ATM, my hair is a couple of inches past shoulder in the back, with chin and earlobe length layers around the face. It's not quite long enough to hold the shorter layers in a french braid, and while pigtails have worked in the past, I think they make me look like Pippi Longstocking.

Ponytails and buns aren't compatible for floor work. I would love to hear suggestions on what I could do with this mop on my head. :)

can you do double french braids? i then combine the two braids into a single braid in the back.

These are threads that talk specifically about yoga (ok, one is pilates ;).

There are also many general exercise threads that could help too.

ETA: I just noticed the Pippi Longstocking comment. It's yoga; if a style works then just wear even if it feels a bit daft. Once you are into your practice you probably won't care about your appearance.

I often wore two pigtails so I could throw them wherever I needed, and that was on hip+ hair; yes, I probably looked daft. Meh.

I wear pigtails and a stretchy headband to hold back the shorter layers for yoga currently. I doubt anyone in your class cares if you look a little like Pippi Longstocking.

When I was doing yoga regularly, the absolute best styles were two braids of whatever sort. They were the only things that didn't flop into my face or make a huge pillow or lumpy things under my skull when laying on the floor. Even better than just two braids was braiding them angled to prefer falling in front rather than in back.

You could try heidi braids instead if you are too adverse to the Pippi thing.

You might try a French banded ponytail, where you use multiple elastics down the back of your head, adding sections of hair as you go, and then secure the length with a number of elastics as well. Maybe this would hold your layers more securely than a French braid. Good luck!

I've tried several styles, but find a single English braid works best for me. If I start it a little low, it doesn't cause a lump under my head, either. My twin braids get all twisted around and annoy me, but you might not have that problem if you're still around shoulder.

Also, a cloth headband works great to hold back bangs and short pieces.

Thank you all for your replies. I may try the double braids...that sounds like it might work. It's just so awkward right now and the parts that annoy me most are the parts that I can't get to stay in an elastic. So frustrating! :)

And I know it's yoga, and it doesn't matter what you look like...except if the hair isn't comfortable, the practice isn't either.

Namaste.
