View Full Version : Maybe I am "over" long hair?

I think I may be 'over' long hair. This is a weird concept for someone who has been on LHC since 2005 and growing since then, not to mention someone who decorated her vanity last night by putting up the hairtoy holder and a string of 16 Ficcares. Bear with me. I am well known for making outlandish hair statements and regretting them 2 weeks later. I have rules this time. I've promised my BF I'm not going to cut, even if I want to sooooo much, until August. That ties in with my 'August 2011' rule in my sig.
I'd keep it long enough to be able to do twin bunches - because I've found Puppycatmeow on etsy and she sells fake hair. I fancy keeping select hairtoys (custom Nightbloomings & LadyIdun, 1 or 2 Ficcares, Grahtoes and Quattros) using them through the fake hair-buns, selling the rest of the collection, then chopping the rest of my mop.
I'll then be able to:
- use up all my shampoos and conditioners without worrying that I'm using the wrong thing or using cones too much or whatever
- use products in my hair without worrying I'm wrecking it, and make it rock-chicky as well as sleek
- straighten or blowdry once in a while if I want to without worrying that I'm ruining my ends
- have a 'choppy' look without my length looking ratty
- wash and go out without having long ends dripping down my neck and back
- do the 1930s looks that I like so much including a marcel wave
- not worry about thin ends (the longer my hair gets, the thinner it looks)
The last one is pretty important to me. I take good back of head shots, but I promise my hair is brushed to within an inch of its life and then carefully combed into place to get that thick blunt hemline.
For parties, evenings out, events etc I do my hair, brush it, it looks nice and full and thick - and then I go maybe a half hour and my hair is not just slightly piecey but hanging in pieces. Stringy even. Lank. I'm not over oiling, or over conditioning. It's just how it goes. It just hangs there and has no movement. Don't tell me to get layers - I hate them. They make my hair look thinner, whatever they claim to do for fine hair they don't do it for mine.
So:
- I'm making a list of pros and cons.
- I'm noting every day in my diary when I think "I want shorter rock chick hair!" and every day when I think "I want my long natural hair!"
I'm not upset about this, BTW. Just thinking. But I don't think my hair is ever going to be what I want it to be when it's long. Maybe it will get to BSL by August and then I'll reconsider. Maybe. But it's just as likely that I'll cut it and sell my stash (apart from some favourites) and stick to my fake hair. It feels very odd to be considering a proper cut. Even odder since my BF doesn't mind and actively thinks the shorter hair would be sexy and cute. I'm so used to him saying 'no, keep it long'.
I feel so drab with flat, hanging-down hair, and so fugly with it all scraped back. (I've tried Nightshade's poof which is OK, but I could still do that on shorter hair. I'm definitely going to keep it long enough to do half-ups and rockabilly pomps.)
Can I get opinions from people here? Just as a discussion? And please try to avoid just deciding by looking at my sig/.avatar. Honestly, it only ever looks like that for photographs. :(
Thanks :)

If you want to have fun and enjoy short hair then go for it. If your siggy pic is an accurate representation of your length then a bob could grow out in a year or so, and I'm not sure what twin bunches are but google images tells me its pigtails?
I'd say if August comes and you still want to try it then go for it. It's better to just go for it instead of wondering "what if I like short hair better". You shouldn't feel like you're a slave to your hair.

It sounds like you're mostly tired of putting in the effort and not reaping the result you want, which is normal. If your hair was exactly like you'd like it to be, maybe you wouldn't want to cut it?
Before making the decision though, I'd try talking to a hair stylist, and someone really good. At LHC we tend to avoid them, but I have one that I really like (even though he isn't the best at managing long hair) he can cut just a quarter inch if it's what I want and tell me what will work and won't on my face and hair. So, I'd try to find someone honest. If your hair is giving you problems with thinning, rock chick hair with lots of tends and layers in the hair might also not work.
Another thing to consider is that short hair can actually be more work than long hair. Unstyled short had can't be swooshed back in a braid or ponytail, it needs gel and often a blowdryer, especially cuts with volumes and textures.
If I were you, I would try to get a wig of the cut you'd like and wear it for a few days. That way you can decide if you like the look and if it's worth cutting.
Good luck with your decision though, no matter which one you take!

