Attention all braid masters: Could anyone do a tutorial on this gorgeous updo.

http://static.becomegorgeous.com/img/arts/2010/Nov/01/3085/braided_updo_thumb.jpg

It looks simple, but don't know how to do those braids on the sides, or even what kind of braids they are.

Thank you in advance.

They look to me like French pigtails...only instead of centering them on the back right and left sides of the head, they're braided down the outside. I would then guess that they are joined together in a single braid and then bunned. I think if you'd just take larger sections and not pull too tightly you could totally achieve this effect. The hardest thing is getting them to stay on the perimeter of your head. I've been trying with limited success to achieve that myself. :)

Edited to add, upon further reflection I believe that the added hair is taken every other braid turn instead of every turn as is traditional. That would explain why it looks so different. I believe I'll go and experiment and see if this is the case...I shall return shortly and let you know. :)

Looks like a semi-loose lace English braid from the top of the head (starting at forehead), lace braided around to the back, then probably joined with the lace braid on the other side at the center of the back
of the head (probably ponied together). The remainder of the hair is then braided and formed into a bun and pinned.

Somehow it seems like it has more than three strands, though. I keep going back and looking at it, and it doesnt look exactly like an English braid to me.

Torrin, if you do achieve this, I would beg on my knees for you to make a you tube video tutorial!!! I really LOVE this look! And you are SUCH a wonderful teacher!

Yay I was correct. It is, indeed, merely a French pigtail on the outside of the head. The strand are added every other turn instead of every turn, which is why it ends up looking like there are more strands. I apologize in advance for the state of my hair, as it is still damp and has zero volume right now...and I suspect that the gal in the picture has either wavier hair than mine, or had her hair teased and then brushed to give it the soft, beautiful volume that looks so effortless and romantic. LOL. Anywhoodle, I only did one side of my head to see if I was correct in my assumption, but here ya go:

Not difficult at all. :) Hope that helps.

ETA: I do believe I will Sidani...it's just the thing my lovelies like...really easy with complex looking results! In fact, I'll post it tomorrow for a fancy holiday up-do...with thanks to Urban East for finding it in the first place.

I think it may be lace-braided, only adding the hair from the top, instead of the bottom, like usual. I think that's why the piecy-ness from the French braiding isn't visible along the hairline, only along the crown.
Other than that, I think it's a pretty straightforward french braid done on either side of the head then combined and bunned. The tricky part is keeping it down low enough and close enough to the hairline. I always have the tendency to pull the side braids up to high toward the crown. I'm off to try this style for a party tomorrow! Hurry with the tutorial, Torrin :-)

I'm no braid master, but it looks like some of the braid may have been pulled from the other side of the head? If that makes any sense?
Like as if you had a side parting?

ETA probably wrong though, like I said, I am definitely not a braid master :p

You know, I was thinking that, too. I mean, my hair is relatively thick, and while I'm certain I have the technique right, her braid does seem super thick, like it's the hair of her whole head, just all braided to the one side and bunned in the back. I wish we had a full-on face shot (or back shot) so we could see what's going on on the other side of her head. Tricksy photographers. :p

What do you mean by lace? I've seen the term everywhere but don't know what it means.

Great job! Could you post instructions or even a video? :eyebrows: I searched for French pigtails but didn't find much.

Oh I just saw that you said you will. I am so excited!! Could you show whether strands are being added on one side or both? That's unclear in a lot of the side braid video tutorials (not yours, just ones I've seen in general). Thanks again for doing a video.

