View Full Version : - Straightening hair without heat ?

- I found one way which I don't like anymore, which is to seperate my hair into 6 tight braids after I've showered .

Then when it's dry, the next day, I open the braids and it looks like weird Barbie hair and after I sleep on it, it's straight .

I'm looking for other curlies or wurlies that have other methods that work maybe in a quicker way, or whatever works really .

I like down playing my curls atm, having straight hair/little bit wavy is ideal now ^^

I tried the sockbun but that didn't work for me . .

I see you have 2c like me, you could try a wrap overnight on normally air dried hair. There are lots of tutorials on youtube.

ETA: I just saw some pics from your album and looks 3a, if that's air dried, you would find better results with slightly damp hair.

You have such pretty curls. Why fight it?

- I like change, and at the moment I like straight hair on myself . Or more wavy .
It's not as if I want to completely kill my curls, I'd love to have my hair curcly once it gets to the length I want, but for this length, straight looks better ^^

That's how I feel too. I love curls, and wish I have a bunch of them past APL! But for now I like my pony waves better.

A big fat french braid will pull mine into loose waves. If I do it wet and then let it down when it's slightly damp and gently comb it it's pretty straight.

I find my hair is more willing to be straightish if I oil it a little heavier than normal. If it looks greasy I can use a dusting powder like dry shampoo to freshen it up without putting the curls back.

I would always damp bum, that would create straighter hair on the top, and loose waves on the bottom. This only worked around BSL, it got to be too much bun twist when my hair got longer. I was doing a cinnamon bun.

I've had really good results from wrapping my hair overnight; I had a thread about that somewhere I can dig up for you if you like and there are pictures in my album and in my blog. It takes a whole night to work, but only about 10-15 minutes to put up and then your job is to go to sleep, so it's easy :)

I also damp bun, fingercomb out, brush gently, rebun in a different spot, repeat until hair is dry. This is good for retaining volume and a little kick at the ends for me, but it's a lot of handling. I also find what cataphract says to be true - more oil, fewer curls.

I love your hair; it is beautiful, but I *totally* understand your quest for straight hair :)

Two rope braids overnight (starting at the ears level) make my hair not exactly straight but very slightly wavy. The key is to braid tight but directing it down instead of overlapping strands, if that makes sense.

I used to brush my hair while it was drying after a shower, and it would dry much more on the straight side.

I'm sorry I have no answer (being a straightie) but I really had to LOL at the title. I am sure it's only a typo - you meant heat right? I don't usually point these things out but I got such a mental image . . . :D

Straightening hair without head ?

Yeah this is funny, actually I looked in here because I was intrigued by headless hair and its ways :D In a way it worked perfect!
But I think it's just a typo and don't be too severe to us non-English speakers! :waving:

Yes, sorry I am sure it's a typo and we all make them - but it was just hilarious to me. :)

- Oh yes, wrapping, forgot that existed . I've never done it . . I'll see, I share room with a partner, dont want to do things that make me seem too hair obsessed [he already has an inkling . .] !

- I will try the french braid way today, running a bath now already ^^
My hair gets curlier when oiled, it just loves the moisture :/

- Ahh . . you mean bun, not bum, right ?
Idk, whenever I bun my hair, it doesn't dry for days, which always worries me . I don't want to damage my hair .

- I'd love to see that thread !
I will check your album and see if I can find your blog ^^
I'm just worried I might look silly, if I slept alone at night I usually look silly in different hair do's, but idk, don't like looking silly infront of my partner :P

Thank you !

- Oh I actually used to do this method before, I remember, it would come out as corkscrew waves though, which I thought was cool . I think mine came out different because I put a lot of oil and other moisturising things in my hair before doing it . .

- I wish I could ever brush my hair when dry, but it just turns into a big fro, usually I just brush my hair dry if I am going to put henna in it or dye it other ways . Otherwise I only brush it wet, coevered in conditioner . [I know brushing hair wet is bad for it, but that's the only way that works . :S]

HA HA yes, like straightening hair without head :P little letter slips!

Eh mine did take about 24 hours to dry, but it was always super soft afterwards, I don't think it is damaging.

you cant imagine what I thought reading this title while still half asleep. :D

The doobie/wrapping method works for me (see album for results) for straight hair.

Otherwise I find that dry bunning pulls out my curl to more of a very loose wave.

- I finally did it and it made a huge difference in the front hairs, the back was still very curly, must look over my method .

I had it in for 20 hours but idk, since then been losing big chunks of hair, more than i get when i brush my hair, it could make sense if just all hairs i'd lose usually fell off but idk, it was much much more than i've seen come out of my hair in ages :S

From your signature picture you do have waves, actually. Those are not curls. I wish I had 'curls' like that! I am dreaming about finding a way to make my curls go wavy like your hair actually is in that picture. Without heat I can't make it do that ever.
My method was updoing my hair for the dya and braiding for the night - it lost curl pretty quickly (after day 1 it was still wavy but then pretty much 1c, but I look terrible with 1c hair, oh, the irony).

My hair dries very straight when I put it in a segmented ponytail: I put my hair into a low pony at my nape with a hair elastic, then add another hair elastic a few inches down, then another one a few inches down from that, till all my ponytail has hair elastics banded down it. It takes forever to completely dry, but it's the straightest I can get it, and is softer and smoother and less frizzy than whenever I've tried heat.

I like that method too ... hair wrapping makes my scalp hurt but this doesn't. I like to do it with a hard-hold gel so I don't get random hairs coming loose while it dries.

- Actually my natural hair is cork screws and this is how it's left after a lot of bleach and dying and treatments !
This is one of the reasons I like bleach, it makes my hair less curly and more wavy .. but yes, very damaging .
