View Full Version : The smell of henna - wonderful or horrible:

I'm sorry if this has been asked before.
I absolutely LOVE the smell of henna, it's like freshly cut hay. I've met a few people who feel the same, but most of the mixes I've seen or people I've talked to add something to modify the smell.
So of the henna-heads here... how do you feel about the smell of henna: love it, hate it, indifferent to it? :)

I've just mixed up my first ever batch of henna and I like the smell - it reminds me of my rabbit's food pellets!

I read a lot about people hating the smell so I was expecting something yukky, I don't get why so many people hate it so much. Weird.

I do like the smell when it's the mix and even while it's on my head, but I don't like the way it lingers in my hair for days after I've hennaed. I put quite a lot of ginger in there and even then it sticks. I don't really think that's what hair should smell like.

I don't really like it. I mix my henna/cassia with a chamomille tea, and that makes it better.

I love the smell, I usually prefer not to mix it with essential oils. But obviously I wash the smell out before I leave because many people do not like it.

Alfalfa hay... that's why it reminds me of rabbit food then! My bunny has some compressed alfalfa blocks that I use as treats occasionally which he really likes. :)
Hopefully none of my friends will hate the smell of my hair this weekend!

I hate the smell, though I have only used it once. Mixed up my second batch today, and dislike the smell even more than the first time. So much, in fact, that I had to hold it at arms length to mix it as the smell was making my stomach a little unsettled. Luckily adding powdered cloves to the mix coveres/negates the smell for me.

I love the smell of my hair after a looong session with the henna. The fragrance is kicked up again at the following few washes, it reminds me of earthy perfumes like patchouli :D I have been using plain old yemeni mixed solely with water and left till dye release before a very long dye session.

I don't mind the earthy, grassy smell while the henna is in the mixing bowl - but when it's on my head, 24/7, can't get away from it, that's when it becomes quite oppressive for me. And my henna smell doesn't just last for a few days, it's permanent, and becomes even stronger when my hair is dampened or wet. I modulate the earthy-grassy smell by adding cinnamon and cloves to my mix, so it ends up earthy-spicy - which I don't find nearly as oppressive. I wonder if there would be any harm in adding a few drops of patchouli EO to the mix?

Henna is fine, the scent isn't my absolute favorite but it is completely reasonable to deal with. It also reminds me of grassy/alfalfa scents. But boy if you add indigo to it, whew! That, and indigo makes my hair smell for weeks afterwards! Yuck. I definately prefer henna over henndigo any day!!

I don't mind it when mixed with orange juice, but if my hormones are on the 'Everything smells 1,000 stronger than it actually does' mode, I've got problems. Interesting that someone says indigo is stinky, I've only used henndigo mixes but this time I'm using just henna. I'll see how it goes. What I don't like is washes after henna hair, I smell like a wet dog. Lovely...

There are people who do that and I have seen no reports of it being bad. If the smell is too much I say definitely try adding some EO to your mix. :)

At first I hated the smell of it, especially when it was on my head. Then I kinda got used to the way it lingers for a while afterward. Now I miss it when I notice that the lingering smell is gone lol. It still is a little strong when it is on my head, but I don't mind now.
My BF hates the way it smells, both during and after it. The kids only notice the smell when its on my head.
ETA: I have only henndigo'ed, not used straight henna. They seem to smell similar though.

I'm pretty henna-smell neutral. I don't find it repulsive, but it's not the sort of thing I would just love to stick my nose in all the time. (Now the greenhouses on campus that grow corn in the wintertime... I could sit next to their ventilation systems all day! That might have as much to do with it being winter as anything, but that warm green-things-growing smell is like heaven when it's 10F out.)

Something about it is soooo..... comforting. :cloud9:
But the lingering scent afterward for the first several hair washes is annoying. :shake:

I have to admit, I'm now bored of the smell. I applied my first henna 3 hours ago and have been smelling it ever since - I still quite like it but I'd prefer to smell something else right now! I'll add something like lavender EO to my coconut oiling later I think, just to give me some variety.

Love. :inlove: But I do get a distinct boiled spinach smell along with the hay scent. I think my mind associates the henna scent with having fun with dh, since he's the one who puts it on my head and we laugh a lot during that process. :)

Spinach! That made me have an aha moment, I knew there was something else I was reminded of. This may sound weird, but the smell does make me think of that "furry teeth" thing you get with spinach. Yeah. Henna smells like furry teeth.

oooooh, I love the smell of henna! I love mixing it, I love stirring it, I love putting it on, I love rinsing it out, I LOVE how it smells - it smells like warm, green growing things, and I adore it. I don't love the colour, which is hideous on me. :( Wish I had a friend who hennaed, so I could do hers. I miss henna! I guess I could mix it just to mix it ... but then, what to do with all that fab henna?? :)

Yes! I love the henna w/geranium/lavender terp in my first step but the indigo or henndigo of the second step is not pleasant. It's like someone boiled asparagus with frozen spinach. :uhh:

Henna does not smell anything like the hay we harvest every year. The smell of that hay is the best reward for all that work. Having said that I can't say I mind the henna smell. My child disagree. She is quite undisturbed by most smells of agriculture but henna makes her want to live outdoors.

