes on a chestnut brown look. I like it.

I have naturally dark brown hair with red lights in the sun. I henna it so that at the right angle in the sun it goes almost orange, but it's so dark that it still looks brown although a slightly redder brown than the roots when they come through. It's only with dark brown hair that you can get the two-tone effect with henna:)

I wash once a week to once every two weeks using SMT on the dry length. That gets rinsed off with the water that I use to wash the shampoo off my scalp, I guess the length is getting a very, very dilute shampoo wash. Then I do a final cold water rinse with ACV and hibiscus tea, the hibiscus tea really increases the shine. Down side of dark hair - the dandruff-like flakes of condish if you don't rinse it out well enough are really obvious:rolleyes:

How did I miss a whole thread on dark hair?!

I have naturally black hair that has a tint of brownish-red in the sun. I always find myself complaining that it isn't "black enough", which everyone finds crazy! I just wish it didn't have the subtle tint in the sunlight. I find that for my hair coconut oil and herb-infused ACV rinses are really great. I also cover my hair up when outside in the sun to help prevent any color change.

I love looking at dark hair. I have a black wig, and it looks pretty strange with my skin tone. But it's fun. Or I should say it used to be. I haven't taken that thing out of storage for a couple of years now. I bought it because it was longer than my own hair and on sale for cheap. Now my hair is longer. I think I'll get it out and be dark for a few hours. Later. Maybe.

Anyway, I like your thread. Terrific photos.

Yay for black hair! I tried going lighter, but I prefer how the black looks on me, especially with my fair complexion. Plus it tends to fit best with my style of dress and the colors I like to wear. I do run the risk as a goth of being monochromatic at times, but that's okay :D I use either Feria Bright Black or Nice and Easy Blue Black. I do love the blue blacks the best.

A friend of mine who has naturally dark brown hair has started getting some greys. She started dyeing her hair blue black a few months ago, because nothing else would cover the greys. She's not goth in the least, and the color looks really striking and gorgeous on her.

I thought I was the only one who had this -- I was always complaining about "product dandruff" and no one believed me! I got it not so much from conditioner though, but from styling products, which I no longer use. So, problem solved.

My hair is dark brown. It looks almost black in photos and goes auburn in bright sun. It has been several shades of blond and red, but for the past 10 years or so I've been leaving it alone, and I love my natural color. It looks like who I am.

I still consider henna from time to time, for the conditioning effect; I don't think it would change my color much .

Natural dark blonde/light brown who dyes to black here. I appreciate lighter colors on other people, but it just seems to me that I was born with the wrong color hair. Dark hair is just so much more me, and I look better in it.

I dyed black for a long time but it started to look to oflat, if that makes any sense, so Im working on trying to lift just a tiny bit of color to give it a few dark brown/red streaks for some dimension. I wish I had a picture of it, I really like the color I got last time I dyed.

Ok, another very dark brown haired here :D Mine is not so shiny because I am a curly and a coarse ;)

My brown is quite medium, not at all red, but not completely grey either. It has some (very) dark gold hairs at the temples, but in general it is quite dark. I also keep it out of the sun (my entire self in fact). My skin is very pale but it has a golden undertone too, and my eyes are green/hazel, I think I am an autumn? In any case I wear warm colours better.

I've worn my hair black for many years, and also coppers and reds. But I am trying to go natural this time :D

Naturally very dark red-brown here! I'm learning to appreciate my natural color more and more. I always used to resent the fact that it couldn't really be dyed and changed, and I wanted dark red so badly...but now I'm considering using hendigo to get my hair TOTALLY black, and see what a difference it makes. I'm getting really into the winter-high contrast look, even though my skin isn't pale by any stretch of the imagination. More of a coffee-cream complexion.

I have naturally very dark brown hair that looks reddish under the sun. Everybody calls it black, but it looks kinda pale compared to real black colored stuff. I think this color suits me. My skin is rather pale and I always have dark shadows under my eyes. Truely black hair would make me look sickly. I use a herbal vinegar rinse periodically to enhance shine.

Sometimes I think my hair should be called pink black. :)

Yay for the dark-haired lovelies! I adore my dark hair and would never want to be a blonde (although I did wish it as a child) Dark hair is so much more mysterious somehow. Mine is a very dark brown, almost black. I have greys on the top some so I use henna and indigo mixed to the roots for grey coverage. Once in a while I whole-head henndigo. The one thing i wonder about is the curls and waves. They seem to make my hair more fragile. Is it just me or is that really the case for wurly-curly?

Gotta chime in. Another black hair fan, and yes, a goth/metal person. :rockerdud: I read mentions of VIOLET black? Where would one find that? I'm currently blue black (and loving it) but that is intriguing. I also like the blue eyes, pale skin, black hair effect as well. The contrast is really fun. The roots are so irritating though, because they are sooooo far from black. I find my shampoo & conditioner to be good for me (Prann Spa Products) I guess because they have a balance of essential oils and cones?I guess I need cones because I dye?

Woo for dark hair!

Left to its natural state mine is dark brown at the roots, but after that it varies. Mostly medium brown, but lighter at the bottom, with natural highlights of blonde or red in the canopy. Currently it is dyed just slightly darker and redder. I last used a demi-permanent dye in Feb, and it still isn't completely gone.

