View Full Version : How do you think it would look?

I've been thinking about this a good, long while, and as my Mom says "You're going to have to grow up and get boring soon". If I get it it won't be till January due to finances, so I still have time to contemplate. I'm not telling any of my friends, so all my opinions are coming from you... keep in mind this is only temporary - after this I plan on growing out natural (my avatar colour), no more black dye. I'd touch up the turquoise but not the bleach.

Cut: a mix of
this (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4076/4912082539_35b9e91e68_z.jpg) and this (http://images2.fanpop.com/image/photos/14300000/TRON-Legacy-Olivia-Wilde-olivia-wilde-14388780-800-600.jpg)
My hair is wavy and quite thick, but I really do like this asymmetrical sort of bob... I've been contemplating it for a while. I'm not sure which length I prefer, probably closer to Ramona's (the first one)

Colour: the turquoise shown
here (http://www.amphigory.com/se_fishbowl.html)
This is Special Effects Fishbowl - I've had three streaks of it since past May and I know I like the colour, but can't imagine what a whole head of it would look like on me

What I look like now/in the recent past:
back/hairtype (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h318/Kylarra_CatClaws/Hair.jpg)
natural lighting (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h318/Kylarra_CatClaws/IMG00293.jpg)
current (AKA two minutes ago) (http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h318/Kylarra_CatClaws/Snapshot_20101207_1.jpg)

I'm curious about:
How my face shape would look with that cut?
How my skintone would look with that colour?
What sort of bangs would look good? I'm not really happy with my current ones but REALLY uncertain about flat out straight across ones like the pictures.

Any other feedback (even if it's omg don't do it!!) I want to hear your honest opinion. Keep in mind I'm young and in university and have lots of time to grow my hair and don't plan on keeping this up as I know it will fry it. I will continue CO washing, as well.

I adore bright, "unusual" colors. I do think your skintone would look just fine, and I'd get Ramona's haircut just because the other one would be higher maintenance since your hair isn't that straight.

If I were you, I'd get the second one anyway and transition to the other, while experimenting with lots of colors in between.

As for bangs, I'm not a fan of blunt ones, but I rather like side swept, such as these:

Whatever you decide, post pics! I hope you love your results.

ETA: do check ktani's thread:

It definitely saved my hair, and I go from natural blue-black to white without any damage (none has showed up so far). I have currently pink/red and I'm pondering on going back to silver, we're only young once!

There will definitely be pics! My bangs are supposed to be like those above, that's how they're cut in the current pic but they always sort of wave/curl up into this weird roll-thing when they get a millimeter past where they were cut. (I've been trimming them myself)

Haha, figures I know nothing about wavy hair. I'd keep them side swept, myself, and kinda long. They soften my look a lot, and I can always part in the middle if I want a different look.

I am very partial to long natural hair (so don't listen to me) but I LOVE your "two minut ago" hair !!!! so thick ! so pretty and it suits your face very well !!! I'd keep THAT loool :thud:

But hair grows back, so have fun and good luck with your decision :p

Keep in mind this is just my opinion, but since you asked (^(oo)^)v

I think the colour is awesome, and it seems to suit you.

Regarding the cut and/or bangs, I think it would be more flattering if you have the front ending below your chin, with either no bangs or very long sideswept ones. Sort of like this style:

http://s239.photobucket.com/albums/ff33/shoppingpiglet/?action=view&current=20101207.jpg

http://s239.photobucket.com/albums/ff33/shoppingpiglet/?action=view&current=45320101207.jpg

If you go with the length and/or style of bangs in the two cuts you posted, it will make your face look quite round, IPHO. Since you mentioned that your hair is thick, I think having a bit more length in the front will also help keep it from sort of poufing out too much around your face.

Let us know what you decide!

Boring? I'm not sure I understand what she means by that. Conservative looks don't need to be boring. Also my only advice to you is not to cut your hair or dye it! I would just try and grow it very long...that is as un-boring as you can get in my opinion. Good luck!

I love the color, but I think it might look better as streaks/chunks than a whole-head treatment. Your dark brown color works very well with your skin and eyes, a full head of light blue might wash you out. If you get streaks and love it, you can always go back and do your full head!

ETA: Now I reread and see you have the streaks already! Sorry. I dunno about the full head. Looks a little too light a shade to work with your skin, but hard to tell not IRL.

The cut is cute, but I agree with Piggy about the bangs. Your forehead looks a little too short to carry off full blunt bangs well IMO, and wavy hair can be hard to manage in short bangs- they often want to poof and flip.

I loved having a bob about this length, it really showed off my waves and was very easy to care for. Enjoy whatever you decide, and show us pictures!

