View Full Version : Rapunzel (Disney's Tangled) Braid for shorter hair - instructions included

Lunnafindel
December 14th, 2010, 12:24 PM
So, as the now Rapunzel-obsessed girl that I am, I spent most of the second viewing of Disney's Tangled working out the crazy braid she has in the city.
Now, I know that it's impossible, both because her hair is impossibly long and because the braid itself defies the laws of physics, but I wanted to try anyway.
Here's the original (the best picture I could find, they didn't have any details of the braid, and the flowers sort of obscure the braid, but trust me, it looks like mine...sort of):
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=6812&pictureid=90532

Here's mine:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=6812&pictureid=90533

And these are the instructions:
Step 1
part hair in an extreme side part (to recreate that almost-bangs swoosh she has), then divide hair into 3 parts, as if you were making a braid. Tie off the two side parts with hair ties, and then braid two accent braids from the bottom of the middle section.
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=6812&pictureid=90531

Step 2
Braid the middle section.
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=6812&pictureid=90530

Step 3
Now, section off the bottom of the side sections so you have a large top section and a small bottom section, and tie off the bottom part of the left side (it doesn't really matter, just choose one) and the top part on the right side.

Step 4
Start a dutch braid with the top section of the left side and continue across the head to the bottom section of the right side.
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=6812&pictureid=90529

Step 5
Repeat with the right side.
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=6812&pictureid=90526

Step 6
Begin braiding the three big braids together, adding the two accent braids in a little later. Finish the braid and tie it off.
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=6812&pictureid=90523

Step 7
Sing and see if it glows!

That is gorgeous! I too spent most of the movie gawking at Rapunzel's hair, especially that braid!

Torrin Paige has another interpretation of the braid on her YouTube channel. It's pretty similar to yours, with the two braids coming down from either side, the English braid in the center, and the tiny accent braids. :)

I'm so glad you guys all like it!
If anyone else gets a chance to do it, post a picture! I'd love to see.

Vorvolaka, the dutch braid doesn't pull any more than usual at the bottom, although I do skip a couple rounds (or bumps or whatever you call them) when I'm crossing over to reach the other side section, so that's probably how I avoid pulling.

I love that we both had a go at it. So awesome. I might have a go at your version. I like the idea of the three braids braided...mine usually turns out so stiff, but I think I may just braid too tightly...always trying to avoid the shred. LOL. Thanks for posting! I love new braided 'dos!

Wishing my hair was longer... Also I think having layers might complicate things a lot with hairdo's like these.

I tried it, but mine came out looking so awful. Is anyone besides me totally braid-impaired? My version was so lopsided and there was scalp cleavage at all three braiding sites and just - ew. :( I'm so sad about it,. because I really think it looks amazing, but I also don't think I can do it on myself. :(

We saw the movie. I don't think you could get any better with real hair than what you did!

Your hair must be extremely thick to do all of those multiple braids and have it turn out great.

Here is my lame attempt at this. Double dutch braids aren't my best style because I have an odd part, which you can just see in the top right. Too much of my scalp shows. I may try this with rope braids and see how it works. I can do a pretty lace rope braid along each side that doesn't show that awkward part. Anyway, here it is:

Oh these are all so cool! I'm so excited! :joy:
I especially like the one done on the Rapunzel Doll - what other doll is going to have the braid from the movie actually done on her? (and her thickness is incredible)
Chibbylick and cm006j and C. Sinensis yours are awesome too! I have one suggestion/correction to my instructions now: Try to braid the lower part of each braid as low down on the head (i.e. as close to the hairline) as possible so they transition more smoothly into the braid later.
This is great! I want to see more!

I tried this, even though my hair is barely APL, and it came out awesome! Granted, because of my lack of length and layers the braid isn't as good as yours, but I'm perfectly content with what I can get! Can't wait to see what it looks like after my hair is longer :)

Lunnafindel, I had a look on Youtube, and I did find some clips of the ending. Unfortunately they are really low quality - all you can really see is that her hair is brown! But you can definately tell she has it in some kind of loop, the bun part is hollow in the middle.

It's midnight and I've just tried this style 3 times. The first time I just went for it and didn't really comb my hair out so it was a little messy but way better than I thought it would be. I forgot to Dutch braid so I tried it again with a dutch braid. Here is the photo (no flash)

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5127/5320062436_5862793690.jpg

The third try was with regular french braids which I think look better in my hair since I can do them more easily. Also this was taken with the flash so my hair looks very shiny - yey!

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5007/5320062204_d0760e1428.jpg I don't like the way you can see the parting on each side though but I do like how the french braid sits better at the bottom.

My hair is about an inch from waist with BSL layers so it made it a little tricky to braid towards the ends. I have to admit that my hair isn't as thick as I thought it was. It might be the layers but...