Oh, and I too am a winter, although one that tips toward summer, I think.

Miss Clairol Conditioning Haircolor in Black Velvet is violet-based.

I've been coloring my hair black, blue-black, and very dark brown for about 4 years now. I like to switch it around. I have gone lighter once or twice in that time period, but have always gone back dark. For me, darker hair is easy to maintain. Also, I get more shine and very rarely have split tends. Another thing, my eyes are blue and the dark hair makes my eyes pop. I do have a goth side and the dark hair compliments that. I agree about the makeup....I can wear almost any shade of eyeshadow or lipstick and can get away with it since I have dark hair. When I was a blonde....not so much. :)

Another very dark brown here. It's a shade or two above black, but looks black in moderate to poor lighting and some natural light. My hair is naturally very glossy and lush, which I love. My natural color is really quite something.

I'm another winter with ivory skin and olive-tinted brown eyes. I wish they were dark blue. That's my favorite combination.

On Violet-Black hair: Clairol (I think it was) used to have a color called "Mahogany Black--Night Owl" or something like that, that was brownish black with a purple tint. It was almost exactly my natural color but with a purple tint. I loooved it, but its since been discontinued, I think.

I could never be anything but a (dark) brunette. I love the contrast between my hair and skin. It's definitely not subtle, but it isn't harsh, either. :inlove:

I have naturally very dark brown hair that looks reddish under the sun. Everybody calls it black, but it looks kinda pale compared to real black colored stuff. I think this color suits me. My skin is rather pale and I always have dark shadows under my eyes. Truely black hair would make me look sickly. I use a herbal vinegar rinse periodically to enhance shine.

I have the same general coloring (and dark circles under the eyes) that you are describing here. I have naturally dark brown hair with reddish undertones in the sun. My entire life, people have referred to my hair as "black" and it's always bothered me because it's not. :)

I henna, but it only shows on the parts of my hair that were lightened previously (I used to dye it reddish with boxed dye) and ony my whites. It does help a LOT with shine, though. Other things that have helped with shine for me are going cone-free, Chagrin Valley shampoo bars, and using a horn comb instead of a cheapie plastic bristle brush.

Count me in!
I've been dying my hair black (blue black) for over 10 years. I've done red a couple times, and tried to grow to my natural color, but natural makes me look sallow.

I definately like the high contrast, goth look. :)

Hi! I'm in this group! Naturally I'm a dark brown, but as my tips reach waist length they start to turn honey coloured. I'm more a nuetral to cool shade with some reddish hairs-not much.
I am growing out chemical dye with henna on top. Photos in my albums :)

I love that combination too. In general I really like my very dark brown eyes and I like dark eyes in general, but dark hair, fair skin and deep blue eyes is just so striking!

I noticed that a couple of the other dark haired beauties on this thread have a natural color that can lighten on the ends, especially with time or sun exposure. For those of you who don't like that effect, how do you try to minimize or avoid it?

For me I think the only way to avoid it would be to wear my hair bunned and covered in a scarf every time I leave the house in daylight. I don't find that practical, so I deal with the color change. The reason I dyed it last winter was because I was so sick of the lighter ends.

I have experimented with violet black:p But I had pink roots after that:eyebrows: L'Oreal and Garnier have it. If it comes to cones it all depends on if your hair likes it or not - try and see:)

My hair is naturally black but sun exposure can make it have a reddish brown tint. If I know I'll be outside for awhile I usually cover it up with a scarf or hat like you said--as much as I may hate it at times! I use a lot of coconut oil which is said to have a very low SPF, but I'm not sure how much truth is in that. I really wish I knew of more ideas! I don't really like the hot weather where I live anyway (and I tan easily but prefer NOT to), so I can usually avoid it. I hope we can get some more answers! :)

My hair is dark brown. In some lights it can look almost blue black, while it looks lighter in other lights. I have never dyed it and don't plan to even though I'm slowly going gray. I'm surprised to read about how many young people dye their hair dark brown or black--I had no idea this was popular--but I'm glad it is :D

Here is a picture of me with my grandbaby, taken about a year ago.

Ah Mely, you look so sweet with your grandbaby!

My hair is medium to light brown but in my head it's dark. (I mean that I think my hair is dark - not that there is nothing in my head but darkness. LOL.) It used to be much darker and then decided change colour all of a sudden. My skin is the shade of pale that I can't decide if it would look better with the drama of very dark hair, or just like a ghost is passing through. Not that I'd dye it in any case.

i was just looking at my hair and if i comb it forward I can SEE my regrowth with my own eyes instead of with the camera!
Anyways, from all those honey treatments or something, my virgin hair is more F/M but more on the M side, and it is a golden light brown in sections and a golden dark brown in others....weird.
I am SOOO excited for 100% virgin hair- you have no idea. It has been 3 years before i saw my virgin hair with my own eyes! But i can't see it in the normal position yet unless i look up at my fringe or something but i can't really judge the colour well that way.

