Ok so I have searched and searched and cannot find a picture instructional on on how to do the buns. I think it's a twist bun. I'm going crazy, the youtube video does it once and she does it quickly so it's hard to see. I did it this morning when I first woke up and didn't even think about how I did it and now I can't redo it to save my life!
Thanks you guys <3

LOL. Is it the one that stays up by itself??
I love that one! Can't wait until my hair is long enough to do it. (if we every find out HOW its done)

lol yes! It's the one that they wrap around their arm and pull and tuck... and no hair pins or anything! I was hoping there was a way to do it with hip length hair but I can't seem to find anything shorter then like mid thigh length hair. Maybe I have a couple years to do it. But I love it so much! I wish I could figure out how I did it this morning I can't redo it still and it's driving me insane!!!

Could you post a link? It's hard to figure out what they're doing when there are so many videos.

this is the one I watch it only shows her doing the bun. I can't get the tuck... I'm afraid of ripping my hair.

Goodness, she has six times as much hair as I do :-(

And what an odd video overall....

I agree, very odd, but I want to do that bun too now.

OK, that first video is seriously geared toward the f*tish crowd! But anyway, that's pretty much how Hypnotica does a Nautilus bun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tS-BQ5OMV2Y). (My method is topologically identical, but the technique is more like a twisted lazy wrap.) Here's someone else doing one. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPnGIMog2_A) I don't recognize her, but there are a lot of longhairs on the web, and not all of them are here.

I wish i had her hair :(, the bun doesnt look easy to do.

IndigoAsh
January 14th, 2011, 12:03 PM
ah hah! So it is the exact same thing but they're compensating for so much length in the vids we posted with the Indian chicks. YAY! So glad there's a name for it. I think I need more length cause I get about a two inch 'tail' left from pulling my hair through, it's so thick.

I wish I could help. I'm Indian, but my hair is only at BSL right now. But I'm aiming for classic length in 4 years, hopfeully sooner. I can only cross my fingers that my hair will look that good! :)

I'm not indian, but I have hip length hair & figured out how to do the bun. It looks a little smaller, but it's the same thing.. I'm wearing it to work to see how it holds up. I'll try to make a tutorial in the next couple days. It is. Very close to a nautilus bun, but with a little twist

Her hair in the video is just so gorgeous! I too would love to do that bun. She makes it look so quick and easy. I just can't get over how gorgeous her hair is though. I have some serious gene envy right now!

That was a cool video.:) Great hair that lady has. It looks natural, like she doesn't use silicones. Her hair wasn't slippery and that is part of why she could put it in a bun without any tools to hold it in place.

Here is another woman doing the same bun except with a braid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cS8Eecj3UmY&feature=related

I like this one because you can see the henna and the oil in her hair.

Hmm, I wonder if henna helps their hair to look so thick.

Wow fabulous hair! That last video is just about a foot short braided then where my hair is now, so I guess I fall into the category of the first video (the non f*tish one lol). I've just started using the knot but I am still having trouble because my hair won't stay in a knot. Now just to get the tuck part down. Great share!

I finally tried and my hair is waaay too slippery. And I have too little, lol.

:thud: indeed.

I think one needs thick hair with Indian texture to be able to pull that off. My hair is way too fine, thin and slippery to manage that. meh :(

I don't use shampoo or conditioner so my hair is not slippery and I can do the Indian bun and my hair stays put. Yeah!

This is the upside to having tangly hair;)

Mind you, my bun is very small in comparison to theirs.:p

Hm. Motivation indeed. I'm going to have to buy my hair products first, get my split ends trimmed out, then embark on a new journey... grow my taper out I should've never gotten one in the first place smh

I can't look at the bids right now, but if it's the bun I'm thinking, it can be done with any hair as long as the length is enough.

The variables to adjust are how big you make the "loop" (it needs to be able to contain your coiled length) and how many times you need to wrap your length around the base. The loop needs to be big enough to hold the rest of your hair and small enough to hold it. I hope that makes sense. The loop provides the tension to hold the bun. As for the length, just keep wrapping it around the base until it's all coiled up.

Once I learned how to do this, it's a lifesaver and usually my go-to updo. Hope this makes sense.

Sure! lol, it will be more realistic alright.;) I'll take a picture. I don't know how long it will take me but I will show you what it looks like on fine, thin hair.

Yeah:) thats exactly right. I put one in my hair yesterday and it stayed so tight all day it actually gave me a bit of a headache. So yeah, it works.:D Yeah! Awesome bun!

I managed to do it but it turned out a little bit loose.
I used this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RwfbPkTfRI&feature=related) its alot easier as it's in kinda slow motion .
ETA: Thank you OP for sharing this,i always wanted a style without hair pins or scrunchies.

Haha I took a picture of my bun it seriously looks so lame,it's about 1/4 of the size of one of her 2 huge buns.anyways here's the link to my album ---> http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=5876&pictureid=93704
BTW i apologize for the horrible condition of my hair lol

That video is so much easier to see whats going on! It seems slightly different from the others though, as the tail is wrapped around the base before the loop is pulled over. (instead of the tail being pulled through then wrapped around) Ive tried them both but my hair is just slightly too short! I cant wait until this will work for me =)

And your bun doesnt look small at all, it looks great!

The first video looks like Leia's Swirly Bun, but done with extremely thick hair. The slow motion video is where I learned my favorite bun from, which I think is pretty much the same as the nautilus bun. I have videos of myself doing the buns I mentioned, but of course my hair is not thick! I also changed them a little to work better for me.
My version of Leia's Swirly Bun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wopj8CGdaoQ)
Indian Nautilus type bun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVCOpXWkDak)
My hair won't stay up by itself.

These are two different buns. The first one I quoted is similar to a nautilus, the second one is some sort of knot bun.

I tried this bun in the shower with conditioner in, it can be done even on pretty slick hair, you just have to get the feel for it.
