HOW I DO MINE

Put on a hairband (thin scarf, long hair 'tie' - preferably silk or satin or some other very friendly hair fabric). In the neck area, leave the band ON TOP of the length of your hair.

I then divide the length in two and twist it (a braid will work of course - however you find it easiest to work with for the following), then feed it all the way through the band from the top down. (The tail is at the bottom right of the 'loop')

I then lift the tail, and once again feed it through the band from the top down, to the left of the preceeding wrap. Now I just wrap the rest of the hair around the two wraps. I like to put two bobby pins through the 'chignon' itself - not to the scalp - to keep it together. You could also pin to the band, depending on the firmness of it.

I wore this all day, jogged on the spot for ten minutes, and slept on it, and NO TUGGING EVER! It did not tangle either, and it felt weightless. I had tried sticks, clamps, claws, hairpins etc. etc. ad nauseum but nothing could put an end to that tugging, and the buns drooping after taking a couple steps!! My fair is very slippy but this works. I hope it works for others who have the same problem.

TIPS AND TRICKS

Before I start, I like to gently pull hair down and away from my ears, and put one bobby pin on each side, to keep the hair nice while I'm manipulating the do.

You can pin the band on either side at the temple to keep it on nicely.

Heavier hair would need a sturdier band. I bought two mens ties at a thrift shop, and cut them to the right length for me. You can knot it (the knots seem strong), or have it sewn together. I choose for now not to use elasticized bands.

There are probably so many possibilities - other celtic knot type things, chignons... I hope if anyone has successes with other styles to link to a hairband, that they post them here.

I will try to get something in by or before Friday. If camera option (lighting etc.) is being problematic for me, I will draw something out. Please check back in. Really all you are doing is winding your hair length around the band a couple times, then wrapping the rest around that. The band is acting as the anchor, rather than your scalp and hair. Although I learned this on my head, I am also practicing by wrapping one nylon stocking around a large can/tin (as the band) and using another one as the hair length. It doesn't even really matter whether you start with your hair behind or in front of the band or whether you wrap your hair around the band going from top to bottom or bottom to top. I just found that for my head, and this style, it keeps the band closer to my head. At any rate, I will work on getting something in. I was going to anyway but I had had such bad luck trying to get my hair up that when I figured this one out, I wanted to post something quickly. Please check back in.

Just providing some notice - perhaps I should have just done a new thread, but I already have the written instructions in that one. Had a lot of "aaarrrggghhh!" and figured out how to put one picture in a post - thus it took 4 posts. Hope it works! Have fun and experiment!

That's really interesting! Makes me think about the possibility of building a Chinese bun around a scarf instead of a stick, hmm. :eyebrows:

I'm sure many different types of buns could work this way. My idea is not necessarily 'this' bun, but the method, which is using the scarf/band to do most of the support work for those of us who struggle with tugging hair, and drooping buns (or anyone else who would find these comfortable, of course)!! I would LOVE to hear about and see other looks using the band - just got to experiment with coiling, twisting, knotting, turning, wrapping and keep track of how you get there. When I first tried this and it was successful, my first thought (after 'yippee'!) was, hmmm, now how did I do that again?