I really like it and would consider wearing this out if I had a half hour to spare before leaving the house.

Does anyone have a simpler version? i work in a cinema so would like to do something special since i have long blonde hair lol :P

Lunnafindel
January 8th, 2011, 12:52 PM
Torrin Paige's version looks simpler (with only an english braid at the end instead of three braided braids), although I haven't yet tried it, so i don't know if it actually is easier to do.
It's here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeVvAQJ1qBo
I did 3 braids because it makes it wider, simulating the insane amount of hair Rapunzel has, and also is more physically realistic since merely one english braid wouldn't decrease Rapunzel's length enough to be manageable. But Torrin's is technically closer to what it looks like in the movie.

rosek
January 8th, 2011, 04:27 PM
Okay, I saw it again last night :p

For the Queen's hairstyle, I'm having trouble deciding how shes done it. It's either two english braids into some kind of hollow bun, or the bun is created then the ends tucked to make it look like one crossover of a braid. I'll have a try at both styles this week - I have a good idea in my head of how it should look.

You did that... on your OWN head?? Ye godfathers lady - you've got mad skills!! It looks amazing! I end up a total tangled fuzz ball if I tried that - I'm rubbish at braiding, which surprises me a bit since I've been doing it every single day for around 7 years...

I just tried this, without the accent braids. My braid only ties off at between shoulder and APL (my hair's waist length), but it does look amazingly complicated! :) Now I just need to try it post-wash when my hair looks decent. :p

This is a wonderful thing you did. Some day I too will have to try this. However, that will be some day in the future when my hair is longer. Quite a lot longer actually. Also, I will have to actually learn how to braid my own hair. :o

I have this in my hair right now :D A little messy, but it works. My issue is that the middle strain of braiding is always longer at the tassle end. the side strands end up teeny tiny in my tassle but the middle strand has about 5 to 6 extra inches of length hanging out the end.

Venefica, a dutch braid is just an upside down french braid. There are instructions for it here (and many other cool things, I love this blog): http://hairfriendlystyles.wordpress.com/2009/10/29/day-42-dutch-braid/
Johanna, don't worry, that happens to me too. You can't see it in my pictures, but at the end I combine all 3 braids into one thin braid that tapers normally. It ends up looking good, because it tapers so evenly.

Thanks for sharing the pictures Megan E- back to the drawing board now :P

I thought it was a dutch because of the accent braids but it's English. The accent braids seam to be woven from the inside to the out side of a normal English braid *sigh*. :D

MeganE
April 27th, 2011, 11:29 AM
Yep, I noticed there were some differences. But they covered the whole thing with flowers, so it's really hard to tell what they intended to have going on under there. Anyone work at Disney?

I think you were right about it being dutch though, at least the initial braids from the sides. In the picture with her and Flynn together, you can see how they've tucked flowers under the lip of the braid, right? You can't do that with an English braid. And in the last picture I posted, they look dutch there, too, to me.

Also, those initial braids look smaller than equal thirds, they look more like large accent braids. I think I would try starting with smaller braids to cross over, and then splitting those braids into the small accent braids. It looks to me like it starts the way you did it, with the dutch-cross-over, and then it goes into a regular braid, with an accent braid on the top of each strand of the braid.
Based on these pictures, it looks to me like they didn't braid three braids, but I think what you worked out does a much better job of giving the impression of the Rapunzel braid than it would to just braid a regular braid with accent braids. What you did was amazing and should be memorialized on LHC forever. :D

It's all looking english to me(especially that last photo) but I'm done trying for right now- this really makes me wish I had another long hair around. Maybe when my sister comes to visit.... :)

Lunnafindel
April 27th, 2011, 05:58 PM
Wow! Thank you so much for the pictures! I've been looking all over for them and couldn't find anything.
I know that the main braid is an English braid with accents, not three woven together, but what I wanted to create was an idea of what it should have looked like in order to actually change the length and thickness of the hair that dramatically. I also wanted something complex to offset the lack of flowers and magical hair.
If you want something more authentic, TorrinPaige did a video tutorial (http://youtu.be/oeVvAQJ1qBo) which looks more like what's shown in the movie (and is, as always, very pretty).
The thing is, the braid they have in the movie is impossible - there's no way you can shrink 70 feet of hair to floor length just with one braid, and no one's braid could ever be that thick. So I tried to follow the spirit of the braid and Torrin followed the "real" thing. Take your pick, they're both beautiful braids.
I like your version, freecelt, good job, and good luck finding another long hair to practice on!

freecelt

...what I wanted to create was an idea of what it should have looked like in order to actually change the length and thickness of the hair that dramatically. I think you achieved the goal. Your braid definitely captures the spirit of the movie braid.

awwn, I wish I could see the images, but I still have to post a lot more to be able to. :(
looooved rapunzel, though.

anyone else was terribly worried about her hair health during the movie, when she's like twirling around with all that hair sweeping the floor and getting caught in the woods, and specially when someone climbs in it? it was so beautiful, but sometimes I could hardly look at it! lol I must be so freak!