You mentioned why you want to cut your hair, but not why you don't want to.
I think that says a lot :grouphug:

I agree with the others in that, if you come to August and find that you still want to cut your hair, you should. If you change your mind, you can always grow your hair another time - it never stops growing. :)
You have a good plan in place, so go ahead. :) I would suggest also that (if you have the funds) you buy a wig that's like the hairstyle you want, so you can test-drive it in the meantime.

Oh, I'll definitely be sticking around here, there's no chance of me leaving :)
I have a shortie wig. It's a bit 'neater' and shorter than the cut I fancy, but it's not bad. And it has a fringe. And it's the wrong colour  But I like it. Pardon the messy theatre dressing room, though.

Don't worry, you're not the only one feeling frustrated. But I think what you have planned is a good idea, by waiting until August and seeing where you are at.

I only have my avatar and sig picture, Pinchbeck.
This is one from Facebook from the back showing how it separates and goes piecey. This is early in the night and it's already getting flat, lank and 'blah'. I don't have any bad ones because it makes me avoid cameras!
I know it's shiny and a nice colour but I dont think that's enough any more.

You know I see in your haircare stats you say you're using oil shampoo with baby shampoo? I read the oil shampoo thread and it said NOT to use baby shampoo with the oil shampoo recipe. Maybe you'd see improvement if you tried a different shampoo?

I'll then be able to:

6) do the 1930s looks that I like so much including a marcel wave
7) not worry about thin ends (the longer my hair gets, the thinner it looks)
My response to each item from above (each member's will be different, as always!):
Item #1: If I kniew my shampoo and conditioners had cones in them I would buy a cone-free version and use my cone laden products for house cleaners.
Item #2: You can wreck your hair no matter how short or how long it is.
Item #3: Ends can be ruined at any length...but a shorter hair cut is maintained more often thus having those ends cut off more frequently so it appears there is no damage.
Item#5: If your ends are dripping, use a towel to gently absorb as much as you can!
Item #4: Wouldn't a choppy look mean incorporating layers? I may be wrong here.
Item #7: Do you trim your hair every few months to keep your ends blunt? I cannot tell from one photo.
These are just things to think about.:p

Your hair looks cute here. My hair also splits off into pieces. I will have some fall to the front while the rest of my hair stays at the back.
Of course, it is your decision (I feel like a new look every now and then and decided to layer my hair five months ago) and it will be neat to see what it looks like in August. You'll have a lot of growth.
To determine if your hair is really thin, measure its circumferance.

Ok so, I too often have this feeling, less so lately I guess but still.
I do love that wig you posted on you, it suits your face shape, and I think that the critical thing is being happy! It is not about long is right and short is wrong for me. I have never had hair below BSL, so I might decide that is enough for me, I don't know. I might decide to go shorter. I don't know yet. But it is purely personal and what you feel suits you, I think.
I agree, keep from making the decision until August. I keep photos of short celebrity cuts I love in a folder just in case I ever get the urge to chop and want them, but at the moment I am enjoying the length. To me, that photo does not look lank and stringey, but again it is a personal thing and I am only looking at a photo when you've seen it at the end of the night and know whether you are happy with it.
I must say, I still use cones, my hair likes them a lot, still use dilute shampoo, and occasionally still blow dry because it is b**** cold and wet here at the moment in the UK and I am not walking around with a freezing head. I guess I kind of make my own way, and my hair is doing ok for it. So maybe abandon the list of rules you have for a bit? See if that helps?
I honestly think if you do decide to cut it will look great (by the way thought the dark looked good on you too ;))

The wig is cute :). I think the other members have given some good advice and raised good points. I'll share a little piece of my hair journey, just fyi.
After a perm and chemical coloring damage I was forced to cut my hair to about an inch, and I will never do that again. Since then it has taken so much work to bring them back to life, and after I found the LHC last month my baby hairs around my face are actually starting to come back in! I hadn't seen them in over a year because they had been fried off. I could almost cry I'm so happy to have my little baby whisps back!:happydance: I know damage is not what you are talking about, so sorry for the personal sob story. But I just want to make it clear that short hair has been extremely frustrating and difficult to care for. It doesn't go up unless I plaster my hair with like 1000000 little clippies, and without heat it looks down right unruly! Some hairs flip out, others in, and you don't have enough length for them to lay slightly wavy and down. I agree with Nymph that perhaps your just stuck in a hair rut and if you had your ideal texture/color/condition/length perhaps you wouldn't be considering it. But then again, if you just do a slight cut---to your shoulders for example, you might not suffer from some of the shorter bob hair frustrations.
All that aside though, you know best. The wig was very cute with your features.:D

