View Full Version : If you had to cut a bob

If you HAD to cut your hair into a bob, what style of bob would it be and why?

This is just for fun. If you've had a bob before, what style was it, and was it "you"? If you've never had a bob what would you get to fit your personality?

Yes, this is a long hair site, but this is also a hypothetical question! You know, assuming you could grow your length back overnight. (Wouldn't that be nice!).

Post pics or links to examples if you are so inclined.

Have fun! :D

I thinks it would be length chin and all hair the same length.

So I can grow my hair again longer again without large problems.:D

But I would cut my hair never so briefly voluntarily.:p

I would get an inverted bob (longer in the front), with the back just touching my shoulders and the front being an inch or so longer. A bob needs to be funky, not soccer mom. :p

Like the one I got last April:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=6670&pictureid=88801

Always wanted a bob like Louise Brooks' but my hair's too thin to get that perfect helmet.

But I'm not going to do that. I've worn my hair in bobs of various lengths almost all my life. Now I want long hair. I'll admit that it's been fairly easy to let it grow once I'd bobbed it all one length. :D

I used to wear longer in front, at collarbone, and layered in the back so it was lighter and less poufy. I liked it a lot.

Like - get a bob or enter a knife fight?

It would have to be some extreme circumstance like that, because for me, ugly is spelled b-o-b.

As long as I could have my hair and still call it a bob. At least shoulder length, I hope, lightly layered.

was always a cycle for me,, grow to just touching shoulder then cut to just above chin straight bob.. Was an easy cut I could do myself.. :) Not this time :) :)

All one length at my chin. Like this one, but without the funky highlights I think...

I loved having chin length hair, perfectly blunt and the same length all around. With my bangs of course (which I still have). It looks really great on me. But I love long hair much more :)

I had actually been considering cutting my hair in a short blunt bob for a while, just to get what's left of my color out of it and then grow back fresh. But I can't bring myself to do it. I had short hair once before (which I asked for long layers and got a mullet) and it was a nightmare (on me anyway). Never again.:(

I had a chin length blunt bob for a short while, it was horrible on me. If I had to have one again, it'd be the longest possible version of a bob (shoulder?), so I could tie it back.

I had a bob. It was longer in the front. Whatever that style is called. It was not me at all. It was too.... high maintenance. I had to have it straightened for it to look good. That is why I wore it up every single day.

If I HAD to have a bob again, I would have some layering in there so my hair could be worn naturally without any heat styling, so my natural waves would flow nicely.

I had triangle hair if I did not straighten my angled bob.

I had a bob for years. It was a Louise Brooke's bob. I loved it but now I love my long hair.

Oooh, I saw a girl over the weekend with one kinda like this (http://static.becomegorgeous.com/img/arts/2010/Nov/24/3266/bob_hair_style_retro.jpg). Not quite so glammy, a little more indie.

She just had a very cool and confident vibe, and her face was the perfect shape for the cut. And at her nape, she had a natural little point of hair, so that her hairline wouldn't have to be shaved... I can't explain it, but it always looks good on girls with short hair.

I would definitely get a bob like hers.

I've been dreaming of a jagged, assymetrical bob; long sideswept bangs, very short in the back. I've always had such sculpted styles when my hair was short that I'd like a change.

kwaniesiam
January 24th, 2011, 06:55 PM
I wouldn't. If I had long hair and was forced to go short I'd get a pixie similar to what I have now. Bobs are not at all flattering on me.

Ideally I'd want a sleek 20's bob, like this: http://chabrieres.pagesperso-orange.fr/actresses/louise_brooks.jpg

It wouldn't work with my hairtype, though, unless I'd straighten it all the time.

A 20s bob with finger waves would also be nice, but only if I had someone to make the finger waves for me. :p

If I had to have a bob I think I'd bleach the life out of it and dye it a really bright colour. Maybe Green =)

I usually went for an asymmetrical inverted bob, longer in the front, with the longest pieces coming to just below my chin. It suited me pretty well I think, but I just got tired of always having to wear it the same way, so now I'm growing my hair out and getting some options. I don't think I would mind it too much going back to the bob. I might be annoyed, but that would be the worst of it for me.

I am a huge fan of the bob and had it for many years. I like the simple all one length version best it is clean, classic, simple and never goes out of style.

