Bun Curls

Ok right now I put my slightly damp hair in a sock bun, I'm hoping it'll turn out, as I've tried this method tons of times before. It usually looks like a frizzy mess after I take it out. My hair has layers so its hard to roll the sock bun up, it doesn't look all smooth and perfect, it looks messyer and more bunched up. What am I doing wrong?

I found the fully rolled sock bun didn't give me very neat bun curls. They were pretty tight, but not something I could just shake out and leave the house with.

I get much more success from just doing a cinnabun on top of my head before I go to bed, slightly damp or even dry with a little leave-in in it, and when I wake up I have the exact curls and waves I love.

Yeah I've suffered other failed attempt at bun curls lol I'll try the cinnamon!