This is just a totally random story. My Asian friend says that when she was a teenager (shes in her 30s now) blonde hair was IN. She even tried going blonde herself (a total disaster on her naturally blue black hair). She always says I'm lucky that nowadays dark hair is in, with lots of celebrities going dark or embracing their naturally dark tresses. Of course there is still a bit of 'blondes have more fun' Playmate hype, but I think the playing field has leveled a lot since then. :D Personally I think every hair colour can be smashing on the right person. :)

I think blond hair was in all through the 80's (a Farrah Fawcett thing maybe). In fact, it was in before that, but before that it wasn't really main stream for young people to dye, so most people had their natural colour. I didn't even realize that dark hair had become stylish until I read this thread. (Guess I`m completely out of the style loop :p )

I have dark brown hair. Things like camera flash can make it look a lot lighter than it is, especially indoors. I've always wanted black hair, and I tried to henna+indigo but got scared off from that when a) it didn't really work except to darken my ends (which was good!! But now, two years later, they're light again :() and b) I had a HUGE shed not long after.

I don't think shine has a lot to do with color (except that it shows up better on darker hair), more like texture, but anyway... I use small amounts of shea butter to oil my hair between washes, and do deep oilings with coconut on the length and castor+almond+coconut on the scalp (and I think this scalp mix is making my hair grow in darker, fwiw) before washing. I CWC using -cones. I also do molasses treatments fairly regularly. I was doing mayo once a month but skipped it last month, oops.

Yeah, that's all.

So here's a question for this thread.

Over the years I've tried to bring out the red tones in my hair, and the sun, as others have mentioned, has given me highlights and lightened the ends.

Now I'm considering using a black chemical dye to cover my whites and make the rest of my hair jet black. I look at my profile picture and love the "black glass" thing, as my hair looks much more evenly black there than it does in real life.

So yes, I'm dying black hair black, covering some grays (about 2%) and I was wondering what dye you would recommend? I'd want to do as little damage as possible, but I'm not so interested in doing 2-step henndigo, just because it seems like way too much work for me to handle.

Well you would want something gentle maybe a demi permanent hair dye with no ammonia or little as possible so no big damage is done to your hair. BFH used a good one I think it was this one. It doesn't contain ammonia and is only a 9volume developer. Here is the link for Sally's.

Try L'Oreal Casting Creme Gloss - it's demi-permament, no ammonia and suppoused to last for 28 washes but it's much more faithful. I've been using it for a while now and I'm really happy with it - the best dye ever:cheese:

So I was wondering about this recently...

My mother and I both have black hair (although she dyes to hide her whites) but when we're outside it seems that our hair "reacts" sort of differently to the sun. If I go outside, the top of my hair almost instantly gets really hot from sun exposure. I went to touch my mom's scalp the other day, thinking it would be just as hot, but it wasn't! I mean, it was warm, but not nearly as hot as mine was...

Does this happen to anyone else?

Just to add to her information, Sally's also carries a line called Clairol Radiance Colorgloss that is a demi-permanent color. http://www.sallybeauty.com/Radiance%20Colorgloss%20Semi-Permanent%20Hair%20Color/CLAIRL20,default,pd.html
I've had great results from this line. It is long-lasting for a demi-perm and makes my super glossy after use. It stays a true black for a long time on the hair. I use the 1A shade. You also have to buy the Color Infuser (developer) that goes with the line. http://www.sallybeauty.com/Radiance%20Color%20Infuser/CLAIRL19,default,pd.html

Unfortunately the L'oreal Color Gems didn't work for me and turned my hair an ashy dark brown. It might work for you though.

I'm a natural dark haired guy, but my hair is currently mixed with henna red-and-dark brown, with more dark color at the roots.

I fully plan on cutting off the red as it grows. I never thought I'd care enough, but I DO miss my natural hair color, though more the softness associated with virgin hair than with the color. xD

That girl had the most beautiful hair I've ever seen (maybe such a hair is possible only created by computer?). Straight, smooth, black-like-universe and sooo glossy. And silky - no stringiness:demon:

And I'm so tempted right now to dye it black-black again - pure, cold, mysterious black:cloud9:. No reds or warm browns (which just don't suit me). Are you with me, anyone? And does someone know any kind of radiant, softer black? I call it Mole's Fur Black. I'm too pale for anything stronger:(

I'm a brun (whats male for brunette? lol)
but my hair can go to both ends of the color spectrum.
The top bits turn blonde in summer (!!) and the rest remains a mousy earthy light brown.

I'm quite comfortable with this color but a few months ago I dyed my hair chestnut brown and I loved how thick and dark it looked. Now i was thinking of coloring it a dark brown with red tints. Dark enough to be called "brown" but not black, and with a slight red tint for the sunshine reflection. I think i'll end up mixing dye bottles to make this effect.

But i dont know whether i should dye it. Unless I do a semi-permanent then I will 'coz in the end it washes out right :)

But i like being brown-haired! When I was 14 and 15 it was dyed black and contrasted a bit too much with my fair skin, and I'm not very inclined to dye my hair blond, even though patches of my beard are so blond they're nearly white! lol

For shininess my Herbal Essences Conditioner works (for normal hair).. and softness due to a Vinegar rinse after deep-treating my hair. I'm not sure when I have least tangles though. My hair's curly so 5 minutes after detangling patiently, I have a head full of tangles again!

A chocolate brown non-permanent colour sounds like it would be perfect for you. Chocolate brown is medium-dark brown with a hint of red. Loreal Casting is the best non-permanent colour IMHO, so if that's available to you it might be worth a try. I second HE for normal hair, it's my one and only!

