View Full Version : How long until you are happy with your length?

Hello everyone,
At the moment my hair is almost at hip, but my ultimate goal will be at least classic.
I do think that i'm happy with my hair when its between hip and tailbone and really feel like a longhair then.
It will take me 3months i hope..So in 3 months i can finally stop obesessing over my lenght.
Tell me, How long do you think it will take untill you are happy with your lenght/hair ,both in inches and time?

I'd say maybe a year since I want my straight hair to be at classic. I'm not sure if that's too much though, I want my curly hair to be at TBL or a little past so.
But I don't think I'll be 100% happy with the length until my layers grow out.
ETA: 6inches. 1 more year!

I would say I'll be completely happy in a year, I want to maintain for a while to get rid of the thin ends and catch up the shorter pieces of my hemline to reach classic.

I'll be happy with my length when I reach 50". I'm at 46" at the moment, so I need 4 more inches. I hope I'll reach my goal in 1 year.

I don't think I will be happy for the upcoming 7 years, because of the dye I am growing out.
I would like to see my length without the dye.
if I look at length only, I think I will be happy with classic length.

I thought I would be happy with it reaching BSL, but it does feel too short. I never thought I would say this.
Something tells me I will grow it to classic and be happy with it then, oh boy... it will take many years. Like 5 or something :(

As my longest bits are still 2-3" above waist and I'm shooting for tailbone or classic, I've got at LEAST a year, if not longer. A year may be a conservative estimate because I don't, as yet, know how fast my hair grows or how many inches it'll be till TB.

I'm happy with the length now, but not so much with the condition of the very ends. But I'm scared to trim them because then I might not be so happy with the length anymore. lol! I do need a trim though.
I don't think I will be extra happy with my length until at least waist. That's when I probably will start to think that I have "long hair"....something I've never experienced before.

Four months until I am happy with my length. That is when I estimate that I will be at waist length. Happy growing everyone! Enjoy the journey!

My goal length is to have it back at tailbone. However, I will be happy once it hits BSL again. After that, everything gets a lot easier for me - my hair finally seems to have enough weight to lie properly.

I am very happy with my length at the moment, but another 2 years or so and I should hit my ultimate goal of classic. Though if I cannot handle it that long, I will cut back to where I am now!

I will be happy with my length when all the layers are gone and it's waist. I will be even happier when it's tailbone or so without layers. "Patience is still a virtue!" I am telling myself that. :p

My goal is to be at least to the bottom of my bra strap. After that - we'll see. I could see going for waist.
I am in the No Trim in 2011 club so I expect to reach my goal by the end of the year.

Interesting to see how much it varies.. And also that once you hit a goal, there is another one immediatly.
Now my hair is growing longer i all the time want it longer, i started with waist as my goal then it became classic, but ive seen so many pretty heads of hair that are longer then classic that i now really want to grow as long as it gets..But i do want to keep a good hemline so it will be a very long journey. Happy growing all! X

Um, well I'm "OK" with it now at waist, but to be truly happy with my length I want to be able (not that I WILL, just the ability to do so, mind you) to sit on it, so probably classic. I am hoping to be close to or at TBL by Dec 11. So probably 2 years before I'm sitting on it. I guess...?

Haha I also cant wait till i can sit on it :) I'm gonna try castor oil soon to see if i can get some faster growth

I've never had hair longer than shoulder, and usually much shorter than that. Just getting to APL will be a huge first for me. So right now I'm going to say I'll be happy at APL. (And that will be true!) I should reach it in a year. Whether my goal will change at that point, who can say? Either way I plan to enjoy the journey.

I'll finally be happy with my length, for the short term, when the shortest layer is BSL. Then, I will hopefully be getting rid of all the layers, and my final and ultimate happiness length will be waist. So far XD. I'm estimating about 4 more inches for the layers to reach BSL, and then from there an additional 4-6 inches for waist. So about a year I suppose.