You sound a lot like I did last winter. I was just done with long hair! In January I went from almost knee length to waist, and then in June went very short (see my profile, it's still pretty similar).
I didn't regret it for a second. I love being able to blow dry and flatiron it sometimes with no repercussions. I love how sleek and modern it is, although if I keep it wavy it's big and sexy! I have an amazing hairdresser, that makes such a difference. You aren't near seattle are you? If you are, go to my guy, he's a miracle worker!
When I cut my hair, I was absolutely ready. There were no nerves, no last minute panic, no regrets. Everyone at the salon was freaking out way more than I was. They were all commenting on how calm I was.
I'm not trying to influence you, just wanted to give you my experience. I'm toying with the idea of growing my hair again a little bit. But still no regrets over either big chop.

I guess I kind of make my own way, and my hair is doing ok for it. So maybe abandon the list of rules you have for a bit? See if that helps?
That was my thought too.
Sounds like many of your "cons" have to do with the way you care for your long hair (the concerns about cones and products, and blowdrying).
If a different mode of haircare is easier/more fun for you, why not try that for a while before cutting? Cone, product, style it up, and if you still want to cut, or it wrecks your ends, well, no loss, you wanted to cut anyway. If the "rules" are getting you down, rewrite them.
That said, sometimes a cut is really what you want. I loved my big chop pre LHC, no regrets. Enjoy your hair either way, it's lovely!

I think it’s a good idea you are weighting till 'August 2011'. Looking at the pitcher with the wig, you do look good also with short hair. And I like the pitcher with long hair. Do whatever makes you happy and I’m glad you will be staying with us either way :)

:grouphug: In reading your post, the term that stands out to me is "worry" in it's various forms. It could be that you are not so much tired of long hair as you are tired of worrying about it. If this is correct (and I realize that I might be wrong) it might help if you adopt more of a laissez faire approach, something like the benign neglect many folks advocate here.
What if you could decide to just treat it gently, i.e., skip the know harsh chemicals, don't use heat on it, brush or comb it gently, and basically relax and let it grow.
Your ends honestly don't look thin to me. I think the blunt ends you keep help a lot on that issue. Have you learned to master one or two easy updos? They can make 'difficult' or 'boring' hair downright easy and lovely. And nothing looks more elegant than a nice updo. I'm pretty much hairdo-impaired, but even I can manage a pretty flipped bun, a decent cinnamon bun and a couple of my own unnamed concoctions.
I simply cannot do it, but if you can manage a French braid, they can look really great too. Your hair is a good length for that type of braid. I think mine is just too long (or more likely this is another result of my hairdo-impairment.) You seem like a long hair at heart. Don't give up! Short hair seems like an easy solution, but really, short hair is a lot more work than long hair.
If you do decide to cut, don't feel like a failure. It really is only hair, and it will grow back. You are young and have plenty of time for experimentation if that makes you happy. But I honestly think that if you can relax into gentle hair care, you may find that you can enjoy your hair rather than have it be a cause of tension and worry.
Best of luck! :flower:

Well first off, an impressive WOW to your 16 ficcares :hifive:. Secondly I can totally relate to what you are going through, I have some of the same issues, especially the thin flat problems. I have also had short hair for the majority of my life and I've never even thought about long hair until recently. Short hair can be totally awesome and so much easier to maintain. If you aren't happy with the longer hair, you can always switch to shorter hair. HOWEVER in my personal experience when I have had longer hair and cut it shorter I have missed it, so just make sure it won't be something you will regret later because as I'm sure you know already, it takes a really long time to grow hair, but only a couple of minutes to cut it all off. Good luck and best wishes either way!

This doesn't entirely surprise me.
I think you are heading in the right direction waiting until August, this gives you time to logically think about it and weigh it up properly. You do look great in that wig, so if you do it it will suit you (plus if you change your mind again it'll grow out again so not to worry). Not rushing into the decision means that any life circumstances that could be affecting your feelings won't be there in the future and that means you should have a true account of your wishes.
:flowers: You'll look great whatever you decide to do.