This was a long version of the wedge, which was an inverted bob style, right?
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c79/spidermom/MO3b.jpg
I'd get that cut again if I could look like that again (about 30 years ago).

The bob that looked awful on me was just below chin length in the front, shorter in the back. I don't think a picture of that awful thing survived the purge. (I sometimes go on a mission to destroy all bad pictures of me.)

I've had them all and loved them! My most recent chin length bob was great and easy to grow out but my favorite by far was the super layered, graduated bob that was longer in the front and short in the back.

Incidentally just another UK slang, well in my area anyway, bob is what you call a piece of poo but using the sh word, like you'd say its well bob or bobbins that!

I actually cannot stand bobs personally, they remind me of somebody wearing a motorbike helmet-no offence to anybody who likes bobs or wears motorbike helmets!:cheese:

I think bobs look great on other people, especially thin, long necked women. I fell in love with the look and got a chin length bob in 2005 (I actually did it more for an emotional reason: breaking up with a horrible guy, so I actually don't regret it because it was freeing). However it didn't look so great on me, although I was much thinner then and probably would look better compared to if I had one now or at my higher weights.
I wouldn't ever get a bob again, though.

My hair has been cut into an inverted bob so often, I feel stuck in it. When it grows to my shoulders I cave in and cut it; it's a hard cut for me to grow out. I actually really like it when it is between my chin and shoulders.

But I LOVE long hair and have dreamed of it for so long. So I'm determined to grow. But I do have moments when I want to chop again.

Maybe if somebody held me at knife point in the hypothetical universe, then I would have my hair cut into a bob. LOL I've never had a bob haircut. Most of my life I've had hair at or past waist length. Only in the past 3 or so years did I have a momentary lapse in judgement and have what I would consider "short" hair.
My oldest sister had her hair in an angled bob and it looked great on her! I don't think I could pull it off though. I've always thought I need long hair to balance out my sharp facial features. ;)

MrsGuther, what style was your hair in at chin length if not in a bob?

MissManda
January 24th, 2011, 08:56 PM
I don't like bobs on me, so if I had the choice of getting a bob or shaving all of my hair off, I would choose the latter.

I remember I was incessantly pressured into cutting my past-waist length hair short when I was 11 or 12. The person in question used very unkind tactics to get me to do it and I deeply regret that I cut my hair. What I got was a stacked bob/wedge type thing that was longer in the front and heavily layered in the back and it was the most unflattering haircut I've ever had. I threw all of the pictures of me with that haircut away because it definitely was not me and like other posters have mentioned, I didn't look happy in any of those photos.

I've seen people that look great in bobs, but I am not one of them. As long as everyone is wearing their hair the way they want to, I'm happy.

I had an inverted bob for... Nearly a decade. It was veeeery unique at the time I first had it done (age 16), and I maintained it in varying lengths. I decided to grow it out about the time Posh spice got one and thus I saw one on every third woman... That's when it stopped feeling like my style : /
At it's shortest it was chin length at the front and half an inch to two inches at the back, longest was mid back at the front and shoulder length but in a gradiented, layered cut at the back that I could tease a bit and poof up. It was totally anime hair. I think I have at least one pic of it in my album.

If I got another bob some day, I think I'd get it just above shoulder length with a flattering side-fringe so that I could do more things with it.

Hm... I think I'd get something like Hayden had a couple of years ago. http://trendyhairstylewomen.blogspot.com/2010/03/bob-haircuts-for-women.html

I actually love the second cut on that page too. All I know is that I had my hair at chin length, all one length, when I was about 12, and it is not a good look for me. I'd need some layers, for sure.

If I HAD to cut my hair into a bob (even for one day) first, I'd cry, then I'd choose a layered even length bob (20's style) since the shorter in the back longer in the front bob & I don't get along.

Honestly, I've been looking at bobs more and more lately and having such an urge to cut! I will brave it out, at least until I've reached tb and maintained there for a little while, but it is sooo tempting!

My favourite bobs are actually ones I would probably never maintain ... the blonde, curling-tonged wurls, look which would be high maintenance on me! I love love love Jenny Frost's (here: http://i2.cdnds.net/11/02/reality_tv_snog_marry_avoid_jenny_frost_01.jpg) and Rachel Riley's (here: http://img691.imageshack.us/i/0308094.png/).

