I have stick-straight, fine hair. At least once, in my life, I want to have beautiful waves like my LOTR hair idol. Is there any way I can achieve it without heat?

I tried braid waves but the ends just remain straight and ugly. Bun waves I cannot get to emulate the undulating effect. Help please!

There are some pics of my hair curled in my album, they were done using Conair spiral curlers, no heat. I really liked them :)

Try Torrin's method (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0NMLSUICp4)? It's basically braidwaves with curled ends - no heat! :)

I read in a different thread about braiding with long scarves so that the tassel is all scarf and your own hair ends before the "tassel" begins. My hair isn't long enough to try it yet but it sounded like a good way to get braid waves to continue all the way to the ends!

I second the braid waves using thin strips of fabric or scarves to keep the ends of your hair in the braid so they get "waved" as well.

Use rags! This is what mine look like

Not the best picture, hair was still wet but you get the idea

Here's the link to the directions

@Ultrabella how hard are the Conair spiral curlers to use? I think I'm slightly challenged when it comes to doing complicated things on my hair.

Slightly damp hair and sleep with curlers or use paper bags like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoZ2QGq0n4A) on YouTube. HTH

Damp hair in a braided cinnamon bun. Twist at the ends before securing it.

The best method is to do a huge sock bun on the very top of your head. Not a regular sock bun, but the kind where you put your hair in a very high pony tail, then take the sock and starting at the end of your ponytail rollupwards like your turning your sock inside out.
Sleep on it all night (it is very comfortable because there are no pins etc. holding it up) then when you wake up, beautiful curls that last all day!

I don't know if you can figure out what I'm talking about or not. There are a few youtube videos on how to do it, I just wish I could remember what it's called!

I've had the best luck with Torrinpaige's tutorial for rag curls. Mine stayed put for about two days, and they were fairly Eowyn-esque. Make sure to do it while your hair's a bit damp, and to use end papers. They were actually pretty easy once you got the hang of it.

I swear by Rag Curls! I get the best results off them.

Agreeing with all who said: braid waves. Just spray your hair lightly with water, then braid and sleep with the braids. For smaller waves braid tightly, for looser waves braid loosely.

Braid all the way to the ends of your damp hair, wrap a wet ribbon around the ends, and secure with a small rubber-band or ouchless poly-band. The ribbon will protect the band from cutting into your ends. That way, your waves will go all the way down instead of stopping abruptly and having straight ends.

These might make your hair a little curlier than you would like, but I have heard good things about them.

Thirding Torrin's method! Made mine very bouncy and pretty on the ends instead of stick straight.

I thought they were quite simple really. I had no problem with them and my 14yr old daugter can do them too. They stayed in well even while I was doing housework !

I went as Eowyn to a fancy dress party. Now I do have wavy hair, but I washed my hair the night before and let it air dry for a little while. Then I separated my hair into three sections and just did an english braid with each (so 3 braids all together). I slept with them in and by the party the next day they were dry. I just took them out and wore them.

Here is what I do and I got really nice waves. I washed my hair at night. Apply some styling gel to it. Allow it to dry a little bit. Then do a fairly tight dutch braid from the top of your head, as high as you can get it. Braid to the end. Then I leave that in at night and all the next day and night. This is to allow it time to completely dry. My hair takes forever to dry while in a braid like this.

Then Just un-braid it and you have some really nice curls. I find they don't hold as well if I don't use some kind of gel on it.

Hope that helps. I will try to get a picture of it in a week or so.

She sure has pretty hair in the link that you gave above. Who is it? do you know what movie it is from?

I think that she got those waves from braids, maybe a French braid.

Yup, it's Eowyn from The Two Towers. I absolutely love her character. She rides around slaying fell beasts and Nazgul, instead of mooning around giving Aragorn random wet dreams like Arwen.

I think doing braid waves with damp hair and mousse overnight (or overnight+next day, over the day in a Chinese braided bun) would be your best bet. I tried Torrin's soft set and still haven't gotten the hang of that one, heh.

This would be a neat one to try, too: http://rapunzelsresource.wordpress.com/2010/08/06/bandana-curls-or-rag-curls-for-long-hair/#more-2004