I love the smell of henna!! In the bowl and before rinsing it out it smells so green and wonderful, and then my hair smells like piles of leaves in the sun for a week or so... I love that smell so much; I love warm-ish days in autumn!
The smell does get refreshed when I wash my hair the next 3-4 times too, makes me so happy!

It smells of hay to me- I don't like it much so I add ginger to it to improve the smell a bit, but I don't hate it either, I'm not keen on the lingering smell when it gets damp for the first few washes so I use a strongly scented shampoo and conditioner.

I don't think henna smells bad. It is not a favorite smell, but I also certainly don't mind smelling of henna. The first time I hennaed, I did cut the smell using powdered ginger, since it was mentioned on the mehandi.com pages on henna that some people detest it. Since then I haven't bothered to cover up the smell.
That said, the smell of chemical colorings is horrible! shudder::puke:

To me it smells a bit like cooked courgettes (zucchini), not a smell that I would wear as perfume, but not a bad smell.
To make it a bit more interesting I usually add a drop or 2 of clove essential oil, not more because I know how my skin gets annoyed by all sort of fragrances....it smells like eugenol, a smell that I love (well, it is mostly eugenol...).
I used to add a couple of drop of "sandalwood" essential oil from the Body Shop but I lost the bottle.
A touch of spiciness complements nicely the "cooking veggies" smell

I kind of like the smell (I like how green and natural it is), but DH keeps telling me, "You smell like a plant!" He doesn't dislike it though, just thinks I am weird :P I remind him how much better it is than chem dye smell though, then he totally agrees! I would love to try scenting henna with BPAL perfume oil, but am worried about a) it somehow interfering with the dye and b) wasting a ton of oil that won't cover the henna smell anyway, so I guess I'll just smell like a plant :)

If you add it just before applying the henna it should not have the time to "terp" it changing the colour, and you have to add just one or 2 drops, otherwise you might give yourself a headache with all perfume, or a skin reaction...
You don't want to cover the smell, just make it a bit more "interesting".

I hennaed my hair for the first time this weekend. I expected to like the smell being as I love earthy/musky smells like patchouli and amber... and I also love green smells like grass and hay.
I was NOT a fan when I first mixed the stuff... it made me feel ill and queasy. Oddly, after having it on my head and spending more time around it, I got used to it. I can't say I like it, but my reaction seems to now be less intense and more... so-so at this point.

I've gotten to where I adore the smell of my henndigo (70% henna and 30% indigo). At first it was off-putting and almost made me sick to my stomach. I'm a little sensitive to smells, however, so that's probably why. But now, it's a happy "ahhhhh, all is well with the world again" smell. :)

I don't mind it so much any more. I don't know if it's just that I've got used to it, or if it was something about LUSH henna (that was my first henna and I hated the smell) in particular that bothered me. The extra ingredients they add are probably what I was so averse to.

I've done henna twice so far, and I'm already used to the smell. It does feel a bit weird when I smell it again in the shower a week after the application, but I don't mind it that much. On the other hand, my BF hates it...he says I smell like a dead cat:hmm: But then again, he has a trauma of dissecting dead cats so I understand that. I tried using lavender EO on my second henna and he's dealing much better with it. :cheese:

I really enjoy the smell of henna as I find it earthy and grass/hay like. It reminds me of being on a farm. The only thing is, I know many people hate the smell and since it lingers in my hair for so long I use lavender oil and coconut oil to coat my hair after I henna. I don't want to offend others with my barnyard smell and I don't want others to think I stink.

I totally agree :D, and I look forward to it more and more each time. I do think that it smells better in a mix with chamomile tea better than a more acidic mix with lots of lemon juice. By contrast, I found the smell of cassia on my head to be horrific.

I love the smell of henna. Every time I get mehendi done there's this intoxicating smell of henna and eucalyptus and lemon and I just love it.
It's a very weddingy smell for me.
But I don't know how I'd feel about smelling it constantly for a week or more. I plan to do my first hair henna treatment soon, so we'll see how I feel about it after that :P

I like the smell of henna. Luv the smell of indigo. Put them together and I am a happy happy kitty :joy:Having to set aside an entire day or 2 to dye my hair...... not so much!

Love it! And I love the fact that for the first 2 washes after my last dye session, the henna smell re-ignited in my wet hair, yum :)

I mix my henna with organic apple juice not from concentrate. I love the smell. I think it's one of the happiest smells I know.

Well, I hennaed my hair today, but can’t smell a thing must be because of the natural lemon juice ;-)

LOVE LOVE LOVE.... It smells like a mix of hay and something sweeter too me... The hay smell reminds me of home (I grew up in the country). Most of the time I stick it in my dresser drawers because I like my clothes to smell like henna (I know... really weird...)

