View Full Version : Creative Hairstyle Pinning In One-Length Hair?

Hi, everyone! :) Does anyone who has one-length hair know how to partially pin up the side hair so that it looks like you have face-framing layers? I have waist-length hair with bangs/fringe, & I don’t want to cut side layers into my hair {again; I had them a long time ago}, but I would like to be able to curl some “shoulder-length layers” around my face while the rest of my hair is up or in a braid.

Also, I have a high & wide forehead, so I need my bangs/fringe, but I might be willing to try to grow them out if anyone could tell me various ways to make hair look like it has bangs, such as how to drape them across your forehead & pin them to the side or if anyone knows how to do a hairstyle I saw on the singer Fergie. Here is a description of that style: it looks like it was pinned towards the back of the head in the half-up, half-down style with some of the pinned part somehow flopping forward over the head & styled to look side-swept bangs. All other pictures I’ve seen of her show her without bangs, & this particular style {to me, anyway} really makes it look like she has them.

I’ll try to post a link in a later message if someone tells me it’s okay to do so. I’m a hair idiot, so I do need directions on how to do these things I described. I enjoy hair accessories, so it doesn’t matter if the pinning is showing or hidden. Thanks in advance for any replies. Have a happy hair-styling day! :)

I usually just use baby claw clips to secure the sides up, keeping them fairly forward so that the hair falls close to my face and looks like face framing layers.

Great page! I think cuddledumplin' has instructions in the Archives for making bangs? Also Igor is doing some great stuff with clip on fringe--check out her blog.

Have you tried no bangs/no layers? You might find that you actually like it that way once you're used to it!

My idea would be to use one of the various methods for creating a faux bob, but only on the front section of the hair.

This one (http://bellasugar.com/706651) could work but you'd need to wear a hat.

This one (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showpost.php?p=43611&postcount=11) could work but because it is rolled you wouldn't see the ends of the hairs if that makes sense. You need to maybe gather the back section on top of the head whilst you rolled the front section of your hair.

This one (http://youtube.com/watch?v=JAYVEZ87y74&feature=related) could look good but you might want to leave out all the teasing and backcombing (oh the horror! :shake:) and the pinning instructions are a little vague.

ETA: I think I read that Fergie's fringe is a clip on thing. I'm not sure if you could maybe try the technique in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2QyEWv4WDo) (at about 7 and a half minutes) but without the side rolls. You'd need to find a sponge roller thingy though.

Hi, everyone! :) Thanks for all the replies & links! All of them are very interesting, & I think they will be helpful for me. They gave me ideas about ways to shorten the length before pinning it, which was what I was trying to figure out. I didn't know if I was supposed to fold the hair against itself or roll it a little like pin curls or cross the side pieces over my head first before anchoring. Don't worry; I won't backcomb! I hope this link works & is okay, remove if it's not; this is the link to which I was referring in my first post:

I do have one-length hair except for wispy bangs/fringe, & I do like the look as well as the ease of working with it, but I'm looking for more hairstyling variety for dress-up occasions. When I was a competitive baton twirler, my shoulder-length hair had to be up so that it was out of the way of the batons, but I had shorter side layers that could be curled next to my face & it looked nice on me. I was trying to get that look again without having to cut any of my length. My bangs do make me look better, but the reason I was thinking to grow them out is very silly; I feel bad that those hairs have to stay short while the rest of them get to be long! :o I might look into clip-in bangs. Thanks again & happy hair-styling!
