I go swimming a couple times a week at the gym. I have been wetting it throughly with cold water when I rinse off before entering the pool, then putting a bit of conditioner in it and going in the pool like that. I can't stand anything tight on my head so I really don't want a swim cap, but I need to do something to minimize damage. Does anyone wear their hair loose in the pool or have an idea about what I can do with my hair while I'm swimming?

Well to keep it safe I'd say that you should keep it from getting in contact with the chlorine, if it were me I'd wear it piled on the top of my head and take care to keep my head out of the water.
There's a thread on the subject here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=115)

Hiya
I am a swim teacher and looking to go back into the pool as soon as all the rain over here (Queensland, Australia) stops. I have been dreading getting my hair in the chlorine but then I found this site. Last year I tried keeping my hair out of the water but the tips were dragging in the water 3hrs a day and they ended up yellow and very crunchy. (I have dark brown hair)
I don't know of many people who swim with their hair loose, it creates too much drag and gets wrapped around your armpits!
As for me I am trying the water saturation then add coconut oil to my hair before I get in. I also bought a swim cap made of material, which I am putting over my hair before I put my silicone swim cap on. The silicone caps sticks to my hair otherwise.
An Article I read here also suggested rinsing hair with Soda Water when you get out of the pool to neutralise the chlorine.