I love the smell too - definitely new mown grass and hay. And when I smell it, I anticipate a treat - I get an hour or so to myself, and shiny bright henna roots afterwards. :D

The first time I mixed up henna, I mixed it with a green tea, and I didn't like the smell, but that was mainly because it was a really strong batch of tea and I HATE the smell of green tea.
I mixed up other experimental henna lots to strand test with and I actually really like the smell of henna by itself, and with water, but my favourite is with rooibos tea, because it is the lovely smell of henna, with the gorgeous undertones of rooibos...heaven

Ugh. I hate the smell of henna (which is currently wafting about me since I hennaed tonight). Gingeroot powder helps kill it somewhat, but I forgot to add it tonight.
Has anyone tried beets in their mix to kill the smell?

I don't mind the grassy-haylike smell but I don't like it lingering for a week either so I add eo 's or cinnamon to modify the smell and have it work better with my shampoos and conditioners.

This. My boyfriend commented yesterday about how my hair smells like tea and I have to agree. The henna smell mixed with the chamomile tea I used to blend it smells like my tea cupboard. I honestly quite like it. It's a bit strong when my hair is wet but it's kinda nice when it's dry.

I just did my sister's hair 2 days ago. I thought it smelled good. Not at first when I added the lemon to it to dye release, but after it had been sitting for a while. The henna smell left over on her head smelled like a good kind of grass, similar to hay. Not bad at all.

At first I just tolerated the smell but now it smells comforting and almost therapeutic.
And the first night after you've hennaed the smell is fresh, warm and I find it relaxing and fall asleep much better than most nights (I'm a very light sleeper)

I love the smell!!! It is a similar type of smell as my father's japanese green tea at first, but has a slightly different quality. I don't really know how to describe it, but I would say that the initial impression is the same untill you smell it for a bit longer and pick up on the undertones. I really enjoy it, although a week of smelling it every night as I go to sleep is a bit annoying at times.

I don't like the smell and certainly not the fact that it lingers in your hair for days! *blech*
I've mixed it with ACV and prefer the vinegary smell over the one when mixed with lemon..
I'll have to add cinnamon to it next time and hopefully it'll be more bearable.

I've always thought henna smells like tea (though to me it smells like black tea), and you're the only one apart from me that I've ever seen or heard say that! :)
Funny because earth, hay, spinach, wet dog (seriously), and many other things have been mentioned, but not tea, which I was just going to say, but then saw your post :)

I don't particularly hate the smell of henna, and I think it's tolerable for the time of the application, it even smells good when freshly made. The only drawback to me is that the smell stays in the hair long afterwards.

I hate it, my mother loves it. It somehow smells to me a bit like tea at times. I just find it quite sickening and it's annoying. I have to help my mom apply it and I just hate to because of the smell (and texture, but I blame myself for that. I don't think I know how to mix it properly) At least it doesn't last very long on my hair after washing it but on my mom's hair, the smell lingers on for a few days. Unfortunately I don't think henna works out for me so I stopped using it but my mother continues to use it after 2 years.

I love, love LOVE henna. Everything about it. The smell is earthy (not nostril burning like chemical dyes), it covers most of my gray (I say most because my gray is beyond stubborn), it doesn't irritate my scalp, my hair looks great (both the color and condition). What's not to love? Nevermind that it looks like something that came out of the wrong side of an elephant.

Love it too. It is such an earthy, natural hay smell. I don't mind it at all.
It reminds me of the scent of the fields when they harvest the hay crop. A very nostalgic scent.
Oddly though - the very first time I used henna I don't think I liked the scent. It was the second, third, fourth time and beyond that I either liked it or didn't even notice it any longer.

I like the smell of yemeni henna but the jamilla seems strong to me and more overpowering.
Haven't tried Raj yet for hair though I have some organic raj from HennaSooq that I plan to use for my next henna. Will be interesting to see how that smells.I tried the new yemeni that sold out and that was very mild in smell, as previous yemenis tended to be.

I absolutely love the smell, it reminds me of tea and dried hay... My SO in the other hand hatees it so much that he has asked me to stop hennaing my hair :( I cannot go back to chemical dyes so I am going to try a conditioner glaze-thingy... If that does not work I guess he will just have to deal with it... I dont really know what else to try :(

I like the smell-- it smells like dried grass to me, and I have always liked the smell of both freshly cut and also dried grass. It does smell slightly sweet to me also.
It smells a heck of a lot better than the way my hair smelled after I used chemical dyes! I used to hate the way that my hair smelled for a few days-- now I don't mind the henna smell at all-- quite to the contrary I rather enjoy it.
It is a relaxing smell to me.

I haven't actually used henna, but I imagine cassia to have much the same smell. I like it. I also like cloves, so sometimes I'll add clove powder to my mix. It makes my hair smell heavenly for days.