I like where my hair is now, just past BSL - I am noticing people looking at my hair in public and I must say it does a little something for the ego....
I think I'll be happy at waist which should be about a year (no trims in 2011). But, as others have mentioned, it's never long enough. Really? How much difference is there between waist and TB, all things considered.
I don't think I could go hip or classic, although I am amazed and appreciate what it takes to get it there.

I was finally happy with my hair when it was BS and one length. My struggle was trimming the layers and maintaining mid-back. It is past BS now and I am happily growing to waist.

I'm happy with it now, and I was happy with it at around chin length. At shorter lengths I could stick it all in an octopus clip, which was great; recently I enjoyed the Gibson tuck, but I seem to be outgrowing that; now I can pin up a braid so it will stay put all day, and in the future I look forward to trying some of the very cool buns that require longer hair. At every length, I'm enjoying the hair adventure! :)

It might be different for me because I have always worn long hair, and my hair grows unusually fast, but I have been happy with my hair at every length.
At times when the weight was making me feel uncomfortable, or when I did not like the shape or condition of the ends, I just cut some off. Sometimes an inch, sometimes a foot. I don't seem to have the 'urge' to worry about its particular length. It just keeps growing, and I just cut some off when I feel like it.

My mini goal right now is waist length. Ideally I'd like to get a bit past and then have a trim and tidy up my ends (because at that point I'm figuring it will have been over a year since I trimmed) and leave me right at waist. That's another 4+ inches. So we'll see how long it takes. lol. I'm picking back up on my MN treatments, so maybe I can squeeze an inch a month out and get to waist by summer! :)

Right now I'm at Shoulder Blade Length. I had WL and then chopped it all off into a boy-cut (About two years ago) and have been beating myself up for it ever since.
The problem was I had the misconception that my hair wasn't really long at WL so I wasn't happy with it. I cut it off to stop worrying about it and to stop obsessing.
My goal is WL again because I know if I let it grow any longer I'll get neck problems like I did before (I lost 5 pounds when I cut my hair, so unless it's layered or no longer than waist it gets REALLY heavy), and I'm going to KEEP IT THERE! I will not cut it all off again! >.< I'm guessing I'll be Mid-Back around April, and hopefully almost to Waist by Christmas, then I'll be happy!

My hair is only waist. but it's healthy so i'm happy i suppose.
My hair needs to be at least like 34 inches for me to think it's long. my hair is 29inches right now. I'm thinking by the end of summer, i will be pretty happy with my hair :) Let's hope!

I can't wait until my hair gets to and past hip length. I've started a microtrim regimen to get rid of my old layers and bangs and even though I am happy that my hemline is getting thicker, it's somewhat slowing my growth rate down, so I'm trying really hard not to get impatient! The suspense is killing me!
I'm trying to stay patient by reminding myself that a year ago I had rather damaged ends that were breaking off which gave the impression that my hair wasn't growing. I am very glad my hair isn't breaking anymore!

I'm about 6 inches away from my short term goal, and I will most definitely be happy at classic though not done growing for years to come. I figure I should be at classic by, hopefully, this time next year! It'll be my two year anni at LHC by then<3

I do find this whole concept of "I won't be happy until my hair reaches X length" as slightly depressing. I do think there is a real possibility that you hit X length and then you are still not happy - hair has to be Y length and so on. I do think this is part of human nature.
If I was totally honest when I get to TB I will be happier as it is closer to where I cut my hair.

I am happy with the length now. It is waist length, however I find it very difficult to maintain and keep it healthy. I have not cut my hair in about 16 months and I notice my ends are very very dry. Even though I am not happy with that I just can't imagine cutting it, the pure thought makes me nervous. I am debating on cutting it or just letting it grow!