On a slightly more practical note, I was watching Friend's reruns the other day and Rachel/Jennifer Anniston had a really cute 'long bob' look at one point ... not 'The Rachel', but something blunter and longer. Maybe like this: http://www.judiciaryreport.com/images/jennifer-aniston-photo-2.jpg although it wasn't as primped and volumised in the scene I was admiring it. If I were to cut, it would likely be more like this for practical reasons.

Hee this is funny, I've had a million variants of the bob, starting in about 1985 with a longer somewhat Veronica Lake-ish one. My fave was probably the inverted curly one I had about 6 years ago when I "reclaimed" my natural texture.
But my hair is the best now ;)

I had a chin length bob by parental decree when I was eleven and hated it with a passion. It was absolutely *not* me. I would never willingly go that short again. A slightly above the shoulder bob might be fun to try if it was cut or knife fight, though. I have done that legnth in a faux bob, and liked the look for a couple of hours, but much better to have my long hair back when I take it down.

I've been fighting the urge to cut my hair into a chin length blunt (for the most part) bob, all because of Arizona Muse! Blast! I'll put up a bunch of pics of her in my public album. It's just the perfect short haircut to me, and I have the same color and texture as she does, too, so this has not been easy lately.. :p Especially since my scissors are always sitting in their little fabric case in the bathroom drawer... I had a dramatic, chin-length/shaved back bob with a heavy fringe for years and loved it. Sometimes it was red, sometimes black, sometimes purple, and sometimes a combination. It was kindof film noir/femme fatale style. And yes, I was pretty goth at the time.

If I was going to have a bob for a day today and get my real hair back tomorrow, I think I'd go for a similar cut, but with more layers, and make it platinum blonde. And maybe the longest/underneath layer could be something crazy-bright and just peek out.

Wow, thanks for all the replies! I figured I'd get some, "I'd rather shave it than get a bob haircut." No problem :)

My wife had a bob twice before I met her*. Once in December 2006 and once in January 2008. First was a blunt, one length bob at her chin. The second was chin length in front. The back was a half inch or so and layered. The top layer 4 inches or so.

Sometimes I really wish she would cut it back to a bob until I realize that she is growing it (for now). :)

*I have known her for 16 years, mostly when younger. We lost touch and reconnected in 2009, married 14 months later :)

If I had to, say it was a life-death situation...I don't know. Whatever would work with my face shape (roundish square) and my hair type (curly and poofy). I can't imagine any bob hairstyle looking flattering on me without straightening the heck out of it everyday. :/

Now, if I had a different face shape and hair texture, I'd love to try a short, sleek 1920s bob with short bangs. Some women look absolutely gorgeous with that style.

I've had a chin-length bob, and it sort of looked like Clara Bow's (1920's movie star) hair because it was curly. It was cute, but a bit anachronistic for the early 1990's. I've always wanted a straight classic bob like Louise Brooks (also a 1920's movie star), but my hair just doesn't do straight.

I had a chin length bob once. It was awful. The ends were right where my waves were starting to come in, so one side curled under and the other side flipped out. If I had to get a bob, I would keep my hair as long as I could while still being a bob, but really my hair doesn't look decent until it hit shoulder length.

I had a bob for years and this was my favorite: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=30093434&l=41be3160ea&id=1442445411

It was slightly undercut to encourage the ends to turn under, and angled from back to front. Looked great, and my hair was entirely virgin! But longer is easier to do.

If you HAD to cut your hair into a bob, what style of bob would it be and why?

Blunt cut, hair all one length. :)

I did it three years back when I got serious in my attempts to grow my hair out. My hair had three different lengths back then and I went one last time to a hair stylist to get it all evened up. Since then I have never visited a hair stylist again since they always cut more than I ask for.

It came out pretty ok! My "fine" nordic hair looked much thicker. :-)

Now, three years later my hair is about BSL. A bit longer than on my avatar pic to the left.

This was the bob three years back:

I read your post and thought, 'That is my hair, exactly', and then I saw your hair type and said No wonder! :p I love the -thought- of having a great bobbed haircut again, but the reality is that I style my hair in no way whatsoever, so it would look like you describe every day.. instead of being it's awesome longer self that always looks good without doing anything to it. :p ;)

Oh yeah.....I forgot about that.....my hair does that flippy thing too at that length.....I always got an in-out flip instead of out-out or in-in.

<--------see avatar picture.

