View Full Version : No leftover hair sock bun... I am inept!

I know there has been the link posted in the past about the sock bun where you actually roll the hair up around the sock so that all of it is inside.... I want to do this so bad but for the life of me can never get this started... my ends splay out all over the place and as I try to roll it up, I have hairs sticking out all over the place!

Has anyone mastered doing this? Is there a trick that I am missing?? Or am I really that "up do challenged"??

I'm interested in knowing, too! Sorry I can't offer any help, though :(

Fear not! For the little piggy has a little trick to impart (^(oo)^)v

First, you have to make your own "donut" - I used the sleeves cut off of an old sweater, but a sock will work fine too. The sock must have an elasticized flat cuff/band at the top, like the stripey banded area on this pair:

When you roll up the sock, start rolling from the toe, so that the elasticized band is on the outside of the finished "donut" - my sweater had similar cuffs:

When you put the donut on your ponytail, make sure the open end of the cuff faces towards your head. Pull it down towards the end of the tail. (Here's where the elasticized band comes in!) Take the ends of the tail, pull them up around the outside of the donut, and tuck them under the elastic cuff, so your ends are inside the outermost layer of the donut. I have messed about tremendously with the levels in this image so it's really obvious where my hair ends and the donut begins. See how the hair goes underneath the band? That's why you must use a sock with that extra cuff at the top, because it will hold the hair inside better.

Once you've got the ends securely tucked under the elastic cuff, you'll be able to roll up the sock as shown in the Loepsie video without your ends popping out (^(oo)^)v

I've done it successfully.....after about 10 attempts ;). It helps to keep your ends in one spot held tightly with your thumb when you start it. Don't worry about spreading your hair around the sock until you have enough hair rolled around it to secure the ends.

Just keep tucking and it all works out right in the end.

I was wondering this myself, but I think my problem stems mostly from having some layers that don't allow me to to this cool hairstyle...yet. However, I may try the luxepiggy trick! Thanks for asking this question as I have this problem as well! :flowers:

Ah. Luxepiggy is very clever indeed. That may just be enough to overcome my clumsiness. :D

Thank you! I was forced to innovate due to my own clumsiness, as it happens (^(oo)~)

Thank you! That's actually not a bad idea, since this is the second or third thread of this nature that's come up . . . now, where's the tutorial on how to post a tutorial as an article? :p

ETA: Alas, it appears that I do not yet meet the required length of membership to post articles! d'oh (>(oo)<)

Since I'm not able to post articles, I posted the tutorial and some other sockbun tips in my blog: Sock Bun Tips & Tricks (Fully Rolled / No Leftover Hair / Loepsie Sockbun) (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/blog.php?b=82518)

I think I'm the only one here that likes and prefers the left over. I have about 1 inch left over now. I think is much more of a casual/flirty look. A pretty messy bun. I'd also like to put all left overs on top, curl/twist and pin them for more of a polished look.

I would like the leftover if I had a little bit that I could do something fun with, but if I were to do it the traditional way I'd end up with Sailor Moon hair - little buns with long tails!