My hair is a medium brown that I dye darker and redder. I use Clairol Radiance, which is a demi-permanent. I mix medium red brown with dark neutral brown. The color does fade away over time, but very, very slowly on my hair.

My natural hair color is the darker side of medium but oh, oh I loved it dyed black. It's just SUCH A PAIN to keep up with the roots. My favorite dye was a plant based dye that did have some chemicals in it, I bought it at Whole Foods. It was called Natruacolor I believe. I so loved my black hair.

One warning about going black though: you have to bleach it out if you ever want to be brown again. And bleach is like hair murder. You'll either lose a lot of length or deal with having cardboard for hair.

I'm another natural brunette, nearly black, although it's got a strange purple tint in some lights. There are photos in my albums that show this. I've got about 12-15" of natural hair, and past that is bleach fried, etc. to a sort of bronzy orangish.

How can I tell what season I am? Is there a site I can look up or something that describes them? For reference, I've got pale skin(with a slight rosy tint), darkish blue-gray eyes, and dark dark hair. I don't tan well (I can only get about two-three shades darker) but I don't really burn easily either.

I do like my coloration, though I miss having my hair black (and purple, but that's beside the point). I'm a sometime goth too (In other words I prefer black, but darkish colors are good, and some light blues, soft greens (that aren't too yellowy) etc.

ETA: Never mind, I found out that I am most definately a winter. (Which fits, since that's my favorite season! In fact, When I made up my name, I assigned it the meaning, 'the sight of the winter sky through storm tossed branches at twilight')

*totally off-topic*

But I just had to say that each time I see the title of this thread, I think about "darkness" and "charlie murphy" "rick james" scenes from the dave chappelle show

p.s. to get back to the topic, I'm also officially a mid-ash-brown hair color (although I'm currently henna'ing)

Count me in here. I have very dark brown hair, that is black underneath, where it gets no sun. Right now I have some ashy highlights, but they are supposed to be there to make growing my gray out easier (so it "blends" at the roots). I am not sure if I like them or not. You can see my hair color in my pictures, but it looks redder than it is.

My hair is naturally black. I've been hennaing it for the last 4 years, but my hair is so dark that it just absorbs the red.

I'm 'Eurasian' with black hair. When I was younger I always wished I was blonde... by maybe grade 10 I got over it. I dyed my hair a lighter brown last year... after 4 months went back to black n never looked back... hahaha except now the black dye keeps fading so I look like I have a black bob and brown extensions. The contrast is especially obvious when my hair is bunned up with my tips next to my roots. But I love my natural haircolour now... and it is very sleek and shiny.

Is there a site for this season typing thing?

I have dark brown hair, I have no intentions of changing my natural hair color in any way because I love it and it loves me :p, and I don't do anything special for it because... I don't really see a need.

Against the frizz I use a cone-y leave in. It doesn't always work, but it helps some.

Does anyone have any genius tips about how to best take "back of head" pictures of dark hair? Mine usually are too dark to show anything much.
I think sunlight is the best option for this, but I don't get direct sun light in my apartment (or not for very long), so I can't always use it. Alternatives would be greatly appreciated.

My natural hair colour is dark brown but if you look closely I have a lot of red there also. So when I began dying my greys in my 30's I tried dark brown and it came out almost black and while I am sallow complected the dark colour washed me out and now I use medium ask brown which works out about right. Because I have a lot of red in my hair and don't want it to fade to orange, this is why I use ashy tones.

I've had all colours auburn, frosted, frosted to the point where I was an awful blonde, didn't learn my lesson and began streaking it. I personally love red hair but it's the awful orange colour it fades to that I can't stand. My sig has a picture of what my hair was like last year, before I coloured it and sorted it out.

You can see the rusty mess. I had really ignored my hair, was in a down period and didn't care. When my mood picked up and this picture was taken I was really embarrassed. I like the colour my hair is now but the roots need doing really bad. I have my colour here (L'oreal Natural Match medium ash brown), just waiting for my daughter to find a few minutes to apply it!!!!!:blossom:

I'm a very dark warm brown. A shade or possibly 1.5 away from actual black. I've always liked other hair colors best, but my skin is just too olive and dark to look right in any colors lighter than a darker almost medium red brown. I don't want black hair either because that looks too typical (with my coloring). I guess I'm one of the few, but my hair will not lighten when exposed to sunlight; even my one natural red hair doesn't lighten. I rather wish it did.

I don't get as much shine, but I am a kind of coarse curly. But I usually have to use flash to take back oh head pictures. It makes the colors kind of wonky but otherwise it really is too dark to tell much.

Talking about the winter season-thing.... I'm not sure if I am a winter or autumn. My natural hair is dark brown, my eyes are the darkest brown. My skin tans very easily and is already very tan in this picture. I look better in gold than silver. Would anyone mind telling me what they think I am???

Yeah I dont get the season thing either. I consider myself a winter, but thats mostly because thats my favorite season and I look best in very dark colors. But I dont get the "warm complexion" or "cool complexion" thing. I think I may just be neutral.

I know nothing about the season thing, but just from my own perspective, its based largely on what colors you can wear best. If you look good in oranges and browns (or gold, Florida Mom) Youre probably a fall, or at least thats what I would think.