It's good that you're waiting until August to 100% sure that you're really "over" long hair.
Looking at the length pics you have up I wonder if maybe changing the shape slightly could help with your feelings about your hair now. I often find that hair looks great very blunt when it gets lo a much longer length, but that it needs some shape when it is in the stage yours is currently.
What do you think about a round hemline until you get a little longer?
From your post it really seems that you may actually be over the long hair, and that you want to try a completely new look. I do think the wig length really suits you, but long hair would too if you got it to act the way you wanted.
This is so awful of me, but after looking at your collection, I almost want to encourage you to cut, and sell the stash just so I might have a shot at that Nightblooming real leaf stick...lol. If you do decide to sell that one (after much thought), could I have first shot at it??

Calaelen,
I've been sort of inundated with comments about certain hairtoys so I'm saying nothing as yet. I don't know what I will want to keep or get rid of. :flowers:
I have now got (and have had for a week) a U shaped hem. I had one in the past. I don't feel it has changed much about my hair, other than now I have ends that stick out of a braid, lol.

Hi Kherome, thanks for your advice.
My stats aren't always right. At the moment I'm using a Lush shampoo with the oil and that works fine. But the piecey-ness happens whatever I use. Cones, no cones, sulphates, no sulphates, gel, oils. I have a stash of shampoos to use up which are in 4 drawers in my bathroom, lol.

My response to each item from above (each member's will be different, as always!):
Item #1: If I kniew my shampoo and conditioners had cones in them I would buy a cone-free version and use my cone laden products for house cleaners.

Item #7: Do you trim your hair every few months to keep your ends blunt? I cannot tell from one photo.
These are just things to think about.:p
Thanks pinchbeck,
1. I am happy with cones and sulphates and happy without them. I don't really have any shampoos I hate, or my hair hates, except things containing soy and lavender.
2. Oh yeah, I know about that. I ruined my hair at a pixie once due to bleaching.
3. I know my ends can be wrecked at short or long - but if I am maintaining a bob cut, I won't mind the occasional heat style or silicone serum. At this length, I'm always thinking about what it looks like or how it's going to separate, or how tangled it's got.
5. I wrap in a towel at the moment, but it's not feasible when washing and then going straight to work.
4. I don't think so - maybe I could have some face framing layers, but not all over my head.
7. I trim when my hair looks ratty, so generally every 3-4 months. :)
Your hair looks cute here. My hair also splits off into pieces. I will have some fall to the front while the rest of my hair stays at the back.
To determine if your hair is really thin, measure its circumferance.
I've gone from a 4.0 circumference in 2005-2006ish to my current 3.0. I've been on hormonal BC and off it again, used henna, used dye, bleached, goodness knows what. I dont know what caused the thinning. It's still 'normal' thickness, but it's so fine. I don't mind some hair falling to the front and some to the back, but it's the 'stringy' look I dont like. You can see it in that picture.
:grouphug: In reading your post, the term that stands out to me is "worry" in it's various forms. It could be that you are not so much tired of long hair as you are tired of worrying about it. Thanks Deborah,
Gentle care - I use what my hair feels it likes, shampoo/conditioner wise. I love Biolage and Lush (not Lush conditioners!). I never use 'product' other than some oil and Panacea salve, and I always brush and comb gently. I am careful with it. I think being careful with it has made me more of an obsessive about it.
Updos - I mostly do cinnabuns, French twists and log rolls, but my partner doesn't like my hair up very much and TBH neither do I all that much. I have a round face and I am overweight and I feel when my hair is scraped back it looks awful. I cannot do French braids. I wish I could. I have tried and they are messy, and I don't have the time to practise over and over.
What is "a long hair at heart", though, please? Surely if I have short hair I will be the same person, and I have had short hair for most of my life when I weigh it all up.
I'm welcoming all the advice, honestly. I haven't decided what to do yet, although I have had a look at some short hair pictures. I will definitely be sticking with henna and sticking around at LHC whatever happens.

The only advice I can give..is that i would wait about a week or two. If you are still debating a cut, i would do it. You seem to be thinking about a hair cut alot. Long hair isn't for everybody.
But just know, hair takes quite awhile to grow for most people and you may regret it. I would do what you feel is right. It's your hair after all :)

my hair is growing out of the style you are sporting in that wig, you suit that by the way!!!!!!! however that style is great for a while then even that gets boring and you can't do much different when its styled like that! I always have to grow mine longer to be able to do different things with it. If you fancy a change go for it though! hair grows back! if you get bored start growing again! Do bear ini mind that wig style needs a lot of maintenance 6 weekly trims blow drying every time you wash to get the sleek bob look etc :)

To me, it sounds that you have pretty much decided what you want to do. and why not? Nobody has to have long hair. Your plan sounds nice. You have given this much thought.
Hair grows all the time. If you want to grow it out again, you can do so whenever you want.
Your hair looks lovely, and I wouldn't cut it, but it's your hair, and you don't have to decorate my world ;-) I'm sure it will look lovely also when it's shorter.
And if you are "over" long hair, why keep it? Our wishes, dreams and cravings change over time, why not our attitude towards hair?