Cailie - thanks for the compliment! I know long hair suits me, I'm just at the age I want to experiment (I didn't during high school at all)

luxepiggy - I was hoping you'd reply! You have a good eye for fashion and style :). I don't think I want to go as long as your pictures show, it looks more like a 'medium' length and I do want to try 'short', but I definitely see your point about bangs. Glad to hear my uncertainty over blunt bangs isn't unfounded. I may just keep my current choppy, angled bangs, since I can't exactly make them any longer! As long as they're kept trimmed they don't curl up like in my 'current' picture, I'll post a picture of them fanned out tomorrow (too tired to turn the light back on...).

JulietCapulet - She mostly just means that as a Law student/Treaty negotiator, I can't really experiment with wild colours or anything, so I should probably do it now :) she doesn't mean it maliciously. I've tried growing long, I've had BSL my whole life and honestly? I'm kinda tired of it. No matter how well I look after it it's not been growing. I don't heat style, I've been CO'ing for a good few months, etc. I will still try and grow long, just after some fun.

Roseate - First of all, nice to hear from a wavy that bobs are good! I know Ramona's is awesome, but well, that's a movie and it's a lot different from living with it. I have streaks of it, and I know I love the colour.. but it's not enough! My theory is that if I don't like it I can add black back in - since my hair is currently dyed black, though it's faded somewhat. Additionally, these types of dyes can actually get quite deep, depending on how long you leave them on. My streaks have been almost teal at times.

Thanks for your opinions everyone, keep 'em coming and I'll see this thread in the morning :D

Omg! That Ramona's hair is almost exactly what I had a few years ago when I had short! I went to the hairdresser with this picture:
http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ybQz9sexunqGiM:http://www.action-hq.com/store/images/images_extra/vice_mokoto1.JPG&t=1

I really liked it the first few months, but it was high maintenance, I had to style it a lot.

The turquoise colour looks really cool, would you have to bleach it first to get the colour?

If you're up for a big change, and are ready to style your hair more often, then I would say go for it :)

Yep, I'd have to bleach the h*** out of my hair. However... I've had three bleached streaks in my hair for a while, and they honestly feel no different than the rest of my hair - coarse, sometimes dry ends, but still healthy.

ah I love both of those cuts! They are my most favourite, I've concidered them on myself aswell!

I dont know enough about face shape or skintone to offer advice, but I love the idea of doing something like this if you really want it :) Hair is a great way to show of your personality and those cuts are edgy and punky and adorable! They can really transform someone, so it depends on what you're going for. I mean, take those 2 actors, I always found them sort of blah and not that interesting when they had just normal APL brown hair....but then give them that cut and wow, caught my attention!

I like your hair the way it is, actually. I'd go for a few streaks here and there maybe, and a few shorter layers in front. Nothing too drastic all at once.

Do consider the fact that the change you're about to make is going to be just that: drastic, and that the shock and realization might come right after you've had this done and it's going to take considerable effort to undo if you don't like it.

I'm saying this because every time I've ended up with drastic changes to my appearance, I've regretted it.

Since you want to experiment with cuts and colors, I say go for it. It takes years and years and years to get long hair, so best get the desire to experiment and play out of your system before settling into it. I never acquired the patience for it until I was in my mid-40s, so you have plenty of time to devote to hair-growing should you decide that's what you want.

I think your crazy!! In the nicely possible way....!!! :cheese:

You've got gorgeous hair. Why do you want to cut it? And just because someone else said you'll look boring doesn't count. Do you not want long hair anymore?

Perhaps I'm partial because I prefer long hair, but I'm afraid for you! I chopped all my hair off in an angled bob two years ago and totally regretted it. I had it super bleached, too. You can see it in my hair journey album. It was bad. It required SO MUCH WORK to look presentable, and I just didn't like to have to do it! So I never did, so I looked silly 90% of the time.

I'm glad you've got until January to think about - I'm hoping you change your mind! Your hair is amazing.

But, I know what it's like to have your sights fixed on something; sometimes you just gotta do it and see what it's like. :)

ETA: Here's a fun Etsy shoppe for you to check out. http://www.etsy.com/shop/wighall?ref=pr_profile
Perhaps you could try a wig? They have some fun colors. I am saving up for a few of them... :D

Well, you certainly have the right hairtype for Ramona's cut (I envy you :)). To achieve the bob in the second pic, you'd have to straighten it constantly. When I choose a style, I don't bother much with face shape; if I really like that style, I'll get it (and over the years I've tried many different styles.)

Now the color's up to you. If you're willing to put forth the effort to keep your hair in decent shape while you're coloring it, and you really want to do it, then I'd say go for it while you can. Once you're in your professional life you won't be able to.

I love that turquoise! I kid you not, once I'm an old, old lady that's the blue rinse I'll use! (There's a joke here in Texas about which drivers get the right of way. Blue-haired old ladies driving Cadillacs always get the right of way.)