If you can wear dark colors and blues/greens/purples best, youre probably a winter. I prefer silver on me, this also says winter to me.

I'm a Spring/Winter and I like my hair color best when it is dark. I just hennaed again and I'm not loving it, so I am going to go back to my Chocolate color. It has a violet base and looks very nice with my dark eyes and medium skin. There is something very exotic about dark hair. ;)

I'm a summer in coloring,( as far as I can figure) with medium brown hair. It has lot's of gold and red in it, so I can get by sometimes with pretending to be an autumn. I have a lot of Native American coloring, but very cold blue eyes...so it's sort of mixed up. I used to be jealous of my sisters for having great red hair, but now I wouldn't trade the brown hair for anything. It's the same color as iced tea, and it makes me happy to see it shine in the sunlight. Lately I've been using the Sauve brand shampoo for brunettes, and it has been just awesome.

I'm a summer with medium brown hair, too. It has golden undertones and a few blonde strands but I think it is rather mousy or ashy compared to others with brown hair.
I used to color my hair black with box dyes and indigo but I really like dark brown hair more than black hair so I am going to color the roots dark brown from time to time. With henna I doesn't seem to get the color I like so I use semi permanent chemical dyes.

I have a pale skin and blue eyes by the way.

I'm a winter, i prefer silver, not sure if it looks better on me but i've been told i'm a winter and i trust them! :)
I wish i was a summer sometimes though! I want more highlights but as my hair gets longer i get more lighter ends.
My regrowth is only nose length. My hair isn't even APL with the virgin regrowth :( But my hair as a whole is waist when straight.
I have seen auburn and i do agree it is a lovely colour (my ends are a dark auburn now)
I think once i grow out my hair a bit and in the summer time i'll do a honey treatment on my canopy because i love how people get natural highlights and i don't think i get them...can't remember i haven't had virgin hair in 3 and a half years! (its a long time for me, i have bad memory)

Very exciting makeup news here! Today I went out and actually bought some real lipcolor--it's Revlon's Just Bitten Lip Stain (in cherry tart)--and I absolutely love it. It's such a nice color and since it is a stain it can go from subtle red to very deep. I wish I could add a picture now but it's close to 12 and alas, no good lighting.

Kiraela, well this is the first time I've ever used one. It's basically a way of coloring your lips without the consistency or shine from lipstick or gloss. The one I have is in a tube with the little rollerball applicator. It's really lightweight and just sort of feels like water or ink when you apply it. Also, the color is supposed to last for a long time. HTH!

My hair color is a walnut brown. It is naturally a dark, varied brown with subtle red undertones that come out in the bright sunlight. It is too varied to be mistaken for black. (With black-brown eyes and an olive complexion, I'm a winter, too.) I've never changed from my natural hair color. I enhance the shine with diluted white vinegar rinses on wash days, and coconut oiling of the length on the other days.

The sun will lighten my hair, so my ends are noticeably lighter than my scalp hair in up-do's. It's not as drastic a difference since I take better care of my hair when swimming. The added chlorine used to make the color difference even greater. The only thing I know to do about it is to cover. I use a buff made of UV-protectant fabric if I know I will be in the sun for an extended period of time. Otherwise, I don't worry about it. Like another poster, I like the added dimension that the color variation brings.

And now that I have some silver showing up, I'm embracing those, too!

My hair is mid brown and Ive been keeping it natural for about a year now. Its been practically every colour possible at some point but getting drawn back to colouring it darker. Bought a henna/indigo mix from Lush to make it dark brown/black but a bit unsure about the eventual growing out I'll have to go though.

Does a mix with indigo fade at all or its it like pure henna and become permanant?

I'm a natural brunette too, with copper highlights in the sunlight. I love having dark hair! The closest I've ever come to dying it was with a sage tea rinse. I was experimenting with the tea to see if it would disguise my white hairs but only did it three times. The white hairs don't bother me anymore. There aren't many and I figure it's actually pretty cool - they're growing in a streak at the front. My boyf told me I could grow one like Rogue from the X-Men :D He's a movie addict...

I can't believe I just now found this thread.

I have naturally black hair that I used to dye (I love red hair!). But I'm too lazy for the upkeep of dyed hair so I henndigoed my hair and now it's more or less my natural color... or at least there's no obvious demarcation between dyed and virgin hair, I don't think :P

I think my pictures show my hair as blacker than it really is because when I look at it against my black pants, my hair is definitely browner. I used to henna so in sunlight my hair has a red glow.

I love black hair, pale skin, and light eyes (blue, green, gray, etc) . Sadly my eyes are the darkest brown and my skin is a medium shade (even after years of staying out of the sun).

I love that combination too. In general I really like my very dark brown eyes and I like dark eyes in general, but dark hair, fair skin and deep blue eyes is just so striking!

Another dark-haired, here! I have that combination - fair skin, blue eyes and dark brown hair. A lot of people have complimented me on how striking it is. :)

I've been jet-black, brownish black (it was this color two weeks ago, but my color has faded slightly), and plum black. The last color was the best one...Feria Midnight Ruby was the color, and it was so pretty.

Glad this thread is up and kicking again! :)

Monsterkitti, the permanancy of indigo is very unpredictable. It is as impossible to get rid of as henna for many, but I, among others, couldn't get it to stick to save my life. I did 5 or 6 full head two steps and never got any darker than a deep brown, and that washed out quickly. I've never used Lush, butsome say it fades fast compared to BAQ.