I'm probably looking at another 3-4 years of growth to get where I'll be happy. I'll be "content" when I reach tailbone, I think, because that's where I was when I cut it. I really, really want a braid at least that length so classic is my ultimate goal right now. I will feel like a "long hair" when I reach tailbone :)

Hmmm, I used to have very long hair as a child, then short in middle school, long again in high school and now I'm hovering between shoulder and APL. My goal for the past 3 years has been hip (around 36") but I work at a pool where the sun and chlorine make it VERY difficult to maintain healthy ends past BSL. *fingers crossed in anticipation* I want to hit hip SO BADLY!! :)

I think I`ll be very happy when I get to BSL, with my shortest layers about 3 inches longer (and fewer, close to APL), and with healthy, undyed ends. I think this will happen for me in under a year. I do plan to grow a little longer, but these are my main goals.
...And also when I find a routine that works for me, and I learn to do some updoes.
Hair is very much a work in progress! All will be better in a years time.. ;)
(But I do enjoy the journey).

It seems like I'm never happy with my hair length. When I was at BSL I was sure that waist will feel long. Then it felt too short and I felt hip would be OK, and so on. Now I believe tailbone should be finally long enough and I don't really want to grow beyond that because I like to wear my hair loose and don't want to sit on it.

I'd be happy once my hair is fully caping around my waist, no more layers! That was the worst thing I've done....that, and frying my hair in the front flat-ironing it about a year ago. I'm still growing out the damage :-(

I actually have come to terms to be happy with my hair at all lengths :)
It's a struggle but I'm working on it. It's maybe two to four inches to bsl...it really depends on the day. I should be at a solid bsl by New Years (crossing fingers!)
I will be ecstatic, as its been my first goal for the last 4 years that I have never reached. My ultimate goal is hip..I don't even know if I will ever make it there though.
Might as well enjoy your hair. It makes things alot worse having the attitude that you're unhappy with it for now. It took me three years for that one to hit me though.

I'm pretty happy with it now. I'm about 1 1/2" above waist. I've been to tailbone twice and while I loved it tickling my butt while I took a shower, I didn't like it all that well. I gave myself plenty of time to get used to it but not being able to wear it down comfortably outside my home was the kicker. Now I'm experimenting with the bottom of bra to waist range and with layers. I'm quite happy with it. I don't have to worry about damage as I know I'll be trimming often enough to take care of that. I'm doing fun styles again and I'm wearing it down again when I want to. So some thirteen years into this long hair journey I'm finally happy with what I've got. And growing it is fun again too.

I'm about an inch or two away from proper tailbone (I had a haircut and then I guess some stalling which took me above BCL and kept me there for a while) and I'll be happy with my length then. So about 4 months. It's not my goal which is actually classic, but right now I just feel a bit annoyed that I had an unnecessary cut that was shorter than I'd like. It's a nitpicky thing, admittedly, it's only a couple inches on already long hair. Don't mind me, I'm just being whiny.

September 18th, 2013, 07:27 PM
In theory my brain says six inches because it refuses to acknowledge that it's only 3 inches away even though I KNOW that's how many inches it is to classic. Will I be happy then? I don't know. Will I go to mid thigh and decide knee is the new beautiful and stop there. I doubt it will be that long but I don't know. I am not in touch with myself to be able to honestly answer how long my hair has to be for me to feel like I am complete.

I have no idea. When I started growing my hair back out, I thought I'd be good getting to TBL because there or a bit longer was the last longest I'd had it and I liked it there. Then I got there and wanted more. I'm just now at Classic and I don't know....FTL or longer is sounding good to me. :) So 3-6" maybe, maybe not. lol.

September 19th, 2013, 03:09 AM
I'm 1.5" from waist which was my first goal. The original plan was to stay between waist and hip for a while to cut off dye damage. But I may just go for BCL straight from hip.
So I'll be happy with my hair from Christmas onwards but I won't be truly happy till all the dye is out, which means 20" of hair to chop off. I grow 6" a year so that's 3 years 4 months if I maintain my length.
Another option is to keep growing to BCL and then chop to waist which would be a chop of 7" which would take off the worst of the damage...