Yeah, I'm back again. Sometimes I get a little obsessive when something's just not quite right. LOL. So, LissaJane is totally right. I'm 99.9% sure that it's all of the hair on her head in the one side braid. Also? They used some type of wax or hair product to define her sections because mine just smooth right in. Anywhoodle, I'll being doing the tutorial on the combination version tomorrow because just the one side braid? Arm killer from hades! I was having flashbacks to that stupid crown braid, which means that I have at least a foot too much of hair to do it properly (i.e keeping the ends from braiding themselves whilst holding the strands separate and adding hair results in me growling). With BSL hair? No problemo. Sorry it took so long, Photobucket is being snotty so I had to set up a Flickr account. Anywhoodle, here it is from all sides (sorry about the tongue thing in the front shot...it's late here and I'm a bit punchy...also clear eyelashes suhuck) and as you can see it's pretty from the side and back but the left side and the front are no great shakes. Just in the profile I can see that it's a french braid starting at the bangs, that swirls into a bun that you bobby-pin back. You can see a couple things similar to it in my album called "Hair By Roommate." I think either the Braid Swirl or the "heart-shaped" french braid where it's an above shot.

My hair is about BSL, so I'll certainly be giving this one a shot and experimenting around with it :)
Looking forward to a tutorial

OK... to me it looks just slightly different! I tried what I see and it works really well , but I don't have a camera on me. So the french braid is the one that pops to the surface. When doing the french braid ONLY take hair from the forehead side of braid, BUT, take hair from the upper ( hair part side) underneath and braid it in with the hair that you are adding in to the braid from the hairline. This gives the pieced look on the top but not choppy at all. I wish I knew how to do graphics and such. I hope someone can understand!
*Shoot... I see the french goes the opposite way
I am going to try again

I am working at figuring this out. I think... that you take hair every time from the right side, and hair every other time from the left side.

The part I am struggling with is keeping the braid close to my hair line. How do I do that?

What if it's only added from the right side? So the hair from the top of her head goes under the braid and then it's added? I tried to do it on my hair, but my hair is really fuzzy and acting weird on me today.

My best bet (on my hair) would be to modify it with a lace braid with my head tipped away from my the side I'm braiding on. Maybe that'll help you, too?

Alrighty, after sleeping on it, I decided to adjust it to my own preferences and for the sake of making it one of my hairstyles instead of "stealing" from someone else. So I took our ideas, smooshed them together, adjusted the taste level up to tacky (mine) and made this tutorial. Have fun, peeps! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuvMCv-HIao

Thanks so much for the tutorial! I really need to practice my braiding skills because this look is amazing! I really want to be able to pull it off.

First of all, I love this thread and LHC. You guys make making pretty hairstyles SO much easier :)

Second of all, not to sound like a total creeper, but Torrin Paige! You are the reason I got hooked on LHC! I'm subscribed to your Youtube channel and heard you mention it once a long time ago...I almost had a heart attack when I saw you here. I feel like I just spotted a celebrity. Ahhh! Okay, done being a creeper...

@arc691,

Wow! That looks great! It's really easy to see the technique you used. Between you and Torrin, I think I've got a good idea of how to attempt this look. It does look like an arm killer, though. It looks like something to try in the middle of the night when I can't sleep :-)

I'm glad you found your way here. I love so many of the peeps I've met over here, and I always feel like I've left ya in good hands. :)

arc691, it looks lovely! How did you find doing the full-on hairstyle? I found that it was a bit of an arm killer (of course I have an injured shoulder at the moment...lol) and I kept getting frustrated at the ends of my hair not staying separated and behaving. I'm sure the dry heat didn't help (static is evil), but I find braiding all of my hair over to one side is much more of a pain the tail than just simply down the center. I'm just curious as your hair is quite a bit longer than mine...I'm wondering what I have to look forward to when I reach my goal eventually. :) TIA!

Don't worry girls, I have a special place in my heart for "creepers." Besides, I'm like that with Eresh, LadyLongLocks, Loepsie, and Igor so no worries!

Torrin, I am already having trouble with the ends braiding themselves together at waist. I shudder to think what it will be like when/if I reach classic. It used to be so easy to throw my hair up in a french braid, but recently it has become rather vexing  Just another stage to get used to. Secretly, I'm thrilled, because that means my hair is so much longer than before:D