After playing with henna and indigo for a while and giving up, I switched to a dark brown dye instead of the straight black. I do love having black hair and I love how it brings out my green eyes but as a natural bonde, it is a lot of work to maintain a true black.

I have been considering going back to black, but it always seem flat to me. The blue-blacks never gave me any of the blue, just black. So I'm not sure what I will do when it's time to dye again, but I have a few weeks to figure it out!

Think I'll have a go, the conditioning it'll give is really appealing and even if it fades and I end up with red im sure I'll get used to it :)

Ohio Sky

Hmm, depends on your natural shade. I was always that nice day-glo orange after henna, never a true red, and didn't even get the extra conditioning benefits that everyone enjoys, either.

Henna just was not for me I guess lol, but I seem to be the minority here so by all means, give it a go. Just strand test a few times, and don't ever put bleach on your again if you're using indigo.

Another dark brown/almost black here!

It's always been my preference, maybe because when I grew up all the gorgeous movie stars were dark haired. To me, they were always the most beautiful (Elizabeth Taylor, Debra Paget, Vivien Leigh...)

Then came the 50's with Marilyn Monroe, then the 60's (or was it the early 70's?) with the notion that "blonds have more fun"!! From then, it seems the largely preferred (though that might just be yet more media hype) hair colour for women is blond. For the record, when I people watch, I notice the men turn their heads way more often for blonds....regardless of how they are dressed. A brunette has to be very slim and stylish to get a look.

But I don't care! :p

I've always had very dark hair and now getting a few grays. Fortunately salt-n-pepper hair has always been my favourite. Not sure how my hair will age, as both my parents (both dark-haired passed away fairly young. My dad was in his early 60's and still had very dark hair. My mom didn't have many grays, but started dying in her mid-40's and her mom had dark hair, but when she was older, kept dying it very black.

I'm another one with very fair skin and the contrast bothered me a long time. I'm too old to pull off the goth look! lol :) and it's never been my sort of fashion statement though I like the look on some. A few years ago I went to a theatre shop to by foundation and the closest colour to my own skin was called "Vampiric" LOL!!

Many years ago I used a temporary black dye and it was way too harsh -- I didn't think it would be so noticeable since my hair is so dark to begin with. I think most people DO assume that I dye my hair as most of my grays are on the underside of my temples and you only see them if I'm in a ponytail, and not always then. It's since joining TLHC that I've tossed up my hands and given up the hang-ups about that and now I'm very happy with my hair!! :D

Because of that I find make-up really hard to get right. If I don't put enough I look washed out, if I put too much it looks very sharp against my skin. I've experimented with amounts and colour gradients for years and haven't got it "just right" yet. Any tips? My eyes tend to look quite small on my face and eye make-up can make them look beady. Also, I'm "a Winter" with green-hazel eyes and sometimes they reflect light very strongly so sometimes they almost take on a very pale hue - almost a "no eyeballs" look! shudder:

Speaking of reflection....and I guess this is a good thing....I just had some travel photos developed and I looked at a few and thought, "what is that GREY -- it looks like I pressed my head against wet paint!" then realized it's reflection cuz it's so SHINY!!! LOL!! Thank you, LHC!! I ain't never seen THAT before!!! There is one quite nice pic I'll try to send along where my hair looks way shinier than I thought it was!

Anyway, thanks for starting this thread! Wonderful idea, and I really appreciate it being here!!! :flower:

Is there a site for this season typing thing?

I think Carol Jackson either invented it or made it popular and I've really relied on it for years -- especially in my wardrobe. Her book was "Color Me Beautiful" which I imagine is still around and she comes up on google. I just found this site, too, which helps you find your season:
http://www.colormebeautiful.com/seasons/index.html Hmmm, I just tried it and it asked only the hair colour. The full quiz (in the book) would include eye colour and skin tone.

If you google "determine your season", "determine your color type", "what season are you" etc you'll get lots of sites.

The book also provided pages of typical colour grades for each season, which you could hold up to yourself to get an idea what suited you best.

I think this is a site geared toward men, but it had the best info I could come across quickly:

which kind of black you should choose depends on your skin tone i think.
my skin for example looks sick if i have red in my hair, only looks good whith cold brown-black, pure black or blue-black.
but if it suits you: i would take burgundy-black or some other tone with some red in it. the contrast will make your eyes glow even more!:)

Ohio Sky, I guess it would depend on whether you want natural or dramatic black. I mixed Chocolate and Truffle Mega Browns and got a dark violet brown. I really liked it, but it was definately not a natural color. ;)

I am still using the Chocolate and trying to cover up my orangey henna. It is a nice, rich dark brown with a blue base.

ah-AH, a detour! While we're on the subject :D ...I wanted to try contacts for my updated prescription. I've never worn them before. Since I have green-hazel eyes, I was thinking of getting green ones to enhance that.

But then again, there are other groovy colours... ;)

Ideas?

cani, I have no idea what my skin tone is. I can't tell the difference between warm tones and neutral and cool as far as skin goes. I have both golden and pink I guess... golden on most of my body but I have rosacea so I'm prone to pink skin in the face.

intothemist, I also considered colored contacts when I renerwed my Rx last year, but I got a trial pair of the regular contacts and simply could. not. wear. them. At all. I tried for weaks and it only got worse. So I gave up on that.