Your young and as you said you ( probably) wont want to do it when your a lawyer/negotiator , so why not have fun with it now ! I Love Ramona's cut and the color idea. You already know how to take care of your hair when ( and if) you decide to grow it long again , so it seems well thought out so IMO ...go for it.

I think if you want blunt bangs I would make sure they are not too heavy , so it doesn't make your face look to full. The ones in the picture would look good but if you get too much bang or too perfect of a bang , you may not like the look.

Nice to see so many positive things about this, since this is a long hair oriented community, after all :D I wanted to note this is not meant to be a permanent style... I'm just going to cut, bleach it, and then keep redoing the colour on the already bleached parts, but let my hair grow out natural.

lapushka - I've tried minor things. Bangs, streaks, layers, thinning. Some of it I liked, some of it I didn't, but I've just got this itch to see what it'd be like, since it's something I've never had. If I hate it, then, well, I do and I scratched the itch XD

TinaDenali - I've worn a wig for cosplay, and honestly, wouldn't want to do it for everyday. Plus, I love my hair's texture and thickness, and you just don't get that with a wig. I personally think your angled bob looks cute, though your long hair is gorgeous too :)

I really am leaning towards it. I'm not someone to cut on impulse, but it's a good thing I have a month or so to think things over. I do want long hair in the future, but I'm kind of interested in experimenting *now*.

Good point. You sound determined. :D Others, and you, are right about now being the time to do it rather than later and this way at least you avoid regrets of the kind, had I only done this or that fun thing to my hair when I was younger. Now's the time to experiment! Gosh, I sure did fun stuff to my hair when I was still in school! Pity though, because your hair was getting quite long and you kind of are beyond the awkward stages. :o

I love the idea. Don't be afraid, have fun. When you're done with school you may not be able to have wild hair styles anymore.

I think that the aqua would look great with your skin. I also like the cut. But having wavy hair myself, I'd be afraid of the daily styling demands to make my hair behave, especially the bangs. So think about how your hair has behaved in the past with short cuts and how much styling you want to do daily.

Sounds like you're considering it carefully, that's a good thing! Another thing to keep in mind: if you don't have a stylist that you trust already, spend some time researching a good one. The skill of the stylist makes a huge difference with short haircuts!

I think you look very pretty with your natural color and current length. :flower:

However, I also understand the need to do something drastic now and then. :D

The cut in the 1st pic seems like it would be more flattering for your face shape and hair type- wavy. The turquoise color is gorgeous!

I'm 2nd-ing tinadenali's reccomendation of trying out a wig. Not necessarily to wear it permanently, but just so you can get a feel for how you would look with that length and/or color.

Good luck on whatever you decide. :)

Yeah, Aleria, that's what I meant when I linked the Etsy wig shoppe... just to check out the cut and they've got some very similar colors, too. Not to wear it daily because that's just a hassle.

I am certainly not the fashion person to ask for advice, but the idea of the Tron-style in colour on you I love! However, a short and sharp haircut may need to be trimmed often to not loose its sting.

Well...I'm not sure about the straight across bangs with your face shape. Yours is similar to mine (great cheekbones, but a little fuller), so I think I would go with angled/sideswept bangs to add length to your face and detract from the fullness. Also, the sideswept look would be really great for bringing out your great eyes

About the bob...are the ones you're considering angled bobs? I couldn't quite tell from the pics, but I think a bob that is somewhat shorter in back and longer in front would frame your face nicely and highlight the best features of your face.

I'm not a big fan of the funky colors simply because I always wonder about job interviews, internships, etc., where you might be expected to project a professional image, but if that's not an issue for you now, I say go for whatever you want. You're young! Now's the time to play with your hair and have fun! It will grow back, after all :-)

Can't wait to see pics after the big chop!!

My advice would be don't have sides end at your chin. My face is quite thin, but with a wavy hair chin length cut I look like I have gained 40 lbs overnight and it looks like your hair is much thicker. My wavy hair is very tri-anglish at that stage as well. But likely our waves are different, and maybe you are not so lazy at styling as I am.

No problem! I really want the green bob one. It would make a really awesome Nightelf costume! And the really long purple one with the side buns is cool. And the silver one! So awesome looking! I want them all, basically. Gah!! :D

When I turned 21 I went to my most favorite hairdresser of 4 years and told her I wanted a spiky pixie cut, like Sharon Stone at the time. She took my shoulder length hair, gathered a large handful at the crown and said, "I am going to take the first cut right here so you can't back out."

I replied, "Well, I can drink tomorrow, legally, so if it looks bad I can make it so I won't care!"

To this day, I still remember the thrill of walking out of the salon with the air on my newly exposed neck and shorn hair. I loved it and it was liberating.

I am not a fan of blue hair, but if YOU want to do something like that, then embrace the experience regardless of what anybody tells you....:flowers:

That being said, I could never bring myself to dye my hair BLUE!! Good Luck!!
