I'm looking for updos using a silk scarf to both protect the ends and secure the 'do - any suggestions?

How about this?

http://www.22757575.dk/ida/photo/images/Summer2.jpg

Scarved bun instruction:
1) Put hair up in a pony tail. Use lots of leave in or sun screen for the exposed hair
2) Fold a scarf into a triangle and stick one end up under the elastic with the majority of it hanging down. The darker and thicker the cloth, the less UV penetration!
If you use a wet scarf you will get my favourite benefit from this style:
If the scarf and hair is wet, the surface water will keep the hair and scalp cool. There’s a moist “core” and the scarf will keep pulling the moisture out to the surface and evaporate thus cooling the entire bun for hours
Put the short end of the scarf on top of your head to keep it out of the coils
3) Twist the scarf around the tail until the hair is completely covered
4) Twist the hair and scarf like in a regular bun. Twist it as tight as you can to prevent the bun to get room enough to suck up salt water. You want to have only the tap water you used to wet the scarf and your leave in-conditioner in there
5) Coil it tightly around the base and twist like a basic cinnamon bun
6) Tie the two ends together on top of the bun and either leave them dangling or tuck them in

Tada! A style that completely shields the “tail” from sun and wind
Very secure and comfortable too! Plus it can even keep your head cool

That's really nice! I'm so going with this look this summer!

I'm going to join the chorus saying that that looks quite good and that I will have to try it as well. Thanks for the suggestion Igor. Sorry I haven't another suggestion Proo.

I think you can make a chinese bun with a scarf, just wrap it around with your hair and when you run out of hair, wrap only the scarf.

Igor, that's an awesome bun! Thank you so much! I can't wait to try this. I'm always looking for ways to wrap my (short for LHC) hair.

Igor's scarf bun looks awesome! Makes me wish I had longer hair, though... like every single picture on this forum does ;) I'll have to try that bun some day, though. It's both pretty and smart.

Let me join the chorus... I love, love, love Igor's bun. I am going to go digging through drawers in a minute, I am sure I have a scarf somewhere in this house!!!

Just wanted to add that this bun is really good for short(er) hair because it makes it “feel like more”. If your hair is still too short for a self stabilising cinnamon bun, this method can be your first feel at how a real cinnamon bun will be like some time in the future
I had to wait until hip length for the self stabilising effect in a cinnamon bun, but the scarved bun felt solid for me from just shoulder length

Thank you one and all - I seem to recall a scarf involved with a crown braid?

Are you thinking of the "Frida" Do?

Here's mine with a thin strip of fabric (to try it). It works well, but different, with different lengths of hair so APL will be great :)

I LOVE all these do's, but I need my hair accessable to have to accomidate a helmet if need be :( So, I stick with variations of braids and ponytails and put them up into my hats.

Igor, if you ever cross the waters to my neck of the woods, you will have to show me how to make your so neat! I tried that and while I did get it, I have half the length and thickness as you and mine was a mess ;) Yours is soooo neat!!!

Great idea Igor!

Check out the rag bun!

I like big scarf in post #108 and #113 but I can't find those big silky ones this time of year. :(

Brilliant idea there Igor! Check out this fair trade scarf (http://www.giannafairtrade.com/product/fair-trade-scarf-checkerboard) I found from giannafairtrade.com. Made from 100% organic silk, this Checkerboard Scarf is ideal for our long hair.

Igor,

Thank you for this, AND the note that it works nicely for shorter lengths! This is encouraging. I have many light scarves and will definitely try this.

Thanks again!

That's really brilliant! I used to just tie scarf over a bun but this looks much more secure.

What shape scarf works best for this, Igor? Square or oblong?

Thank you for the great idea! It took me a few minutes of trying, but once I figured it out it was very easy to do. And I think this may actually be an updo stable and secure enough to survive an workout session, which would be great. I've been doing a folded braid secured with claw clips, but those dig into the back of my head when doing sit-ups... This might be better. I only need to find an scarf I don't mind getting sweaty...

Where do those of you in the US find your scarves? I've only got one that my great-grandmother gave me when I was a child-- used to have 3 or 4, but alas I lost all but one in the various moves we made in my childhood. :( It's really too bad, the others were really pretty and colorful! (and bigger too!)

I'm thinking of going to the mall today to look, maybe at RareImage? (hippy-esque store, probably a chain) We really don't have that much variety of stores here...

Thanks, Igor! I don't have any silk scarves at the moment, so I used a bandana. The cotton is probably not as protective but here's mine:

Now to see if I have something that will work with the Chinese bun...

I was just searching for something like this! Since I do aerial work (silks, trapeze, lyra, etc) my hair is always a mess from all the changing of positions, and have been known to have sent hair toys zinging across the gym with various movements. After a few hours of training your hair looks like you found a friendly light socket, and yeah...I now am off to find two identical scarves, or make them out of fabric...a short one to cover my head, and a long one to twist my almost/nearly classic hair into! Yeay!
