View Full Version : Trimming your own hair ...with a razor?

Has anyone out there done any sort of self-trimming or layering method in your own hair with a razor instead of scissors? I'm curious about what the result might look like. My hair usually lays better and looks less cowlicky when the ends are wispy.

I've never tried this, but I have heard before that it is harder to master cutting hair with razors versus scissors. I would maybe use a mannequin to try it out on first so you can figure out how hard it is to do and if its something you'd want to attempt on your own head. I found this website with instructions on Google : http://hair.lovetoknow.com/How_to_Do_a_Razor_Hair_Cut .. it doesn't sound all that difficult! Good luck and I hope it turns out well!!

I have never had my hair cut with a razor but I have heard that it is damaging and later causes splits, because it cuts only from one side instead of from both.

Scissors cut cleanly. Razors are not hair friendly!

I have and it worked out great except I took off a *bit* more than I wanted to. I bought one of the hairdressing razors though, I didn't use a regular razor. I would say be careful not to get too much hair like I did :) I've also been cutting my own hair for years...so i know what works for me and what doesn't.

I've heard the same. I've also heard damage comes from the razor cutting the hair at an odd diagonal angle instead of cutting the end of the hair bluntly.

Hmm a hair mannequin ... That sounds like a good idea!
I'm not worried about the damage because I'm thinking of doing this when I get to my goal length (not while I'm growing out) ... So any splits would be taken care of when I trim the razored ends off a few months later.

I use razors on my bangs if that helps any. Mostly the side parts that frame my face, it just looks better if it tapers naturally down instead of a weird blunt look where it is supposed to be wispy (since my hair is fairly thick). I don't see any damage or splits there at all, but that might just be because it is newer hair and have seen less damage.

Razoring works great for straight hair. For waves and curls, it is usually a recipe for frizz and disaster!

I've also heard it is really damaging. Every time my hair stylist has used the razor on me I have ended up disappointed. :\

My hair actually likes having razored ends even though it is wavy...it makes my ends softer so they don't stick out persistently in odd directions.
I'm also not worried about damage because I'll be doing this at a length where I'm trimming off 100% of my annual growth. If there is any damage caused by it, the ends will be cut off long before they start to split. I've had razor cuts in the past with a good sharp razor and didn't see splits from it.

I think a razor is more damaging to the ends than a sharp pair of scissors but I have done S&D with a razor when there was nothing else handy. It seemes to work ok but cutting at a diagonal angle gave my ends that awful taipered look.

I heard razors cut damages hair, but I had never tried and also some hairs are stronger than others. Why don't you try in a small section and see if it is prone to damage?

I think most people on this forum actually care about the damage they do to their hair, so you probably wont find a lot of people that use this trimming method  It is possible to trim less damaging with a razor, but not the way you describe

I agree that everyone here cares about keeping their hair healthy - that's why I would trim the razored ends off before they start to split. I only need to razor it once (to get that "awful tapered look" that makes my layers lay properly :) ) and then I can use the twisting method to trim individual hairs with scissors after that.
I actually became interested in using a razor when I read that an LHC member likes it (ultrabella) - on another thread mentioned that she likes to have her layers blended with a sharp razor and that it helps her layers lay properly. I think her hair is beautiful gorgeous and healthy.

But wouldn’t that ruin the razored effect? Isn’t the razored effect because you get a long, angled cut instead of the perpendicular snip you usually do when trimming to expose as little of the cortex as possible? If you cut with the twist and trim-method after, aren’t you back to “normal”?

I think what helps my layers lay properly is when the ends aren't all ending in the sane spot so the ends are more fairytale (not necessarily the straight or diagonal cut on an individual hair...I haven't experimented enough to know if that makes a difference.) When a chunk of my hair ends all in the same spot it looks very "puffy" and bulky and tends to form persistent flips, which isn't the look I want for my layers based of past experiments...It lays better when my ends are wispy.

I trim my bangs with a salon razor because I don't like the look of blunt straight bangs on my face. Razoring my bangs gives them either a wispy or 'shattered' look dependingon how big of chunks I cut each time. I don't notice any damage but it is just bangsand they get recut every three months or so....

I've used eyebrow raszors on my bangs and a few face framing layers. I only did it twice (about 3 months) and it was incredibly damaging. It had a load of little white dots and were there weren't dots there were splits. I find it a better method to quickly open and close your scissors super quick when cutting to get the razor look without the damage :) Happy cutting!
