View Full Version : Hair type? And question about protein vs moisture

Hi All,

I've always thought of myself as having straight hair - it was stick straight, very fine, and white blonde when I was a child. It started thickening up and darkening to a honey blonde when I was 8 or 9. I got it permed (which didn't take very well, mostly fell out except at the bottom) a couple of times when I was 11 or 12, and spent the next 5 years or so trying to cut the curl off the end. I've had it very short, as well as mid-back length. I eventually realised I had something of a wave to my hair, though this disappeared when my hair was short. It got quite dark during my 20s, though I attributed this to not going out in the sun much.

After finding LHC, I did a few oilings (coconut with castor oil, and coconut on its own), and after the first couple of times, my hair got very soft, lightened to a dark blonde with red/auburn highlights, and got very curly. My son has curly hair when it's long, and I was told he got it from my grandmother, but I'm starting to wonder if he actually got it from me.

I tried a protein shampoo and conditioner yesterday, and my hair was curlier still, with ringlets in the shorter layers around my face, and tight curls at the bottom at the back, and waves all the way up. It felt slightly dryer than normal, but I normally use a hemp oil shampoo or water only, so I think it usually has a light coating of oil on it, which the protein shampoo stripped.

So, does protein make curls tighter, or is the lack of oil allowing my hair to curl up more, or is there something else going on? Also, how do I figure out what hair type I am? When I joined I said 1c/2a, but it seems different now.

Here's a photo - it's not very good, but best I could do:

Thanks in advance
