View Full Version : Putting hair up wet?

My hair is too short now to put up, but when it was long, I would shower in the morning, put it up for work and when I got home it would still be wet.

Is this damaging for hair? SHould I have been drying it before putting it up?

DH said it would start to smell a bit funky if it was left up for too long while wet.

Did this forever and never had a problem with it. It would only smell funky if I was around smokers or something else that smells funky. It seems that wet hair picks up smells really fast. Not a big fan. I loved it. My hair felt great all the time because it was constantly moisturized. I didn't ever oil it or anything. I started doing this again recently. Also, it stays up better that way since my hair is a bit slippery.

Lots of people here put their hair up wet--it's not damaging for most people; instead it seems to be protective and moisturizing. I don't do it, however, because it makes my hair weird, lank, and greasy-looking when I take it down, and it makes my scalp itch. So it's whatever works for you.

Wet hair is weaker but I think that putting it up while wet is WAY better than blowdrying it. If you have time it is best to let it air dry before doing an updo but having it up while wet should not result in any serious damage.

I used to put my hair up wet every morning in the summer when I was in high school; it was so refreshing to let it down midway through a hot afternoon! Nice & cool - and it smelled nice! Like Herbal Essences (^(oo)~)

I put my wet hair in a bun everyday and I have no damage from that. My hair takes longer to dry this way but my hair and ends benefit from the moisture.

Nahhh, you should be fine to leave it up while it's wet. I usually wash my hair at night, sit with it in a bun for most of the night, and then I will let it dry while i sleep- loose, tossed over my pillow. It's usually dry, if not very barely damp when I wake up.

Thanks everyone. Nice to know it might actually be good for my hair.

If I remember rightly, CinnamonHair swears by damp bunning, and one look at her hair - you know she's got her routine down.

Putting your hair up when it's wet is certainly not damaging.
Actually, it is very practical and you don't have to wait until it is airdry or use a damaging blowdryer.

When I wash my hair I always put my hair up or braid it when it is still wet. At the end of the day a part of it is sometomes still wet!
In summerday this protects my hair really well against damaging sun rays and makes it less dry. In wintertime I still do this, but when I have to work early I put all my wet hair/wet updo or wet braid under a hat to protect it from frost. I never use a blowdryer!

Sorry forgot something and can't edit my posts yet.

Also an important reason to put my hair up or in a braid when it's still wet, is because this is the only way it will stay put the whole day. Otherwise my braid or bun will loosen and I would have to do my hair again.

So a bun or braid will be more tight and holds whole day when put in with wet hair

@McFearless, this is off-topic, but I've been wondering~ how did you fix your hair in your avatar picture? It is beautiful! A literal hair-bow, I love it! :)

The downside to putting my hair up wet is that it is usually still wet when I take it down. However, since my hair takes hours and hours to dry, I usually end up doing it anyway at some point in the day. It is also easier to stretch wet hair so I am careful not to twist too tightly when I put it up.

I don't because the hair will still be wet in the middle, even if it's been all day, and it makes my scalp extremely unhappy - itchy and almost feeling like the skin is going to dissolve (though I know it won't).

The only way I can sleep with wet hair is if I put a thick, fresh towel on my pillow, otherwise I get the same scalp issues.

I just have to airdry whether I want to or not! I'm quite propense to colds and sore throats, I can't even take off my scarf at home when in Winter!:wail: Only good thing about it all is that, even if I always hairdry, my hair remains silky...

I put my hair up a lot when it's wet. It doesn't really dry that way, so about halfway through the day I take the bottom half down and do a half bun. Then, usually when I get home it's almost dry.

I haven't really noticed any issues with putting it up wet. It bothers me less than when it's down and wet, actually.

That's what I used to do on workdays when I washed my hair every day, had forgotten all about it until I read this. I did it in sections with just an inch or two more each time let down until it was all dry. These days I only wash once or twice a week and make sure I do it on non-workdays so I can let it airdry. When it gets long again I'll probably have to start drying in sections again, so thanks for posting this. :)

Why is that a down-side? ofcourse you have to be careful not to stretch the hair to much, but are there other cons?

I love it when it is still damp and the hair stays hydrated, even in the hot summers.

Sure! I have way too much hair for it to dry any other way when it's up. I figured that there are probably other people who have that problem too. :)

I usually watch my hair before bed and sleep with it up.

I swear by wet bunning. Not damp, wet. I put my hair in a bun almost immediately after I wash it and leave it up as long as possible (I usually shower at night and sleep in it). It's silky and smooth and feels amazing when I take it down.

I haven't noticed any bad effects from doing this. I guess I'm lucky that my wet hair isn't that fragile.

Good to read the responses, as i thought it would damage the roots and now I see I was wrong.

I can only do it in the summertime, because I have an annoying tendency to catch a cold if my hair is wet for too long

I find it easier to style my hair when its damp :) I've never put it up when it still dripping wet or anything though, but putting it up when its damp is a definite yes for me!

If I bun when wet when I take it down at night my hair feels super soft and full of moisture :)

I agree completly with everyone else one this one :). In the past I have noticed that putting my hair up when wet and right after a shower can actually make my hair super crazy soft to the touch when I take it down at night. I find that putting it up with a chopstick or paintbrush is actually quite protective of the hair. Not to mention the more you pull it back and ignore it, the more it seems to grow when you take it down. The only con I'm not a huge fan of is the funky smell my hair sometimes gets after I let it down. So I spray with lavender before I roll it up now. My opinion? Totally worth it!

Yeah the only down side is the smell, but I find my hair only smells bad if I don't put product in it. If I put my pancea in with some jojoba oil and aloe vera I get a very nice earthy slightly floral sent when I take it down. It's marvelous IMO. <3

I was thinking about this the other day and remembering back to when I used to do it (up when damp- no combing) I think my hair looked glossy and bouncy back then, soft once dry and it was a better condition with locked in moisture thanks to coconut oiling. Im back to my old routine and hope to see improvements, seeing the dry dyed ends growing out is pleasant.

Not sure if I'm the odd one out, I wouldn't tie my hair up when it's wet... prefer to let it air dry on its own.

You're not alone in that. It's just at longer lengths it can be a pain to let it all dry (a lot of hair).

I always end up with a damp bun because it feels like forever if I wait for it to dry completely. Also I'm not a fan of the hair dryer.
Unless it's been a hot muggy day, my hair feels so soft and cool when I leave it at the end of the day. Haven't noticed it being smelly in fact with the new formula for my shampoo (garnier fructis) it smells like day one even on the 5th or 6th day. Is such a strong fragrance harmful?... :hmm:

I like how my hair feels when I put it up damp (never wet, it would never dry) but I don't like the weird kinks and waves I get. Maybe once my hair is longer they will look better?

My hair, which is curly, turns into a cloud of friz if I try to do anything with it dry. Mine has to be wet before I begin.

I try not to put it up in secure styles (pins or nautilus buns) and go for an English braid. When I let it down, it's very soft. I really wish I didn't have to put it up damp, but my hair dries slowly. Grrr.... Dry faster so I don't have to sleep with you loose.

I've had long hair forever and have never had any problems from putting it up wet.