I've been to tailbone twice and while I loved it tickling my butt while I took a shower
Hahahah :D </juvenile>
Though I probably won't stop growing 'til mid-thigh at least, I feel quite happy at Classic. That's why I refuse to trim right now even though my ends are fairytaling :)

I'm actually happy with my length every day (my hair is still super short). I'm waiting to NOT be happy with my length really. For me there is something like too long or too much hair (on myself of course! ;-)

My goal is around hip length, but I am pretty content at the length it's at now between APL and MBL. I've always liked my hair length to be a range.

I'm just past waist now (although I have a short torso haha, so I cheated a little), and I'd like to hit hip. I think then I'd be happy. But then again, I'm not unhappy with the length as it is, I just think it'd look good longer as well!

I think I'll calm down a lot once my hair is at APL. I think I'll be truly happy with my hair once it's at least waist length and all virgin. Once I'm considered to have long hair by "normal people standards" I think I'll be satisfied. I really want hip-length hair though! I don't want it too long... long enough to sit on... but I want it LONG nonetheless! Where I live, hip-length hair would be a head-turner for most people. ;p I am glad that I'm past the "short hair" stage and moved on to "medium length"

Since joining this forum, I have been learning to be happy with my hair at whatever length it's at! I have been really excited about how much healthier it's getting lately!
Right now it's a pretty solid collarbone length. I would love for it to be BSL and all one length and healthy!

When I reach waist, that would have been in 3 months if I hadn't cut off two inches to even up my layers (which I definitely don't regret) so now I guess I'll reach my goal in about 6 months.

Completely happy when I'm at 34". But when I'm at 31" or so, I'm happy too. I need like 2 inches more before I can do most buns....

I am OK with my hair now (I am almost at TBL). But to be truly happy with my length I want to be able to sit on it, so probably classic. I do want to keep also a good hemline…So in all probability I will be really happy with my hair in about a year from now. I presume…

I'm at TBL, but not completely happy. I'm giving myself a year to see if my thickness travels down any more. After that I'll re-evaluate whether to stay put, grow to classic, or cut back to waist.

I'll be happy when I reach my goal but I'll be really happy when I have my goal length all in a blunt hemline, which will be a bit trickier :p.

60 inches, I;ll be happy. Knee for me is 50 something inches, but mid-calf is 65. Between those.

I have no idea. Lol! I've only really been growing out my hair for about a year now, and I've gained a good six inches. I'm curious to see how far I can take it.

Umm. Ankle at the moment. That is when I will be happy with my length. I don't think I will pass ankle length as I would like to be able to walk around with my hair loose and not have it touch the floor. I guess ankle is the closest I can get to the floor without having my hair touch the floor.
I wont be happy at any other length just because ankle length is my dream. Everything else seems in my mind to come short.
But you never know... Once I reach my goal length, I might end up with hair longer. I have never had hair that long, So I don't know how I'm going to take it. One thing I am sure of is that I will love it. I just can't see myself hating the length of my hair. Even if it gets every where and stuck in everything. I just can't fathom it.
p.s. I am only at waist. Even if I am short. I really expect it to take at least 7 years for my hair to get to ankle length.

I'm nice and tame. Aiming for around midback-waist length at the moment. I'm currently about APL so the getting the length shouldn't be too hard. The part that will take a while is growing out my damaged, dyed hair. That could be a few years. :/
I'm curious about not cutting my hair at all and just letting it grow and do its own thing. But with my hair's current condition that would be split end city.

Well, I think I'll be happy with my length when I reach Classic. I'm currently at BCL and should reach Tailbone by then end of the year. I plan on getting about an inch trimmed off at that point. I figure I should reach Classic by my 3rd TLHC anniversary next August. Grow hair, grow! ;)

I'm allllllmost at BSL and my ultimate goal is TBL, but I think I'll be happy at WL. I'm hoping 6 months at the most?