BUT I think they're really cool. I always wanted to get 2 sets and have dichromatic eyes! Green is beautiful, but unnatural colors like violet would be fun to play with too. I don't know if you want to pick a color that obviously unnatural for every day wear, though. I would suggest going with the green, and maybe at some point in the future you could mess with other colors without having to commit to having that color every day.

Angellen

I would not recommend colored contacts for a first time wearer. Lenses are almost always difficult to put in at first, are finicky at best, and colored contacts are an entirely different level of difficulty. They are more floppy and harder to maneuver, and are usually bigger to compensate for the color in the lenses. A larger lens will be more uncomfortable on your eye than a smaller one, in most cases.

That said, I have medium-brown eyes with a hazel/olive green ring and I've worn green, blue, and violet lenses. My favorite was probably purple, then blue, then green. The green looked the most natural, but they were all extremely convincing. I would get lots of compliments on my 'unusual eye color', and not on my lenses (disproving the myth that colored lenses all look fake). If you decide to go with colors, I would try Freshlooks Color blends. It's the best brand I've tried.

(If it helps, I have ivory skin and very very dark reddish brown hair.)

Another dark-haired from southern Europe! My hair is natural dark brown, a half tone lighter than ebony black. I never get highlights from the sun, even when I spent 90+ days at the beach in the summers before having to work... I love my color and I would never go for a lighter tone. I used to dye it blue-black, but now all the color has grown out. Being a metalhead, I consider myself lucky for having the ideal heavy metal hair color naturally!

well, with my eyes (mostly green with 2 specs of brown in them) it's not the color of hair, but the color of makeup.
I go with a blue black hair color because it compliments my skin. I tried natural black and "soft" black a couple times but I always looked sick.

Also, what you're wearing can help bring out the color too. A green, purple or gray shirt usually make my eyes look VERY green.

.... I think most people DO assume that I dye my hair as most of my grays are on the underside of my temples and you only see them if I'm in a ponytail, and not always then....

I sometimes think the same thing...that people think I dye my hair. I have quite a few greys, but in some lights they don't show up much. This bothers me, because I don't care for the look of an older person with harshly dyed black hair. I have NEVER dyed my hair. Here is a recent pic with pug trying to eat my hair):

I think your hair looks very natural, Mely. :flowers:

It has an almost silvery dimension that keeps it from being too harsh.

intothemist, I find that I actually get more attention from men than most of the blonde haired gals I know.

I find this is true as well. I was blonde from the time I was 12 - 19. Dyed blonde all the time. I got attention then, but since dyeing dark brown (which is now faded and gone a red color) I've noticed the number of guys giving me attention has AT LEAST doubled, if not more. Weird, how you always hear about blondes having all the fun and getting all the attention. As a brunette, I always get more attention - and a lot more respectful attention at that. I dont have guys just tossing numbers at me as I walk by them at KMart anymore, but uhh, really what girl in their right mind would call some strange guy whose like 15 years+ older than her. Creeeeepy. Now its just a whole lot more stares and jaw dropping. :eyebrows:

But I only own black! lol.

I saw a stand at the drug store that had different sets of make up for bringing out different eye colors... I can't remember what brand it is but I so want to get all the eye makeup for green!

I think I will just have to go into the store and look at the colors and see what jumps out at me.

I think you mean Almay and the colours they do for green eyes are mostly purples, I have an eyeliner from the range and it really does make my eyes stand out :agree:

Also i'm dying my hair plum tomorrow, It looks mostly black with a hint of purple on the box so I thought why not? if i'm not wearing black i'm wearing purple lol. so i'll match my hair hehe

Count me in in this group. I have naturally dark brown hair, but have been using the 2 step henna-indigo process to richen my hair to black & I love it.

I get lots of compliments on my hair color, I just love Indigo!!!

hi there, I just wanted to pipe in and say that you should never worry that people think you dye your hair... it's a beautiful color and I think most people can tell the difference between unnaturally colored hair and natural... you're hair seems shiney and soft (in the pic) and generally that is not the case for over dyed hair (at least, not in my own experience) :)

Oh, and I love Pugs!

I think this is a site geared toward men, but it had the best info I could come across quickly:
http://www.askandyaboutclothes.com/Tutorials/CindyBuschColorAnalysis.htm

Thanks, Intothemist!
I found the color me beautiful site with the test that only asks for the hair color, and I was a bit disappointed, because skin and eye color are very important, too, and can make a huge difference in which colors will suit someone.

I'll look into the info you gave me. :)

Ah I was actually going to ask about that... I've got very black length and about 4-5 inches of dark/brown/red/black/some blonde/you name it at the roots lol. I bought a plum/burgundy black sorta color and was curious to see if any of it would turn up on the length. I figured probably no.

I also snagged an eyeliner and mascara from that Almay stand. I don't notice the mascara being any cooler than my normal mascara but I do dig the eyeliner.