From everything you've said, it's very obvious that you've been thinking about this carefully so I won't try and talk you out of it. I think your hair looks good now, but I can also see you rocking short hair. I don't feel like a longhair at heart myself. Long hair suits me best, but honestly I've always wanted to be THE shorthair girl, IYKWIM. I'm glad you're sticking to henna, because it looks fierce on you.

^-^ I would do it if you want to, hair will always grow back!
That's almost what, 7 years of long hair?
I think it sounds like you've thought it out, and decided what you want already, maybe you're just looking for confirmation that it's the "right" decision?
I think if you really want to see, maybe you could pin it up into a short style for a few days to see how you feel? I'd hate for you to cut and regret, but it sounds as if you'd welcome the change.
Plus I'm sure the shorties out there would love some company.

Hello Dovetail and anachronic :) this was a thread I started in January 2011. I had a BF, a good job, things were very different then. I cut to a pixie after emotional stress in December 2011, hated it and am growing out again.

When I've felt this way in the past I used to chop (to a bob, twice) but now when I get sick of my length I get rid of maybe 3 inches and feel all fresh and new about my hair. It has new bounce and movement. I just cut 2" off the ends, and it feels and looks a lot better.

Try benign neglect for a while! That might help.
I suddenly discovered that if I put my hair in a braid that it kept me from being tempted to do things to it because it is more trouble for me to do the braid again than it was when I would put it up with a hair stick or scrunchy!
Last summer early I too felt 'tired' of long hair! My hair was just a few inches from waist at that time but the ends were frazzled.
Instead of just having a couple of inches (or less) of ends cut off I opted to cut to a chin length bob.
I loved the bob for about a month or until the weather got hot enough here and the bob grew just long enough and I suddenly found it touching my neck and I found I couldn't put it up!
So since then I've been growing my hair again.
This time however my hair is in much better shape and I am doing tiny trims all along the way so I am only at a little longer than shoulder right now. I also found that if I do filtered water as my final rinse that my ends don't get as frazzled!!!
So perhaps a not so drastic chop might be fun and then you can always cut more off later :D
I just didn't want to get into the cycle of cut/grow/cut... too much upkeep for me :)
But I totally understand the lure of short hair... I look great in short hair too - I have a long neck and I found that people seemed more 'attracted' to me when my hair was short (possibly because i do tight buns a lot lol) - but I like wearing braids and updos and missed that too. And this time when I had 'short' hair it suddenly didn't quite enjoy the methods (soap/acv/oil) that I used on my long hair!!! I didn't know what to do with my shorter hair!!! It needed to be 'styled' or something!!! grrr
When I was younger I would cut my hair off with clippers when I was tired of it to about 1/2 inch to an inch long!!! Then I would let it grow back and get long again (or until I couldn't stand it). I enjoyed all the phases of growing from the very short to the able to be put up and longer... Suddenly one day I would get the urge...

I think there can be a stage for everything.
You wanted long hair in your 20s. Then, in your 30s, you wanted a change. Whether it was this or vice versa, styles and personal preferences change. I wouldn't go from super long to super short in one go. Perhaps try different lengths between the two.
After 7 years of something, it would be easy to get tired of a certain hairstyle.
Have fun with it. It's just hair. (As I get flogged for saying that... but seriously, go with whatever hair fits your lifestyle now.)

That sounds like a good plan!
- not worry about thin ends (the longer my hair gets, the thinner it looks)
The last one is pretty important to me. I take good back of head shots, but I promise my hair is brushed to within an inch of its life and then carefully combed into place to get that thick blunt hemline.
Hey, I can never comb my hem line in a way that makes it look thick and blunt :p yours must not be truly thin, or maybe even my current state is awfully thin.

Its normal and I've been there in the past. Now I'm trying a new approach that's thinking of my goal length and aiming to get there.