I'm actually pretty happy with my length now; I'm basically at a jaw length bob right now, any with my waves/curls, I think it suits my face well and makes me look feminine c: but my dream length would be tailbone, which won't happen for YEARS.

I actually have a childhood picture, when I was like 8 or 10, and I had tailbone or hip length, that is my final goal, but i usually set smaller goals, so I actually feel like I accomplish something.

I won't be happy until I reach a length that I can do numerous braids and a crown braid. So tailbone, is good enough for me.

Right now my hair is between hip and tailbone length, but my goal is now classic length (I just decided that, it's so exciting) but I am quite looking forward to reaching tailbone length. For reaching TBL my hair needs to grow about 1,5". It'll probably reach TBL in january-february 2014, I think.

I've actually just reached the point where I'm finally happy with my length. At 30 inches I'm a good solid waist when dry. My ultimate goal is TBL, maybe classic. But I am SO happy to be out of the never-ending awkward abyss between shoulder and waist. I like my hair at this length. I think it suits me nicely. While I have every intention of growing on to my goals, if for some reason I couldn't grow any longer, I'd be okay with that.

At least three or four years, if I'm being realistic. Of course, if we're talking ultimate goals, it'd be closer to ten.

I'll be happy in a year when I'll be beyond bsl and able to trim more of the older dyed hair off. Very happy in two, probably, when I hope I'll be at waist with great conditioned lengths and ends.

I "thought" I'd be happy once I reached waist, but noooooooooo. Now at hip, I have about 3 inches to TB and 9-10 to classic. I WILL be happy at classic. Once there, I am going to thicken up ends. At the rate I am growing, 10 more inches may take 5 more years. But with recent changes I have made, it will grow healthier and may need less trimming. Hoping to get there in 3 years, by the time I am 60.

My real goal is BSL, but to just be "happy" with my hair and not feel so awkward, I probably need to wait about 1 1/2 - 2 years to reach shoulder/collarbone length. Stupid pixie.

I will be happy to see BSL..and then anything after that is jusy icing on the cake. I'm super close to BSL right now. Hoping to see it by late December or early January. Yeah, once i get there I will stop obsessing about it and move on to just continuing to take good care of it and see what it decides to do.

Hi, Im kissing BSL at the minute, another couple of months should see me there solidly, but hip or TB will be lovely, about 18 months ish maybe. Will be happy to reach waist tho' and if I had to stay there, it wouldn't be a problem, waist is a lovely length, traditionally long!!!
Yummy!!

Actual length, I'm not sure. But I do know I want my high topknot ponytail to reach classic length. Anybody got any idea how long that would be?

I am happy with it now, at mid-back length. I recently layered it to make it less voluminous. In the past, I grew it out to TBL, but that is a bit much for my lifestyle right now. So right now, I am at a happy medium :) I do admit that since I get fairly lazy about trims and such, I will most likely not cut it until early next year so I'll most likely get to waist. I am about 3-4 inches shy from there right now.

Depends what time of the day you ask me  I just washed my hair and let it air dry for like 2 hours until it was just barely damp then applied 3/4 drops of avocado oil, so it's soft, shiny and I'm having a 'my hair actually feels sort of long' day today ;) so today I'm pretty content! (My hair is solid Hip currently). But in general I'll be really happy once I reach BCL/TBL (just started considering TBL today!!), which is like another, hmm, 4 inches max? I'd guess with a trim it'll be around 10 months. Once I get there I may go on to Classic if my hair allows it, just to see but I'd likely cut back to TBL, I like wearing my hair down for special occasions and sitting on it wouldn't be too fun in a restaurant etc :D

I am almost to hip in the back but it still does not feel long to me Im hopeing to reach tailbone by next summer then maybe I will be happier with my length. I also seem to be experiencing a little breakage lately so Im really going to have to give it extra tlc this winter. My hair is kind of u shaped so that may be why it doesnt feel long to me right now :)