I need info about black hair dyes and thought this might be a good place to ask. I'm thinking about dyeing my hair black this winter. I'm just trying to see if I like darker hair on me, so I'm aiming for a non damaging wash out dye. To the bottle-brunettes, does dyeing hair black damage it? There must be dyes that are deposit only, i e not containing peroxide and ammonia, I guess? How quickly does the dye fade? TIA!

I just figured that the dye is very dark already and you can only really see the purple in direct sunlight which I don't do shudder: It does looks pretty cool though and the length has taken a purple tint :D

Ohio Sky - Did you get the dual eyeliner with the pink for highlighting? I got that one and Its pretty :)

August 11th, 2008, 12:09 AM
Basak, I have no experience with temporary or deposit-only dyes, I only know that they DO exist, lol. My local store doesn't carry them, which is a shame because they are usually far less damaging. I know you can get them at Sally's, but my little hick town doesn't have one. If you have one nearby, go there and ask about deposit only dyes and they should be able to not only direct you to one, but give more info on how long they will last, etc.

Bunnii, what color is your hair naturally? Mine is very light, and I would think that would make the purple in a purple-black color more prominent, but that hasn't been my experience with blue-black.

And I didn't see the pink highlighter thing! Mine is just a deep plumish color, but I like it.

Hello. :) Another dark haired one here. Actually my natural color is a dark blond that highlights to a golden pale blond when long... but blond really just isn't me. Not sure if that makes sense. lol I dye it medium-dark brown. I so wish I could go true black, but I really don't think my yellow undertones would allow it... plus the eyebrows thing. My brows are blond so they require a lot of work with dark hair! Black hair though is the most beautiful thing to me though. Maybe some day I'll just say screw what "works" on me and go for it! hahaha

I wanted to be a blonde when I was a kid, like some others mentioned here, but now I like my hair the way it is. When it's short, it's really dark brown, and a lot of people call it black. But it lightens up FAST when it gets longer -- even if I hardly go in the sun. The ends get a lot of gold highlights, and overall it gets lighter and redder and golder. I also have a whole lot of silvers, but my hair is so fine that unless someone's looking close it just makes my hair look lighter overall. It's curly, so shine isn't really noticeable a lot of the time.

I don't recall the blue contacts I wore for a couple years being any trickier to manage than the regular ones, but there are lots of brands out there! My night vision wasn't as good while I wore them, though, I think.

Maybe someone on this thread full of dark-hairs can answer this question? I have been considering trying CV Cafe Moreno because I read that the results are good (moisture and etc.) and the smell too. But the description of it says that it can possibly darken hair. I'm afraid my silvers will go yellow! Has anyone had any problems like that with it?

mellie
August 23rd, 2008, 04:54 PM
Interesting you should mention Cafe Moreno, I just bought a sample and tried for the very reason of hoping it would naturally darken my grays, because I had read that in one of the threads. However, I only used it once and had to dispose of it, so I can't tell you for sure. The smell was too strong (clove and patchouli) and my poor DH was sneezing left and right. If you PM Ktani, she will probably remember the name of the person who noticed the darkening and you could get more info.

I like the contrast to my light skin and my favourite color tone has always been red. Right now its pure Henna but I have also been red-brown and black.
I dont want to go darker than natural anymore though..takes soo long to grow/ wash out

Hulloooo, just dropping in to add this blog post (http://peculiarbeautyblog.blogspot.com/2008/08/are-you-brunette-of-brownette.html)which I thought might amuse. It's from a blog by someone who collects vintage beauty manuals. Apparently, back in the day, "brunettes" were those with dark dark brown hair, and lighter browns were referred to as "brownette". So I have been calling myself by the correct term all along! :silly:

Hello all,

here's another Winter-type-natural-dark-brown girl like so many of you :)
Due to some unnatural (uh, well, chemical) treatment, my ends were light brown and above that my hair was some kind of reddish brown. So I tried to restore my natural color with some indigo treatments, which more or less worked. Unfortunately, indigo tends to fade...

Ah, and it's nice to meet cani in this thread, I really love her shiny black hair! :waving:

So do you follow the LHP or are you just a fan of the music? Generally speaking, you don't meet people from the LHP on forums like this very often. So it interests me when a few of us show up.

As a kid, I had golden brown hair that cascaded down my back into ringlets. In high school my hair had darkened to a dark brown with a few natural highlights remaining in the front. Due to messing around with chemical dye for 6 months, and then henna, my hair is now a dark auburn. I like the color but I don't really like it with my face. I look REALLY good with blonde highlights or with very dark hair, and since using henndigo to darken is by far less damaging, that's what I'm trying to do now, at least on my length.

My hair is either really dark brown or black--I've never been sure which to call it. I've always liked the color of my hair. I've had some odd encounters where people walk up to me and ask if it's dyed--or assume it's dyed and ask what product I use--which I guess is a compliment?

I'm one of those naturally blond people who is convinced that nature made a mistake about my hair color. =3

I had chemical dyed blue-black long hair for.. years, until I had a whole big fiasco with bleach and killed my hair.. With blond hair that I HATED, I decided to do something fun with it (bright purple) before chopping it all off (to shoulder length) and beginning with two-step henna & indigo.

I've been doing that for quite a while now, though once I jumped on the purple roots bandwagon (what's up with that? lol) and I'm doing that again when my roots start to show.

It's lovely, thick, super shiny and in amazing condition right now. I adore black hair. ^_^