So, a while back someone asked about Rapunzel's mother's hairstyle, and I couldn't figure it out because I didn't have any still shots to work from. I got the DVD now though (*happy dance*) so I think this is what she has: (I did it on a friend who has more similar hair to the Queen)

It's two side braids tied together in the center, then a sock bun done with the ends and pinned down. I'm not very good at sock buns (they don't work on my length hair) so forgive the messiness, but I think I got it.

I noticed the mom the second time around, not the first, other than to see her hair was pretty. I did indeed watch Rapunzel's hair more than her actual character and loved the moments when she got tangled in it, and that it did move realistically for an animated character. I had the songs stuck in my head for days after the theater visit and again after we watched the DVD. Best romantic song ever :D.

70 feet of hair is quite a lot. If you assume Rapunzel is between five and 6 feet tall (I'm 5'2" and she looks on the shorter side of things) then you'd have to divide 70 by 5.
You'd have two downward double-width Us, with a skinnier single length downward. Could those three "sections" be braided together to create the awesomely thick movie braid in a real person? Perhaps the initial dutch side braids are creating support for the tops of the loops, I don't know. I know they didn't imply it being anything other than a regular normal braid by the little girls putting it up for her.

In any case, the recreations are all very pretty and interesting to look at. Kudos to you!

I once was a very abandoned person, lurking about to pick up hairtips, but being unable to see the hidden threads, and reading all the exciting details about them made me so anxious to read them for myself that I joined the LHC.

Once I'd joined the LHC, I fully intended to continue lurking, but this thread, with its "hidden" pictures was so tantalizing (I LOVE Rapunzel's braid in Tangled. I'm also OBSESSED with Tangled, but that's another story) that I decided to start posting so I could see the tutorial.

As SOON as I realized a moderator had finally given me my 25-post privileges, I came dashing back here, and it was COMPLETELY worth every second I've spent. I can't WAIT to try this!! Thanks, Lunnafindel!

Well, I gave this a try today, even though I knew it would look nothing like Lunnafindel's lovely creation--the single English braid she did using only the back section of her hair is about the thickness of a single English braid using ALL of my hair!! lol I'm also not too pleased with wear I braided in the tiny little "rat tail" braids--I waited til I was too far down the big braid before incorporating them.

This is in homage to my BIL though, who I posted about earlier today, and worked on lighting for Disney for this wonderful movie--including the very stunning lantern scene in Lunnafindel's original post. :)

Please excuse the greasiness of my hair--I'm on Day 4! ;)

Now, where was this group thirty years ago when my hair was this long and VERY thick?? Oh, yeah, no internet!

Maybe in my next life?! ;o)

Does anyone have pictures of this braid with flowers in it?

Flowers would definitely look nice! Maybe I'll do this style for my wedding :)

I have more than 25 posts but I still can't see the pictures?
Anyway, I'm sure they look beautiful, I'm just about to watch this movie for the first time tonight :D

You have to have 25 posts, and then be mod approved. The approval can take a few minutes-a few days. Don't worry you will be able to see them soon. My guess is by the end of the weekend at the latest. :)

Wow, that is one amazing braid!
But it needs at least waist length hair doesn't it?

Oh, whoops, I didn't see Amazinggrace's reply about mod approval. Guess I have to wait for that too. Sorry about that.

Yay, I can see the pictures now! I'd love to try this sometime, but I need some free time and more hair.

Starrydawn, did you actually wear that to Disneyworld? if so, I TOTALLY want to see pictures!
Thanks, everyone for the sweet words. I'm sorry about using album pictures, next time I'll try flickr or something. I'm glad I was inspiration for people to post 25 times though, welcome to TLHC!

Ah!!!! LOVE Tangled!! Even beside my affinity for hair... It's just an amazing movie. I can't see the OPs post yet because I'm not at 25, but I love the re-post with flowers!!!!

I was so excited to see this because I'm always looking for princess hairstyles for my hairstylist friend to do on her little girls. When it said shorter hair I was thinking shorter hair as both girls have hair barely to their shoulders so it'll be interesting to see if there mom can interpret this for such short hair. It is gorgeous though, great job!

Sorry Kalamazoo, I posted this ages ago and it looks like the pictures don't work for me either. Let me see if I can find them and add them back - it was a fun style!