I had a bob in January of 2009.
I liked it at the time but growing it out SUCKED. I met my boyfriend that same month. Our first date my hair was a big longer than shoulder and by the second I had the bob. He still prefers it to my hair now (see album). I like it long though!

Collarbone length, just slightly longer in the front. I had it like this a couple years ago and enjoyed it, but I like my long hair better.

It is my DH's most loathed of styles, so I'd probably lose him and my hair. For some reason, bobs really rub him up the wrong way; something must have traumatised him in his youth. I've also noticed that bobs can attract the same types as super long hair, but it's harder to conceal a bob from unwanted attention.

I'll take the other option. Whatever it is.

Jaw bone length and straight, like Cameron Diaz in There's Something About Mary.

I used to have a bob for years. Bang and shorter in back and longer at the sides. Very flapper looking. I was always told it was the perfect hair cut for me...

I had an inverted bob (I think that's what it's called, with the front longer, kinda angled.

With a half-up so that the longer pieces is in the back mostly (with blind cane and all :p):

Mine would go into an insane amount of curls, so I would probably do all the same length and clip the front strands back.
I'm hoping I never have to do that because I have a big head! Short fat hair is not going to help me!

Then I'd go for a straight chop at chin, all even. But I guess my rolls would go wild so it's likely it would be more of a "hedgehog"-style.

I like the second pic, too! But there's no freakin' way my hair's thick enough to do that! A wig would do, I guess?

I'd need some layers, for sure.

ugh.. if im getting a bob im getting japanese thermal reconditioning too..
when my hair is short it flips, i was born with farrah hair genes.. some of us are, but it has no place in this decade..

so once my hair was very straight i would go for this (http://beauty.about.com/od/shorthairstyles/ss/bobcuts_5.htm)

but as ive said, my natural hair texture doesnt work with a bob, too much flippy waviness

I would definitely get a long one length bob, no bangs or anything. I have always wanted one of these, but when i finally got it a few years back, it just looked wrong on me. I might have been because i had little bit of a fringe, so it didnt look as straight and sleek as i wanted it to.

Haha! OMG, I look horrid in bobs. Remember the 80's "triangle head"? Yeah, that's what happens to me.

But seeing as how this is hypothetical.... I'll say I'm getting a bob and I have beautiful sleek, straight shine-y hair, so I would be getting the inverted, sassy thing.

I would totally choose a long bob, shoulder length, with long, full, straight across bangs! Like Jessie J in Do it like a dude I love that sharp look! And I would have fun with styling it! :D

I once had a bob like this (https://i.pinimg.com/736x/70/06/81/700681938efcd381675e610e87b9964d.jpg). I absolutely loved it, I would definitely go back to a bob like that but I'm too lazy to maintain short hairstyles. Not sure what count's as a bob though, would my hair earlier this year (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=42296&d=1597281924) count as one?

The last couple bobs I had were "graduated" in the back. Not with an undercut, but actually the stylist graduated it with scissors. It was skill, mad skillz that that man had. I went to him twice and he was amazing. Best bob-cuts I had. Of course, I had the thickness for it, so he really "worked" with my hair, something that no stylist had *ever* done for me before, so I was really shocked and pleasantly surprised. Other stylists just cut and wanted to thin out to make it look good.

And the cuts were 40 euro. He didn't even charge me more, and it wasn't an easy style to cut!!!

I don't think I've ever had a bob in my life but I've always liked a chin length blunt hemline cut that's a little stacked, all one length with no bangs. Also sleek and straight.

I actually wanted it so much that I finally did it in the end - so I went TBL to waist, then to BSL, SL at some point, then I redid lob couple of times and here I am with a curly bob, slightly inverted and... I think I'm going back to long hair now. Of all these bobs/lobs I prefered longish inverted lob, just touching the shoulders. A short bob is not really for my, but oh well, I guess I had to try. 🙄

Once upon a time when I was a college student, I had a textured, angled bob – nearly to my nape in the back and a little longer than chin in the front, which was absolutely adorable.

Downside: needed to be maintained very regularly! Thankfully, I had a friend working her way through school as a hairdresser in a chain salon and since it wasn't very busy and she only got paid by the hour, she did all her friends' hair for free. :disco:

I Have had my hair cut into a bob and it was as much "me" as long hair. It was sort of a messy layered bob with longest layers at chin length and shortest at "neck" length. Sometimes i actually miss that style.
